    I can really recommend Thrustmaster Hotas 4 joystick for X-Plane 11 VR (same as I'm using) if you dont want to use the VR controllers. Grab it here: amzn.to/2FJmhQh
    Thanks for supporting my channel, guys!

      Concur. While I haven't tried the Warthog, I know that it's not 10 times better than this version, but it definitely is 10 times more expensive :) Seems to work great and fine. Upgrade later and start with this one.

      I'm currently using this as well. However, it's definitely not the best. You really can;t separate the quadrants much at all, if you wanted to mount them on different sides of the chair and route the cable somewhere, this is not the best bet. Also the throttle has a detent and a deadzone at 50% which can become slightly annoying. IMO, if you know you're a flight simmer and will use the hardware, get the Thrustmaster T16000m

      Thank you Juilien, Im so happy to hear that :) Its one of those videos I really only do for you all XP11 VR fans, and it doesn't matter how much time it takes to complete. You need to know those tweaks :) Its a video that wont ever get many views, but those of you that care will probably appreciate it. Sure, take your time. The j3FPS plugin and the Lasso Process gives the biggest boost, its quite amazing. In NY city with custom scenery, it more than doubled my frame rate! Cheers

    Nvidia Threaded Optimization ON is actually the new preferred setting since 11.3x at least (gain a few fps over being off).

    Mate, this finally made me able to use my RIFT in X-Plane 11. My god it looks amazing and after hours and hours of garbage ideas online and tutorials you fixed my stuttering.
    I have a 1080Ti and it was just a stutter mess, now I can lock in 45FPS with some settings on high/maximum and play smooth in the glorious VR. I love you!

    Great vid sir!
    1.I’ve bought two lighthouses, and cannot track either with my Pimax 5K+
    2. My Ebay Vive controller is stuck 180° in the X dimension… In other words when the laser should be pointing into the screen at the VR Screen options, it’s pointing directly at me… Any ideas?
    3. Have you figured out how to smooth out the shuddering in OBS OpenVR Capture Plugin?
    Thanks
    Chas

    Thank you so much SweViver for this incredible optimization guide. The amount of work behind this must have been insane. The researching as well as presenting and creating this in-depth tutorial for us to use and get a solid experience is truly amazing, and I'm so thankful for this contribution. I still haven't tried X-Plane 11, so this is even more fantastic, that I will get a solid first impression and experience through this guide. Thank you so much for sharing and caring SweViver. :)

Those tweaks, especially the Lasso software and that j3FPS plugin really does magic in terms of performance in VR! :) Im sure you will get addicted in XP11 VR as soon as you try it! And dont fly around in the default scenery, there is tons of free scenery that looks truly awesome, just like all stuff from MisterX6 (just google it). Have fun up in the air! :)

    There's a bit of misinformation at 2:45. Oculus has TWO methods of interpolation. Asynchronous Time Warp (ATW) and Asynchronous Space Warp (ASW). Neither "double your framefrate". The VR hardware wants frame data fed to it every 11ms (90fps). If the sim is unable to sustain 90fps then without ATW and ASW, you would get a freeze until the next frame came in which would feel very jerky. Both ATW and ASW allow the driver to make guesses about what the frame could/should have looked like based on the motion of your head and the previous frame(s) data. ATW compensates for translation motion (moving your head around). ASW compensates for rotational motion (twisting your head). Without ASW, you would STILL have ATW keeping things smooth...it would just be less accurate with its predictions if you were to rotate your head rapidly. It's true the Vive does not have ASW but it does have asynchronous reprojection which is roughly their equivalent of Oculus's ATW. So ASW is not dramatically improving performance, it's simply making slightly better predictions.

