You know what makes the theme work in my opinion? You see when it kicked in with "Not what... who". All of us knew it was Johnny Cage but when he turned away, and they zoomed in on the picture and the theme kicked in...
It basically took us back to our childhood. I mean, the movie was new, we all knew it was going to be different, but we never did recover from how Cage died so early in Part 2... we were really hurt about it. So like the "original" theme kicking in, seeing Johnny Cage and knowing that we just had a successful movie that pretty much means more is coming, just pretty much made us appreciate the modified version.

This one hits hard but I agree with you. But I also believe that we are biased to the original version, if you are like me, and were alive and bought it back then and listened to it over and over for 20+ years and we only have this version to listen to for a year and a half. Nothing beats the "MORTAL KOMBAT!" shout in the original. This opinion comes from a daily dosage of Mortal Kombat 1 stand up(and eventually 2 as well. Beating Goro and Shang Tsung is one thing but how do fare against a charging Shao Kahn without crouching in the corner? or pulling off a toasty bonus!) in Safeway and me turning in a 10$ bill for a roll of quarters to own anybody who trespassed onto the second player stick. It was my parents best and least expensive way to keep me occupied and not bothering them for over an hour in my teens.
