Heard it's going to be an Ode to Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf. Seriously, though that'd be amazing, a Sabaton song about the Carpathian offensive, or the Italian front.
Ok, I've had a really bad Sabaton/WWI joke on my mind for a very long time and I think, that this is the place to get rid of it: "Where is the lost batallion? - They Argonne!" Yes, it's that bad.
Here is the speech that Major Dragutin Gavrilović gave to his battalion on 6th October 1915: " Soldiers, exactly at three o'clock, the enemy is to be crushed by your fierce charge, destroyed by your grenades and bayonets. The honor of Belgrade, our capital, must not be stained. Soldiers! Heroes! The supreme command has erased our regiment from its records. Our regiment has been sacrificed for the honor of Belgrade and the Fatherland. Therefore, you no longer need to worry about your lives: they no longer exist. So, forward to glory! For the King and the Fatherland! Long live the King, Long live Belgrade!" Thank you Sabaton, thank you TGW.
(Hands him my rifle...) "F U! You go die, and I'll watch from the hill?...I think it's high time YOU go off to die in a muddy ditch, while I stay home, and protect the women/children...?"
Sabaton generally releases an album every 2 years They released an album last year If they released a ww1 themed concept song on armistice day that would be the coolest thing ever imo
I didn't know who Sabaton was when I started watching this video, and 20 minutes later I was subbed to their channel. Awesome video, really fascinating to see how the First World War is still driving the creativity of artists a hundred years later.
Hopefully Sabaton does more WWI themed song now that the centennial is still going. But I want more about other history too like an ancieng Rome. Sabaton is my favorite band.
I would like to see an album, or a couple of songs about Napoleon (like Waterloo, or his conquest of Russia) or something from that era. Also I wouldn't mind hearing some songs about naval fights like Trafalgar, or about some famous capitans or pirates (Blackbeard, or Jack Rackham for example)
For real though, I really do wish they should do a song about Napoleon, he just seems like concept Sabaton would do. Some more topics they could do was Qin Shi Huang and the Harlem Hellfighters.
Definitely love Sabaton for the energetic, heavy, history-telling metal as I enjoy history. You collaborating with them or you just hanging out with them is just so fitting and epic. And so nice of Par to be very happy to be with you. Two of my favorite history-telling entities coming together really made my day and are just destined, meant to be. Instant favorite! If Sabaton makes a concept album about WW1 (to which I guess they'd call it The Great War or The War to End All Wars) with you helping them, that's bound to be epic!
Holy shit, I took a picture with him when they came to Chicago for the second time years ago. I knew who he was back then, but fuck never thought he'd end up on this channel. So glad you kept on after the change over of the band Par!
Thanks Indi and team, just listened to the song. I cried when I first read the words of forgiveness of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, as an Australian, I was humbled by the generosity of a people whom we had attacked. I did not know of this speech/memorial before I went to Gallipoli and to this day I do not know of a message of condolence that would better offer solace to a parent who lost their solider child. (I posted the same message on the Sabaton site)
well this is awkward...I found Sabaton by chance two weeks ago, started (re)watching this channel from the beginning one week ago and now this video is uploaded...
Indie and Flo, I found your channel in November of 2014 because of Päl Sundström and Sabaton and subscribed because of them and havn't been disappointed yet. Great interview!!!
My two favorite things! Met the Sabaton guys after a show in New York City. Best concert of my life and one of my favorite RUclips channels all in one. Pär is such a cool dude, glad to see these guys getting a little more exposure.
Damn this is just SO GREAT! ... I totally love The great war channel and yet Sabaton is the favorite band of our whole family (6 members in total) . This is just so awesome! ...As a person who knows a lot about warfare and history I also respect and like the human perspective which comes so often from the TGW & Sabaton crew. As humans we like to glorify things and are often interested about these warlike matters, but it is also as important to not to forget the horrors and amounts of suffering during a war.
I am way behind having just subscribed to this channel, but I love Sabaton History and their music. I finally decided to check out Indy's other channels. This was an awesome video to watch. To see how they were kind of put together and ended up creating the Sabaton History channel, all very cool.
saw Sabaton at Fredriksten festning this summer playing the entirety of "Carolus Rex" most badass history lesson yet :D for the unaware, it was at that place the end events of the album happened
Lol I was going to ask about sabaton in OOTT. Mainly to do with the lost battalion and the battle and circumstances around this event. Then I saw this video. Best youtube channel and best metal band. Awesome work.
Paer is so shy and talks so softly you'd never guess his onstage presence. it's like he sinks all his energy in songmaking and live gigs, and has none left for his day-to-day life.
This actually pretty cool and I'm not even into metal, love these cross-overs. It for sure helps spreading the WWI story towards potential new audiences.
I do not know about mobilization percentages, but I do recall reading some 40 years ago that Serbia had the largest casualty percentage of all the combatants. They're literally only surrendered when there were no more young men. The French population actually declined post WW1,due to the terrible casualties, and England and Germany had a period when it was unlikely for a young woman to marry. This war shaped our world to a degree that few people understand.
I am from Serbia and we were taught that about 1.5 million out of 5 million inhabitants died(combatants and civilians), making an inrecoverable hit in demographics to this day, especially adding the death toll after ww2. Indy said that 1 out of every 4 Ottoman combatants(or inhabitants!, can't remember) died in ww1, but that might have something to do with the Armenian genocide.
0.5 Warp Well you are quite correct that it was a terrible killer, eventually affecting almost every community in the world, but it is my recollection that Serbia surrendered before the Spanish flu got started. There are conflicting origin stories to the disease, but probably started in western France in a very large military community. Pigs were fed leftover food there. And the outbreak got out of hand quite late in the war. Related to swine flu,I believe. How Serbia continued as long as it did mystified me,given the behaviour of such as French and Russian troops. A small recent country, without a native arms industry facing an ancient conglomerate power. Talk about stubborn.
It means you're brave enough to fight, yes. And since you still exist it also means you've got the brains to accept peace terms when a much more powerful enemy thinks it's getting too expensive to fight you but they can't give up due to pride. The resolve to stand, the wisdom to stand down.
Was sleeping when I hear the beap sound on the cell phone,I check it instantly...WOW what I can say...nothing but ty you, greetings from greece to germany serbia the channel,+ I was already sub of sabaton and ur channel, hope all good
Indy you are a historian, an actor, you host the best history channel on RUclips, you did a collaboration with AlternatHistoryHub, you own the Sandman comics, have traveled and lived in many places and you interviewed a member of an awesome metal band I think it should be illegal to be this cool
Merliginary Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army on the march. Long way from home, paying the price, in young mens' lives. Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army in despair. Knee deep in mud, paying the price in young mens lives.
Andre Luiz And as the night falls the general calls And the battle carries on and on How long? What was the purpose of it all What's the price of a mile?
Thanks for the great episode!) I'm really glad that metalheads popularize history themes through their music! If You like WWI themes in Metal, check Cryptic Wintermoon's "Fear", Ukranian band called 1914, and God Dethoned WWI Trilogy ("Passiondale", "Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross", and "The World Ablaze")
This is one of the things I didn't knew I wanted, but know that I have it, I can't see how I lifed my life without it for so long. Also I literally just finished listening my Sabaton-Playlist again with Hearts of Iron, so I am in the right mood.
The strangest, least expected but most amazing crossover ever
Agreed. Just blew my mind.
Not anymore
It wasn't unexpected, Joakim, Pär and Indy Neidell having been hosting Sabaton History for ages now.
Endgame eat your heart out
A surprise to be sure, but a welcomed one.
Is this how it all began?
the start of Sabaton History?
This is truly a great day.
Sabaton is more Metal, while The Great War has more Flo.

