Copyright infringement in case: I do not own any of the soda companies mentioned in this video or Mentos. Obviously. I think that's it. Where I got the microscope picture and research:www.newscientis...
Look, this is just meant to be a high school extra credit project, nothing more. So I was a bit more lenient with experimental error. That being said, the main point still gets across, so it really doesn't matter that "the bottles are different sizes" or I "uncapped the bottles too soon" or "accidentally put in 4 mentos instead of 5." Woah, I know I'm such a disgrace to science. That being said, just chill out. I am not the first nor the last person to try this experiment, and my results were congruent with the majority of trials, so any experimental error is irrelevant. Thank you for watching and commenting :) Honestly, the only reason I even put this on youtube in the first place was because I couldn't get it onto a disk...
I didn't come for science I just game for the explosion

it is mind blowong that a human being could ever find this funny
She fumbled one Mentos putting it in the coke zero. You can see it during the slo-mo shot near the end. Yet it still was one of the most reactive with only 4 mentos.
But it was a great video kid. I shoulda mentioned that.
Great vid XD
I like how you did this with a bunch of different drinks instead of just diet coke, that was a great idea.
Thank you!
Yeah it was good

I'm a high school math and science teacher, with a daughter named, coincidentally, Eva. ! Seeing another girl a little older than her taking an active interest in research and science is really encouraging "my" Eva. :-) And from the science teacher viewpoint, I particularly appreciated how you used a control, stated your research question, and cited sources. Thank you so much for posting this!!!
+catmeep was your daughter named after Eva "Evita" Peron?
what are you ? fucking gay ?
What kind of teacher RUclips name is "catmeep" hahahaha
Thank you so much! I'm glad I was able to help spark a passion in young minds; that's why I do this :)
Yes, this really helped me do my science fair. Thanks! :D
there are a lot of variable to this
1: There is a different amount of liquid in each bottle
2: You dropped 4 Mentos in Coke Zero
3: The results depend on how old each of the pops are
4: Also where they were madr
GunnerGames she dropped 3 in another one😭
And the soda bottle was contaminated by different cokes each time
GunnerGames yes
Your experiment is flawed and your data is inconclusive. First- you didnt measure the height of the fountain of fluid to gauge which one is the most reactive. The height would tell us which fountain had more force pushing the fluid out of the bottle. Second- not all of the bottles were the same size, changing the force. The force will increase pressure because of the smaller surface area inside. Third- not all of the bottles had the same volume of fluid. Yea you poured equal amount out of the bottle but the capacity of the bottle is not all the same. Fourth- on the Coke Zero you only placed 4 Mentos in the bottle. You dropped one when putting them in. Fifth- you said Mountain Dew was the least reactive of all the sodas, yet we can clearly see orange Crush was the least reactive. We know this because the Crush and Mountain Dew were the same sized bottles. Sixth- the bottles are of different shape. This will affect the way the soda is forced out of the bottle. Changing the restriction on the bottles will affect fluid flow. You sound all scientific and sound like you know what you are doing, but there are way too many variables here. No real scientist could accept this data as valid or conclusive. FAIL.
Oh, shut up!
+Alicia Teele. Your comment is flawed.
RSH21 You sound boring.
I do agree with all those statments but then again this was not a real experiment so getting proper data was not necessary and of course put on the fact that this was just for fun so please don't be a critic
+Nadine Plchova. I can agree to the fact it was for fun. But some basic steps should have been taken. It was a real experiment. I was pointing out the discrepancies. You are tight though. It was for fun and a school project so it isn't important they this person can't do a proper experiment. It was for fun as you say.
It's not the force of reaction knocked down the full cup soda, it was the gravity,
Thank u Mozart.
01merijn My pleasure.
Yes it was the gravity but the only reason the gravity even made it go down was because of the force that shot it up
"The force of the reaction was so strong it knocked down the full cup soda", I think you can word that better.. even if its just The force of the reaction "was strong enough" to knock down the full cup "of" soda.
Kotonoha Katsura Gravity pulled it down. There're variables such as the stability, surface quality, weight, shape, density. Create the correct conditions, you can knock that cup down by exhaling on it. The force of the liquid is not important. The quantity of the liquid is. Force is determined by the gravity.
Guys why are you so rude? She's doing a science experiment. Does it really affect your life that much that she said Orange Soda and not Fanta? Does it matter that much, is it gonna change your life? I didn't think so. And she's not wasting soda if shes using it for a project. Just because some of y'all are to poor to do this doesn't mean you have to hate on her. And with that logic isn't she "wasting" mentos too? Either way it's probably for school so stop criticizing her it won't benefit you in any way all it'll do is hurt her. So stop being rude and get a life cuz if you're on RUclips insulting this girl for no other reason than to be mean then you don't have a life. And for you people who said she's "scared to get wet", would you want to be sprayed with all that sticky sugar soda? I didn't think so. So again, stop being rude for no reason. Thanks

That would've been a really fun school project! It's actually really interesting to see which ones reacted. I assumed the Dr. Pepper would react the most because it seems to have the carbonation. I was quite wrong... and this is probly why I didn't do fantastic in science class lol this was a great idea to do! I hope you got good extra credit for it! :)
When I was in HS several decades ago, we had a version of this, but much better. The chemistry teacher had a demonstration once a semester where he would drop a large chunk of elemental sodium into a trashcan of water. This was done out on a practice football field. There was an impressive, explosive reaction.
Very interesting. I wish back in the day we had projects like this in school. Would have made learning much more fun. Science is about learning. Ignore the people who make irrelevant comments about mistakes, you took the time to acknowledge them. You also did this in your spare time as well. I really enjoyed the new scientist article (thank you for including it), including the section discussing the crushed mentos which was something I was going to ask about.
Well done.
Thank you! I had fun doing it, I love science. There's always new things to discover and if you can't find an answer to your question, do it yourself :) ugh the hate comments are super annoying and they're getting really old really fast :/ thanks for the support though-it means a lot :)
This was really fun to watch. I know it's from 6 years ago, but there's no need to apologize. You did just fine on a *school extra credit project.* Anyone who thought otherwise can kick rocks.

