Seems you didn't get the snow that the Weather Channel showed for most of your state. I am grateful to you sharing your activities with us and I can appreciate the extra work it causes: One sees the horses leaving from the site, arriving at the landing etc, which means somebody must have put the camera/ the cameras at different places. Since I assume Brenda is not around all the time as she is a nurse, if I recall correctly, you must be doing a lot of extra walking to set everything up. Thank you!
This is Brenda, yes he does do a lot of work himself. Especially lately, he has been moving the camera all over and getting most of this footage himself to get all the different angles. And yes, it is a lot of work. But he does seem to enjoy it. Thank you for watching and for your support!
I just found your channel and loved it. Am subscribing so I can watch more of your horses working! I love draft horses. I was always around quarter horses, but I love big Belgians. They're like gentle giants. I hope the issue with Lady turning improves and nothing is seriously wrong. Read all the comments for possible problems. Since you're the one around them and working them, you will find out the problem without all of RUclips trying to figure it out for you!😉 They sure are a pretty team!
I used to do a little horse training (quarter horses) and a little patience goes a long way, huh? They, to me,are just like children. Love the way you handle yours.
Living is a farm is a great pleasure .. but boy it is hard work !!!... i grew up in farm and I wont change it for anything else ...but we did work hard every day .. god bless all the farm people !!
Couldn't see a thing wrong in your video. Lovely Horses. Have to save that trailer for your cattle and get a much larger one for those big beautiful draft. Keep up the good work. Wyoming Jim
Check ladys eye Jim. If her neck isn’t sore n she turns left when hitched. I’d think it’s something ailing her not resistance per say , just a thought ? Solid team of horses , always impressive seeing them side by side working 👌
Hopefully its just a neck sprain. Her neck seems soft and pliable when she turns to the right, but she seems to compensate with footwork to avoid flexing her neck when she turns to the left. Like others have said, it could be vision, but that seems less likely. Maybe some Absorbene Jr. and a couple days rest will help?
What I'm wondering is, may she have some inflammation going on along her right side and the added stretching causing her discomfort, or maybe needing a chiropractic adjustment? Good looking horses.
She relaxed with repetition so if it do to soreness it might lessen with being worked. I would suggest alternating anyway which way you bring her out she may have some soreness from injury or arthritis. I prefer backing my guys out of my trailer since allowing them to turn “winds them up a bit”. You have a hames issue with that solution so could you harness them at the site which I understand is probably more work since you have to put the harness in the trailer before you leave. Alternatively can you shorten your hames? As long as you don’t hitch 2 and 2 in a 4 up you don’t need the top ring on the hames and can drop them 2 inches. Some European styles of hames don’t have the upper ball but I don’t know if they could be substituted into your harness and new hames are expensive. I wish I could train my all guys to stand that quietly when hitched! Nice team.
Have you ever tried putting a minimum/maximum battery operated thermometer in your trailer on a cold day going down the road to see what it feels like to the horses? Since it is indoor/outdoor, you can monitor 2 sections of the trailer. You can also do a test with the horses together and apart. You might also caulk holes in the front of the trailer to minimize wind and also truck exhaust. Perhaps Lady is starting to go blind in that one eye. That would make her reluctant to turn in a direction she can't see. Hitched up, she may rely on Bill.
No I haven’t put a thermometer in there. Thanks for the vision suggestion but she seems to be the most watchful and more alert one of the two- always looking around in both directions
👍getting caught up on videos this morning. I find i do things a certain way (park vehicles, equipment, load trucks, etc.) do to previous life experiences. Been thinking of Lady and my thought of her left hind leg. I bet you she pulled a muscle in her ankle, watching the way she turns lot of pressure on it!!!!
She might be having a physical issue like a neck, shoulder muscle strain, or it could be her vision on that side might be blurry or altered from an unknown issue. Even a slightly bruised frog can cause horses to avoid that leg.
