Never heard of a Play yan or whatever but when the GBA SP was out I had a blank cart that I could add whatever games I wanted to, even emulated NES games, but it did video too.
Note how someone found a "NintendoMP3Player" which was actually official and was a normal Play-Yan, with the Mario-stickman firmware. It was for the DS and released in 2007 I think.
Fun fact: Play-Yan video, while bad, is still not disappointing for the times. Remember the Sega CD console addon for Sega Genesis in 1993? It took me over 2 years but I finally decided to get this video off my Watch Later playlist and watch it. This was interesting. I might want to get one of these Game Boy Advance Video Paks one day. 🤓
I remember finding a Game Boy Advance Video cartridge on Amazon. I still have it. It has episodes 2 and 3 of Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go on it (it was one of the very few pieces of merchandise from the show that I could find).

I never got one of these back in the day because the video packs were always more expensive than the equivalent VHS or DVD. I was also annoyed that they wouldn't work on the Game Boy Player, because that was my first thought when they came out. When they couldn't even do that, I just wrote them off. I never thought to use them for travel, because we didn't go many places, and I didn't have a GBA with a backlit screen because I didn't like how they required you to plan everything in advance and charge your device. I liked AA batteries because you didn't have to charge them. But it seems like the requirement that you be disciplined and get in the habit of charging up whatever device you'll need ahead of time has become the standard, much to my chagrin. As a result of that, my phone doesn't work half the time and I'm always having to find a random computer and e-mail people text messages telling them my phone is dead. I have not adjusted well to the kind of discipline required to keep something charged at all times.

This is something i think could return for the Switch, i mean imagine entire SEASONS of shows in your pocket, no internet required, in glorious HD, on a decent-sized screen. Like the entire original Pokemon Origins series, or Adventure Time. Perhaps Star Vs the Forces of Evil, or even some classics like Robotech: The Macross Saga and the original DBZ?
I had a slot one flash cart for my gba sp that allowed me play video or MP3. Think it was the supercard. Anyway, there was an easy drag drop conversion utility that converted the videos to a format I can't remember the extension for. Long story short, I crammed about 30 episodes of aqua teen hunger force and some looney tunes on there and my coworkers were jealous as hell. My Sony phone also played videos. Can't remember the model but it's the one that spins open.
I wish I had the Brandy and Mr. Whiskers and Lilo and Stitch ones if I ever had a Game Boy Advance. The GBA Video release of Brandy and Mr. Whiskers is the only home release of the series outside of Disney Channel. Lilo and Stitch is quite an interesting case. One episode was released on DVD alongside Leroy and Stitch and the complete series was released in Japan with the Japanese dub bundled with the Stitch! anime. The GBA Video release is the only standalone American release.
Wasnt the animal crossing movie on a ds video pak as a movie ticket preorder gift or someting? I remember reading somewhere that nintendo compressed the whole movie onto a ds card and releasing it for some promotion in japan only
I've had 4 Nintendo products through my lifetime. I've had the Game Boy adavanced, Wii, Nintendo dsi, and 3ds. I really, really, really want the 2ds though!
I had the Shrek 1 and 2 pack, and I watched them all the time. To the point where I still have the scripts for both memorized, albeit moreso the first one.
Tbh the only reason I know about Play-Yan is because the little white guy that appears in it is in Rhythm Tengoku/Rhythm Heaven Megamix XD Btw great video
Game Boy Advance Video: All GBA Video cartridges are incompatible with the Game Boy Player. This measure was to prevent users from attaching the Game Boy Player to a VCR or DVD recorder and copying the Game Boy Video material.[5] The GBA Video carts detect the Game Boy Player and refuse to boot when running under it, giving an error message. Even if the carts were playable on the player (which they are through the use of flash carts and Action Replay), the resolution was greatly reduced for the GBA medium, causing pixelation and sound pops that a large screen with louder speakers would pick up.

I was pretty young around this time, and for in-car entertainment my father had purchased a portable DVD player. Worked fine, I could actually, you know, watch movies besides Shrek. And at solid quality. Much much better solution for portable kids entertainment.
Especially since the 3DS demos at E3 had video clips for "How To Train Your Dragon" and "Tangled." Which would be kind of cool if they sold those on the eShop. I feel there is a missed opportunity there.
The video quality is surprisingly good for gba
Joseph Moulton gba is always good
They were terribly pixelated on the GBA...the GB micro shows it WAY better.

For some odd reason, Game Boy Advance Video carts can be played on the Super Retro Advance adapter for the SNES.
The Super Retro Advance Adapter is a third party GBA Clone device based on GBA hardware. The lock out on the GBA Video carts in the Game Cube Game Boy Player is software based.

