Looks like a great way to hot-mod a JCM without butchering it !. If you have a JCM with an Effects Loop, you can also get similar great results by inserting tube rackmount (or pedal) pre-amp....and maybe you already have one laying around !. My favorite is the Tube Works Blue Tube 905 12AX7 rackmount unit. You have front panel control of the BIAS and CONTOUR of the tube, 3 band EQ, and gain and master volume controls. Your amp will immediately have more tube tone complexity, (and more gain if you want), and can be used to EQ your amp to any frequency profile you like...Diesel, Mesa, Friedman, Fender, Vox. Other great candidates for this "Mod In A Box" include any of the other 1990s Tube Works rackmount and pedal tube preamps like the Tube Driver, RealTube, SmoothTube, and Shred. Of course their predecessor the Chandler Tube Driver is great. Also the rackmount Jackson JX-3 and Peavey Rockmaster. and the Dean Markley Overlord pedal (made by Tube Works). This method avoids the clipping diodes when you add gain into the front end of the amp...and becomes a "Tube Mod In A Box'...you can add gain and EQ...but can clean up the amp from 20 feet away with your guitar volume and pickup selection.

Amazing! Going to get one soon! I can say that one really underrated aspect of the plug in is the low LOW noise floor (I have the Hot Mod EVOv2 in my 1979 JMP 2203). I gotta admit, stock it sounds pretty damn good. Better than any JCM 800 I ever plugged into at a rehearsal studio. I don't hear the drawbacks you're saying it has, just a little less gain and presence.
I understand the confusion. Yes the core tone is tasty, as Pete said a couple of times, the magic is primarily in the 'articulation' element. You're looking for a healthy compression that compliments the initial pick attack at a low pre amp stage (we're talking between 3 and 4). and that's generally really difficult to achieve on stock 2203's. (To get the stock JCM to sound good Pete used a lot of hi pre amp examples, which is what a lot of people do to try and get good tone, for softer rock it works wel but it really doesn't give the responsive articulation qualities desired for hard rock.
My yellow Boss OD always made my 50 watt lethal. I imagine this would only make it crazier but honestly I don't think I need it. But it is cool nonetheless.

Big fan of this. I have one from (I think) the first run w/George’s autograph. I like it all the way up with a 12au7 and a 12at7 (Marshall gain on 10)…..or with a 12ax7 and at7 Vmod gain on 5, Marshall preamp on 10. Almost perfect. Vmod bass switch always off. Killer riffage, Pete 🤘🏼
Got a Hot Mod V2 that I use with my Marshalls. It sounds cool, but I found myself installing and uninstalling it all the time - because with the mod installed, good low gain tones are hard to dial in, especially on my Plexi. I wish it had a master on/off (this version seems to pretty much solve this with its gain control). End of the day - I find it easier to boost with pedals in front, and to my ears it gets me to the same place...
Was thinking the same thing. Maybe if you swapped out the 12ax7 tube & put in a lower gain value tube like a 5751 or a 12AY7 that might help smooth things out 👍. I have a stock SLO 30 but am on the fence whether I should get this. Sounds good though!
I did a few gigs with him a couple of years ago.. He used a Freidman. . One of the BEST Git sounds I have ever heard. Had Bottom but didnt mess with my bass. Had TOP but it wasn't harsh.. It moved air and it wasn't boomy.. And Im a bass player
I have the original V2 Hot mod in my Marshall SV20h. Vast improvement, no OD pedal needed now. George's tone on Kiss of Death is the ultimate hotrodded Marshall tone imo, still chasing it.
GL is an awesome dude and that sounds killer. But that base tone did have a bit of Slash in there... Perhaps an EQ to boost that signal a tad and roll off a touch of the lows?
Love it brother. I mentioned before, I switched from driving the front of my jmp2204 from 77 with my od1 to the hot mod evo 2. I wanted a front end direct plug thing minus my wah. Love it
Awesome vid, sounds ridiculous good Pete. Nice to hear with a marshall and you playing. I have one with the reverse wire put in the V3 slot in my friedman runt 50. Friedman amps are great to begin with. With the mod it just the icing on the cake and rolled back cleans up perfectly. Shout out to Dave and George killer deadly combo of tone magic.
