In case you guys are interested here I'll explain the meaning behind these MVs: (I probably won't be able to reply to you if you mention me because RUclips doesn't let me but I can see everything!) Ian is making a storyline based on his life dealing with bipolar disorder type I and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). There are three main "characters" in this storyline: Mito, Mr Insanity and The Hybrid. His first two albums focused on Mito while his most recent one 'Dear Insanity' focused on Mr Insanity and that's why they're so distinct. I’ll only talk about Mito here since in these songs he was the only one already introduced. These aren't just characters, they are real people that have a mind of their own called "alters" (short for alternate state of consciousness) and that he coexists with. In DID there's more than one person living in the same body with different memories, voice tone, body language, beliefs, motives, etc. DID stems from severe and/or repeated early childhood trauma (particularly before age five). As a coping mechanism the child fragments the mind so the "new person" can deal with the trauma and not the child otherwise it would be unbearable. That person was Mito. That way the child's mind can't fully integrate into one whole identity and instead it becomes multiple. Just like fragments of a mirror, they all work separately but together they form the whole mirror. They form a 'system' which is how people with DID may refer to themselves. The cover of this EP was his picture behind a shattered glass and the physical version had a broken mirror inside the case. Someone with DID only knows this mechanism to cope with trauma: to disassociate and become someone else. So they unconsciously switch between identities as they are exposed to stress and also more identities can be formed throughout their lives. Mito (the acronym for Moodswings In This Order) is the "protector alter" since he was created by the mind to deal with any trauma and to be the one who remembers them so Ian can forget it. Mito is is represented in MVs by wearing black, with a deep voice, missing an eye because of white contact lenses and wearing a ring with an eyeball. The association of Mito with an eye is due to the fact that the ‘eye’ symbolism is important to him because him as a visual director recognizes that the best lenses of the world are the eyes. So when he switches into Mito and his world flips, it’s like he loses one eye. He also has trouble looking at himself properly in the mirror, he always closes one eye, which probably also inspired this notion. That's because he has a hard time processing who he is. Ian is the prominent identity, the one who stays the longest in the body (called the "host"). In very stressful situations Ian blacks out and Mito takes control of the mind in order to protect him (he's the one "fronting" ps. there's also cofronting meaning more than one alter in control at the same time.) Ian then will come back hours, days, weeks later (the longest that it has been was a month) not remembering anything that was said or done. Basically his life has been lived and he doesn't know how. In the so Beautiful' the intro it says: *“Before I change again* (Before he switches to Mito again) *Remind me of the times when I still remembered.* (Talking about the memory gaps. How once he comes back to the body he needs to figure out all that was said and done by Mito) *“I can feel it coming (thunder sounds)”* He had been studying thunder and lightning for years just so he could understand its behavior to implement it into his editing. Everytime it rains he likes to go outside, sit there and film it. Thunder/lighting will be used frequently in his music videos. Here the black and white scenes are all Mito. It was the first time that Ian switched on camera. He had a black out and when he came back he asked "When are the cameras going to start rolling?" and the camera operator answered "We have already done 3 takes of it". Ian has no recollection of filming these scenes. He said it was hard to edit these scenes and see Mito for the first time. There were some scenes that he couldn't leave in. The MV feels like a werewolf transformation which is meant to represent his DID switches. 'Wolves' are mentioned a lot in this lyrics and he posts a full moon, half moon or black moon in his instagram bio to indicate to fans who's fronting the most, who's most in control of the mind (Mr Insanity, Ian, or Mito). Also, he said when he's manic he has a lot of auditory hallucination of whistles, that's probably why they are incorporated in some of his songs, like this one. About No Blueberries this is what he had to say: “‘No Blueberries’, […] essentially depicts the idea of when you’re so obsessed with something that you let that enrage you, so it talks about fear and a lot of resentment. I depicted it as blueberries… I don’t know why. To some people, if they completely just locked on to this in a very negative way, something as small as a blueberry can appear to be a monster. This song talks about anxiety. When someone gets an anxiety attack they get triggered by things that sometimes other people would think of as silly but to that person it could be everything. I wanted to stress that out because when someone has an anxiety attack it’s really important that you treat that matter very seriously. For everyone, it’s a different trigger. But just because it’s not your trigger it doesn’t mean it’s not a problem. ” 210313 DPR Ian IG Live “I actually made that song about two years ago. I remember at the time I was feeling very angry. I don’t know about what but I just figured I’ll make a song about people that you don’t associate yourself with. That you’re not very familiar with and no matter what you do you just can’t connect to them. And I associated that with blueberries” Memories In Disorder Official MITO Documentary About the reason why DPR VISUALS+IAN is flipped, it's because Ian used to only direct and edit music videos for other artists. In those cases he used to put his signature in normal orientation. However, since now he is in front of the camera the signature is mirrored, meaning that he's now an artist as well as a director. Well, thanks a lot for the reaction! Hopefully you plan to react to his other MVs in chronological order (?). Pay attention that for the Dear Insanity era storywise he released in reverse. It's Peanut Butter & Tears ==> Don't Go Insane ==> Don't Go Insane Teaser ==> So I Danced. Anyway I'll be waiting for more!
