Yes sir. Never missed a beat. That's what decades of playing acoustic music can do. Just as amazing as Ralph's save was the quick string change and tune the mandolin player accomplished! Whew!
Ralph is, & was, a Prodigy. The guy still hasn’t gotten the due respect and reverence for his talent that he deserves. He was one in a million. Best voice I’ve ever heard
I went to my great uncle Jimmy Martins house growing up and I remember Ol Pete. He had a lot of dogs . He made me cry laughing everytime I saw Jimmy. He was the BEST !!!!!! My dad got his first bird dog from Jimmy
Exactly! Bill Monroe may have been the one who originally assembled the music ( and he's definitely one of the greatest musicians of all time), but these two perfected the music :)
I'm so thankful for utube and clips like this, I meet both, Jimmie martin was a hoot! He tried to pick up girlfriend about 30 yrs younger then him I was honored! Woodstown NJ bluegrass festival 1994 or 1995
Two legends right there!!! I was fortunate enough to watch the Stanley Brothers in Maynardville, TN years ago at a Redgate Festival!! I love bluegrass music!!!!
You get Bil Monroe up there you would have the 3 best indisputable bluegrass pickers of all time period!!! Not even up for debate. Fact not Opinion!!!!
Wonderful recording including the warm repartee among these two venerable Bluegrass giants. Love their song choices- “Rabbit in a Log” - a fave- great lyrics!
@@dukeofearlbanjo well did he lie about it? Or was he wrong by titling his self that? What are you saying I mean, he carried that title for decades. That's an awful long time to carry something if he lied, or if he was wrong for doing that. By the way, do you really know why he titled his self that way back years ago?
I have pictures with Ralph too😊 I used to go to all the gatherings around my area got to sit & talk with him on the bus sometimes. Kinda like a friend from far away😎
I have a cowboy hat with Jimmy's autograph on one side, and Ralph's on the other side. It was at a festival in Crum West Virginia called Bobby's riverbend bluegrass festival. Closing out Jimmy and his band, then Ralph and his band. Then it was Jimmy and Ralph together on the last show. Never forget that night.
The set's kind of a mess (strings breaking, etc,) but they keep pulling it out of the fire. Also, they're both in perfect pitch live while playing an instrument.
No kidding? In case you were not kidding, Jimmy first became popular in the early 50s as rhythm guitar player and lead singer for Bill Monroe. Jimmy helped write and recorded with Bill songs including “Uncle pen“, “little George Rose“, and “Letter from my darling“. These have endured to be bluegrass standards. Jimmy left Bill and formed a trio with Sonny and Bobby, The Osborne Brothers Andilable on RCA Victor Records. Finally, Jimmy formed his own group called “the Sunny Mountain boys” , Recording many songs on the Decca, which became MCA, label. Jimmy had a lot of songs that placed highly on the country charts along with Loretta Lynn and others. Sunny side of the mountain, Widowmaker, freeborn Man, Ocean of diamonds, 2020 vision are some of Jimmy‘s signature songs. Famous musicians that worked for Jimmy in those days include Paul Williams, JD Crowe, Bill Emerson, Doyle Lawson, Paul craft, and Alan Munde. Considering the musicians that cut their teeth on his music and his song catalog, Jimmy is still influencing Bluegrass music to this day. He passed away in around 2005.
@@donaldlewis4742 well then you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to bluegrass music. "The king of bluegrass", Mr Jimmy Martin and his sonny mountain boys.
The talk about the Grand ole Opry. The Grand ole Opry ain't nothing. There's as good, if not better bluegrass talent outside the opry. The Opry is a political thing, if you don't someone inside of the Opry that will kiss ass for you, you ain't getting in. Jimmy dam sure wouldn't kiss anybody's ass, didn't have to. Loved that about him
If you are singing Bluegrass and you don’t sound at least a little bit like you are imitating one of these two men (or Bill Monroe), then you ain’t singing Bluegrass.
The way Dr Ralph saved that mandolin player when the string broke, is just a testament to his extreme ear and professionalism.
Audie Blaylock😅
@Mike Bastiat He was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Lincoln University in the 70s

Pure Americana from two of the greats. Life is short so have love, laugh and have fun and live like you mean it!
I was at this festival. It also included a Jimmy Martin / Paul Williams reunion. Double RR Ranch. Little Hocking, Ohio
Pure talent that shall never exist on this earth again.
None better than Ralph & Jimmy
Jimmy and Ralph, 2 of the best ever

Fantastic musicians, Jimmy Martin what a legend of Bluegrass the King..Ralph Stanley superb on banjo.
Ralph sounds like he’s got that banjo capoed on the 164th fret
😂
Each song is meaningful and it's soothing to the soul when you stressed especially this time of pandemic..God bless all the listeners 😍😊
Wonderful stuff. Two of America's greats. I thank God I managed to see them in 2001, the only time but unforgettable. Thankyou for posting.
Never forget a show I played in Kentucky and I came out to the stairwell and there sit Ralph playing angry birds on his cell phone 😂
I've listened to their album enough times the algorithm finally recommended this.

💕 love bluegrass, thank you.
Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are my Top Favorite. The Stanley Brothers are right behind them.
Ralph is the best period
Wrong again people, Jimmy was and always will be the best ever. His title, the king of bluegrass was issued to him for a reason.

The Stanleys are my favorite. Flatt/scruggs a close second. Jimmy was good too, but he didnt have as many songs I liked as the other 2.
This why I RUclips, right here!! ☝️

Wish I was old enough to go
2 guys in their 60's busting out that fast tempo 🤯
Jimmy can get it done don't matter who he sings with
Mandolin player breaks a string in his solo. Changed mandolins, Ralph does the gentlemen's thing, and gives him the solo again.
I think the mandolin player is Audie Blaylock
that was pretty awesome didnt miss a beat
'... and gives him the solo again'
Through his problems with string
Bravo 🤧

To be in that band you need a mustache. Good takes!
Yes, that's Earl Yager (bass)
Archtop banjo with walnut wood and the head Titan to 16 lb with a brass nut and a Bone Bridge 40 hole brass tone ring
Fantastic Abç do Brasil
Ralph capoed outrageously high there. In E ?
Wow
Did Jimmy ever change a guitar string himself?
Good
is that audie blaylock on mandolin
Does anyone know who's playing the dobro in the video?
Anyone know whos on dobro? Is that a young Jerry Douglas?
