That has to be one of the easiest to watch scrap lead melting videos...so smooth. Thanks for making it!
thanks man!
Very nice! I never thought about using the Harbor Freight weed burner. I don't have a garage and only have an 8'x8' shed, so I have to really think about what all "toys" I want to buy. This set up will take up a lot less space than a turkey fryer and might even motivate me to clean up the sidewalks on my block.
that torch is pretty great, sometimes I use it to start the charcoal too--works great for that.
I loved the camera angles and editing in this one! Nicely done.
thanks man! Gotta give Johnny something to watch when he's not making his own!
Love both of y'alls videos. I wish yall could do a collaboration video.
Keep up the good fight fellas
Would be fun! Thanks for watching man!
Be interested in seeing how you turn this lead into your preferred bullet alloy. Thanks man, keep it up.
Hugh Jaynus my preferred alloy depends on caliber/cartridge and purpose of the load. I love shooting subsonic ammo with suppressors--when I do that, the bullet alloy can be mixed a little softer. Higher pressures and velocities usually require my harder mix. I've been trying to remember to say what alloy mix I use for the different bullets when I make the videos.
Well done! I make and sell tons of lead buckshot and slugs. I pick through and select the best scrap plumbing and roofing lead from local recyclers for $1 per pound. I just got 290lb of ingot from a 300lb purchase last night. I used to use all Lyman and Lee molds, and I'd stack my ingot in perfect straight rows for use. Then I discovered the cornbread ear shaped molds and have never looked back. The ingots weigh about a pound each. I throw them in 5 gal buckets and use as needed. They melt quickly, and you can stand one on end in a Lee production pot and it touches the bottom without letting go, causing a splash like I frequently got with Lyman and Lee ingot. I do everything indoors on an electric cooktop with monster ventilation. I average between three and four hundred pounds per week.
That's awesome!
I got a bunch of wheel weights from a guy that has a tire shop for 40 years have been making # 8 bird shot with it
I am ready to pull the trigger on casting and have been watching your videos plus many others. I have everything I need to get started and will do so as soon as the rain stops. You have a very good stock pile of ingots for the future. I'm 74 so don't need quite that much to last me. Good job on your prep videos. They are very helpful.
Thanks! And let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your video.
you are welcome! thanks for watching
Most we have done in one sitting was 9, 5 gallon buckets of wheel weights. It was all day and the driveway was covered in ingots.
IWatchedWhat ha ha, dang man! That's a ton!
Full.Lead.Taco yea, it was a metric butload for sure. Sad part is I went through my share in just a year.
shooting them in competition or just shooting lots of bullets?
Full.Lead.Taco a little of both, lots in IHMSA and lots just for fun, did a bunch for BPCR and the 45-70 eats lots of lead. I ended up with 1/4 of that session not sure how much it was, but made my car squat when I left for the house. It was almost two buckets of ingots.
IWatchedWhat that sounds awesome... Anytime you can weigh down your car with bullets or future bullets, that's good news
Beautiful beautiful ingots 👍👍👏👏🇺🇸🤓
ha ha, thanks man!
That's a lot of lead! Probably my total supply lol. One of these days I am going to get my torch setup in the same fashion, but for now I use wood and fire pit to melt mine (it's free :)
ahhh, you will want to participate in my next "Taco Challenge" then! I hope to have a video uploaded in the next week or two with the details!
Nice! You have perfected both casting and shooting videos, Taco!
Lol thanks man!
This video is amazing! My question is where do you get so much scrap lead?
Always looking for extra lead, and spread the word that I'm looking for lead. You'd be surprised how many people come to me when they find lead since I'm always putting the word out that I'm looking for it.
Nice job! I have the same “sausage” cooker mold. When I got it they said it was for making bread sticks. Haha, who knows, but it makes great ingots.👍🏻
lol I know, right?
Good job but Just an advice Always wear a Mask FFA2P3 when you melt lead and wear Also protective glasses gloves and a protection suit that Is useful to protect you from lead particles.
if the stuff I am using is really dusty, I will use a respirator... or if the smoke is really bad too. But, just melting lead doesn't produce lead "vapor" or anything like that. I get my blood lead levels checked each year at my annual physical and they always come back normal.
The most ingots I made at one sitting was 186 lbs. Now I buy lead in ingot form . They average 4 to 5 lbs each but will fit in the 20 lb. pot . OK . Imagine a soda can mold filled 1/2 full . It saves a lot in time and propane .
yeah, and you get yours at a great price already in ingot form so it makes sense.
