    No offense to Messmer, but this boss absolutely stole the trailer for me from an already perfect showcasing. The design is impeccable, and something so inspired that I've never seen anything like it. There's so much that you can glean from its less than 30 seconds on screen. If anyone has a design they like as much as I love this eerie creature, please drop it in the responses cause man I haven't stopped thinking about this boss since the trailer dropped.

    As a former traditional lion-dancer, I'm so excited for this boss!
    A couple things I've noticed with the slowed down footage:
    The color of the dancers, is similar to Morgott and other Omen-afflicted enemies.
    The other big thing I noticed while you were talking about the teeth. The inner teeth match that of the traditional frames. Traditionally, "Chinese lions" are vegetarian by myth, hence the really flat-teeth with only a few fangs to show danger and ferocity.
    The outer teeth however, and the slowed clip of the dancer's hand gripping the lower jaw also shows that the upper lips, look like torn skin. Meaning that the inner teeth are part of the frame and the outer teeth are possibly from a skinned lion. Clearly it's an omen-afflicted beast, like the lions we've encountered before. The horns could be from the beast pelt OR they could be from the omen dancers.
    Fantastic analysis!

    9:48 a lot of people are suggesting that could be a deathblight breath attack but It doesn't really have the same coloration as the other death blight breath attacks in the game. It looks more like a beastial breath attack that does physical damage like the other beast incants.

    Maybe grafting wasn’t seen as something abhorrent as we were led to believe when we venture to Stormveil castle but actually a honorable rite of passage in the age of the crucible. In the trailer there’s a lion statue somewhere else that had horns in it almost around an altar or something so it’s just so interesting to see a lot of those preconceived notions the main game gave us almost shattered with this realm of shadow.

    Excellent deep dive! The ornamentation of the Sun at 6:46 is an amazing catch. I have been hypothesizing that the Crucible/Erdtree Aligned were enemies of the long faded Sun Realm. With the growth of the giant Golden Erdtree the light of the Sun is overshadowed you could say.
    With this clearly Crucible aligned Lion Dancer bearing Sun ornamentation it could be the case that at one point the Crucible and the Sun Realm could have been allied, after all any growing tree needs some sunlight to grow. There seem to be many factions that fall under the Sun Realm such as the Banished Knights, the Storm Hawks, the Beast Men, and possibly the Ancient Dragons, this leads me to believe that the Sun Realm was a far reaching empire that incorporated many different cultures.
    The British Empire was called "the empire on which the sun never sets" because of its global control and the amount of cultures subjugated to its colonialism. The Crucible could be one of those cultures or colonies that were subjugated to Sun Realm rule, but through war and revolt, the Sun Realm is faded and forgotten and the Erdtree is the dominant power within the Lands Between. One master traded for another, one empire for another.
    It would then make sense as to why the King of Beasts, Serosh, would be associated with the leader of the Crucible Knights and warlord who fought to establish the Age of the Erdtree, Horah Loux.
    "They were never saints, they were just on a losing side of a war"
    If you have no idea what Im talking about I am sorry lol

    I suspect that the Land of Shadow might be tied to the Lands Between in a "as above, so below" way, in which case I suspect the Lion Dancer might be the Land of Shadow's embodiment of the Golden Lineage. The lion itself would be Serosh and Godfrey, of course. The lightning it wields would represent Godwyn the Golden at his height, and the smoke it exhales would represent Godwyn at his nadir (Deathblight). The Omen horns would represent Morgott, who is of the Golden Lineage and at the start of the game, the only true member of the Golden Lineage who is active in the Lands Between (Godrick was adopted, or you could say, "grafted" onto the family tree).

  • @kormana
    @kormana 4 месяца назад +1

  • @arlaux
    @arlaux 4 месяца назад

    We know that the guardian lions are not like how they used to be, they previously came in a different form known as Golden Lions which were much more beloved and well treated. Golden Lions are on Radahn’s armor for example. We can safely assume that these Golden Lions don’t exist in the current order of the Erdtree, but that they might have previously. Since the Shadow Lands seem to have been isolated and don’t seem impacted by the affairs of the Lands Between it might be that this lion pelt is from a Golden Lion as it would have existed previously. We’re not going back in time, but the culture of the Shadow Lands seems to have been effectively put into stasis.
    A lot of people assume Radahn’s armor features iconography of Serosh, but it lacks facial scarring too. My idea is that Serosh is a member of this Golden Lion species of which Guardian Lions, Radahn’s armor iconography, and this pelt are all part of (or bringing to mind) too.