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you very much for your in-depth explanation Chris, I really appreciate it as I have definitely learned something new today! I actually thought Oculus only used a ASW reprojection, but now after your explanation I finally understand how it works.
      Indeed, I should correct myself here. As you say, the performance is not better on Rift compared to Vive, but the ASW gives us the "feeling" of a more smooth experience thanks to the way it reprojects, not only the head rotational movements but also the rest of the image. I really hope HTC/Valve can make a similar solution, as I personally thing Asynchronous Reprojection is not even close in terms of smoothness when framedrops occur, especially with games with free movement, flying or racing.
      Anyway, big thanks for this - much appreciated! Greetings from Sweden :)

    amazing walkthrough on all these steps!!!!
    What CPU cooler are you using?
    I also have an i7 8700k and a gtx 1080ti, but my CPU temps are WAYYYYYY high, like 80C+ when playing xplane in VR... I realize I probably need a better water cooler but I'm not sure how much is needed. currently installed is the corsair H60... i'm looking to upgrade to the H110 or H115i..... thanks again!!!!

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад

      Thank you very much Tim :)
      I know, the 8700K is really a hot CPU unfortunately. Im running it with a watercooled AIO (NZXT Kraken x62) and at 4.9Ghz on full load it still can spike around 75 or even 80 sometimes when benchmarking. Its crazy! While running XP11 VR its usually on 60-65 degrees or less as this simulator wont max the CPU anyway. I would recommend you to invest in a 280mm AIO like the H115i or Kraken x62, or even better :) Cheers and thanks for watching!

    • @timmeijome
      @timmeijome 6 лет назад +1

      I had no idea I needed such a large AIO water cooler!!!! haha!! the 280mm won't fit in my current case, so I'm going to try with the H100iv2 240mm. thanks again for the great videos! :)
      also, I found in a different video something that is giving me quite a good performance improvement on XP11 and you might want to try it. you go into windows defender security center, virus and threat protection, then turn off real-time protection while playing xp11. try it out!

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад

      240mm should be enough as well, no problem. Just dont go for those small 140 ones :)

    Excellent tutorial! Can't wait for your tpcast oculus/vive how to use one router/software for both! BTW I wasn't able to get tpcast vive v1.1.4 running, still using version 1.1.2.0 w/no problems....just wondering why v1.1.4 can't get past last step on startup and of course the need for tracking optimization w/tpcast Oculus ( you said to place tpcast in between oculus sensors two and three, which I have not gotten to yet ) anyway have a nice one SweViver!

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you very much man! :) Oh, damn I totally forgot to make that video! I will try to have it done this week, but I cant promise yet...
      Hmm thats strange. Make sure to go into European-tab on their website if you have the EU version, as there seems to be different versions for EU/US. Im using the latest Vive software for both Vive and Rift and it works fine. The last step on startup will never work for Rift, when using the Vive software. Thats because its looking for some Vive-features, but the Rift image and everything works great anyway. The TPCAST software will retry and retry in a endless loop, but meanwhile you can play for hours :) Thats why its possible to use the Vive software with Rift TPCAST. Its not 100% perfect, but it works 100% at least :)

    Hi great vid. You said you have to use Steam VR for VR to work on X Plane 11, but that is not the case with Oculus (it runs without, actually I got slightly better frames without, although I didn't install the one you suggested). Is it still best to use Steam VR as you described or go without for Oculus?

  • @arensel84

    SweViver, I was going to get the Pimax, but went with Samsung for now. Glad I did, my 8700k and 1080ti struggle to get 90 FPS in DCS. Most often it sits at 45 when low to the ground. I don’t see how a VR headset with twice the resolution of the Samsung will perform any better until the next generation GTX Ti top line card is out. When I set my super sampling at 2 or 2.5 it looks amazingly sharp and clear at cost to FPS however. Racing and flight sims will be amazing when 90 FPS and graphics on par with a good monitor are achieved.

