I’m a massive fan of Nathan Fielder and I genuinely thought the show was terrible. It didn’t even come close to his previous work. Painfully boring and not at all on the same level.
I think Nathan Fielder IS the most manipulative person in any of his shows, but that is the entire premise and gimmick behind them. The Rehearsal changes the gimmick a little bit by having the "victim" be in on the manipulation whereas in Nathan For You the "victim" takes the brunt of the joke.
I think that’s part of the art, Nathan goes to such efforts to make 90% of the brunt of the joke himself that you don’t really feel like the contestants are just being made fun of for the show. I know he says that on his end his definitely acting to a degree and exaggerating the awkward but everyone else is supposed to be real
Nathan For You's series finale with the sex worker is EXTREMELY overt about this. The entire point is that they are both lying to each other, feigning interpersonal connection based on a character they perform for work, and neither could ever admit this because it goes against the entire premise of what they do.
Edit: also he started out doing magic as a teen, so yeah, I'd say he's probably pretty comfortable with tricking his audience lol
I agree for the most part, but I wouldn’t say the “victim” takes the brunt of the joke. Nathan is the character, he’s supposed to be the joke (for the most part at least, there are still some “strange” non-actors on the show).

Is it really even comedy, though? I feel like Nathan For You was undoubtedly comedy, but The Rehearsal seems 99.9% unscripted drama.
The genius of The Rehearsal is the way it slowly tricks you into accepting the insane moves he pulls by doing the escalations step by step until you wonder how the hell you got here

I found that as the show went on, it became more and more clear that he was inviting the audience to grapple with these ideas explicitly. Especially in the finale, it's apparent that he's making some kind of statement on reality TV and its inherent manipulative nature.
exactly, it's like every question that was brought up on twitter he ended up asking within the show itself, either through him or through his interactions with the real people and actors. so so brilliant. one of the most strange and captivating shows i've ever seen.

I mean there are instances like Rebel Wilson in ptch perfect where an actor pretty much improvises all their lines so yeah but I think the biggest point is how it's more scripted in the sense of we are only shown what the producers want to see and let to believe its that person. With normal TV we know that there just actors playing a role but some reality TV shows can really screw up lives by pretending their villains really are that evil such as zoe alexander and ariel burdett, the latter even committed suicide due to the x factor not coming clean about the fact she was playing a character so she was spammed with hate.
@@princessofhell4639 That's not "script" tho; that's manipulation and editing w/ the sole intent of weaving THE narrative that producers believe will garner the most viewership, and net the most profit. "Regular TV" is 100% scripted and controlled (though yeah, some actors veer off-script and people like the Duplass bros will sometimes have their actors basically make up a movie as they go along), but it never presents itself as "reality;" everyone knows it's fake. Reality TV DOES present itself as..."reality," and, even though it's obviously not "unadulterated reality," contestants STILL maintain agency; producers/directors/etc can manipulate them, and alter their agency (via alcohol for example), but they can't read minds, jump inside them, and spit out their own lines from another's body.
Even when contestants "act" (and I'm sure there have been times when contestants have been handed (at least "loose") scripts), it's different than "regular acting," because we're seeing a non-professional attempt to behave in ways they've been instructed to, all the while understanding they're "supposed" to appear genuine to an audience. The Rehearsal is aware of all this, and fucks w/ concepts like "reality" and "truth" and "acting" to the extent that it's all deconstructed into an oblivion (which I personally believe was Nathan's intent). Something something META blah blah LAYERS words words IRONY...def not gonna try to dissect the show further rn but it's a mindfuck.
People say the "reality TV is more scripted" shit because reality TV pretends to be something it clearly isn't, BUT it's still wayyy closer to reality than any "regular TV."
I do agree with the problem of negative REAL consequences for contestants in their personal lives (sometimes literally life-ruining). Like, I hate that; the discussion of reality TV ethics is so nuanced, subjective and complex that it could have it's own 10 season docu-series... @nickisnotgreen HMU if you ever wanna collab on that dissert tho.
I always took that phrase as an exaggeration more than a literal thing just to push the narrative that reality TV ain't exactly something done on the spot but carefully crafted scenes edited by the editors/producers to fit what they want to show us.
after binging the whole show last night my immediate thought was just that nathan fielder is a literal genius. I read some critic reviews last night and the one star reviews are just people that didn't get it because they think his persona is the real him. They're mostly saying he's arrogant for thinking he can tell how someone is feeling just by pretending to be them. That's how you know it's good I guess
The newest episode kinda went into direction of Nathan himself saying that ofcourse he cannot tell what other people feel, at the endwhen he breaks and calls himself as dad and not mom and then goes with it that no he is dad. Atleast I took it pretty in your face way of saying that ofcourse he cannot recreate perfectly what the mom felt with his son starting to call Nathan his dad but that he can try to. The goal is to see what happens, so it's weard for some people to think he suggests that he knows for sure. Also obviously Nathan is being manipulative in many parts but it is very hard to be mad at him for the brilliance of what the show have done. It goes to the territory of I don't think anyone have been hurt to the point of not having done the series at all would be more beneficial than seeing the experiment thru.

