  • Bertha Vazquez is a former school teacher, the director of education at the Center For Inquiry and the director of TIES (Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science). A long time ally in nurturing reason and critical thinking among children, she is passionate about training teachers across America in teaching evolution and science in ways that work. I was delighted to learn about her work in awakening a spirit of curiosity and inquiry in young students, and how TIES programs like Generation Skeptics and Save Science are changing the nature of school education and scientific learning.
Thanks to Anthony Trecek-King for generously providing all of the footage, setting up the cameras and microphones.

Dawkins sits mute/deaf/moronic as actual accomplished biologists, Nobel laureates Hartwell & Altman
and Craig Venter ALL say "it is impossible that humans will EVER know life's origin". BUT THAT'S his
entire raison d'etre; responding to life's origin. Other than that "open Kimono" he has NO contribution
whatsoever. It's certainly not his first page of chapter 4 of The God Delusion where he disputes physicist/atheist
Fred Hoyle's; "life beginning naturally on earth is as likely as a hurricane assembling a fully functioning Boeing 747
going through a junkyard". Dawkins "corrects" Hoyle by enlightening him regarding the miracle of natural selection .
It wouldn't seem possible someone could be so ignorant, unless you had followed Dawkins' hucksterism. The
2nd Law of Thermodynamics NEVER/EVER/EVER allows junkyards to "numerous, successive, slight modification"
      (DARWIN'S definition of natural selection)

Dawkins face in thumbnail looks utterly void of love. It sends a powerful message to me of the pitfalls of overly concrete/materialistic rational thinking and cynicism. There are also pitfalls to many types of religious thinking of course, such as any aspect that focus on persecution or hate towards others etc. But those concepts that exalt love and hope, a fervent goodwill towards all souls and life / fellow children of a loving Father / God, as axiomatic principles to reality, is an overwhelmingly beautiful worldview that i believe is far superior to any type of propositional standpoint ive ever heard Dawkins put forth. Makes me feel sad wondering what type of meaning he truly derives from devoting his life to the subject matter he does.

A picture is worth a thousand words. And obviously I'm not drawing that conclusion from the thumbnail alone. I've watched tens of hours of his interviews and debates and have always wondered the same thing. He always engages in these shallow debates with this often angry and condescending air about him, rooted in his concrete interpretation. Satisfied with his gotcha moments of setting up a religious person and them failing to provide some type of physical evidence, instead of caring to have a respectful and engaging discussion. I've always gotten the sense from him that he operates solely from the level of the intellect, void of love and care for anything metaphysical. Thus, why majority of his thumbnails perfectly capture that essence.

I was so happy to actually hear Bertha, the leader of TIES. I have been a fan of TIES even though I am not a school teacher. The reason I am such a big fan of ties is because of an incident that happened with my children in a public high school. My children came home from school telling me that their science teacher was telling the class that evolution is wrong and would have been impossible. Of course I complained about it to the school. It is so nice to see a whole organization dedicated to teaching evolution in the public schools, thank you.

Around a thousand years ago Imam Muhammad Al Ghazali told story of a man walking in the jungle. A roaring lion ran towards him and the man ran as fast as he could to escape from it. He noticed a well in front of him and he jumped inside hoping to escape from the lion. As he was falling inside the well, he grabbed onto the rope and saved himself. The man was so relieved but when he looked down he saw a big snake at the bottom of the well. It had its jaws wide open ready to swallow him up. The man then looked up and saw two mice nibbling at the rope. A black mouse and a white were both chewing into the rope. The scary lion was still prowling outside the well. The man's heart was pounding as he wondered how he could escape from this. Then he noticed a honeycomb in front of him which had delicious honey dripping from it. He stuck his finger into the honey and put it inside his mouth. It was delicious and for a moment he forgot about the lion, the snake and the two mice chewing at the rope. Imam Ghazali explained that the lion is like the angel of death which is always looming above us. The snake was like his grave which all humans will face. The black mouse and white mouse were like the day and night which are always nibbling at our life (the rope). The honey was like this dunya (this temporal world) which with its momentary sweetness makes us forget the death and the eternal life.....

Richard Dawkins is a modern hero, however, Bertha Vasquez is the most palatable version of scientific fact. Absolutely no ego, patient, no intolerance, able to talk on a level.
She will be so much more palatable than any of the modern atheists (even though that word is no longer in fashion).
The well spoken upper class English voice, even if it’s correct in the message, isn’t necessarily persuasive in tone.
She will move the scientific viewpoint forward more than Hawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens combined.