      Hey mate! I see your point, and congratulations on your new Odyssey headset, I sure you will have loads of fun with it! :)
      I actually have the Odyssey as well since a few days ago, but I have not even unboxed it yet...
      Having that said, I think you should know thath PImax 8K is using the same input resolution for games as the Odyssey does. Its not a native 4K image being rendered. The image is being internally upscaled by a chip in the headset, from 1440p to 4K, so in terms of performance, there should be no difference (or at least almost none difference) at all :)

    Thanks a lot for making this tutorial! Most of the things you've mentioned are - at least for me - not new, but you made the effort to summarize and put all these things together. Thank you! One thing I would like to know, regardless of all these tweaks: How much difference are the fps from X-Plane with FlyInside plugin to X-Plane with native VR? Has native VR really better fps from ground up? I do not use the latest beta with native VR yet. I'm still on v11.11 with FlyInside, so I cannot compare. Thanks a lot in advance!

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад

      Thanks mate :) Yeah most of the stuff in this tutorial are no news for many people, but I hope some people will find it useful :)
      Actually, I never tried FlyInside with X Plane 11 to be honest :) I actually thing FlyInside has some better performance from what I could read in forums, but the big thing with this native VR support is the ability to use the VR controllers :) You should really give the beta a try, flying with "hands" is adding a lot to the immersion! Cheers

    • @luftbilderhd
      @luftbilderhd 6 лет назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for your reply. I'm very curious about native VR support. I will wait until beta is over and it's officially released. I can bearly believe that a plugin (FlyInside) is more FPS-friendly than native support. We will see.
      I did a few more tests the last few days (with XP11 and FlyInside). With FlyInside you can choose between different resolutions which will be displayed in the Oculus Rift. I set it to the highest resolution (approximately 3800 pixels wide) and set Super Sampling in Oculus Tray Tool to "0". I was very surprised about the result because this gave me about 10 to 15 (!) fps more with the same rendering settings in the same scenery. I the beginning as I started to use X-Plane with Oculus Rift I tweaked FlyInside settings to go beyond its maximum resolution (simply by editing the .ini file) to about 4100 pixels (wide). As we can see, in this case tweaking makes things worse. Although there is a difference of only about 200 pixels, going back to FlyInsides stock settings is the best decision I could do. So every system and installation is very individual and "sensible". ;-)

    • @luftbilderhd
      @luftbilderhd 6 лет назад

      Oh, and I forgot to mention that switching off "draw shadows on scenery" is not an option for me. I do VFR and low altitude flights most of the time (primarily helicopters) and switching off shadows makes it not real. It makes it really bad and unnatural. Loosing fps to get it more natural with shadows is absolutely worth it in my opinion.

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад

      Oh I see, very interesting, thanks for the info! Yeah, tweaking is not always helping out hehe. Im sure the performance will improve a lot in the native VR version soon with more updates. The devs seems to work very hard to improve it as they have realized how much VR improves this simulator in terms of immersion. Lets hope we can finally get those 90fps in the final version :)

    • @luftbilderhd
      @luftbilderhd 6 лет назад

      Hi! One more thing I would like to mention regarding fps tweaking: There is even more you can do. You can edit the settings.ini file in X-Planes preferences folder as well. Please have a look at this: ruclips.net/video/eLaDemEsSPk/видео.html The video is in german, but I think you'll understand what's the point. In the discription there is a download link as well containing different settings file types. I haven tried them yet. I am currently quite happy with my (VR) setup.