Its orange soda
She clearly states in her description (guess nobody reads those anymore) that she knows the bottle sizes aren't the same, the mento's didn't all go in some, and that it is a very loose experiment with extremely lax controls but she wants us to remember it was just for high school extra credit. She almost begs people NOT TO GET UPSET over all of the facts that were brought up in the very first post !!! Do any of you read anything before you start typing your hateful, bitchy, and rude comments ? Read the description from now on before you start typing out your hatefulness people. wow, i think she did a great job and i hope she gets the extra credit and then some.
True but she was referring to this demonstration as a _chemical reaction_ which has to be corrected. It's a _physical reaction_ and that is a pretty major error since it's a basic concept for high school science. At her age and grade they focus on things like physical change versus chemical change. That said, I agree she did a great job. But in science there shouldn't be a fear of engaging in honest critiques. Perpetuating misconceptions is never a good way to go when science is involved.

Cool experiment👍🏻. I think maybe the bottle shape had something to do with the force of the explosion as well. The coke bottles are more pointy, bullet shaped causing a more strong steam lined geyser.😬

well, having all the bottles opened while one is gushing out contaminates the other bottle and jeoperdises the whole experiment. also the bottles should be full when doing this to get the best reaction.
hmm good tip. Honestly I was only doing this as an extra credit project, so I wasn't trying to create the best soda-mento reaction ever known to man. Haha, I only uploaded it to youtube in the first place because it wouldn't transfer to a disk :)
Great Job DIY... flaws or not in the "Scientific Research" This was a pretty cool comparison of the various soda types (Saved me several bucks ...), fun and educational at the same time. Yeah maybe in a more lab like setting you could've ironed out some of the details ... but I don't think that was the point, I enjoyed it and think it is cool you took the time and effort to film and post it.

What's with the argument over soda vs fanta? It's still orange soda no matter the brand. Secondly, fanta has other flavors than orange.
It's great that you framed the shot to make sure half the screen was filming the space under the table and not the actual soda explosions, great job.

At the time, the only videos I saw were strictly "diet coke and mentos" Naturally, I wanted to see if other sodas would work as well and if so, why they were not as commonly used. Honestly, I thought 10 bottles would be a good basis at least and tried to get a variety. I got more variations of coke because as I said, "diet coke" was the most commonly used at the time. Hope that helps! Sorry for the late response

Hi Eva, I did a similar experiment with Diet Pepsi. I ended up producing almost a 2 foot eruption from the bottle with 5 tablets of Mentos into the bottle (the other 5 bounced off and landed on the grass).
So... not Coke and Mentos, but *Diet* Coke and Mentos?
Yep
She miss one mentos on the diet coke. This experiment is a fail.
Your lack of annotation and description reading is a fail. I have acknowledged that I dropped some of them numerous times. So why don't you check your facts before making a needless comment
This isn't accurate enough. Thanks for being a scientist

dx bx 1. It's like you did not hear a damn word she said in that comment. She never intended to be a scientist in any way, smartass.
2. It's a scientist. Not "an scientist"
3. The video explicitly said that she dropped one by mistake. So no need to point it out.
4. Quit trying to make up things to say to her to just end with you carrying it on. It's basically pointless.
5. It's a school project, not a documentary on the history channel. So screw off.
not bad thank you for writing your errors. a good start. keep studying science we need bright people in the feild to advance us as humanity as a whole. 😊
the reason some of the sodas didn't have as strong as a reaction as usual is just because she opened the bottles and then put the mentos in minutes later. basicly when the bottle is open all of the carbon dioxide is released, so once you put in the mentos, there wont be as big as an explosion because most of the carbon gasses have already been released. the coke and pepsi were more eplosive because there is more carbon dioxide in those drinks than Fanta or mountain dew. if you want a huge explosion, put in the mentos quicker. still great vid though!!!
thanks for the video i know 7 up wasn't the highest but i pick it for my volcano cause that is one
which is most easily available but anyways it was awesome
scientific. especially the way you didn't use the same volume of each soda
She poored out the same amount into the cups in front. Notice the bottles are different shapes and heights. That cherry coke bottle is more than an inch taller than the mountain dew.
@@javaman2883 she should have got 9 bottles that are exactally the same and filled them to the same levels

Oh yeah, also I didn’t expect anybody to actually reply.
There's too many variables in your experiment. The volume of soda in each bottle varies. The delivery system of the Mentos is not constant. The bottles were open prior to the experiment. And if I had to guess the manufacture dates for all the sodas would be varied. When performing science experiments consistency is key, other than that great job. Don't take this as a bad thing just remember, for next time, with less variables the more precise data can be gained.
"Diet Cola Hot Springs: Watch out for falling Mentos." Guess where that came from.
My mom calls it orange soda
Why do you act so scared when it explodes?
Lmaoooooo
0:33 sounds like she's eating one of the mentos
As a physicist, I would say that the weight of the natural sweeteners acted to reduce the apparent effect. Moreover, not all sodas have equal amounts of carbonation -- high carbonation and no sugar should thereby lead to the strongest reactions.