I need to scrounge the scrap yards for some steel plate and pipe . I'd like to have a bullet trap like Charlie made .
yeah that lead collector of his is pretty sweet! I have a mini version of what he threw together.
Did you make it or is it the one from Ebay ?
ebay
Impressive.
thanks
great vid Taco, thanks so much !
Thanks for watchin' Joe!
Good video man, Just learning to mest my Range scrap!
sorry for the late response, but thanks. How did your range scrap go?
I wish i could find a stained glass shop near me, all i find are wheel weights and even then half are useable and the rest is scrap.
yeah man, just put out the word that you use scrap lead--sometimes it just turns up for free!
Full.Lead.Taco have you tried your MOAB mould? I casted a few but only loaded up 20 with trailboss
great stuff, thanks for sharing
thanks, and no prob!
how do you check the BHN, and do you have to mix your ingots with antimony or tin to make them harder?
I have the lee hardness tester that I use in combination with the TRN microscope stand for it. to make my alloy the right hardness, I mix some of my really hard printing press lead ingots into the pot with softer ingots to get the alloy that I want.
It's 2020 and where I'm at no scrap or wheel weights are available, claim that they have to sgip the weights back to some where and it will be recyled ?
You can always buy it online, but local saves on shipping. You can also check with a recycler, a lot of times they will sell scrap lead.
Always use a big BOX FAN nearby
I don't use fans when I am doing it outdoors.
Nice work!
thanks man!
WOW that's a lot
ha ha, yeah, now I just gotta get those other 3 buckets done sometime!
For every pound of pure lead what do you add to bring up your bhn?
This might help ruclips.net/video/aNtzn1V_5Og/видео.html
Hey Taco, is the window lead from a Lead Glass window repair place ? Will have to check that out.
The most so far is 125 lbs. It was a " roll " of lead used at some type of medical facility, I bought two of them from a recycle place and then cut both in 1/4's, they were about four feet tall each before the cutting. I love this place, they give me more per pound for the brass i don't shoot than I pay per lb for the lead I buy, it's like getting free lead. Win-Win :-)
Nice to see a vid again, where ya been ?
yes, the window is from a stained glass window shop--they also do normal glass repairs and such. Nice when you got people who will work with you on the lead. As far as where I've been? Man, I've been all over the last month and a half. Zions National Park, Boulder Mountain area, WA state, Vegas, etc... I will try to post a status update video sometime in the next week or so with a few cool pix and such.
Washington ! Would have loved to have gotten together talked guns and had lunch. Live in Gig Harbor about an hour south of Seattle. Was the lead hard to get from the glass shop ?
I have a friend who lives at the glass shop, so he calls or texts me when they get enough to make it worth a stop by. I think they use that money for their work pizza fund or something, ha ha! Yeah, I'm originally from south eastern washington by all the farms and such.
@@FullLeadTaco what part of South east Washington? Wondering cause I live in that area.
@@yolo-qr2fq Tri-Cities area
Bro, do you sell your ingots, I make fishing jigs and maybe we can make a trade. Let me know, great video
Just melted my first pot of mixed scrap lead (from a recycler) on Friday. Fluxed and cleaned it and cast 24 ingots, ~55 lbs. Where do you find so much lead? Where do you get the leaded window lead? Excellent video... 👍🏼
I always put the word out to all my friends, coworkers, family, extended family etc... that I'm looking for lead. A lot of times, they will actually find it for me and give me heads up on the lead. Sometimes it's free, sometimes I pay--but ALL THE TIME, it is worth the effort.
I'm just getting ready to start processing lead and would like to know if there is something that can be applied to keep the ingots from oxidizing. I was given several dozen very old ingots that were stored in a shed and are nasty as heck. I'd like to recast them into a more manageable size as they are ~80lbs each and then spray something on them to keep them from getting nasty again. Thank you for any advice.
sorry for the late response, but keeping moisture off of them is the biggest factor. Even just getting 5 gallon buckets with lids will do wonders
@@FullLeadTaco Thank you! I did recast a half dozen of them into 5lb ingots and am storing them in dry environment. I must have lost 2-3lb per ingot in oxidized crap so I will be sure to keep these nice and dry.
@@joem7572 sometimes with the oxidized lead, you can get some of that back with several fluxings--also be careful of that dusty oxidized lead--breathing it can be bad.
Olá amigo, sou do Brazil, você tem como me enviar esse chumbo de sucata
Where did you find the scrap stained glass lead. How does anyone find this
there is a stained glass window shop near where I live. I get it from there.
