In all my 49 years singing barbershop, there never was a thrill like singing for the fabulous Jim Miller. He understood more about making music than any professor you can name, and taught this chorus and me how to make an indelible impression on the audience. I am the most fortunate man in the world to have sung under his direction. Jimmy left us (10/2011) and his memorial service is tomorrow. How I wish I could join the hundreds of barbershoppers to sing a final time for this giant of a man.
I remember being at their rehearsal the day before this performance. When they started stepping forward a few at a time on "You can't buy the sunshine at twilight," the goosebumps started and didn't stop until the end of the set. Fabulous! One of my favorite barbershop memories!
I was lucky enough for a friend of mine to take me to their rehearsal hall in Cincinnati when they were rehearsing this and I sat front and center and when they sang "If you had all the world and it's go-old" I thought I'd vibrated into another universe. It was literally earth moving.
WHY are they literally YELLING a heartfelt song? Thank GOD that BHS is looking for organic, heartfelt performances.I joined in '89. I loved barbershop, but the performance always seemed awkward.