Appreciate that and thank you! The Friedman Runt 50 is my amp of choice (great value for the $$ as well) and one I want to do some demos with as well. Such a great tone with Dave Friedman’s amps and the mod has been super popular in both the Runt 20 and 50.
I always added my big box Rat (now MIA) in front of my 82 50 watt JCM800...Sold it because the original half-stack with 265 watt cab never had the BALLS the JMPs had... On a side note when I saw George with Dokken open for Dio on the Last in Line tour in 84, he was using Randall amps in his touring rig...KILLER arena rock tones 🤟
More than anything, I feel like the mod adds compression. Also, it probably interacts with the tone controls and gain structure a little differently... so salt to taste. 😊 For sure, it makes the guitar easier to play, and you feel freer and more relaxed in the performance. At least, this is what I observed. Thanks again, Pete!
I sang for a bar-band as a senior in high school during the summer/fall of 1987 & the guitar player had a JCM 800 he ran one of those red 9-series Ibanez compressors into. I thought he nailed Lynche’s tone back then.
How about the JCM 900 SLX ? It is basically an 800 with an extra 12AX7 tube. 4 preamp tubes from the factory. Love my 50 watter. Give one a rip. No clipping diodes in the circuit.
The only issue with the SLX is the Bridge rectifier BR3. It’s underpowered and often fails so needs to be/should be upgraded (with or without the mod). After that, the mod can be useful, especially since the SLX is a bit heavy on the lows - so you can turn down the preamp there and tighten things up and then reinsert the extra gain using the mod at a later section at the tone stack right before the phase inverter.
GREAT sounding mod! Lynch, Di Martini and Jake E Lee were the 80's cock rock elite, in the tier JUST below Eddie and Randy and Malmsteen. I guess you can put Vai in there too, but he's not as savage or sleazy as any of those other guys. A bit too nerdy and clean for me. This is all extremely subjective of course! 😁 To people unfamiliar with this part of music history or interest in rock music, those guys would probably all sound pretty much the same.
@@sahlomonic All I can say is you'd have to try it. You can tailor the gain to your requirement and the bass boost is great for messing around at home. I mainly bought it to use in my smallbox, but it's great in any amp it will work with.
"In My Dreams" Dokken 1986 George Lynch Guitar Solo of the year from Guitar Player Magazine . Had a copy lost it through the years of booze , Girls and other Thang's LOL ! Lynch & DeMartini are who Influenced me the most after 1984 before it was EVH & the Amazing Randy Rhodes !! EVH , Lynch & RR were always in constant competition in the Late 70's then with the 80's Metal scene exploding we had a whole New Class of Guys to learn from ! Vai , Malmsteen , Satch , P. Collen , V. Campbell , Jake E. Lee , Mick Mars , Impellitteri & I could keep going its was a Decade of Magic and the Best Guitarist to ever make Metal Music in our Past , Present or Future !! I was young and lived it cannot find words to describe how Fun and Fantastic it was !!!
Idk if it’s just me, but I kinda like the chunky flub of the stock JCM 800. To me that’s always been a part of the JCM800 Marshall metal sound. I really like to blend that boosted with a tube screamer (doing the mark tremonti/MAB setup) blended with channel 2 on a diezel VH4. All this via plugins of course, if I had that money college tuition would be a very different story😂
Always the best overall player video and reviews; THIS one video really walked a "rock" player through the usefulness of the Mr. Scary. The other videos I found really gave me a METAL viewpoint, that's fine but that's not my thing either and as a long time owner/player of vintage Marshall's what does the Legendary Tone setups do for me?! Of course I had to come to Pete T to find out! THANKS as always!
Always great demos Pete ! Sounds great, but seems like you lose the volume knob cleanup. My compromise when I use my 800 is 6-7 gain then boost it with a good overdrive for more when needed. Still cleans up nice and rocks as well. Played a show with that last week. Kinda fun taking a break from channel switching and loop switching rigs and just playing the amp and a couple pedals.