The reviews I saw made me think of the 'fielder method' episode, the one where he copies the one actor's routine and relives everything through his eyes, thinking it means he is able to understand the actor perfectly. I'm guessing some one-star reviewers took that bit seriously.

Why is no one talking about the Remy situation? I feel like I’m going crazy. I mean Nathan didn’t break any laws, but don’t you think he should’ve done more due diligence before casting a literal 6 year old?
I disagree that Kor painted his friend to be a bad person. I think having a certain amount of anxiety makes you automatically assume that people will think the worst of you no matter what. I think he was deeply insecure and ashamed which led him to create the worst case scenario and replay it over and over in his head, which is why this show is incredible. It brings these scenarios that we internally get so obsessed by that we lose sight of reality into the real world, which ends up making them look as silly as they actually are, even though they seem debilitating in the moment.
I agree with this! I think Kor's anxiety over his lie really clouded his ability to judge how Trisha would really react. I mean, even he was shocked when she was totally fine with his confession. And truthfully, from Kor's perspective of Trisha at the beginning of the episode, she definitely was made out to look like this angry and potentially violent person. But, I'd like to think that the reveal of her being totally chill about it and even comforting him over his feelings of shame and insecurity about it was a bit of redemption moment for them both of them haha. And like you said, it totally shed light on how silly the whole situation really was despite how debilitating it felt for Kor in that moment.

ANTM has thousands of issues, Jessica Kobeissi has covered a lot of episodes so if ever you want to watch someone discuss it I'd recommend her. She's covered everything from their endangerment of the models, to the SA that happened ON CAMERA, to how they purposefully set them up for failure, their endless body shaming and just overall endangerment of these poor young innocent girls :( Every time you think it can't get worse it does.

This show has personally has changed how I interact with my own social anxiety and overthinking issues. There are so many moments that almost point the camera directly at you, it may be uncomfortable but most definitely cathartic in a way I haven’t seen in a TV show.
informed consent is such a tricky topic in acting "reality." as someone working in film i am constantly struggling to grapple with portraying and capturing "reality" without crossing ethical barriers. i think thats what makes this show so interesting. the ethics and the optics are controversial and that's the fucking point. people are trying to make some grand statement and moralize an industry standard.that nathan is more intentional about than any other filmmaker i have seen.
watching the rehearsal really just makes me think how the reality of the film industry is likely way more "ethically murky" than what's presented for us on the show, like it's a very expensive professional show with a large crew, tons of other productions have way less resources and experience which often leads to more unprofessional scenarios in the workplace. it's just that people don't get to peek at the productions side of their favorite shows to compare.

i think this show is very fucking good at portraying autism OCD and anxiety over everything else. is it rational to have a rehearsal? no. but is it what many of us NDs secretly dream of? yes! living out our worst nightmares without the consequences! absolutely!
This!!! The amt of times I related to Nathan...for certain factors. Like, the flow chart for potential conversations? I went, damn, that might be a good idea.
Really, I think it's a dramatized version of certain neurodivergencies. Like, for the first guy, using an entire fake set and actors just to reveal a simple lie is crazy in concept, but at some point I realized that often times my anxiety made me wish I could play out a conversation multiple times before actually having it.
As a psychology major, this show was absolutely incredible and I am really intrigued by it from an ethics standpoint. The last episode is insane I would love to hear your take.