Thanks for making this! I'm planning on getting a GBA SP and GB, GBC, and GBA games. I'll have to look for these packs!
Wasnt the animal crossing movie on a ds video pak as a movie ticket preorder gift or someting? I remember reading somewhere that nintendo compressed the whole movie onto a ds card and releasing it for some promotion in japan only
Holy shit this made me remember watching Pokemon on my gameboy
I will be soon getting another gba sp, but it's going to be the nes classic edition with the ags-101 screen for Christmas!!!
I Was wondering: do GBA Videos play on the Hyperkin Retron 5 and maybe the Super Retro Advance adapter for SNES?
+rescuehero942 I do have a Hyperkin Retron 5. I should check this and record the results. :-D
Gameboy Advance Video doesn't work on Gameboy Player on GameCube! But Play-Yan Micro Does work on Gameboy Player!
Catch the start of something BIG, In your hand!
I've had 4 Nintendo products through my lifetime. I've had the Game Boy adavanced, Wii, Nintendo dsi, and 3ds. I really, really, really want the 2ds though!
Get it during Black Friday. A $129 2ds with yoshi's new island was like $70-90 last time.
wow I remember these promoms so well.
Will You Do Some "Opening To [Insert Title Here] (Insert Year Here) GBA Video
I had the Shrek 1 and 2 pack, and I watched them all the time. To the point where I still have the scripts for both memorized, albeit moreso the first one.
these are the kinds of videos i watched back in 2014
I might get a hold of some of these, if I can. I have 3 types of gba, just missing AGS 101 sp
I actually have 2 gameboy videos. Before today, I thought they were called gameboy advance sp, and never thought to look it up.
I owned a copy of Pokemon Vol 3, don't know where it is now.
Patrick is my favourite character
bra,the zelda cart is so rare its like 200 in existence!
Does anyone else remember the Juicebox?
yeah it was the only form of Survival until go gurt was made
Tbh the only reason I know about Play-Yan is because the little white guy that appears in it is in Rhythm Tengoku/Rhythm Heaven Megamix XD
Btw great video
I have the Plankton SpongeBob episode on Season 1 DVD
I would have got that Strawberry Shortcake GBA Video cartridge if I have a GBA. I used to have a GBASP, but I lost it.
Is the play on compatible with the GB Player because it's a 3rd Party Flash Cart?
this is bloody amazing!
I was just asking about the DS lite and I should have finished the video because you answered it
Hey, can you do something on VideoNow?
Also, gotta go fast.
I will track some of those down. Working on a video about Hit Clipz currently. :-D
Oh god that sentence was like the biggest nostalgia bomb ever, I completely forgot about those
I should try to get as many of these as I can
PSP is the best multimedia console. You can easily transfer videos, music
+Canal do game e do hardware And you could delete from the system. Overall, the PSP Go was my go to Podcast machine for the longest time because it also had Bluetooth connectivity for my Speakers.
+Canal do game e do hardware yyyyyyyeaaaaaah......... about the video, there's only one compatible format, and the quality is only compatible at 320p or below, it sucks............ just like Frozen 15:14
+Jackson Mullins (Jack The Muss) just another Weselton!
@@dmgice The PSP uses UMDs for games, music, pictures and movies
What are you taking about gba video being compatible with gameboy and super gameboy?
Nice video, Radio DMG
I was pretty young around this time, and for in-car entertainment my father had purchased a portable DVD player. Worked fine, I could actually, you know, watch movies besides Shrek. And at solid quality. Much much better solution for portable kids entertainment.
Now, why would you watch movies that aren't Shrek? ;-)
I think the gameboy advance is water proof because the one I had (just like the one he held) went through a lot of water and still worked
I have the 2 pokemon ones and I did'nt have to use the Play-Yan thing. They can work without it.
I loved these. I have some laying around somewhere, I knew I have the Dora, spongebob, and the fairly odd parents and maybe ?rugrats?
The only Game Boy Advance Video cartridges that I have in my collection are "Sonic X: Volume 1" and "SpongeBob SquarePants: Volume 2".
OMG i remember these! I had the spongebob one and the sonicX one
Whete did you buy all the gameboy advance video?
What was the first GameBoy Advance Video release?
i was surprised when they didnt release videos for the DS... i mean, they should kept going, right?
Especially since the 3DS demos at E3 had video clips for "How To Train Your Dragon" and "Tangled."
Which would be kind of cool if they sold those on the eShop. I feel there is a missed opportunity there.
i remember before the 3ds xl shreck 3 was downloadable