  • @luftbilderhd
    @luftbilderhd 6 лет назад

    Hi there! So, after a few months after our little conversation in the comments section of this video I am back. Meanwhile a few things have changed. I have a new rig (i7 7700k@4.4 GHz and GTX 1080) and native VR support has been officially released, currently with version 11.20r4. In the past I had similar tweaks as you explain in your video here, but now the things are different.
    To keep things short: Regarding fps in VR less tweaking is more efficient.
    First of all you need a good CPU, of course. Your 8700k has more cores, but I suppose that the 7700 has better single-core performance, which is important for flight sims (as long as there is no Vulcan support). But you are right, you have to learn to set up your BIOS and make the right settings there. Of course SteamVR is not needed anymore as well. If anybody has installed it only for X-Plane, you can uninstall it now when using Oculus Rift.
    I use X-Plane for helicopter and low altitude flights most of the time, which is much more demanding on performance than IFR flights or flights in high altitudes. My new finding is, that high fps (in your case you are talking about approximately 45 fps) is not necessary for fluid gameplay in VR.
    I did the following:
    First of all you should test in a crowded area with high object/building density. In my case I did my tests in the region of the city of Munich, Germany, starting at EDNX, heading southeast over and around Munich. I use default autogen with custom scenery "Enriched Autogen", no other w2xp sceneries, no orthophotos or stuff like that. And I use the great HD v4 mesh of AlpilotX.
    In X-Plane graphic settings I've set "number of objects" to maximum (highest setting), "draw shadows on scenery" to "on" (yes! This is very important when flying low or VFR, otherwise the entire scenery would look "flat"), the upper left slider I've set one notch down to "HDR", textures are as well one notch down on "high", antialiasing is set to "off" (= "none"), reflections are set to minimum (the very lowest setting), parked aircrafts are off because I use World Traffic v3. Regarding antialiasing I let Nvidia Control Panel do the job and set it to "FXAA = on".
    I use Oculus Debug Tool to set the scaling to 1.3, which is - in combination with Nvidias FXAA - absolutely enough for me to read the gauges etc. And I use Oculus Debug Tool to set the ASW reprojection to "off" (= "disabled"). This is the most important thing to get fluid graphics in X-Plane, independent of computing power. You can use Oculus Debug Tool on the fly while X-Plane is running. Every setting/change you make has an immediate effect.
    Then I rejected some things. I removed Process Lasso (I have the Pro version as well). I was glad to see that this had no negative effect regarding VR performance. Thus Process Lasso is not needed anymore. After that I removed (not disabled) the latest version of 3jFPS wizard. And this did the trick! Obviously native X-Plane (I'm talking about v11.20r4) has some built-in "on-the-fly" optimizations under the hood regarding fps in VR. With 3jFPS wizard enabled (and I played around with it a very long time to find a good setting for me) the fps jumped around, far objects (esp. high buildings) in the distance were not visible, no or only a few cars on the roads etc. In short: It made things and visual appearance worse. Obviously there is even more computing power needed for this LUA script to keep or reach the desired fps. Or 3jFPS wizard is fighting against X-Planes built-in optimizations when calculating each frame. So I recommend to get rid of it if you have a powerful CPU and GPU. It might be helpful on lower end machines.
    In summary: Without 3jFPS wizard and with Oculus ASW disabled I get stable 23 fps (sometimes it drops to 22 fps, but recovers to 23 fps) in areas with high object density - and it is enough! It is really enough! Give it a try! It is fluid and smooth, and big cities look amazing with "number of objects" set to maximum! In areas with less object density fps are higher of course. I think 3jFPS wizard is more (and only) helpful on older machines with less computing power.
    It is highly recommended for everyone to tweak less and give native X-Plane a try!

An Intel i5 is well enough I think, as the simulator only uses single core performance. You could try overclocking it a bit also! Cheers and welcome to the world of VR! :)

      Thank you for your reply! Well, having now set it up and flown in the Rift, all I can say is UNBELIEVABLE. No, its not perfect, and a little grainy, but what an experience. How do you explain it to people? It is amazing NOW, but as it improves, I think this is revolutionary.

      Yep, it indeed is amazing. Thing is, its very difficult to explain this to people that never tried VR. I think Virtual Reality is something everyone needs to try before they understand the power of it :) Im happy you are enjoying your Rift. Indeed its wfar from perfect but this is just the beginning of the VR revolution! Have fun now and thank you too for the reply :)

      Thats true mate. Of course it kind of depends how you are flying. If you only want to ply low altitude around cities like I did here to demonstrate the beauty of this simulator and to show the FPS difference, of course its going to be better with max buildings and objects, but as you point out, its quite unnecessary if you fly on higher altitudes and the buildings gets cut away by the low LOD anyway :) Most of the time I set world objects to High which is more than enough for regular flight sessions.

