Love the portion where you imply the butterfly effect to the belt tensioner failure ! Superb editing. Thanks
Hello Yomi Thank you and you are welcome
Its funny how small thing control our fate!
Thanks for always tuning in=)
Cheers!
Thanks again Mike for another great lesson! And I love your conclusion that the car survived *because* of a failure. [Mine had a similar story - I found that one of the dual-fuel-pump feeder tubes was completely blocked - so the engine ran on only the right bank of cylinders, which must have been so frustrating that the previous owner (my friend, also) gave up and parked it.] You sir are a rare breed to tackle all aspects of these fine autos, and your willingness to share this deep knowledge is equally selfless and unique. We ALL anxiously look forward to the day when you first drive it out of your neighborhood!
Thanks Woodbury, It is amazing the variety of things that determine how these old classics are left for dead..sometimes can be the simplest of things. At least we now now how to proceed .
Looking forward to that first drive!
Cheers!
I've never seen the insides of a Porsche flat six before.. You make it all look so easy.. I guarantee that you burnt much midnight oil doing your research before you touched it with a spanner.. My favourite video of yours so far..
Thanks Pip,
It actually wasn’t to bad. I did do considerable reading and research before diving in.
Cheers!
Like the tear down videos. Very Cathartic! Nice work! 🤓🤘🥳
Thank luvinlife..I didn't know teardowns could be effective n that way.
Cheers!
Exciting times. Getting close now
Hope all is well, Mike. Looking forward to the next update.
Hello Dan
All is well thanks! were kind of stuck in a holding pattern at the moment.. Sourcing engine parts has been really difficult but finally getting what we need. Also machine work at Ollies is a patience and waiting game. I would look for something new on the horizon by months end with luck.
Thanks for checking in and will post soon!
~Cheers
Bravo 👍👍👍
Pretty cool, Mike. Never seen inside a 911 motor before. Looks like she'll clean up just fine!
Hello Chris
Its pretty cool inside, I can see why the massive following of the early air-cooled.
Very different than conventional water cooled
Cheers!
Mike, I hope my surgeon next week has the same calm, detailed, methodical traits you have!!
Hello Rafael
Im sure he will handle you with the greatest of care
Good luck with your surgery!
-Cheers!
Yes. Engine time.
I’m sure this will be a thing of beauty as always Mike
Hi Mooney thanks..Yes planning on a visually satisfying build=)
Cheers!
Great video Mike! Glad you didn’t find anything too disastrous! Looking forward to you reconditioning everything and putting it back together!
Hello Paul Thanks
After cleaning parts all day it gives me a better idea what in front of me. It will need quite a few new parts
but with luck the crank will fly and the case is really in outstanding condition. Heads look okay
but cams and cam tower will probably not make it.
Will keep you posted!
Cheers!
I see silicone sealant! I hate silicone. Great video, now you can clean and measure everything.
Hey Kurt!
Yes lots silicone 😆..it’s everywhere I hate it too!
Just watch your final assembly video on the 902. Out of this world! You are awesome!
I was just checking in as there hasn't been an update in a while. I read where you in holding pattern with some parts issues at the moment. That has to be frustrating especially getting so close to finish line. I hope all is well and look forward to when you can get back to it.
Hello quicktastic.
We have finally able to acquire some difficult parts to source. The waiting game has been a real test of patience. Porsche has been out of stock on some of these parts and most are coming from Germany. Part of the issue would be patiently waiting Ollie's lead on what to order based on the work they are performing.. sizing etc.. We're making good progress and I expect things to be back on track over the next 2-3 weeks.
Thanks for checking in
-Cheers!
Absolutely amazing work as ever, Mike, you are SO close!!!!!! I can't wait to hear that key turn
Hello Phil
Thanks, yes we are closing in on here..the rest of it pretty much down hill from here.
Looking forward to that first drive!
Cheers!
@@MikesRestorations It must be some feeling to be so close... Great stuff buddy,
Always a pleasure to watch you work! I recently rebuilt a simpler engine, (BMW M10) and enjoyed every minute. I’m looking forward to enjoying your build vicariously.
Hello Michael Thanks,
Engine can be a lot of fun to build..Its just the teardown and cleaning I could live without..
Much prefer bolting on nice clean shinny parts!
Cheers!
Been looking forwards to this. Can't wait to see how it turns out during and after your magic touch.
Thanks Mutley
Its hard to believe its finally time..thought it would never get here=)
Cheers!
Thank you for the engine video, I'm looking to address a valve guide issue and an aggravating oil leak in the near future on my 911. Your headliner video inspired me to tackle my own headliner and happy to report excellent results.
Hello John, You are welcome
Im glad the headliner video was of some help! and nice results for you=)
Cheers!
Another great video! I especially liked the music, just a touch of minor key melancholy in sympathy with the life this car has led. Most videos like this have horrendous music that distracts from the audio, so thanks!
Hello Ken Thanks
I appreciate the feedback on the music. RUclips audio library can be a little rough but there are some Gems in there.
Cheers!
Hi Mike, hope you are well. I've really enjoyed all your previous work and learned so much along the way, but this is the bit i've been waiting for. As usual you made it look so easy. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
Hello Pedro thanks
I’m glad we are finally on. The home stretch! I’m looking forward to that first drive😀
Cheers!