I Absolutely want to hear what you have to say about the rest of the season and what you think it says about performance versus reality, because, as with Nathan For You, it feels like this is one of Nathan’s most major themes in his work.

I literally was watching this show yesterday and it brings so much discomfort and but also highly intrigues me sometimes b/c it feels like he-nor the participants realize what’s happening until it already happens… it’s sometimes creepy and (mildly) intrusive at times, but it’s also v introspective and I feel strange watching it-mostly b/c of how put together the show is. I’m so unused to such a well-crafted reality show that it seems uncanny by default, but that’s part of the fun of the immersion. I think there are def some days watching it where I need to take breaks b/c I get overstimulated by the perceived morals qualms presented by the show, but overall it’s enjoyable and v v interesting.
this is exactly how I feel about it! I think my biggest problem with the show is that it simply doesn't work if the "contestant" is in on the joke. The joke being that Nathan is always doing a bit, and the show is intentionally ridiculous in order to create uncomfortable situations. They can't be in on it, or the entire premise goes out the window. I also LOVE the show. Like, some of my favorite TV of all time. So... my consensus is, IDK lol
My biggest issue with the show was the use of child actors. It's one thing for adults to agree to do the show but the stage moms who signed their kids up, was the most fucked up thing.
By the last episode we see two moms have to deal with their kids being confused due to acting in the house and to me it's really fucked up to force your kid into this situation without thinking of the consequences. I loathe parents that get their kids in front of a camera and make them work without thinking about how it might cause them harm.

To start off, I am a HUGE fan of Nathan For You and really enjoyed the first episode of the Rehearsal. However, as things went on, I literally had to stop the show because of anxiety attacks. I think almost all of Nathan's actions (past the first episode) were ethically wrong. The genius of the show is showing you how manipulative all TV shows can be to actors and viewrs. Throughout the show, you get glimpses of what "consent" is in Hollywood (Fielder school of acting), how producers can emotionally manipulate their stars for drama (Angela and the OD), and the terrible consequences of child acting.
While, the breakthroughs may be eye=opening, I can't feel good knowing that Nathan hurt so many people and I feel sick and anxious thinking about this show.
errrr not every child actor has horrible parents forcing them in front of the screen; for every Jannette McCurdy there's an Ariana Grande who's parents were seemingly already well off, didn't have any history in show business, and just got her into theater because that's what she wanted. You get a Maculay Culkin sometimes and a Leonardo DiCaprio sometimes. Hell, Kurt Russel was a child actor, though granted he's also a bit of a nepotism baby(his dad was a famous western tv actor). Sometimes kids want to be actors, and the parents are just supportive.

just one correction: The Rehearsal is already renewed for season 2 - and it’s HBO Max shows getting the axe, not HBO Originals (like Succession, Euphoria and The Rehearsal). besides that, probably the best video on the show so far, kudos.
before watching i gotta say that i love nathan fielder and really enjoyed The Rehearsal. i think he’s very self aware in what he does and never intends himself to look like the good guy but let’s see how this video goes

The Rehearsal is really a show about pulling back the curtain on reality tv and unscripted content. The show may be unscripted but the producer is still heavily driving the storyline of the show.
I love The Rehearsal, it is unique and beautiful and thought provoking. So glad it's getting a second season.

The guy who was fighting his inheritance might have been too far, but the woman with the child…genius/insane/meta/bizarre. I don’t even know if it was wrong or right, it was just so crazy I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the screen
I think it might’ve helped that guy deal with his emotions for the first time since his grandfather(?) died. At least I hope that’s the case and he was finally able to confront his brother.
That’s true it helped him get that break through. Just the shit part? And the fact that he didn’t come back make me think that it might be a bit iffy
I know a guy who was on a cooking competition, and he was eliminated because he couldn't cook the shellfish they gave him because he was allergic. They kept telling him they were going to bring him a respirator and some gloves, but they never did so he never cooked it. Then they tried to convince him to eat some shellfish and have an allergic reaction because it would make good tv and they would let him stay and keep competing. They even kept him there for three more days trying to convince him to do that.
i love how chaotic, unhinged, and intelligent he is. i never know his endgame and the morals are debatable but thats what makes all things good...better call saul, bo burnham, etc...
So the bar that Kor confessed in was actually full of actors. That table was a plant, as were everyone else in the bar, accept for Kor and Trisha. It's the reason Nathan planned for it in the rehearsal, then place the familiar obstacles for Kor to overcome.

