Pronouncation of Lam Alef
Lam Alef in Arabic, which is used similar to the definite article “the”, is an article placed in the begining of the word but it is not part of the word. The pronounciation of Lam Alef has the following rules.:
1. When the letter before Lam Alef has a harakah, the Hamzah (Alef with a harakah) of the Lam Alef is not pronounced.: وَالْحَقُ=Wal-haggu , وَالْقَدِ يْمُ =Wal kadêmu
2. When one of the letters from Huruf u Gamar, ا ب ج ح خ ع غ ف ق ك م و هـ ى follows the Lam of Lam Alef, then the Lam الْ is pronounced with jazm, which is called Ez’har u Qamareyya. The Huruf u Qamar are the letters that compose the following words.:
اَبْغِ, حَجَّكَ, وَخْفَ, عَقِيمَهُ
وَالْمُقِيْمُ =wal mugêmu , بِاالْبَاطِلِ =be l bâtele
3. When any of the Huruf u Shams ت ث د ذ رس ش ص ض ط ظ ل ن follows the Lam Alef, the Lam is not pronounced at all and the letter that follows الْ is pronounced with shaddah. This is called Edgham u Shamseyya.
بِادَّ لِيلِ =Bed dalêle, وَالطِّفْلُ =wa’t teflu
