I have a Vanquest "Pilum" sling and love it. It's one of the best camera bags I've ever owned - and that's serious praise since I mostly use Think Tank Photo bags - and it's also very versatile, easily becoming a range bag, a general EDC, or even a light travel bag for overnight trips. They're also very discreet if you avoid the obvious tactical colors and patterns, they don't look like camera bags at all to typical onlookers and aren't as blatantly tacticool as something like a Maxpedition bag either.
Nice to hear your review on these bags! Saw the price and wanted to make sure it passed the test. Nick approved! Maybe they will make a Benchmade exclusive one day......!
I carry a 24 l backpack with me to school where I teach. Do you think a 13 or 17 would work better. The 17 looks really big, but I just don't know. thanks
When Spyderco dropped the envoy 13 bag last year I got it immediately and used it as my everyday school bag, I stuffed it up every time, and after all these days there is no scratch on the bag, all are still tight and great, I love this bag, oh btw, the back bigger pocket can work as a holster pocket which you can conceal your "things" and defend yourselves when shtf :)
Great review. Funny that I love the look these bags, much more than the high end leather bags you’ve reviewed that distress so easily and often. I know that many others love leather that distresses, but I’m not one of them. So for me, not only do I like the look, I love the functionality. A+.
I've got an Osprey messenger bag that has some strong velcro on the closure like these. I never thought about it, but it keeps me from wanting to open the bag in the middle of a meeting because it's kind of loud and potentially disruptive. Something to think about if you're considering this style bag for work, depending on what you do. I've actually thought about getting something to cover the velcro so that it doesn't grab. The buckles would be fine for my use.
You can you a piece of the opposite velcro for that or buy one (maybe compare the sizes), for example from one of the oldest messenger bag brand the Timbuk2, I use these and I think I will never remove it www.timbuk2.com/products/9520-bag-silencer-strips
I just wish there were more travel bags in the vertical orientation. Having had comuted in the past on mass transit and air travel with laptops from the 4:3 aspect ration to the current 16:9, the sideways shuffle down the aisle would usually cause a horizontal bag to snag on the seats knocking the bag of a single shoulder or choking if carried messanger (cross body) style. And Nick less echo in this video compared to the last "ShaBAT-Cave" video (knife sharpening system).
Things used to leak, or not leak. Or be water resistant, or perhaps even waterproof. Now, apparently, we need to suck in our guts, square those shoulders back and down, pin our elbows, rack in that chin, and make reference to "water ingress." When talking about...courier bags. JFC.
The adjustable shoulder pad, the stabilization strap and the loop for bike light are nothing new, already available on the market for many years (maybe decades) by brands like Timbuk2, Chrome Industries or similar others. The velcros if not used can be a problem for other nearby clothes like sweaters (some can tear it), the velcro closing straps can be too noisy in some environment (I use "silencers" (strap of velcros in the opposite direction) and the buckles only), the zippers are not listed as waterproofs so I'm not sure if the external ones (like at the top) can protect the interior in a (heavy) rain. I'm not sure if the double handles needed but maybe it can depend on your hand size if a single one can be enough or not. The zipper of the inward external pocket is not sticks your waist/hip? The external bottle pockets have drainage holes? This bag is a little bit too much for my taste (but it can fit for others), currently I prefer the undivided spaces/pockets and the modular "bag in a bag" concept instead of the integrated organisers and divided pockets because it can be used more versatile and makes easier to switch between the different size of bags, backpacks, etc. (And don't forget to not use this style of bags regulary with heavy load as the asymmetryc load it is not good for your spine.)
I dont own a laptop, but I could see these working well as a camera bag for photo-proffesionals. Those end drink container spots would take on a larger lens quite nice, and keep it handy for ready access.
The cobra strap could be solved with putting the buckle elsewhere on their part easily and I think it'd solve that great. I'd love one of these bags in the 17", but that price point is prohibitively expensive for a soft shell bag for me. They are insanely functional, but I use a pelican case as is to protect my current laptop and such, I'd be afraid to just drop it in one of these lol. The 13 would work for general gear, if it was about half the price.
I bought a walmart special it's a 15, I think it was $35 about 5 yrs ago? padding isn't great but I used it exclusively for school. Now it's an EDC I use for work. It's been abused but no tears, the zippers are good and it's functional. Currently looking for an EDC outside of work, 17 looks good, but I'm not into velcro and the price....I remember when velcro was considered cheap. I'm still in that camp. But overall, a good review
Sure wish there was a 15 size. I measured my laptop and looked at the full dimensions on Vanquest's website and it's about an inch too long. Don't feel bad about the delay of your review. The timing for the review aligns with time that we might need such a bag if our elected "parents" will let us go out and play again soon.
I actually might get one of these for college. What’s really getting my attention is they can carry a friggin nalgene cause I almost always have mine within 3 feet of me at all times
Oh wow. I make it a point to never buy anything new until the old one breaks or becomes unusable... This is really making me hope my old bag breaks soon lol
As a guy that used to work in the industrial sewing/medical-first responder bag industry, I am pretty sure you are speaking about 1000 D Cordura, and not "ten thousand" D. Just sayin. Ok, from thier website "we use ultra-durable 1000-D Cordura® nylon"
Hey there, as much as I really enjoy your content, I will be leaving RUclips. Sure I’m just one guy, but I hope others including yourself will make a stand against the totalitarianism and censorship we are now seeing from big tech. I hope have success but sincerely hope to see your channel elsewhere, gab.tv or bitchute etc.
I have the 17 and carried daily for 4 years. Still looks brand new. Also the lifetime warranty is amazing
I’m always down for a good bag review!