When I watched The Rehearsal, I saw it as a direct reflection to my own experience with anxiety. When I saw Kor's struggles and the way he talked about his fears and needs for the rehearsal, it seemed like an exaggerated form of the self-talk and practices that i might do before I have to talk to a store clerk. The scene in episode 1 where the whole bar mocks Kor for his confession was a nightmare situation i can imagine I would fear and imagine prior to making the confession. Knowing that Nathan also struggles with social awkwardness and anxiety I can see exactly where this idea for the show comes from.

The Fielder method worked! That's an entire video right there. Every one that took his class learned to be a better actor. The boy changed his entire performance once he got some directors notes.
The whole show was an interesting experience to watch, but nothing topped the first episode. They found the perfect specimens
Kor seemed to have the perfect personality to be able to rehearse an encounter so many times. It’s unfortunate that other people brought in didn’t have the patience for the whole process. But we are lucky to have one beautiful example of it.

I love Nathan Fielder’s shows. His manipulation and over the top preparation to solve whatever issue the customer is having is what makes it so funny, not to mention Nathan’s general awkward vibes. He’s doing what he does out of care imo.
i have to be honest, this felt like a pretty shallow analysis of a really ethically and conceptually complex show. it kinda felt like 20 mins of "in defense of nathan fielder" rather than really picking apart the show, trying to determine what was real and what was scripted, and really delving into the bigger ethical issues which all happen after ep 1. i dont think you can discuss the ethics of this show at all without discussing episode 3, where the main subject literally disappears off the show because he's clearly disturbed that nathan faked an actor's death similar to that of his grandfather's to further the plot. you'd also have to discuss the perspective of the skeptical acting student, and ofc the angela and remy situations.
i actually loved the show, binged it all in one night, i think it's genius. i actually think much more of this show was scripted than we're led to believe, and it really makes the viewer think. there were a bunch of easter eggs that make me think it's a pure scripted psychological thriller with a bit of comedy thrown in. but if you're going to assume it's mostly reality tv when talking about ethics, you need to discuss all the other ethical murky waters.
re: consent - kor merely responded to a craigslist ad with a video - he didnt even know he was signing up for this in the beginning until he was told so on camera after nathan had rehearsed the convo a million ways - one could easily be manipulated into consenting given that scenario, so though saying "they signed a consent form" is legally clear, it certainly isn't ethically. there's even a bit about that in the show when the acting student tries to make sense of the long consent form. the entire show is about rehearsing scenarios to get your desired outcome so it would have been nice to see you cover that when analyzing how "consent" would work in this show, if you're assuming it's a reality show
I really liked the transition art style. It was crude but lively with the boxes not yet being finished. It gave it a very raw but unique way of giving information about who worked on the video and what section we were at.
A couple things:
Im not sure how much you looked into the bachelor in paradise situation but I do think it’s important to note that there was not a sexual assault. That story was updated years ago with both parties dismissing claims of sexual assault after NDAs were lifted. Because that issue was also slightly racialized in the media i think it’s important to be accurate in how you’re talking about that.
Also I don’t think Kor’s fears about intellectual inadequacy were “absurd” or ridiculous. He didn’t want to have a masters for “trivia purposes”, it was to not feel inferior in a group of other peers who were all well past receiving their bachelors.
Nathan Fielder has always been a favorite of mine.
He had many good short videos back in the early days of youtube.
My favorite is his "Thin Watermelon", which is a great watch if you have an extra 32 seconds to spare.
"Once A Year" is good, and the song "Morning Walk" by Side of Smooth is too.
I'm still not convinced that the participants are not majority actors. Kor seemed the most real out of all of them. Maybe the concept changed from episodic to more storyline-focused with the last 5 episodes, because the first was filmed before covid so there was a huge gap in time before resuming production.
And I'm guessing that poor kid wasn't an actor-I'm not sure a six year old can give such a convincing performance. But Angela, her potential boyfriend and his roommate, the acai bowl actor, and mayyybe inheritance man come off potentially as actors.
The reason I think this is ultimately, that Nathan is the main character by the end. It's HIS rehearsal. It would mesh thematically that the "participants" are actors in a simulation made for him. Specifically a simulation for being a father, given the last lines. It would also be in line with how the show is constantly tricking the audience. The longer the show goes on, the less clear it becomes what is rehearsal and what is real.
In addition, it definitely seemed that Nathan had a story structure he was building towards, with specific beats, that would be hard to leave up to chance. However I concede that reality tv crafts storylines in the editing room as well. But this show seemed SO thematically driven that it's hard for me to believe it all came down to post-production edits.
Part of me just loves a good twist I think. And if the main subjects are actors, I'd guess they're actors insofar as light direction with improv to make sure the story beats are hit. And then the "rehearsal" actors have a more rigid script, which would give them and the "subjects" performances quite a different feel, maybe enough of a difference to seem real.
ALL THAT SAID. Scripted or not, acted or real, I loved the ride this show took me on. Honestly ground-breaking, compelling, unsettling, and I love Nathans off-beat, disorienting humor. If the subjects are real, his deadpan style definitely legitimizes the "social experiments" the participants think they've been recruited for.
Angela and the would be boyfriend definitely aren't actors. Both have social media accounts going way back. The would be boyfriends brother even came out and said that dude really is that ridiculous.... the show makes it pretty clear when it's using actors
@@TheLokiBiz allow me to put the tin-foil hat on now-I don't think it'd be beyond Nathan Fielder to curate social media and even incorporate real family members to continue the ruse. He is, after all, the man behind "goat in the water". Season 2 has been confirmed and if it IS all fake, it'd be quite the explosive reveal if it was all an elaborate trick.
Totally open to being wrong, but I'm surprised there isn't more of this sentiment? I don't think it ruins the magic of the show any-if it's entirely orchestrated, that just speaks even more to Nathan's strange genius.