Merry Christmas Jim and family. I listening about Lady's behavior I began to wonder if she might be experiencing any hearing or sight loss on her left side? I could certainly be way off my rocker, but those were the first things that crossed my mind.
Thanks, Merry Christmas! It’s unlikely it’s an eye problem, because it started immediately and not overtime. I would assume an eye issue would gradually get worse. But I’ll check it out
My horse has a leading side - like my shoer says they are naturally either right handed or left handed just like us. If you were to let her choose her own way out instead of leading her you would find her natural leading side. It could then just be that she is stuck. Also, using positive reinforcement such as a treat after she complies with your request to use her non-leading side could also compensate her enough to make a difference. Going over all your own moves might give you a clue as to what you did extra that soured her to that ask. Just a few things that came to mind. Good luck and hope the extra unloads you showed did the trick.
Nice job. I would have stopped the Belgium just to the left at an angle there in the trailer and just let it stand there for a second or two to show the horse that there's nothing going to hurt it. Love your logging videos

@Working Horses With Jim ... love watching you work your team, such a neat thing to see as it’s history that is slowly dwindling from the world. On a side note, where do you get your draft blankets?
Glad you were able to work through the issues with Lady. I am sure it will be sleighing season soon. We have about a foot of snow here. How does that old freezer work for storing feed? How long have you been able to store feed that way? Thanks for sharing.
Yes, sounds like you got a lot of snow. We wish we would’ve got some of it. We just got a dusting. The freezer works great for storing oats, since we have some little critters around that like to chew holes in the bags!
I wonder if she bumped into something and thereby has a sore spot that is not an issue unless she turns that way? I don't know if there is such a muscle, but the things that happen to your team when you are not looking (and it can happen anywhere!) are always going to be there. Beautiful team, and so obviously they are a team, familiar with each other and comfortable like an old married couple!

I have heard of people feeding oats that have been soaked in molasses. Is that something you would buy or something that people make for themselves? Thx.
Alkaline batteries lose power rapidly below zero. Lithium batteries will continue to provide usable power even well below zero. I use Energizer Ultimate lithium batteries in AA. They also have AAA. I use them in all my deer trail cams. More expensive but they work better. Any AA or AAA rechargeable just don't have the voltage to begin with and are unsuitable in cold weather.

How tall is your trailer I’m getting into draft horses I have a regular size stock trailer at 6 foot 6 inches I’m jw if they will fit ? Or is yours taller ? Thanks
Just a suggestion for storing and carrying your chains. May be a little tough with the limited space on your “chariot” as I call it. You are like Ben Hur to me. Kyle at RR Builders uses a bucket with a lid with a hole cut in lid. Use an appropriate smallest size bucket for each chain. Tie something on end of chain so it does not fall into the bucket. You can pull the chain in and out of the bucket and it won’t get tangled. If I can find his video where he shows it and figure out how to put in link I will. Maybe you could screw 3 small 1 gal buckets on the back rail of the seat. As I think about it ... if the hook you showed on the end of the chain is only in one end then that will stop chain from falling into the bucket. Just make the hole big enough for the chain and not the hook. It may not be an issue for you since your chains are not very long but it worked really good for the other RUclipsr because he was using pretty long lengths of chain. Hopefully the peanut gallery doesn’t rain all over my suggestion 😂 As for poor Lady, I am way out of my depth on giving any suggestions there. Wish the poor girl well and hope she has no real problem underlying the issue. When you were in the forest you can tell the ground is frozen solid by the sound of the horses hoofs when they hit the ground

It actually looked like she wouldn't fit at all and she walked right in there.
MERRY Christmas 🎄 MGBYAAIJNA 😎
Thanks! You too!
wish I could help, but I don't have enough of a trained eye, to be of any help.
I have heard of people feeding oats that have been soaked in molasses. Is that something you would buy or something that people make for themselves? Thx.
