This scene is so eerie. Makes me wonder how many young men across America gathered at the local bars, VFW halls, and other places, playing games, singing, patting each other on the back, joyful with not a care in the world, not knowing what horrors awaited them far from home. A joyful, yet sad, moment, repeated endless times by so many boys.

Every dude relates to this scene. That group of 3, 4, 5 or as in here, maybe 6 guys who are tight that you got together with for drinks, laughs, pick up games, cottage weekends and so on. From the late teens to mid 20s you shared it all and you can't remember how you were able to afford it. You argued from time to time and someone was always the asshead (guy who started fights when out, etc) but you had incredible times together and have the nicknames or scares to back it up. You still see each other from time to time but its just a tad different. (jobs, family, kids, new location - the responsibilities of life) But that bond that you shared together is deep and its something you truly wish you had again. True Friends. Our similar tune and moment like this. It's early 90's and the four of us leaving a club around 2am feeling no pain, into the one car our friend has and we're hungry so we drive to the one part of town where you know you can get a good bite to eat rather cheap. The radio is on (couldn't afford cassette or CD in in the car) and on comes Jet by Paul McCartney and the Wings. Four voices singing the harmony to this day never sounded or stayed with me better. That's what this scene means to me.

The entire beginning of the movie paralleled my own life . Smoke stack town . The town I grew up in was polish but a lot like this Russian Orthodox church and wedding. we even had our wedding reception in a American Legion Hall . The old ladies acting the same . Deer hunting with my friends. And my wife said to me, that bar scene with them singing was just exactly like you and your boys .
We probably had about 25 guys go to Vietnam from my area in those years and believe it or not we did not lose one guy. They all came home but some had thier share of problems .

I was a teenager in the UK when the Vietnam War was on, and I thought then what a waste of life for these young men, and the lack of support when they survived and got back home. I saw this film when it came out in the late 70s, and the war has not been that long ago. I was so upset, knowing what these guys went through. My father was in the RAF during WW2, and he thought that war was to end all wars. My father was terminally ill at the time of Vietnam, and even though he was here in the UK, I could see my dad`s eyes welling up for these young men.

In case nobody said it already, it was a great touch after this to cast Walken in "Jersey Boys" as the local man of respect.

One of the only times I ever did karaoke, I did "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and it ended up playing out a tad similar to this scene. It was in a bar, alcohol flowing, some people playing pool, and people singing along to Frankie Vallie.

    • @shimmeringfairydust3275

Well, John Williams, the Aussie guitarist who plays it in the movie, didn’t actually write it. Stanley Myers did, but Williams expanded upon his version to make it the song we all know & love. I wonder if this John Williams is related to the same named American - who wrote the score for “Star Wars,” “Jaws” and almost every best loved score since the 1970s. They are both incredibly talented.

I just finished rewatching Jersey Boys...with CHRISTOPHER WALKEN as Gyp DeCarlo...the mob boss who mentored Frankie Valli.
then to see this a very young Walken singing to this song.... that's just great.

Well I love this song...and this scene always pop into my head when I hear this song...Christopher Walken is this songs scene, but I agree that noone touch De Niro in this film. But both are always a reason to look at a film even if you dont know if it's good or not. Real actors can make any movie interesting....and this was probaly one of the best movies ever...in a top 20 chart anyway.

Yes... One of the few. The following were more of a reminder of the effing results.
'Nam was a Cluster F... Same with Iraq. Deal with the stupid, mindless loss your county caused or will cause you "patriots". See how the US will treat you when you come back maimed or mind-effed from some other idiocy they pull. Be forewarned future "heroes".

legendary & well acted movie, but looking back at this iconic scene, this is really 70’s hair on these guys, when it was supposed to be taking place in the 60’s. I know, I know everyone thinks of long hair with the 60s but that hair fashion, along with other fads, didn’t trickle down to these country/hill folk until a bit later on.