This show is something else. It’s hard to put into words what I feel when I watch it. An odd sensation of being on both sides of a microscope; at once the viewer and view-ee.

Same, I feel like the show went from a fun concept to something hard to even describe. I think it is telling that participants started dropping out. But it's such a complicated show by the end that analysis might become like trying to analyze House of Leaves. Where untangling everything takes so much effort that analysis becomes almost secondary. Near the end of the show, while I was laughing and amazed at how complex it was, I did leave feeling very uneasy (while the first episodes didn't leave me with any negative feelings)
The Rehearsal is problematic. If Nathan Fielder keeps this up in Season 2, he’s going to Truman Show himself back into a baby & relive his life up until the 1st day of filming The Rehearsal, causing a rip into space time thus collapsing our universe to a single point.

"Nathan for you" is SUPER underrated
As the season went on I started to question more and more how real the people on it were, the whole show really could be loosely scripted but still capture the feeling of reality tv. Throughout the show nathan saw how his actions effected more and more people but what I found interesting was how the situations he rehearses for effect him. There have been a fee rehearsals he sets up for himself where you can see the emotions he’s going though, he’s brought to tears when he rehearses a fight with angela and cries over a scenario he set up to go through with his fake son. he does multiple rehearsals of the same day to understand how his students perceive him and how to become a better acting coach. Every time he goes deeper and deeper trying to experience as many points of view as he can. The show quickly became less about helping others and more about exploring nathan’s need to have a plan along with his lack of self. He removes himself from everything to a point where he no longer experiences things as him and when he’s brought back to reality he has to deal with the things that brought him to where he is now, the things he didn’t rehearse for.
Love the video and your commentary of the show! On a side note, I really love that the Connect-A-Desk Laptop Harness has gotten so much attention from the show! I work in TV Production myself and used the Connect-A-Desk everyday during filming to take notes. We came up with the nickname "Nerd Harness" and it felt quite fitting.