Definitely nothing wrong with pedals and boosts - I have quite the collection myself! This one can definitely clean up but depends on how much you push the front gain stage vs the mod gain that’s inserted at its later stage. There’s always a happy balance but it’s in there if you want to do it all in this tube modded form. It’s quite responsive.
@@LegendaryTonesit's cool to have input from the source! I may have to try one myself. I've lurked for a few years listening to clips and such to see if it's something I'd want to try.
Sound wise on a video, it would be tough to hear. But basically the difference is when you slam and push the front end with a pedal, the FEEL and way the distortion occurs is different. No right or wrong way - I have quite the collection of pedals! But with the tube mod itself integrated into the circuit at high voltage, I would say it’s the difference with having more note clarity and string definition with the sustain you achieve rather than the highly compressed type of character you’ll get with a pedal.
Wow, David has done it again, hasn't he!!!! Scary good is an understatement. Killer tone that is unobtainable with traditional gain pedals! Hats off for mr Legendarytones, David Szabados🤘🤘
I always wanted one of these for my Marshall JCM800 4010 combo and my Carvin X-50B with 4x12 cab. Anyway possible to get into some studio type rack stuff, ie. Radial jd7 injector lol. Fantastic review as always!
Its worth mentioning; If your guitar goes muddy when you roll the volume down, its because the volume pot is wired up wrong. If memory serves, the pickups should be across the carbon strip with the wiper connected to the output - that way the impedance across the pickup (which is an inductor and has a charge/release time affected by impedance loading) remains constant which the output to the amp can go from 250k/500k to ground, which the amp will handle fine. Grounding the amp's input is the same as having nothing plugged into it. ;o)
My Old JCM800 Marshall has winged “ C” tubes and is already amazing and my JCM900 has been switched over to KT88 tubes . I’m good buddy . Great video PETE thanks for sharing . Unless I’m playing outdoor gigs on full balls my settings in my studio are 4&7 on both amps . Wish you would have played a humbucker guitar also .
I’m thinking of adding one of these to my HDRX 50, because I was kinda disappointed with how little amount of gain it actually has. I’m just scared to damage the amp, but they claim the reverse wire version will work on it. Hot rodded Hendrix amp incoming soon? Edit: Also, the circuit isn’t quite 100% 1959 super lead, it has a little JTM-45 in it so I’m just wondering if it’ll affect the life of the rest of the amp really
It’s a secondary ground for certain amps like the Friedman Runt and Marshall SC20H that don’t use a base tube shield (so the L bracket and thumbscrew that otherwise serves as ground won’t work). We advise people who do have tube shield bases otherwise to still use the ground cable clamp as well - normally attached to a filter cap ring, transformer bolt, or output tube retainer ring.
That’s a great appetite for destruction tone. I’d love to hear a 59 les paul through that. I know that slash used a 59 copy. I wonder if the pick ups were wax potted ? Anyway , great video. 🤟🤩👍
George is my guitar hero. I do not think the guy gets enough attention. YJM noodled around way way too much, but brought us harmonic minor. Evh had taping but it really was eddies rhythm playing and tone that is the bees knees IMO, the groove is incredible. you combine those two and you get lynch. The tone that sounds "on fire", tasteful harmonic minor. The "lynch chords" my dad always called it like the Unchain the night main riff when he walks down the power chord
Hahahha, so I'm guessing that you might not know that the amp Slash used on AFD is the exact same amp George Lynch used in the studio. I don't mean same design, I mean Slash stole the exact amp from the rental company George used. After AFD, George lost his tone. So yah it makes sense that a new Mr Scary sounds like an old Slash.😀

The Mr scary mod works amazing in a 1959 too
Big fan of this.
That was... exceptional, Pete. I could FEEL ya playing and rocking out!