What does the fluxing do?
I usually point people to this article which is well-written and explains fluxing:
www.lasc.us/FryxellFluxing.htm
You seem to get a lot of stained glass scrap. Where do you even look for that?
There are glass/window shops near where I live that specialize in making stained glass windows for churches and buildings.
@@FullLeadTaco Did you just call and ask them for it, or did you do business prior?
It feels weird to just walk up to a place and ask for their lead without doing business with them.
@@darkspire91 I have a friend who works there. But offer to buy it from them or buy them some pizzas or something.
Nice it’s a shame I can’t do the same I have to buy my lead because I can’t get lead in my state
California?
lol close Connecticut
ahhh yes, my sister used to live in Connecticut
About 400 pounds is the max i have done at one time. Great video Taco
Killing Time 400 lbs is quite a bit of lead!
All I see is shooting for weeks!!! Nice haul. Is it all pure, or is there anything else in it like tin or antimony?
both alloys are very soft and close to pure, but still have a little bit of tin and antimony in them.
in one sitting 5 100# buckets of range lead once the jackets and un-meltable grey powder skimmed off net lead 425# , 20# rowell ladel got a work out that day
ha ha, that's a lot of work man! gets tiring after a while.
Full.Lead.Taco ; yeah it was but well worth it , it was the last smelt of 1200# i traded to somebody to order me a dillon 650 from the factory setup in 45acp large prime
oh nice, how you liking that dillon 650?
Full.Lead.Taco i've put a few upgrades on it such as missed primer catcher, spent primer catcher, shell plate bearings, roller bearing case feed rod. runs pretty sweet with these small upgrades, i use t for 45acp, 45colt, 223, will have 300blackout soon as well. also ive got 2 of the dillon square deal b's to back it up on 9mm and 38spl
Full.Lead.Taco by the way, you do know x-ray foils and stained glass lead are both pure you could have done them together right.
Isn’t it dangerous to inhale it?
Inhale what?
How much do you make off of that??
I shoot it all.
Why are you setting up over a drain?????? Not afraid of contamination?
Nope. That drain is just a storm drain in case it rains a bunch. if lead falls on the drain, it's the same as if it falls on the dirt, I just pick it up later and melt it down again.
Lot of hot and sweaty work just to have a little fun 😁
oh yeah!
The problem that I have is that the lead is already spoken for
yeah, spread the word with family and friends and coworkers, etc... sometimes you'd be surprised what people find for you.
100lbs of range scrap is my biggest day so far.
Nice, 100lbs makes a lot of bullets
@@FullLeadTaco yes sir
What do you do with the ingots? Sell or stock pile??
I use it for the most part. I make some pretty large bullets.
Gudday, I dive for my lead and have just started turning all of my finds into ingots. There is a endless supply in the ocean at popular fishing spots and I usually walk away with 6/8 kg per dive plus other treasures, ie gold silver and lost coin. I have almost got over the years 1.5t from 2 different places and was scrapping it out and made enough to buy all of my dive gear and detectors etc.
Making up my own moulds atm 2kg each, tried a plaster mould which was Ok for a couple of runs but soon deteriorated badly.
Check out my vids.
Cheers and Happy Melting
Brad
That's awesome. Probably great to get those lead weights out of the waters and cleaned up and reused for stuff.
That’s about 3000 MOABs! That’s most excellent my friend. 😉🖖🏼
yeah man, and I have another scrap lead haul that I need to process when it gets a little warmer.
What was that powder?
The sawdust for fluxing?
Are you planning to make a video of brass scrap melting?
@@rakshitbabaria8826 that might be cool. I've been saving up my brass for a while (all the non reloadable stuff)
Only about 80 lb that's the biggest I've done
what kind of scrap was it?
@@FullLeadTaco I had wheel weights and Lead drain pipe and stained glass window lead and I kept it all separate when I made the ingots I'm hoping to use the LED to pipe and stained glass window lead for muzzleloader bullets
Mormon! I spot a Mormon #10 can!
ha ha, gotta rotate that food storage!
How do you acquire the dental lead
talk to all the dentists you know. Some of the older ones may still have some--but all the modern dental x-ray equipment is digital.
how to get rid of SB drivers using what you have, thank you
Big show-off, you know us old guys cannot work that fast !! LOL I liked that new type NOE ingot mold.
fuzztfork8 ha ha, that 4 pounder is pretty nice
