I get the fact that kanya daan must have been interpreted differently in earlier times, but today it is a symbol of "giving away" of a girl to another family. It infact, reinforces the patriarchal norms. Also, despite Nita Ambani claiming that there is absolute equality, i dont see her "giving away" her son to the Merchant family, afterall havent they "gained a son" (in her own words).
Declaring "Radhika Merchant" to be Mrs. "Radhika 'Anant' Ambani" says it all. No body bothered to know if she was willing to keep her name, as marriage and such rituals (especially for a girl) implies complete submission. Atleast questioning kanya daan, would question such mentality.