Exactly, just add a pre amp or tube screamer in front and be happy
I’m a fan of the Back for the Attack album and its aggressive tones too. Toss up between it and the Under Lock and Key records for me. 🤟🏻
Love it
Neat. I'll have to check which JCM800 I have when I get home. It would be fun to have this as a reversible option.
George has such great tone very overlooked. Plus he had those module amps out before most. Great video!
Sounds killer Pete. Love to hear it with one of plexi's!
Wicked Sentation album have one of the best tones ever!!
Gilby Clarke's JCM800!?! Saw him play with GnR back in 92 at Wembley Stadium.
And saw him play with Slash's Snakepit in 95 at the Forum.
Did Gilby Clarke lend the head for the demo?
They were cool, kind of a sleeper
Would love to hear that module with the Top Hat!
Pete! How do you always write the best demo jams . You should release all your demos songs on CD.
Spot on
Damnit! I was tricked! I misread the banner and thought it was about to premiere! Nooo in 15 hours! Sheesh!
I’m stoked to hear hear this! 🤘🤘
Just got mine yesterday and it's in my Friedman jj100. Awesome.
Jesus, why in that amp? There's already a ton of gain and an extra preamp tube
@@sahlomonic All I can say is you'd have to try it. You can tailor the gain to your requirement and the bass boost is great for messing around at home. I mainly bought it to use in my smallbox, but it's great in any amp it will work with.
Amazeballs demo Mr. Pete!! I have a Marshall Origin 20 head that I use as a backup, and was wondering if this would work on it, or blow it up?
Thanks Pete!
I love watching George he is awesome for me I run an evh stealth 100 watt takes care of everything
Always awesome Pete!! Thank you for the content!
Freaking Love that tone! Perfect Video, Pete!
Thanks for sharing!
Ive been super interested in these!! Thanks Pete!! Always love the videos!
THANKS as always!
the tone works. your riffs where awesome even thou im a thash fan. just cool.
Pete plays tasty licks and is fun to watch.
Wonder how this would compare to using a Tumnus Deluxe in front of the amp. Be interesting to do an A/B test.
Sounded really cool loads of CRRANG to the sound
great sounds and outstanding playing
Wow, David has done it again, hasn't he!!!! Scary good is an understatement. Killer tone that is unobtainable with traditional gain pedals! Hats off for mr Legendarytones, David Szabados🤘🤘
I like it. I’ve got a DSL100H which already has a lot of gain, but I’d like to sharpen it up
besides the tone, damn your playing was on fire too
I always wanted one of these for my Marshall JCM800 4010 combo and my Carvin X-50B with 4x12 cab.
Grounding the amp's input is the same as having nothing plugged into it. ;o)
Great review, great product. Shout out to David, well done!
Great playing man! You don't get enough credit!
My Guitar has a Thornbucker 2 humbucker in the bridge!
60 years later and the JCM800 finally sound kind of good.
Hanging out for a model compatible with ENGL amps, fingers crossed!!
Gusty and articulate. So is the mod! 😁
Awesome tone. Does it work with Marshall SC20 head which has 2 EL34s ( MINI 800)?
wOW.....OPENING is hilarious Pete.......please Dont forget that flatted 5tH!
That is my favorite of your guitars. I love when you show it off. Just the look of it says 'play me' !!! 😇
MR. SCARY'S SALT AND PEPPER! 🤘
Hey Pete, thanks so much for all your great videos, very helpful bro. One question, what is that wire hanging off of the MR. SCARY TUBE MODULE?
It’s a secondary ground for certain amps like the Friedman Runt and Marshall SC20H that don’t use a base tube shield (so the L bracket and thumbscrew that otherwise serves as ground won’t work). We advise people who do have tube shield bases otherwise to still use the ground cable clamp as well - normally attached to a filter cap ring, transformer bolt, or output tube retainer ring.
@@LegendaryTones 10-4. Thanks
Mother of Crikey! You can rip on that thing! 🥳 I am not getting any work done 😂🤣 Another fantastic video Mr. Thorn! 🤘😎
It reminds me of Slash's AFD album tone as well. I think It can do that great.