Maybe a new Sabaton theme for the channel? ;) P.S.: Thanks for the "Coat of Arms"!
And The album last stand that was one hell of an album
V. Athanasiou Για την δόξα της Ελλάδος!
Maybe The Lost Battalion or Last Dying Breath.
Price for a mile is most appropriate
I actually really liked cliffs of Gallipoli and final solution
Sampling war sounds for percussion, now that's badass
basil B in The Lost Battalion right?
basil B The sampling was really low quality for that song.
Hearing it live with Hannes van Dahl on the drums with the sampling as well is a fantastic duo.
basil B drum triggers are magic

Fridrick The IV Nobody ever expects the Spanish Inquisition!
Indeed.
What a chill guy. Grats on this interview!
Hopefully Sabaton does more WWI themed song now that the centennial is still going. But I want more about other history too like an ancieng Rome. Sabaton is my favorite band.
I just want Sabaton to make a song about the Great Emu War lol
I would like to see an album, or a couple of songs about Napoleon (like Waterloo, or his conquest of Russia) or something from that era. Also I wouldn't mind hearing some songs about naval fights like Trafalgar, or about some famous capitans or pirates (Blackbeard, or Jack Rackham for example)
Imagine a song about the Emperor Caligula!
They must do punic wars alexander and napoleon
For real though, I really do wish they should do a song about Napoleon, he just seems like concept Sabaton would do. Some more topics they could do was Qin Shi Huang and the Harlem Hellfighters.