Outstanding presentation! as usual. Really look forward to your meticulous videos, always learn something keep them coming Mike!
Hello Mark
Thank you Im glad you are enjoying the series and able to get something from it.
Looking forward to that first drive!
Cheers!
Another great video Mike. I have waited for this one for years. Both you and the car have come such a long way; the car is beautiful, and the production quality of your videos is excellent. You should be very proud.
Hello Brett! There's a voice from the past! I thought we might have lost you there..
Im thrilled with the outcome and looking forward to that first drive!
Its great to hear form you, Cheers!
@@MikesRestorations I watch all of the videos; I just don't comment much any more. And I cannot wait for the first drive video.
Another great video Mike! I have been looking forward to this part of the build. I cannot wait to watch you do your magic on the engine parts to get them looking like new again. It will be very informative and fun to watch. Thank you!
Thank you! I will try my best to bring it back to life😄!
Good news that there is nothing disastrous with your engine. After seeing your carburetors, I have no doubt this engine is going to look amazing! Is it the 2 liters 911 or 911s engine?
Thanks 27
Yes it is a 2liter or 2.0
Case.
Cheers!
YESSSSSS finally Mike you have started the engine rebuild 😮🔧🏁🏁🔥🔥
Hello Richard, Yes its on!=)
Can't wait until the first drive
Cheers!
I have been waiting for this part. Thought you'd taken the engine to Kurt
Hello Remco
Its finally engine time..We will build the engine here but send things out for machine work.
Kurt sure has done a masterful job on our 902! That man is simply amazing.
Cheers!
He’s a legend…
Mike great videos! You should have a thread on Early S Registry!
Thanks Drew
If only I had more time!=)
Cheers!
Love the project. Mike, any update on the engine and completing the car?
Hello Gerald
Thanks I'm glad you are enjoying the project. At the moment we are still rounding up critical engine parts and awaiting final machine work from Ollie's. I would expect things to move forward in the next 2-3 weeks as most of the parts have finally been sourced.
Will be rolling soon!
-Cheers
Hey Mike, just re-watched this video after your video update today. Such an amazing transformation. Mind boggling to consider the downfall of this car was the modified chain tensioner? And as you put it, we are grateful for that chain tensioner failure, as it allows us this great content. 😂😂😂
Thanks Derek
Yes its funny how these little things in life turn into bigger things down the road
45 years later! wow!!
I Love your Work and your Videos so much can't Of the next Part of Videos you do a master Job ❤️👍❤️👍
Hello Pascal
Thank you I'm glad you are enjoying the series
Cheers!
bearings looked excellent, looks like a home run. have you tried vapor blasting? aluminum comes out fantastic with that process
Hello Amundsen
Yes it looks fairly clean inside.. I have some experience with vapor blasting it does work wonders. The carburetors and manifold were vapor blasted and came out beautiful
@@MikesRestorations the carbs came out fantastic
Mike, you OK? So close, Got anything? Years in the making and we want to see "the Baby" on the road again. Please give us a fix. LOL
Hello Tufkman
Everything okay here thanks! We are in another holding pattern at the moment.. patiently awaiting parts and machine work on many parts of the engine. I have a couple videos in the works but unable to finish due to timing and parts with other associates.
Hang in there..Will have something meaningful soon!
-Cheers
Is the number 1 cam gear on backwards? Great restoration..
Thank you Willie
Yes indeed the left sprocket was installed backwards..You are extremely observant!
Cheers!
I noticed that one of the studs that secures the left side chain box to the case, was broken off.. did it break when you undid the nut or is it a previous issue? Was it leaking a lot?
Hi Michael
I’m not sure exactly what you saw or where.. most studs were removed prior to disassembly, the remaining studs have all been removed since. I don’t see any broken stud. It’s possible you see a recessed dowel locating pin? There are several on the case
With the results of the "chain tension piece" failure/damage are you now bound to also replace the aluminium casing that the chain damaged ? Or is that damage liveable ?
Hello Graham ,
In this case it looks as if we dodged a bullet on most critical areas. The abrasion in the housing is cosmetic in nature and will be fine to reuse the housing.
However sprockets, chains, guides and tensioners will need replacing
Typo in thumbnail. solved!
Hello Bob
You sure did!😆great detective work..
Will need to get it sorted out.
Thanks for the heads up!
Cheers
So is plan to vapor blast parts to return finish to original? And will you modify covers to use pressure fed tensioners or will you keep that original?
I really hope it gets vapour blasted, it will truly be the icing on the cake if Mike does that.
Hi Jeff
Still putting a plan together and taking inventory. As for finishes the verdict is still out on that depending the part being refinished.
I will consult with Kurt on the tensioners. I’m leaning on keeping it original but making whatever upgrades are necessary for proper function on all upgraded service bulletins.
What engine stand are you using?
Hello rj
I’m using a Pittsburg by harbor frieight 1/2 ton The yolk is something I picked up several years back on ebay
@@MikesRestorations thanks! I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot.
Are you upgrading to fuel injection?
Hello desmomoto
Sticking with original weber carburetor set up