    Thank you. This video helped me optimize graphical settings and get desired frame rate. I did run into one issue with your instructions on project lasso. I did not see any vrcompsitor file so I could not disable the cores in the second step you described. Since that was the case I had to totally shelve using this software. I had the game running and searched for this file in both active and recent processes with no luck (steam VF/oculus). Not sure why that is. Maybe it’s different file name in newer versions of game? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again for producing this excellent video!

    What is the point of setting buildings to max to then have a plug in that hides them?
    Just turn amount of buildings down and you would get the same fps increase no?
    You can get a similar effect by using the X plane settings plugin and switching off HDR for huge fps boost but lowered LOD.
    Good vid though.

    I was getting frustrated stuck at 25fps with low graphic settings with my rift s, i59600k (overclocked to just below 5ghz) and my Nvidia rtx2070. Some of the steps in this video helped but the biggest eureka moment was turning off virtual mouse in Xplane settings which I don’t need on vr planes. FPS pretty much doubled and even turning up graphics and supersampling didn’t affect FPS too much. Not sure why virtual mouse hits FPS so much but I’m running about 45fps vr now and that’s smooth enough for me!!

    I've been interested in these smoother plugins but I just got results I'm very happy with on the vive with an amd rx580 by changing the graphics settings in the radeon control center for x-plane to texture filter : performance basic default everything else, and changing the in game anistrophic filtering to 16x looked really good and gave like 0 fps drop. I'm getting a smooth 45 at least, it's probably like a smooth 60, not 90 though. I don't look at fps, I give the hand wave test, just wave your controller in front of your face quickly, if it looks like a natural blur that's 90, if it changes consistency it's not a steady frame rate. Probably only works with amazing lighthouse tracking but it works well. Unfortunately nothing works better than setting the render resolution to 70% in the vive settings for xplane... works though

      About XP11, you need to opt into the beta, and then start the game WITHOUT SteamVR on. Start the game, go into Settings and VR Settings. Click the "Enable VR mode" and XP11 will start SteamVR and show up in your headset. Unfortunately SteamVR needs to be closed when starting up XP11 every time :)

    Thanks m8, I'm of the opinion that if you have a 1080ti and an i7 8700k yet still have to make a 40 minute video about how to get it working properly, it's not a game I will be buying yet.
    I realise of course as an old school gamer that tweaking is a requirement for a sub standard rig or a pc below the games minimum requirements. However when you have this hardware and still have to mess about, at that point it's down to their lack of optimisation and I'm not paying good money for that :)

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks for your input mate! Yeah, I fully agree. This sim needs a lot of optimization to be made by the developers. Its quite unacceptable in this current state. But have in mind its just a first VR Preview/Beta yet, so Im sure it will improve over time! :) Cheers

      Hey mate! You need to change to Beta in Steam. Right click on X Plane 11 in your Steam library, properties and pick the beta tab. Go into game, enable VR mode and it will start up SteamVR automatically and now it works :) Enjoy!

    Hello. I got Oculus and it works fiine with Steam Vr and the Oculus Software. But in X-Plane i can't switch "enable VR Hardware" in the VR Hardware section (its grey) bit alle Sensors and the Rift are green and in all other Games it works.
    Did you have an Idea?

