- On Wednesday afternoon Xiao Qi Ji appeared displeased with his selection of bamboo. Keep in mind the keepers give him multiple varieties of bamboo, as well supplemental treats. But sometimes a bear doesn't like their selection (even if they were his absolute favorites yesterday!) So rather than sit and eat boo, Qi Ji took multiple dips in his pools, sat in the water bowls at the top of the rockwork, played with his bamboo and the broken pvc pipe donut, as well as wall walked and anointed. Some of the behaviors he displayed (the somersault up by the water bowl atop room 3's rockwork and his upside down dismount from room 3's rockwork) are behaviors he's displayed for many, many months, and are a type of anticipatory behavior. ("The ability to predict regular events can be adaptive for nonhuman animals living in an otherwise unpredictable environment. Animals may exhibit behavioral changes preceding a predictable event; such changes reflect anticipatory behavior.")
Earlier yesterday I had wanted to find some "old" footage showing Qi Ji using his enrichment item as a step up to the window in the door ... and voila! Qi Ji did that behavior during this "teenage tantrum" (although adults also display displeasure when they don't like their selection of bamboo, but they usually aren't as physically demonstrative as our youngster Qi Ji!) He really is quite smart, as well as totally spoiled!

I can learn a thing or two from our Qi Ji on how to cope with frustration and remain utterly delightful. So spoiled but lovable, our boy just unleashed his greatest hits that have brought us joy since he flipped and tumbled into our lives. Our Qi Ji’s now the size of his parents and has picked up some new behavior. Yet he hasn’t shed the playful heart of a cub that has melted ours many times over.

I wonder how the anticipatory behavior shown in captivity is displayed in their wild, vast natural habitat. I can imagine that must be hilarious to see them going "berserk". Thank you. ❤❤❤
Too smart! Right off the bat he’s using the hockey puck to stand taller at the door. Totally not by accident. 🎓
Absolutely no accident! I've seen him carry/push enrichment to the door so that he could (try) to stand on it. He hasn't quite figured out that round(ish) enrichment items do not make for a good step stool!

He is indeed spoiled and smart. He is also very funny and a loveable goofball. The whole while I was watching this I was wishing Joan were still commenting about Our Little Miracles thoughts. He has been doing many of these behaviors for quite some time now. At least I am not concerned He might hurt himself any longer. He is quite adept. Thanks Doxie Mom. My goodness!! What a rambunctious bear 🐼🐼! I couldn’t help but think about Ji standing on Mei’s back to look through the window in the door. When he is wall walking, you can really see how big he has gotten. And finally at the end he’s down for a nap 💤. I needed a nap after watching him 😂!!🐼🐼💦💦💦💜💜💤
Great video! I really hope Qi Ji has a pool in China. I haven't seen one in Bei Bei's home, but it could be out of viewing. Bao Bao has a creek, so maybe something. Our sweet boy has been so spoiled with multiple here and is truly a water panda! 💧💦 🐼♥️
He definitely went after that bamboo today. He must have had some sugar cane, as it tends to hype him up. Of course he could just be putting on a show for his adoring fans! 🎉

No, it is a discoloration of his fur. All adult and subadult pandas have discoloration on their backs to some different degree based on where they rest or recline. I suspect, but it's just a guess, is this patch on QJ is from sap from the evergreen where he loves to nap ... still.

This was a great video of our miracle panda. He will always be a "cubbie" to me 🥰. He was one busy boy and seemed to be having lots of fun! His behavior (the somersault up by the water bowl atop room 3's rockwork and his upside down dismount from room 3's rockwork) is something he's been doing since he was old enough to climb up to the top of that area. I was always holding my breath when he was so small thinking he would fall off the top, or hurt himself when he flipped upside down, but he's here today safe and sound 😊. QiJi is loving all his pools and getting having the best experiences.