  • @michaeljohnston8891
    @michaeljohnston8891 4 месяца назад

    Few things I thought I’d add about the design of the arena and boss.
    The golden shoulder pauldrons are very similar to those seen on Mohg’s robes. I’ve always been intrigued about his talk of a dynasty amidst the ruins of the Ancient Dynasty, and I have a suspicion that he’s surrounding himself with the finery and imagery of what is likely a precursor civilization to the Golden Order. Real world rulers do the same thing, appropriating imagery and customs to help legitimize their rule.
    I think you might be onto something about a potential Misbegotten connection. While the boss superficially resembles a lion, its face is an uncanny mix of humanoid and leonine features, much like what we see with the Misbegotten. I also find the design of its mane a bit curious, as it’s matted almost like it’s wet. The trees in the background, quite puzzlingly, have the same golden, matted “hair” hanging from them. But the real kicker is that the Prince of Death also sports similar hair.
    Speaking of Death, however, I don’t think its breath attack is inflicting Deathblight. The grey mist is missing the golden flecks we see in Fia’s mist and the basilisk spit. It’s much more reminiscent of the rock breath that the Stray Demon in DS3 uses.
    Keeping on the topic of Death, there’s a very interesting detail hidden in the background of the shot with the dancer’s jumping lunge. On the stairs between the brazen lion statues, there’s three layers of this white, flabby looking substance draped over the steps. If you ask me, this looks like freshly peeled Godskin

  • @Lilbird2fye
    @Lilbird2fye 4 месяца назад

    Well they shadow land definitely has inspiration from grafted or combined animals… so a misbegotten lion wouldn’t be surprising. Also the lands seems to those who are without light, so a twisted version of erdtree

  • @-willowthewisp-
    @-willowthewisp- 4 месяца назад

    I actually think that breath attack is more in line with the stone beast incantations we get from Gurranq. It looks grey and you can see stones flying up from the ground from the force of the attack. It's missing the signature black/gold look of the death blight mist and I don't think just the mist would have the force to sheer rock from the ground like that.

    Good video! Regarding the source of inspiration for this boss, there is another one besides the Chinese Lion Dance, which is the French Tarasque, a mythological creature.
    Here's a brief summary from Wikipedia: "the beast had a lion-like head, a body protected by turtle-like carapace(s), six feet with bear-like claws, a serpent's tail, and could expel a poisonous breath."
    There are festitivies where a Tarasque effigy is paraded, with people inside of it (similar to the Lion Dance). And commonly it has a turtle shell with twisted horns (just like the omen horns that the new boss has).

    • @rickiryuin
      @rickiryuin 4 месяца назад

      @@kitetales I didn't really make the connection to the Flame Chariots because those are more like a giant face fire tank haha 😅😅.
      Now the Tarasque on the other hand shares many elements with this new boss, particularly the lion head, the twisted horns in its body, the poisonous breath attack (although the boss could be expelling something else from its mouth instead of poison), and the numerous feet (and of course the fact that people parade inside a Tarasque costume in a similar fashion to the Lion Dance).
      So I guess we could say this boss is a very interesting mix of eastern and western cultures.

    I think they might also be grafted omens who worships a crucible religion. Foot looks just like Morgott's feet, the height is correct too.
    They may or may not be grafted, as that used to be a practice related to the crucible and ''mixing animal parts''; but that's part is just a guess. Crucible aspects used to be holy after all.
    Good analysis. Take this subscription, tarnished!

    I don’t think the Lion is using a deathblight incantation. I think it’s a bestial incantation, like Gurranq’s rock throws…which makes sense because that arena looks very similar to Farum Azula.

    Since they use golden lighting witch originates from godwyn my little theary is that these two are omen twins sons of godwyn
    We know godwyn was an honorable demigod who befriended the dragons so i don't think he would be cool with casting he's sons into the sewers
    So instead he "banished" them to the land of shadow a burning land of war yes but still a land we're they would be free and we're they would be able to make their own destiny

    I have a very controversial take on this guy. See if you like it!
    I think this guy is Godwynn..
    1. Deathblight magic
    2. Ligthning magic (reminiscent of his friendship with the dragons)
    3. Golden Hair with braids, which really remembers his image at the opening cinematic.
    4. Godwynn was son of Godfrey, he was touched by the crucible.
    5. It is said Miquela let go of his Flesh and all things golden to enter the Lands of Shadow. Maybe Miquela went ther to put an end to Godwynn (as told in the sword Golden Epitaph)
    6. This one is a big leap, but Godrick the Grafted may not be the first one to use grafting.

    It's interesting to me that in a game based almost entirely on European mythology, that the pre-golden order culture seems to have east Asian influences. Kind of apt honestly, that a European based culture took over and demonized the existing culture that was already there. It'll be cool to see just how much east Asian influence is in the crucible aspects of the game.

    I think they hunted the Lions and wore their skins to scare the other lions. The lions eventually won, and we're brought to the future realm. It's a lot like the snakes on the bronze helmets. I think this is a cerimonial boss before the real boss. I also think it's a showcase of multilegged beings over uneven terain.