  • @komrad1983
    @komrad1983 6 лет назад

    Thanks. The process lasso part is unneeded. Since X-plane for Oculus is running without steam, there is no Vrcompositor.exe process running. And in my opinion messing with processes and their priorities is a bad idea in general. People who created these games and programs and hardware were smart enough to know how to prioritize. For the clouds part, they do work and look nice, I will post them on my channel. Enviro 1.06 works and looks fine too, currently testing Enviro 1.08 and doing work for developers as well. Same thing for the fog, limiting it vis is just unrealistic and doesn't look good. Minimizing XP mirror down to tray will make your mouse not work in xp. One more advise: assign a button for re-centering view on your joy and assign a button for hiding/showing mouse pointer while in HMD, you can switch it off and have better looks performance using it with real joystick, rudder pedals and throttle. For the lua scripts, go to my channel and soon I will post it there.

      Hey mate! Use the free OpenVR Input Plugin for OBS Studio. It will import the VR mirror view from SteamVR and u can crop it in many ways in the plugin.

    Great set of optimisations.. unfortunately I am screwed on one of them. CPU overclock. Last year I broke with my intel-only policy and built my first ever AMD system. Ryzen 7 clocked at 3.84ghz (it's not stable above this). Reason for going Ryzen was for 3d rendering and I got tired of Intel rising prices and temperatures because of their thermal paste on IHS. Now I have a Ryzen for 3d rendering I don't need a Ryzen for 3d rendering... 3d rendering has advanced to GPU based rendering via Octane and Blender Cycles. I am someone who likes to overclock. I used to chill my old Pentium 4 below zero with liquid and TEC. My previous i5 2500k was clocked at 4.8ghz. Now I'm stuck at 3.84ghz and my 4000mhz ram is stuck at 3466mhz on Ryzen.
    Yesterday I came within 2mm of buying an 8700k CPU and ditching the Ryzen. I like to run flight sims and currently DCS and other flight sims are held back by ancient single core code. I'm running HTC Vive so I need those high clock speeds! I discussed this on DCS World forum yesterday and the feedback was that Ryzen is fine but the flight sim needs to change to make use of multi-threading and also that moving to an 8700k still wouldn't be enough to run DCS World at 90 fps with some aircraft (any aircraft with vintage analog dials like the Mig 21).
    I don't want to give up on Ryzen and go running back to intel but I think that when Ryzen+ launches it won't bring much of a clock boost (4.3ghz is the rumour).

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Raphael, Im glad you found it useful :)
      Yeah its a shame that Ryzen doesnt allow overclocking!
      I can tell you that you wont get SO much increase in performance going for a 8700K to be honest. I went from a 4790K at 4,6-4.7 to 8700K at 4.9 but the improvement in terms of fps was minimal. I think we need to wait for multi threaded optimizations in those simulators until we really can use the full potential of our CPUs, whenever we have AMD or Intel...
      Lets hope the upcoming Vulcan API implementation in XP11 will fix this! Thanks for sharing your thoughts btw :) Cheers

    • @zentriceggofficial
      @zentriceggofficial 6 лет назад +1

      I think you're right. I've been told that even an 8700K + 1080Ti won't stop the FPS from dropping to 45 or less in DCS world in some scenarios. Ancient code. 2.5 is a bit better and Vulkan is supposed to be coming to DCS also. Did you know Doom VFR was Vulkan? I've been checking and apparently there are a few VR games running under Vulkan now.

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah its sad but true...
      Hmm I look forward to try DCS soon again, especially when I get my Odyssey and Pimax 8K :)
      Yep, Doom VFR is built upon Vulkan API, but I was actually hoping it would utilize the CPU better than it does. Probably the GPU is bottlenecking here :)

    • @zentriceggofficial
      @zentriceggofficial 6 лет назад +1

      Perhaps they went with Vulkan for Doom VFR because the game code was badly optimised? It's just a random theory. I purchased on release and got a refund because of the teleport and bugs. DCS or X-plane with Pimax and motion platform.

    • @SweViver
      @SweViver  6 лет назад +1

      That could indeed be the reason! I can admit though that DOOM VFR runs much better now after all updates, and free loco works great! Tried it just 3 days ago and was really surprised how good its now compared when it was launched..