I also think the show is quite introspective, Kor (the first "subject") being a person on the spectrum I don't believe is coincidence. Nathan himself, whether it's the character he plays, really him, or an exaggerated facet of himself, often gives off at the very least hints of similar struggle with awkwardness and social cues. I tend to think it insinuates either himself (or his character) may be ASD as well. As someone that has a lot of experience with ASD and people with ASD, it almost felt like he was trying to show how it affects people (and possibly himself) when it comes to how hyper-focused and rigorous you get while trying to understand and combat the struggles you have in social settings + communication. I think this theme trails off as the show goes on and focuses on different aspects of the concept, how people react, how far it can go, the ramifications, etc. I do, however, believe that there really is a link there as well and while I haven't gone too deep into discussions about the show yet, I haven't seen it mentioned.
While you can debate morality, I trust Nathan more to try and help/handle the impact it may have on the actors a whole lot more than reality TV producers, and the show showcases these things for a reason, peering behind the curtain of other shows with similar premises, opening the conversation for people that are/have been affected by this. If anything, I think the fact it was left in and shown so heavily as a key point of the show is really important and advocating against the manipulation/emotional distress of actors in general, rather than being just "taking it to the next level" or unashamedly doing it and cutting it out like this journalist is suggesting. They didn't seem to grasp that, like they may miss that something was satirical (unfortunately).
Dude if my friend did all this to come clean about a lie, when I saw Nathan Fielder running out of the bushes I would just be so thrilled with the absurdity of the situation that I would forgive the lie no matter what.

I randomly met Carrie Keep (S9 of Hell's Kitchen) semi-recently. She was surprised I recognized her because the season aired over ten years ago, but my best friend and I watched it during quarantine. I got to ask her if she was upset at how she was portrayed in the show and how it effected her life afterwards. She said her biggest issue was mostly that the show tried to paint her rivalry with another contestant as racist, even though (not gonna lie) that contestant was a straight up bully. Like, for real she was a bully in the show and apparently she was a huge bully off-camera too. Though I thought, more than anything, Carrie was framed as whiny and incompetent. She said she was grateful for the experience but it was really stressful and ended up not being worth it--it kind of made it harder for her to find work afterwards.
She was incredibly nice and I think she was happy she could talk about her experience with someone willing to hear her side. I found it off-putting how, in that same season, one of the finalists was a 30 year old guy dating a 19 year old, and it was almost entirely glossed over--I get that it didn't really affect the actual content, but damn I felt so grossed out by it--Yet they really honed in on Carrie, making her look like a whiny bitch for not being emotionally strong enough to handle constantly being singled out, bullied, and working in the Hell's Kitchen environment on top of that. It made for "good drama" and I guess you "have to have thick skin" to work in the high-end restaurant business. But damn I really can't imagine how awful it'd be to actually participate in one of these shows, even The Replacements. And I fucking love Nathan Fielder lol
First the Amandla Stenberg/film critic drama..now this. These critics are going down left and right and I for one love it. I don’t even know why being a film critic is a career.
Nathan not only manipulates the participants, but he manipulates the audience as well. I think that is what leaves so many people unsettled. By the end, the viewer doesn't know what is real and fake, unsure of what lines nathan has actually crossed for the sake of his content and what has been scripted. That is what makes the series so genius and is also probably why so many people are mad.
Crazy how one guy being open about the unethical stuff of his reality tv show is enough to make the show so uncomfortable, all while probably not even being half as bad as the average reality tv show

did that new yorker writer even watch the whole show? i find it fascinating that nathan ACTUALLY discusses the ethics of the show in later episodes, like when he rehearses signing a waiver for the show and the whole plot with the mother and her son who played adam. He directly analyzes the morality of doing what he does.

