Soda and Mentos Experiment

    Copyright infringement in case: I do not own any of the soda companies mentioned in this video or Mentos. Obviously. I think that's it. Where I got the microscope picture and research:www.newscientist.com/article/d...
    Look, this is just meant to be a high school extra credit project, nothing more. So I was a bit more lenient with experimental error. That being said, the main point still gets across, so it really doesn't matter that "the bottles are different sizes" or I "uncapped the bottles too soon" or "accidentally put in 4 mentos instead of 5." Woah, I know I'm such a disgrace to science. That being said, just chill out. I am not the first nor the last person to try this experiment, and my results were congruent with the majority of trials, so any experimental error is irrelevant. Thank you for watching and commenting :) Honestly, the only reason I even put this on youtube in the first place was because I couldn't get it onto a disk...

    She fumbled one Mentos putting it in the coke zero. You can see it during the slo-mo shot near the end. Yet it still was one of the most reactive with only 4 mentos.

      Yes it was the gravity but the only reason the gravity even made it go down was because of the force that shot it up

    • @user-sy4xg1zz8r
      @user-sy4xg1zz8r 9 лет назад

      "The force of the reaction was so strong it knocked down the full cup soda", I think you can word that better.. even if its just The force of the reaction "was strong enough" to knock down the full cup "of" soda.

    • @mozarth
      @mozarth 9 лет назад +4

      Kotonoha Katsura Gravity pulled it down. There're variables such as the stability, surface quality, weight, shape, density. Create the correct conditions, you can knock that cup down by exhaling on it. The force of the liquid is not important. The quantity of the liquid is. Force is determined by the gravity.

  • @MrRahimhosein
    @MrRahimhosein 10 лет назад +55

    Your experiment is flawed and your data is inconclusive. First- you didnt measure the height of the fountain of fluid to gauge which one is the most reactive. The height would tell us which fountain had more force pushing the fluid out of the bottle. Second- not all of the bottles were the same size, changing the force. The force will increase pressure because of the smaller surface area inside. Third- not all of the bottles had the same volume of fluid. Yea you poured equal amount out of the bottle but the capacity of the bottle is not all the same. Fourth- on the Coke Zero you only placed 4 Mentos in the bottle. You dropped one when putting them in. Fifth- you said Mountain Dew was the least reactive of all the sodas, yet we can clearly see orange Crush was the least reactive. We know this because the Crush and Mountain Dew were the same sized bottles. Sixth- the bottles are of different shape. This will affect the way the soda is forced out of the bottle. Changing the restriction on the bottles will affect fluid flow. You sound all scientific and sound like you know what you are doing, but there are way too many variables here. No real scientist could accept this data as valid or conclusive. FAIL.

      +Nadine Plchova. I can agree to the fact it was for fun. But some basic steps should have been taken. It was a real experiment. I was pointing out the discrepancies. You are tight though. It was for fun and a school project so it isn't important they this person can't do a proper experiment. It was for fun as you say.

    1: There is a different amount of liquid in each bottle

    3: The results depend on how old each of the pops are
    4: Also where they were madr

      When I was in HS several decades ago, we had a version of this, but much better. The chemistry teacher had a demonstration once a semester where he would drop a large chunk of elemental sodium into a trashcan of water. This was done out on a practice football field. There was an impressive, explosive reaction.

    Great Job DIY... flaws or not in the "Scientific Research" This was a pretty cool comparison of the various soda types (Saved me several bucks ...), fun and educational at the same time. Yeah maybe in a more lab like setting you could've ironed out some of the details ... but I don't think that was the point, I enjoyed it and think it is cool you took the time and effort to film and post it.

      dx bx 1. It's like you did not hear a damn word she said in that comment. She never intended to be a scientist in any way, smartass.
      2. It's a scientist. Not "an scientist"
      3. The video explicitly said that she dropped one by mistake. So no need to point it out.
      4. Quit trying to make up things to say to her to just end with you carrying it on. It's basically pointless.
      5. It's a school project, not a documentary on the history channel. So screw off.

    She clearly states in her description (guess nobody reads those anymore) that she knows the bottle sizes aren't the same, the mento's didn't all go in some, and that it is a very loose experiment with extremely lax controls but she wants us to remember it was just for high school extra credit. She almost begs people NOT TO GET UPSET over all of the facts that were brought up in the very first post !!! Do any of you read anything before you start typing your hateful, bitchy, and rude comments ? Read the description from now on before you start typing out your hatefulness people. wow, i think she did a great job and i hope she gets the extra credit and then some.

    • @commodoor646
      @commodoor646 8 лет назад

      True but she was referring to this demonstration as a _chemical reaction_ which has to be corrected. It's a _physical reaction_ and that is a pretty major error since it's a basic concept for high school science. At her age and grade they focus on things like physical change versus chemical change. That said, I agree she did a great job. But in science there shouldn't be a fear of engaging in honest critiques. Perpetuating misconceptions is never a good way to go when science is involved.

      At the time, the only videos I saw were strictly "diet coke and mentos" Naturally, I wanted to see if other sodas would work as well and if so, why they were not as commonly used. Honestly, I thought 10 bottles would be a good basis at least and tried to get a variety. I got more variations of coke because as I said, "diet coke" was the most commonly used at the time. Hope that helps! Sorry for the late response
