I've been watching your videos in release order and it's nice seeing your patreon list grow with the passage of time. You definitely deserve it. I wonder what happened with "El queso" though.
Doug and I are now excited. Eataly is coming to San Jose. That’s close enough for us. Thanks for the heads up on this place, Erick. It’s too bad that they took advantage of government fund.
6:22 the Mortadella pronunciation is correct, we have it in Portuguese vocabulary too and it is pronounced the same as in Italian 👍, the same goes for mozzarella.
One good thing about car trips is you can always find a park to grill at. I never do though. Usually just don't stop anywhere on the way for very long.
Love this video. Love the way that you have transported me to another part of the world, another side of reality. Looking forward to the next ride! : )
it looks like a movenpick -- sort of like a theme-park. i bet you could find all kinds of authentic italian places around little italy and up in richmond hill that need and deserve the money more!
It's funny, I've lived in Las Vegas for four years now and your videos are showing me stuff I never knew about, mainly because I purposefully avoided The Strip. When things return to normal I'm definitely going to check out that part of the city.
Thanks for the tour of the Las Vegas Eataly location. I remember visiting the one in Chicago, and liking it. I really hope Eataly paid back the Paycheck Protection Program money, since I'm not sure I could return if I don't hear confirmation they returned the money they shouldn't have gotten from that program! And I agree that money should've strictly went to small businesses, and not big chains like Eataly. One small thing I noticed, is that this location still has a Nutella bar area. The Eataly in Chicago got rid of that, once Nutella Cafe in Chicago opened up. :( Not sure why, but after visiting Nutella Cafe, I weirdly prefer the Nutella bar that used to be inside Eataly myself. And I always really liked the pizza bread area that Eataly has, myself! Their pastry area is pretty good, too. Like you and others said, going there isn't cheap, and it's definitely pricey. But it's fun to browse. And damn, it looks like after I did some googling, they still have yet to return their PPP money, unlike Shake Shack, Ruth's Chris, and Potbelly among the companies I remember that returned such money. Also per this article, they were trying to pressure certain employees to resign, meaning they wouldn't be able to get unemployment benefits: headtopics.com/us/eataly-s-workers-say-they-feel-betrayed-by-a-new-payment-plan-13018031

Hey! Great video! The food had me drooling in my mouth! As for their decision to money grab, it sucks that every company out there is trying to classify themselves as a small business or essential, but it doesn’t surprise me that they do this. In times of better economic stability, these companies would still be trying to put others out of business in order to thrive in what was in already uncertain economic climate where it’s hard to make it. But now, with all of the shut downs and the “get it before it’s gone “, “every man for himself “mentality that these companies are facing with the government‘s response to Covid, it’s the same idea of thriving by doing what it takes to climb up the top, only now, the stakes are raised because it’s about survival. Even if you’re bigger than a small business, you still might not survive this thing, especially if your goods are luxury and higher quality/higher price, like Eataly‘s are. I’m not saying it’s right, but it makes sense.
Interesting video. The only time I came across Eataly was when I visited Expo 2015 in Milan where they operated multiple self-service restaurants. Apparently they haven't expanded to my country yet.
If I am not mistaken I went and ate at the one in NYC in the Freedom Tower. This was back in fall of 2018. I even think my cousin who lives in NYC said she helped design one of the locations in NYC. She is an architect. I liked it, but it was super busy. It was actually a day of two before Thanksgiving. So you had all the people there for the Macy’s Day Parade.
Thank you for the video! I love watching your efforts to document retail! Unfortunately I think this kind of unethical behavior is common. Sure, some companies give the money back when they're called out on it, but only if they get bad press. Sometimes I think that it gets kind of exhausting having to call out companies all the time for doing things that are messed up. Every time you turn around it seems like someone is burning down a forest for profit or not paying their employees. I think we do both, we can run companies and make good, ethical decisions. But it doesn't seem to be the American way right now...
While the stores are significantly smaller, there is a chain of Italian grocery stores/cafes in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that are broadly similar. They stock many specialty items not available elsewhere. There is a single Canadian Eataly location in Downtown Toronto.
From what I understand, some of those employees don’t work directly for Eataly but work for restaurant companies who then assign them to those various sections inside the Eataly complex. Still, the paycheck protection program was designed for small local businesses and Eataly doesn’t pass the smell test for small and local. Will I go back to the Chicago one? Probably, I can’t draw a line in the sand for everything that makes me angry. But, it’ll be awhile anyway, they’re not cheap and I don’t think I’d enjoy it with all the social distancing rules
I have been to the one in Toronto and it felt like one endless deli/bakery section at a super market. It was really busy and I felt like I had to be constantly moving. It wasn't always clear where to pay for things.
