- "The Funk Phenomena" is a single from Armand Van Helden's debut studio album Old School Junkies: The Album (1996). The song uses samples from "How High" by Method Man & Redman, "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)" by Creative Source and "Don't Throw My Love Around", by Cooly's Hot Box.
Armand van Helden (born February 16, 1970) is an American DJ and producer of electro house music from Boston, Massachusetts. He was one of the main proponents of the genre Speed Garage, remixing various artists such as Janet Jackson, Juliet Roberts, KRS-One, and Sneaker Pimps among others with this musical style. He is closely linked to the electronic music scene of New York.
Van Helden often remixes and uses samples of funk, soul, rhythm, blues and rap. He also uses filters and dub progressions, as in NYC beat, dancehall and reggae samples.

It was 1998, I was in grade 4. I had a soccer match and one of my sister's students (my sister was an English literature teacher teaching college students) drove me to the game. I got in his car and he was playing this song. I remember everything so vividly. I remember falling in love with this song and thinking this college kid was so damn cool for listening to this song. At the time, I didn't know the name of the song. All I remember was the lyrics. Luckily I'm 37 now and with the only lyrics I remember, I was able to find this song. lol

The 90's were pretty dope but it was the late 90's into the early 2000's where the club scene was really on fire. Anyone who was clubbing from 98-2001 knows what I'm talking about. Just go back and listen the BBC Essential Mixes from that period. You had guys like Chicane and Tiesto trying to keep up with Digweed, Sasha and Oakenfold. It was a pretty great time for music and I'm sure everyone could say the same about a time that is dear to them from their early years. Shout out to all those Pink Floyd and The Who fans. :)

I have the weirdest story about this song. Like mid '90s we were having a little house party on the second floor with some party favors that were popular at the time. Well across the way, these people were too except they played this song continuously for five hours straight. I'm not even kidding when I say it was five hours or maybe longer.
We tried to close the windows, blast our music, and anything else possible but none of us could drown the sound out. We even yelled out of the window. Someone from our party went over there and asked them to please change the music and they threatened us. 😳
