    DeMeco Ryans did a terrible job cleaning up this situation. Have QBs exploited the slide rule? Absolutely. Was Trevor exploiting the rule on this play? Absolutely not. Trevor was practically on his back when Azeez came in. Ryans made the insensitive, tone-deaf claim that the Jaguars bench overreacted, which makes me wonder if Ryans even saw the extent of Trevor's fencing response on the hit in which he was concussed. Absolutely terrible. You can stand behind your player, defend his integrity, and still acknowledge that what Azeez did was uncalled for.

On a side note I do think a rule change needs to be made where a QB needs to give themselves up earlier - both before the slide and stepping out of bounds.

    I understand there’s complexity and nuance about slides and Patrick Mahomes fake sliding where on the surface you wouldn’t necessarily think is all that hard to understand. That was not this hit, and you can tell because of the forearm making sure to drive through Trevor’s head so that it hits the ground. That’s not hard to understand, that’s not respect for your fellow player, and that’s clearly illegal hit to the head and intentional. You wrap if you’re not trying to hurt a guy, and that late forearm tells anyone who sees this all they need to know.

      @@SaintTaris When you give yourself up, you are protected. Period. Regardless of position. Learn the rules. Lawrence was deep into his slide when that hit was delivered. Guys who slide late get hit at a very different point in their trajectory. This is basic football knowledge. Almost everyone who saw that hit knew it was particularly bad. The Jags are a 2-win team, and they still rallied up like the playoffs were on the line. You see your QB take that shot, that’s the standard response. Pretending the Texans wouldn’t have done the exact same thing is hypocritical.
      It was a dirty hit. That doesn’t make Azeez a bad person. But when you hit a sliding player on the ground with a forearm shiver to the face, it’s egregious. The fact that he’s a QB is a massive part of the reason there’s no excuse. QBs do that all the time. Defenders have a difficult job, and it’s hard to know what a running QB will do. But it’s basic math that you treat a run by that player differently, simply because you don’t want to hurt your team. Again, everyone knows this, including and especially a veteran inside linebacker. He just lost track. That’s doesn’t mean the hit wasn’t dirty.

      That my friend is what the sport of football has largely been about since its inception. It’s why people loved to watch. This new version is a watered down game that gets weaker by the day. I totally get it bc of the discovery of CTE and how concussions are directly related to it. But sometimes it’s hard to have your cake and eat it too. Violence is a part of football. No different than combat sports. But with all the new research and developments on player’s health, the game has to change and that kills what it was designed to be.

    I really hate that Mike didn’t engage Devin in the deeper conversation. Yea what happened to Trevor is messed up. But what Devin said is real talk. The general picture is the big thing. And like he said last week Trevor might have kept running. This week he wants to slide. You never know. I personally grew up on the defensive side of the ball. So I side with the defenders here.

      @@QuDotG34 But Devin made it 100% clear that this situation didn’t fit into that category. Ryans did not. I like DeMeco. He’s defending his guy. But he didn’t manage that the right way. Devin interpreted Ryans’ words generously. Go back and listen - he never says or implies that this is about the larger situation. He then blames the Jags players for responding the way they did - a response that included multiple defensive players - which we know is wrong. He would have lauded his players for responding that way if someone hit CJ like that.

    You know that thing in baseball where a pitcher hits a star player with a 95mph fastball? What happens next? The other team's star player gets pegged with a heater. This is the message that needs to be sent in the NFL. You hit my teammate in a dirty way like this, we're gonna take it out on your guy. Stroud shoulda felt pure fear walking back onto that field and he shoulda been mad at his teammate for it. Once that unwritten rule is agreed upon by everyone, plays like this will stop happening.
    At the end of the day, the slide needs to be reworked. QBs used to slide head first and they'd end up with back injuries cuz defenders would hit them late so that's where the slide came into play. Defenders have learned to not go at anyone that's given themselves up that way. I can see that they get it. And the back injury numbers should reflect that. I don't have the answer but the slide has led to dozens of severe concussions and faking that motion can be manipulated into handcuffing defenders, which is bad for the game. This needs to be addressed big time this off season.

    • @crystalballers
      @crystalballers 8 дней назад +1

      It's not though. Sliding initiates the dead play for protection of the qb. Diving is the opposite. You do that and it's legit for the defender to drive your head into the turf. Rex Ryan is a buffoon who says whatever comes to mind.