Holy shit, I took a picture with him when they came to Chicago for the second time years ago. I knew who he was back then, but fuck never thought he'd end up on this channel. So glad you kept on after the change over of the band Par!
Truly the birth of a beautiful friendship

Will there be an interview with Ian from Forgotten Weapons? that will be so sick.
F yes! DO EET
Oh yes, please do it!
Can we petition RUclips to add a "love" button so we can love this video properly? Like is just not enough.
I became a Sabaton fan because of this video. And thanks to Sabaton I discovered a few new topics.

New Sabaton fan here thank you Indy, Flo and every member of the Great War team :D
Mr. Sundström is so mellow toned and non metal, that it's metal.
Bass players and drummers tend to be be quiet introvert types :P
I swear right now I'm like a kid on Christmas right now
Indie and Flo, I found your channel in November of 2014 because of Päl Sundström and Sabaton and subscribed because of them and havn't been disappointed yet. Great interview!!!
My two favorite things! Met the Sabaton guys after a show in New York City. Best concert of my life and one of my favorite RUclips channels all in one. Pär is such a cool dude, glad to see these guys getting a little more exposure.
Holy crap, one of my favorite bands and favorite channel together! This is just amazing, love sabaton and love The Great War!
Also, Sabaton made me discover this channel...so watching this was just a matter of time.

As he mentioned barley anyone is alive that fought in the Great War, actually the last Great War soldier died in 2012 sadly
I Was a fan of Sabaton before this now I have more songs to look up, thanks , Keep up the great work both of you.
I am way behind having just subscribed to this channel, but I love Sabaton History and their music. I finally decided to check out Indy's other channels. This was an awesome video to watch. To see how they were kind of put together and ended up creating the Sabaton History channel, all very cool.

This is the best video in RUclips. Two of the coolest things doing a collab
I'm not normally into heavy metal music but their music really adds to an emotional story. Thanks for a different way to tell the story of war.
Best episode, best RUclips with one of the best metal bands love it keep it up.
Just checked out Sabaton's music for the first time. These guys are great. Thanks Indie~
Sabaton and The Great War? My day has been made! :D

SABATON SABATON SABATON !!!!!
I saw Sabaton open for Nightwish and they were amazing! I became an instant fan of theirs after that night.
whenever i listened cliffs of gallipoli i remember the episodes about that war on the channel. indeed 'such waste of life'.
Great band, great channel, Great War (info).
*whats the price of a mile my friends???*
Merliginary Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army on the march. Long way from home, paying the price, in young mens' lives. Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army in despair. Knee deep in mud, paying the price in young mens lives.
Half a million men
Dakota Durham I fucking love you
Merliginary Thousands of machine guns kept on firing through the night.
Jay Tea But 6 miles of ground has been one, half a million men are gone. So it's actually "only" about 80,000 people per mile.
OMG I love Sabaton!
They can be pretty cheesy but they make some really fun music.
I was in that crowd in Belgrade and its fucking true everyone was shouting the speech before the song. Best feeling.
This was amazing. I didn't know I wanted this until I saw it.
Hear the sound of a machinegun, hear it echo in the night
Mortars firing wrecks the scene scars the fields that once were green.
Alexander Lee There's a stalemate at the frontlines, where the soldiers rest in mud
Roads and houses, all is gone
There's no glory to be won
Know that many men will suffer
know that many men will die
Half a million lives at stake
At the fields of Paschendale
Andre Luiz And as the night falls the general calls
And the battle carries on and on
How long?
What was the purpose of it all
What's the price of a mile?
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It’s an army on the march
Long way from home
Paying the price in young men’s lives
I found it really cool to hear how these guys come up with some of their ideas for songs.
omg i love sabaton and this channel !
Thousands of Feet March to the Beat it's an Army on the March, Long way from Home paying the price in young man's lives
