Beard is coming along great Mayor. Great tips. I am defiantly going to get the Aberlite Pro. Just need to wait till my August budget starts. Too many good purchases in July
YUP! I made SO many mistakes the first six months it wasn't funn at all. The bad thing is one mistake would lead to bad advice (or randomness) that lead to another. The biggest things are having great resources and of course support. It is tough dealing with "bad beard" days but the quicker you can learn to deal with those... whether it is by styling technique or just igoring them, the better. I found that is where most of my mistakes were coming from. i think even those big glorious beard guys probably still have more "bad beard" days, at least in their eyes, as anyone else. Even after learning to deal with this, needing to look as good as possible for jobs, events, whatever puts added stress. This is where minor tweaks at most and styling tips come into play, like use of heat. Thanks Mayor for sharing your new journey.
A 5 o'clock shadow is a beard, so u're BEYOND that point. I did my 1st trim after a month of growing, just lining up the cheeks & neck, then went 4 a yeard & never looked back!
Great video Steve!! Perfect video for the newly bearded. I remember the turning point for me is when I made the conscious decision to just stop adjusting and trimming all together. Then I was completely surprised that I could grow a fantastic big beard 💯👊🤘
Cheek lines for me are the toughest. So scary to go too low. I use a straight edge like an aberlite beard shaper, just using the straight edge to protect the bulk of my beard on the cheeks to get the strays. It really helps my confidence when doing cheek lines. Now, I do not shape my cheek line, I leave it natural, I just use the straight edge as a guard so I can get the hairs that do not connect anywhere. Thanks for the video mayor! These are definitely tips I could have used a couple years ago, so anyone just starting out, trust this man!
I did the same thing on the cheek lines and I made them too low and clean-lined. I had to let it grow in and catch back up to the rest of the growth. I also focused on the sideburns and around the chin/neck and trimmed when I should not have. Beard is coming in nice Mayor
My first beard started when I grew a true yeard. I did not trim anything for 12 months. This way I could see what I was capable of growing. If I’d been trimming, I would never know. I recommend NO TRIMMING for a year.
That’s awesome, but most people are only going to need a month to see what they are capable of growing; some people who have slower growth might need two or three months. I dig your spirit, and maybe you needed a year to see what you could grow, but it’s anecdotal and doesn’t apply to most people.
I used to trim my cheek lines and my under beard every so often. I’m a perfectionist, so I would make sure over and over they were even and I ended up having them too short. Now since I found this channel, I haven’t touched my cheeks at all.
As a child from the 70's, I just thought the cheek line was supposed to be low, Kenny Rodgers was my memory... lol I definitely kept mine too low for the first two years, and it was not fun letting it grow out after the rest of the beard was established, I'd do it differently if I start anew...
Just another insight, like a tree, the longer you grow it the bigger the base will get. Gotta let that hair shaft get some girth. I just flat out let my cheek line go for months, best thing I ever did for a higher cheek line.
I'm at the same week as you. I have been training my beard to lay flat. How? Well, I have straight up mustache wax and I apply it to the "soul patch" area only, then use heated brush and comb it throughout the rest on my beard. I find applying just that little amount and spreading it works great and it's not too waxy. I start doing this at week three heading into week four. Just sharing one of my techniques, it's not right or wrong just some insight how it can be done.
How about a DE safety razor instead of a disposable razor? I use an electric trimmer with no guard for my cheeks. I’ve found that a small pair of fingernail scissors works great for trimming stray cheek and mustache hairs as well. The blades are so thin, I can get extremely close without actually shaving.
I'm at about week 4/5 wtih growing my beard out, and by week 3 usually is when I'll trim the neck line and cheek line. My beard tends to grow kinda low on my face and very full on my neck, so if I go too long growing it out, it looks awful and makes my face look pudgier than it really is. So by week 3 I trim the neck, but not too much so I don't over do it, and by week 4 or 5 I go to my barber who I heavily trust and he touches it all up to make everything look even sharper. My beard doesn't grow nearly as fast as yours does, nor as full, so taking the hair off my neck brings more attention to my face, giving a sharper more deliberate look. I just visited my barber yesterday actually and he didn't disappoint. I would post a picture but RUclips doesn't allow posting links apparently.
Hi how are you. So l have full beard and l like to keep it short but its make me itch all the time even if l just take shower also lots of dandruff fall out do you recommend anything for me to stop them and make it feel bit smooth
The short answer is to get a good beard wash, like Beard Octane's Lathering Conditioning wash (3-4 times per week, depending) and a quality beard oil (I like Honest Amish Pure for a go-to, solid, affordable oil) morning and night. The "long answer" is...hang out on Dan's channel and look at all his beard routine videos! He takes it step by step and demonstrates how, and when, to use those products. Search Dan C Bearded routine and you'll have plenty of help to peruse 😀
Yeah, I made the mistake to "adjust" the cheek line. I have spent the last 8 months regrowing the cheek line to where it should have been, and am still not where it should be...
I like Dan C , And iv learned a lot from him....I have Singed my beard quite a few times...And sometimes i have to cut it short to fix it....and some times i get so frustrated and want to give up...But after all iv put my beard through...And no matter how ugly it looks i never gave up...i just cut 3 inches off because of a bomb fire....But its at a length were 3 inches aint nothen....but from experience..I say, Who cares if its ugly...I figure your always going to have ugly stages in your journey....Im to the point were i dont care how ugly it is...im not cutting it off....So i guess what im saying is...Its just 2 years of your life....Go ugly and let it grow
This video speaks volumes. I remember when I used to have the stubble beard, I would go to line up the cheeks, mess up and wind up shaving it all off. I am on week 22 of my yeard and was absolutely hesitant to trim my cheek line. I had my talented barber line the cheeks up for me and it looks great. To maintain those lines I bought the Aberlite ClearShaper. I feel ridiculous using it, but it actually does a fairly decent job as guidance for keeping my cheek lines crisp when I shave. I highly recommend, especially if you have shakey hands like me. 👋
FIRST! My big mistake at this stage was trimming my neckline. I had no idea that, in order to grow a big beard, I had to leave it alone. It will be awkward for a short time, but that will go away quickly. Again, if you want a long beard, leave the neckline ALONE!
@DanCBearded of course I am growing it back . With much learning from the past experiences and mistakes. When do ypu recommend my fist line up ? I didn't shave it smooth I have about a weeks worth of stubble

So cool to have you on with the journey!
Good information for new beard guys, worrying less helps causes fewer mistakes
Sooo true!
Grow. Or do not grow. There is no trim. Great video Steve!

Wash, exfoliate, beard oil, and drink enough water! You got this
Theres a couple areas on my cheeks I'd like to even out but I'll probably end up waiting a couple more weeks.
Wait for sure! you will never regret waiting

do you use balm at this length?
Yes, just not a lot. But u can still go without it at this stage depending on how yo beard is growing
The mayor does not, but you can!

A straight razer makes trimming the cheeks much easier. I bought one and use it now after trimming too much one time.
That’s awesome!
I just cut my beard off today after 2yrs of growth
