Cuba looks like such a unique country; you are going back in time there. I've always been interested in trains and i'm researching what areas in the caribbean had railroads in the past and which ones still do.
This is a great high definition video of working steam in in Cuba, but was probably filmed in about 2000. The last working steam locomotives were at the Manalich mill near Havana back in 2007. I went to see working steam there back in '02, '03 and '05 with the UK railway touring company "Steam in paradise", led by the the late Ron Lingley, affectionately known by many Cubans as " el Ron de Cuba" , i.e Bacardi rum. Great days, seems like yesterday and the Cuban people are the salt of the earth. Any steam still running there in 2017 will be ex mill locomotives for tourist excursions and once life expired will almost certainly be dumped or scrapped. No preservation in Cuba.......i.e no money
I have a question, where is that manalich mill located? and are the steam engines (30in and standard gauge) that worked on that mill still around today, or scrapped?
I'm Cuban, and steam locomotives just was replaced for Russian diesel locomotive in sugar mill starting in 1975 in sugar mill from province of ciego de avila to sugar mill in the province of camaguey, all sugar mill of those province were using diesel from 70s till now, only in province of the west side of Cuba the steam locomotive never were replaced for diesel, diesel locomotive like TGM-8K, TGM4K were used since the 70s because the hey were bought to the previous soviet union in those years.
Of all the steam locomotives shown, I love Cai Venezuela #1742. I wonder if she's still around. Does anyone still know? Another Steam loco in Cuba, that I've heard of is Ifrain Alfonso #1910. Does anyone know if she's still around?
If they do replace them and we are open up to trade one day, let us take the steam locos over here! So many places would love to have them for excursions just like they did with the Tangshan Engines
This is all interesting and all but I call BS. The US is the only country that doesn't trade with Cuba. Dont tell me that they haven't modernized beyond the 1950s.
I remember this episode when I was a kid. Never imagined I'd be watching it on a phone while waiting to film a train.
Me too

1910 is still around, but I don't know exactly where she resides.
So that steel mill actually makes steel?