wish you would attach a listing of the various add on accessory pouches etc and where to get them.....
Go to Vanquest's site, they're all there with current prices :)
Nick, can't find the 17 in stock anywhere. Do you have a hook up?

Is it really a standard US sized arm? Wouldn't that make the hands comically small on the end of the arms? So many questions...
Also known as a cubit (ancient measure).
I would be curious to see your review of some of the Wotancraft bags (I have two and really like them)
What's your feeling about having one large compartment, like the GORUCK style vs a multi pocket carrier like this?
I’ve carried the 17 daily for about 2 years. No complaints at all.

Nice bags ,different color options would be great 👍.
Can you buy extra pockets for it?

I love my Envoy 13 too and have it with me every day!

Hey nick do you review backpacks/sling packs for edc?
No protection on the sides against water ingress during rain.

Do you still carry the Goruck backpack more?

Nick Shabazz: I wonder what new knives Spyderco has?
Spyderco: No knives, but we have some new bags.
Nick Shabazz: You Son Of A Bitch, I'm In!
Will the 17inch one take a 16" laptop?
Takes a 16" MacBookPro well.
I've the envoy 13 (no spyderco edition) for job from 2 years and I can say that is the BEST MESSENGER TACTICAL BAG EVER!
I dont have the spyderco edition but I have the envoy 13 and I love it! I have the cobra strap on it and I use the dividers. Its an amazing edc bag!
I've never even considered the need for an envoy-type bag and now I feel like I've been screwing up my entire life.
Where I live fashion isn't even a thing. This bag is awesome!
Yeah but do they have any pockets ?
I would really be interested if I had any use for it at all. I just don't carry a lap top on a daily basis
I dont own a laptop, but I could see these working well as a camera bag for photo-proffesionals. Those end drink container spots would take on a larger lens quite nice, and keep it handy for ready access.
Exactly how I feel. Nothing at work comes back and forth for me.

The 13 would be great whenever commuting to work is relevant again. Unfortunately it is closer to 260$ here in Germany.

Don’t fear the nature get out and enjoy it!!
Check out the new Gofer 15 from the same company.
I like them but I like my Saddleback Leather messenger more ... you are a true 💎!
Are they better than a NutSac?
My question also. Maybe addressing a different issue. This bag might be better as a travel bag vs everyday bag.
You will make the Spyderco logo stealthy.. on a "tactical" style bag with MOLLE/PALS attachment points and velcros for morale patches :-)
Definitely should review that Mora Knife (Chisel?) in the background.
I'm a carpenter, and that's always part of my toolbelt ;P
Stay safe, Nick!
I actually might get one of these for college. What’s really getting my attention is they can carry a friggin nalgene cause I almost always have mine within 3 feet of me at all times
$160.00 Another spiderco knife or another bag I won't use? Shit now I have to get both.
Great review!
1:08 - The bag is larger than a pocketknife, so I can't use it..
Hey some people just don't matter seriously their opinions mean literally nothing at all these bags are awesome!! Regardless of who think what😇😇
I'm not a fan of the molle and morale patch field exterior on an EDC bag, but that looks awesome otherwise
Should have presented the 17 more.
Says uploaded them minutes ago but i see comments from 6 days ago. Wut

10,000 CORDURA! Yeah, my apologies.
7:03 the Batman mask
👍👍👍👍👍
Reeeeeally not used to seeing so much pastey arm footage in your review videos. Nice hands though!😬🙃
Well if it’s bigger than a pocket knife I don’t want it!!!
Seems a little too bulky for me...
Check e.g. the Timbuk2 classic messenger, by the default it is much slimmer but still large capacity (the bottom of it can be adjusted with straps)
500 D cordura
And.... your accent is... real...? Not from the 1930s?
Looks very chintzy and gimmicky.
I'm very happy with my Tenba DNA, for photography and EDC.
Standard U.S. ARM! 🤣🤣🤣
