My Number One Tip To Canter On A Horse

  • Today I give you my number one tip to canter on a horse. Cantering on a horse can be hard in the beginning but if you know how to find the correct position you will be doing it like a pro before you know it. This isn't a how-to canter for beginners video BUT the tip in it is just as useful for a beginner as for a more advanced rider.
When I teach people how to canter on a horse this is one of the first tips I teach them (after they have their balance). Like most things horse-related it is all about horse rider position. I hope you find it as valuable as I did when my coach taught me!

This is what I’ve tried to tell my 8 year old granddaughter about. (She takes lessons at a nearby stable and she’s timid to canter). I don’t explain it so she can understand me, plus I can’t SHOW her, since I don’t have a horse. I’m gonna show her you video and see if she doesn’t understand you better.

I find my biggest issue at thr canter is I pinch my knees when I get nervous/unbalanced, which makes me bounce a lot. Your video about following the trot with your pelvis helped me conceptualize "scooping" the canter too -- when I don't pinch my knees, it works beautifully 😅 now I just need to learn to relax! It doesn't help that for my entire childhood of riding I was basically only taught to canter in a half seat (hunters) lol

  • @ArizonaAirspace
    @ArizonaAirspace Год назад +7

This is a very good advice. I remember when I started riding years ago, I started with hunter seat and transition to Dressage required correcting my seat first. I had to to learn to sit back. I mean further than I thought I was vertical at first. My perception was that I was vertical and yet watching my video taught me I was still forward of the vertical line. Also you have to open up your thighs and let your legs drop into your stirrups. You have to relax your thighs and contact lightly only with your lower calves. Make sure your stirrup leathers are neither TOO LONG or too short. Most people ride with stirrups way too long to emulate show riders who also ride with too long stirrups. Watch the old a grand masters and they ride stirrups short enough to drop their heels lower than their toes.

I actually like to ask my teacher to film me, then I watch the video again and can really see whats wrong. I really learnt like this to go with the horse flow with my hips as I was just crushing on myself before. Also I practice Western from time to time, and I realised I was asking from 0 to 100% for an order, like to back for example (like my reins are down then UP then DOWN then UP) and I had a bit of a heavy hand. Because I don't have a lot of strenght I didnt think so and I actually realised it while whaching the video. I kept this in mind, and the next lesson we did it again, and my hands were so smoooth and light I was really happy seeing myself improving in just one week. Now I try to keep in mind to ask 10%, then 20% if I don't have an answer, then 30, etc... but going more progressive in my aids. Filming myself reallly helped me to correct some things.

I was literally going to look up a video like this and this popped up in my recommended! Thank you so much for this, I took quite a few years off riding, and then had to take another break cause of covid, and the thing I feel I lost the most was my canter seat. I love cantering so it's not nervousness, it's most likely technique I lost over the time I haven't ridden. I'll give this a go next time I ride!

I'm SO glad that Raleigh picked you to "judge". You are a fantastic trainer, instructor and rider and I can't wait to see your channel blow up with viewers now that Raleigh showcased the perfect traimer amd deconstructed your video.
I sadly no longer ride due to a medical disability. I was in Pomy Club when I was growing up (an organization that has chapters all over the world and.many Olympic riders went through Pony Club gaining ratings as their skill and knowledge grew. A program I believe in so much and think all kids who are learning to ride will greatly benefit from and will have great success with). My spirit was shattered when I stopped riding. I have regretted it for 25 years, but know it would have been extremely damaging to my body. I am a new subscriber and really enjoy your instruction.
When your seat was "flopping" or "slapping" the saddle, the first thing I said was "sit up, shoulders back and heels down". How often did I hear my coach screaming that from the other side of the arena....just often enough becuse I 2as 14 when I was chosen for the US National Eventing Championships to represent Colorado. I was one of just 4 on my team and I was on the horse we.got.from a very abusive barrel racer. With the instruction from my coach, I retrained that horse and she would jump anything.
If you're watching this trainer's videos you're in the right place. Now go find the vhapter of Pony Club in your area and become a star!

Amelia that is a question the has a very involved answer and not something I can do in a comment on RUclips I’m sorry but I will tell you this. Do not push your boundaries into fear. Just stretch them a little. If that means today you only walk and you feel the edges of your fear then be happy with that. Tomorrow you can trot if you feel more confident. I would perhaps start with some groundwork. Learn about horses and how they learn/think. Build your confidence with knowledge…that’s what I did and how I tackle the first ever sit on an unstarted horse.
It is hard once you lose your confidence but it’s not impossible. X sorry I’m not more help.

I'm confused. I was told by one trainer (dressage) "Sit! Sit! Sit" which I was doing until I started cantering. Now, my hunter/jumper trainer tells me not to sit in the seat like a sack of potatoes and tells me to kind of hover over the seat. Am I sitting, hovering or what? I just want to do it the correct way.

I had the same issue...I started in stage and was told to sit deep, to connect my seatbones with their back. Then I switched to hunt seat and got the same lecture. I finally decided it's just 2 different styles of riding.

Aren’t you supposed to have your heels down as well ? Just asking as my coach keeps telling me that.

My GOD, give the horse some neckspace - why are you pulling its head and therefore its mouth and neck constantly!? That's so unnecessary - stop clutching the horse as if you'd fall off otherwise! You are forcing it into an unnatural position and for what? This is no way of riding an animal that needs its full neck length to balance when stumbling etc. I can't even watch this.

Two months ago when I had just started to learn how to canter I opened my hips unconsciously and fell off the horse back landing on my left foot 😢 I got fractured heel joint and ruptured ligaments I’m still recovering from the injury. I feel so sad now that my training had to stop. I really want to go back to back horse training! I need encouragement 🥲
