This is a wonderful piece, but I wouldn't have looked at it and thought, "The artist definitely put 11 years into this." What a thing it must be to create art over a lengthy span of time. I usually think of someone painting furiously until their vision is on the canvas (or other medium). That would be my approach, anyway. I love the outro commentary in particular - Dr. Harris gave a great summary of the complexity in this piece. I wouldn't have thought twice about it, but it was fascinating to hear about the formal elements and conflicts here. And then Dr. Zucker put the lighthearted cherry on top. It's always great to hear you two share your enthusiasm about amazing art. ❤❤
This is a snow day on account of a blizzard (though to be honest, it’s nothing out of the ordinary for Iowa in January), so I’m not at my job…at an art museum! I’m bingeing on art videos as a way of “working” from home. Thank you for all the great content!
Good, but the word' 'solidity' was missing there - he wanted the light and colour of nature and modernity, but also the solidness of reality and of the masters. Also, to nit-pick, there are not eleven, but ten 'real' figures - the eleventh on the extreme right is clearly in a different register, in a different scale - it is a sculpture - and as such is an interestingly intermediate motif between the bathers and their classical roots.