I understand why you people like to assume he’s manipulative because even long time fans are conflicted. But He’s not fucked up. He’s definitely genius but he’s not fucked. There’s an interview he has with Alexa Demie on the A24 podcast where Alexa asks Nathan “When you're doing Nathan for You, do you feel like you’re very present and grounded in who you are as a human being, as Nathan Fielder? Or do you feel like you lose yourself a little bit in this version of yourself?” Which Nathan replies to Alexa saying “Yeah. Usually when we're done filming a season, I need to almost take three full months to kind of get my personality back. Because it's not so extreme. It's just, I do feel like my tendency in a real conversation is to make it okay. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable or something. But in the show, I wouldn't correct that. I would just let that failure hang, and from an outside viewer, it would be funny, the failure. But for me, in the moment, I'm sitting with that discomfort.”
Which is what? You guessed it, ACTING. The Rehearsal was carefully curated to show an audience the extremes producers and actors go to for the sake of a show they don’t even know will succeed or fail. Not only that, there also wasn’t any contracts that held or forced those actors to be there. Any of the people apart of the project had the liberty of leaving and discontinuing their work on set. But what?They chose to stay. Not all, Angela eventually gave in but only when Nathan questioned her motives. And Patrick left either because he was upset they faked the grandpa actors death OR he built up the courage to ask for the inheritance without the rehearsal. But why did these people even stick around to begin with? Screen time. It’s Nathan showing us the what people will do in production & the lengths and what people will put up with for stardom. And people aren’t always aware of the consequences it will have, just like Remy’s mom. And even Nathan himself became aware of that there was consequences and he held himself responsible. He cleaned up his one mess, he acted in a way producers and directors NEVER do. You think any other Hollywood director would go to someone’s house to try and make things right for a kid? Absolutely not. Even if it was on camera. The show was meant to give insight apart from MANY other subjects. So anyone that says Nathan is manipulative or fucked up is missing the point completely.
After seeing the first episode I was so stoked for the series thinking it would be a new rehearsal each episode or every other one at least. I didn’t think the rest of the season was bad, but it dragged on for me. Angela was a tough character to watch especially toward the end.
It got too meta for me.
But i would definitely watch a second season.

The finale on “Nathen for you” was basically the 1st rehearsal.

This makes me so happy! I loved Nathan For You and was absolutely thrilled that Nathan Fielder had a new show. And honestly, it didn’t really disappointed. It’s incredibly creative and leaves you with so many emotions. So glad one of my favorite RUclipsrs covered this!

I think that Nathan grapples with this format, and honestly hearing the mom just know the kid’ll be fine made me miss my mom. They really do just have this universal intuition moments where in they know that everything will be just fine. 💗
I don't think the lies are just for lying sake - for me, I have a fear of "what if I just said this false, harmful thing." I don't, and if I did one day I would just say "I'm sorry, thats an ADHD symptom similar to tourettes" and the people I care about would understand, and I've even talked to them beforehand just in case this irrational thing happens. But for some people SAYING this thing in their head means they don't have to think about it anymore. Not that this absolves anyone with ADHD who lies, just that its not always only intended to be petty or get a table. Which if it is, may also be another hyperfixation on the table that isn't about the table itself

nathan is funny and as a neurodivergent person i dont get to see a lot of humor targeted to my audience. obviously, its reality tv so i expect it to be overdramatic the same way love island is, they dont say that the producers of love island are cruel and manipulative despite them actually treating their contestants like crap.

I was so happy when this show started since Nathan never really broke thru and I have seen him on credits for like writing for Sacha Baron Cohen so I tought he might do that, write for other people as his job. This series have gone far beyond what I tought even Nathan could do and have already been so unique rollercoaster. He have managed to build the whole complex thing to really explore feelings which is what so called these kinda experiments in shows usually lack. It's so unique that it's hard to compare to anything but for example meaning what Sacha Baron Cohen does (and I'm not undermining him in anyway by that).
The fact that he is the ONLY ONE who can go on with the show tells a lot about it

I loved this show and found it very moving at times and other times hilarious and heart breaking. You can't really say that about a lot of other shows. Ordinarily I love The New Yorker but in this case they're FOS. Great point about other reality shows. Very cute take on your part. Your cat's adorable.

As someone on the autism spectrum, I’ve found Nathan’s behavior in both of his shows insanely relatable. His desire for structure, how he acts confused about the behaviors of other people, and his constant over analyzisis hit close to home. (Mild spoilers here) his rehearsed argument with fake Angela, where she asks if he can feel anything and states he never will almost brought me to tears because it was so relatable. I’m not saying anything about whether or not Nathan is neurodivergent or if it affects how his shows are received, I just wanted to say why both of these shows mean a lot to me.