I think it’s something you’d have to make for yourself, I know some people do
If you stall her all the time, try turning her out where she can roll. Rolling is a horse's chiropractor.
She goes out to pasture quite often. That's true about the rolling!
My horse happily loaded into the cattle truck. He could see out. Lots of room.
Left eye issue?
Wont turn? Sore muscle?
Have a Bowen therapist or Physiotherapist work on Lady, it sounds like she has pulled or strained something
Is there a reason why you run rib tires on your cart ?
They are an odd tire, and they were the easiest ones to get.
May have bumped her head. The first few times she ducked away from the wall when turning around.
She's just decided "i've had enough of turning your way, I'm turning My way now and I'm stuburn
That could very well be it
Nothing worse than a stubborn female !! Tee Hee !!
Thanks for the tip!
Do you use Canadian oats?
Rolled? Blown?
Just local Whole oats
How many hours do you work your horses in the woods?
Varies but less than 8
Have you checked her vision in the left eye?
No, but she seems to always be looking in both directions. She seems to have really good vision
Have you checked her back for stiffness.. maybe pinched nerve..etc
I have not ,I don’t doubt that might be the problem but we don’t have a chiropractor for horses around here that we can call on
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim thats no good.. with mine we wrapped his tail ( hair only of course) round a very secure top rail ..then asked horse to walk forward..one step.was all that was needed..by securing his tail this pulled his back into line..understand if you dont want to try it..
Sounds like you know what you’re talking about, but I don’t so I’d be scared to try it but thanks for the info
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim I watched carefully when it ws done to one of my horses..but I fully understand where your coming from and I would wait as well..best wishes..
Being that Lady thinks since she has room on either side that she thinks she can just turn around and go out front ways. Sometimes we take the easy way out no pun intended
How tall is your trailer I’m getting into draft horses I have a regular size stock trailer at 6 foot 6 inches I’m jw if they will fit ? Or is yours taller ? Thanks
I don't know your family name, but, given that green tuque and that green neck thing, are you of irsh origin?
I don’t so, my father’s family came from Scotland. The colors I was wearing are just incidental
@@WorkingHorsesWithJim See ...
How do your horses handle a bit in very cold conditions?
They do ok, warming it up before putting it in the mouth helps a lot
Maybe she's hurt her neck or withers & experiences pain turning to the left? Chiropractor?
Could be, unfortunately we don't have a horse chiropractor close by
It's in her neck. Like she's tight on the right so she's hitting both front and back.
how many hands are these horses query
16-2 to 17 hands
👍
You should convince your daughters to do a Christmas song concert video.
Thanks for the idea
Hopefully the peanut gallery doesn’t rain all over my suggestion 😂
As for poor Lady, I am way out of my depth on giving any suggestions there.
Wish the poor girl well and hope she has no real problem underlying the issue.
When you were in the forest you can tell the ground is frozen solid by the sound of the horses hoofs when they hit the ground
Yes I think it might be hard with my limited space though, thank you for your suggestions. It might be a great thing to store in my truck though.
Could she be having a problem with her left eye?
Must be the harness
I don't know why but her rear left leg seems like something is going on.?
Jim, Are you using 12 ft. long chains and what size?
Yes, 5/16
Just wondering.. I'm on Cape Cod With 4 inches of snow.. Your in Up State New York with bare Ground!! I Love you guys, but how about sharing the secret....
He is near the St Lawrence river and Lake Ontario far from the usual path of northeaster. A former resident of the Mohawk Valley now in Louisville Kentucky
Yes we often miss the snow, especially before Christmas when people really want sleigh rides. But we usually get a fair amount later in the season
lady might need a chiropractic adjustment, or have a sore muscle, or eye issues, hope you find a solution. Thanks for the videos, I am learning a lot about working with draft horses from you. Maybe rub her, a massage, or hire some one to do it, she looks stiff on one side.
Thanks for the suggestions and glad you find the vids helpful
Glad you are enjoying the videos. Thank you for the suggestions