The argument Shake Shack claimed that each _franchise_ was a "small business" under the PPP. Sort of how many McDonald's are not "company owned" stores (though more than a few actually are). The ones that got me were things like Harvard, Princeton, (yeah the Ivy league schools) the LA Lakers (wat?), and Ruth's Chris Steak House (one word - pricey).
I ate here during an event I was working in Vegas last year. As a self-employed events-worker now completely unemployed for the foreseeable future, I likely won't be returning to Eataly knowing that they've essentially taken money out of my pocket and the pockets of those like me who really needed the cash.
I don't understand the location of this place and I honestly don't see it surviving unless they get rid of their grocery market. It's in the middle of the strip and like you said in the video who would want to buy those steaks if they are staying at the hotel? Locals aren't going there because it's too far and expensive than just going to Walmart.
Reminds me of some places I visited while in Catalonia Spain, especially the meat area. Makes me wish I also visited Italy while in Europe. Nevertheless , Eataly looks like it has a lot of delicious stuff, especially the pizza bread!
I live within walking distance of the Canada location and I have to say I really did not grasp the concept and it was nowhere near as nice or grand as the one shown here. Also had almost no pastries!
For 40,000 sq feet why would it be all about Italy? They should be worlds fair of cuisine from all over the world. Sauce cheese, bread and pasta in different forms you can only have so much before you get tired of it
Great video, Erik. I’ve been to Vegas 7 times since 2007 and I didn’t know about probably 75% of the things you’ve shown. Regarding the loan; it wouldn’t surprise me if each Eataly location registered each of the booths as a separate business as a sort of loophole. Back when our provincial government first started loosening the Sunday shopping restrictions (about 20 years ago), they said any business under X amount of square feet of total retail space was allowed to open. All the grocery stores (and maybe the department stores too) registered each of their departments as a separate business to get around the square footage rule.
It’s okay. I wasn’t too impressed with it especially the prices. I stayed at park mgm for three days which also was a disappointment and took shortcuts through eataly just to get outside. This place wasn’t full of folks like on your video.
PPP wasn't loans. It was free money. "Government offers your competition free money." You find a way to take some too. Big businesses are no less vulnerable than small ones. Cash flow? You mean.. the thing government destroyed? They didn't say "giant mountain of cash reserves" they said "cash flow."
NOOOOOOO I live in chicago and hit up eataly all the time.. now i definitely couldn't go back in good conscience. What a bummer. It is interesting how similar the locations are from place to place though; they have the same gold pizza ovens, desserts, nutella jars, and all the same stalls in the Chicago location as well.
And those four are the dry aged? Shop in Boston has a whole case full of meat aging. I'm thinking the Vegas store cut down on the spoilables. Like you pointed out... at the Park MGM, they're just getting tourists with no ability for real shopping. Boston store is oddly located, but within scope of a lot of residential foot and commercial "yeah, I'll take it home after work".
Selective hearing & sight at its finest. The U.S. government says 'Free Money', and that's all they see & hear. I hope they give the money back as well. Thanks for posting though, this is the kind of place I could definitely get fat & happy! And very broke...
Yes, it's a shame that big business were taking the loans left and right. That is the corporate heads though, the workers unfortunately are the majority that suffer from the stupid decisions of the minority. Just like us all in general, the majority suffer for the idiocy of a very small group.
Sucks that Eataly showed a very unethical side, because looking at this video, their food looks really good. My husband was looking over my shoulder as I was watching this and his eyes widened at all those steaks, (he loves steak). Wonderful video and I hope Eataly does the right thing and give back the loan.
Eataly literally stole money from a small business fund they knew they weren't qualified for. Many other large companies did this causing the funds to be depleted before actual small businesses could get the funds they needed to survive. This all had nothing to do with Trump. Trump sucks but so do companies like Eataly for doing this.
So you are basically advertising for a company that stole money from other "small business's" ? Nice of you to put that bit at the end instead of the start. I would have watched something else if I had known that.
I'm glad you call out when places are unethical/abuse employees. It's important to hold them to a standard and keep informed.

The issue for locals patronizing this place is the location. A local would have to pay for parking.
