Quick clarification - this is indeed B20 bronze. I was skeptical based on Zildjian's marketing language and the cost implications, but the project lead was kind enough to chime in and confirm the alloy used. Maybe that's part of the magic?
The "bell brass" is the hangover that never go away!!! Caused by TAMA calling a drum they made from bronze "bell brass" they is no brass in these drums. Bronze in B20 is 80% copper/20% tin. Brass is copper and zinc. There never seems to be any info why Tama called a bronze drum brass. I wonder if it was a marketing thing where they though people don't know what bronze is they wont buy it so lets call it brass and they know that?
It sounds amazing and I love the little touches with the throwoff and the buttplate/drum key holder. Very cool! Also really dope that Zildjian got a small drummaker involved. Personally for 4 Gs I would hope it also makes omelettes and vacuums my house...
@@alsdrumhang I don't believe it's B20 bronze. That said, an average cymbal might weigh somewhere around 4.5lbs whereas this thing is 24lbs. Again, not really saying it is/isn't worth it, but worth noting cost of materials.
You are so underratted. And I hate that phrase with a passion. But you have been putting out fantastic videos at high quality for years and yet only 5k subs? crazy. awesome video(s)!
Yeah this drum is a beauty for sure and I love the sound of it. As for the price… well, it’s a niche offering from a high end company so I’m not really surprised. I mean, us lowly drummers aren’t as used to exclusive offerings or fine goods but I think of it like this… you can get a Bulova watch or a Rolex, both tell time but one is more for status and luxury. Shoot, in the designer world there are probably Tom Ford or Louis Vuitton sunglasses at 4k… I’d pick the drum all day everyday.
probably my fav. bell bronze snare... ever. got one, love it. was it worth 4K? what snare is worht 4K? but you want one, that's what you got to pay, unfortunately... To me a better overall package then the current Tama Bell Brass 50th version and that costs 4k. Don't understand why all major drum manufacturers thought drummers all of sudden became rich... 🤨
Nice drum, terrific playing as usual, and some very keen insights, but if this snare is worth &4K any Keppy is worth twice that price at least. Cheers.
I went to a big drum store and got a beast like this years ago (Gretsch Phosphor Bronze). They told me that it was the loudest snare they had in the store and that it can go up against the Tama BB any day. I believe their statements were accurate. Definitely louder, plus sounds great (& tunes easy). However I do have a brass snare that gets used more, bc it’s also awesome…and much lighter.
Sounds alot like a Tama Bell Brass for sure. But more ringy!First drum I've heard released that hit that kind of sound apart from Declan White's Cusworth drums.
Sounds like a drum made with Zildjians version of B20 bronze. To me feels a bit like a novelty drum, I’d actually take a £200 steel drum over this one any day. I normally love bronze drums (oh and copper drums), but this one meh didn’t feel it tbh.
think I'd take my keplinger over these 3 new boat anchors to choose from. Hope this brings more of those 80s snares out of hiding for the new gen of drummers.
I may not have heard of Latos drums per-say, but I have seen a few of Latos drums snares online. They look very nice and did peak interest. This is a very special snare not many companies are 400 yeas old. Zildijan are one of the oldest musical companies and making a snare from their secret recipe is something rare. It sounds great and I will give them a pass on the price. It's a birthday celebration, limited addition, and 5mm thick casting of their B20 bronze isn't cheap. Along with the fact Zildjian don't make anything else with their B20, when they do it's pretty special. A collectors piece for sure but can be beaten to make sweet music for years. Would love one, maybe one day.
I think you're spot on. I will mention though I don't believe this is B20 bronze - but I don't mind. B20 shells have a tendency to crack, I imagine this is something a little more durable.
YUP that low tuning as soon as I heard it, very very very nice. Good job tuning it too. As far as the pricing of these goes, it's just my guess that they are priced for studios just like DAWs and plugins. As long as studios keep paying, the price will stay that way. Yes yes the quality and workmanship, I know. Maybe it's the just "jewelry"/shiny factor for some players? I don't know, I don't think I need one.
I just built a 14/6.5 and the 5/3/5 shell cost me $750 from Guven metal in Turkey. So the shells cetrianly aren't something "cheap" , If you then work out the tooling costs to make hardware for only a 400 runs (or CNC) that isn't cheap either.
The drum sounds good. But just like Tama bell brass, not worth the price, if you are buying it just for the sound. A collectable piece for those who can afford, though
I don't know if you realized it or not, but when you tuned it high, you went "Stewart Copeland". As for the snare, its clearly awesome, meant for a professional drummer or Studio.Oh and the Japanese who buy & hoard them so they can sell it for $30k in 15 years ! 😂🤣😂
I'm not sure how one quantifies a $4K snare drum as "worth it" ...I mean it's not likely going to go up in value and from a sound perspective it's great but not anything you can't get for considerably less. So you gotta have the disposable income and just want it as a collectors item.
Lacks body and depth to my ear. The only reason I'd buy one is to flip it for a profit down the line. I had custom made sand cast bronze snares from both Oriollo and Duluth made to my exact specs for about $1100 each. They sound miles better, and are totally unique when it comes to lug count, size/diameter, and bearing edge shape/snare bed profiles. This trend of $4,000+ cast bronze drums is absurd beyond belief, and anyone that buys into it is getting taken for a ride.
Might be made well and all of that..but its not very warm overtones sound a bit harsh and metallic alot of these Boutique type drums to me dont blend in much..its like here i am i prefer old school drums more organic and musical all these type of drums ate over rated not to mention the price

@@ColeParamore Ya you did tune it super well!!!
Medium low tuning at 5:30 sounds the best 2me. Do you think this sounds much better in person than the average top quality 1,200 snare drum?
Nice sounding drum. Worth 4k, no way. And Zildjian should have had Noble & Cooley build this snare, like they did originally (no knock-on Latos).

How much does the Tama BB weigh? It seems like this Z400 snare and the Paiste 2002 are the heavy weights!
I'm not 100% sure but I think it's similar. I did a video comparing a bunch of super heavy snares and this one is near the top of that range.
