This is why they didn’t use in-game footage for trailers back then.
Or, at the very least, didn't use the in-game engine for cinematics. November 1999 would've been two months after Final Fantasy VIII made it to the US, and the cinematics from that still slap.

4K is a joke, especially here on pooptube. 1080p looks like 480p and 4K is 720p at best. Sometimes the videos are corrupted to the point you can't even call it anything "p" because it's just random heavy glitching, something like when your GPU is dieing. They seriously need to stop butchering this platform but unfortunately that will never happen long as google own YT.

Low polygon graphics can be more creepy than high polygon ones. Silent hill 1 had disturbing low poly enemies.

as for ps1, totally. the static faces look like masks, which are automatically creepy. the vertex snapping causes every 3d model to jitter especially when animated. the affine textures distort depending on view angle, like some nightmare. ps1 was made for horror. also watch MrKravin play pixelated horror games.
I believe that comes in more into an idea of its distorted appearance and how if it were to be created in the real world it would only leave one to think of what it could actually compare to

Power Drill Massacre (and the other games of the same developer) show us that low poly/abstract creatures in a well made low poly/abscract scenario can be as scary as any modern horror game. Another example is Until dawn, for me, the PS3 demo is a lot scarier than the ps4 full version

But nowadays graphics and future's graphics isn't much apart besides more unnecessary pixels and better textures. The next step would be sharper image, this ray tracing stuff and probably VR. 144p vs 1080p is obviously more noticable than 1080p and 4k cause after a certain point it's becoming less apparent (obviously)

Going back to MGS1 from 1998 you'd be surpised how "modern" that game's presentation feels. The guy who made this utterly nailed the MGS1 look with the Death Stranding aesthetic.

Ive been playing Silent Hill recently and I just got to say, I'm really impressed. This is so accurate, down to the 3D models shivering as the camera pans. Great job.

@@bonjolor8298 Well, not the coders, putting it very simply, PSX doesn't have comprehensive floating number acceleration on an hardware level, so, to get an acceptable frame-rate, programmers round numbers, because calculating integers was a lot faster. Side effect? Warping.

This is a little too advanced for PS1, but fits Nintendo DS's graphical powers much closer.
This is absolutely NOT too advanced for the origininal Playstation. Character poly count is well within margins, so is detail scenery.
@@Khunvyel Nope. No z-fighting. PS1 has no Z-Buffer. Also, you're got way too many textures loaded at once. PS1 only has 1MB of VRAM, and has a maximum texture size of 256x256, thought 128x128 was more common due to said 1MB size limitations. You have far too many textures visible in several points in the video. At minimum, that's 64kb per texture, you can't have that many textures loaded at once.
@Justus Bowman If you think that the PS1 can load 256x256 textures for Norman reedus's face with only 1MB of VRAM and 2kb of texture cache, you're delusional.
Also, PS1 doesn't have a Z-Buffer. This means that tiled textures would warp and z-fight if this were attempted on a real PS1.

@@Null_Experis I encourage you to actually look which assets are displayed at any given time of the video. Then I want you to look at games like Fifa 2005, which was one of the last games released for the playstation and look at the models displayed and the textures required to run them in total. Then look at this trailer again and see what is actually displayed. Then I encourage you to look at the polycount and resolution of Tekken 3 models for example, which were outstanding for their time too. There wasn't much happening other than two models fighting as the rest was skyboxed and with a static ground, but even there you still had graphics to load for the skybox and the ground, similar to here. There are ways to fake z-buffering or making it believable by working around it. You don't need to restrict yourself to make a 1:1 possible replica for it. This is very much believable and in the realm of possibility with a handful of tweaks. Do not view this as a "gameplay" trailer. Swapping into high poly models for "ingame-ish" cinematics has been an old hat. The name of the game that did this on PS1 to provide an example eludes me at the moment, but I'm pretty sure other commenters can chime in.
Developers for the original Playstation have made fantastic strides in order to pull out as much from the console as they could by coding as efficiently as possible. Just look at the first batch of games released for it, and then look at the last batch and tell me they look all the same.

Pixelated graphics do have their own appeal outside of nostalgia, and the game's great direction and themes shine through even ps1 visuals. The animation and music also really drive it home.

we're at the progress where even pc can't handle this game. 100 megabytes, 1 GIGABYTE or even more - that would be too expensive and you'd buy alot of memory cards and build a huge castle. devs of this game are really trying to make it good, they do the futuristic graphics, but that's what leads this game to be the game which noone could play for future 2-5 years.

as for ps1, totally. the static faces look like masks, which are automatically creepy. the vertex snapping causes every 3d model to jitter especially when animated. the affine textures distort depending on view angle, like some nightmare. ps1 was made for horror. also watch MrKravin play pixelated horror games.

oh yes most PS1 models had eyes, the models in metal gear solid didnt have any recognizable facial features because that was it's art-style. check final fantasy 7, all of those models have eyes. why you dont see them clearly? because of the PS1's resolution, that is why everything is so pixelated. you only see them clearly when the camera gets close.

This was never considered cutting edge at the time. Graphically, the only cutting edge visual aspect of the PS1 were the CGI cinematics. Everything else looked absurdly worse than what its main contemporary competitor, the N64, pulled off, as soon as it was released in 1996.
I thought this stuff was pretty real too, then PS2 came out and I thought that was the max. I really didn't think graphics could possibly improve from PS2 at the time.
Honestly that still looks like a game I would play, shows how direction and passion can trump graphics any day.
