A smart consumer is an informed consumer: This video is hopefully me doing my part in making sure no one gets roped in by the endless feed of "Elden Ring Killer" and "Better than Skyrim" I've seen recently. Haven't been this excited for a game in a while, precisely because of a lot of the stuff covered in the video, just want to make sure people know what they're getting themselves into! Also, Subscribe! DD2 is almost here, and I'll have A LOT to say about it once it is!

i really appreciate when fans of a game do stuff like this. so many default to "not all games are meant for you" and leave it like that-- it comes off as gate keeping elitism which might have the opposite effect on some folks, which then sets them up for failure/disappointment.
what you did is "this game might not be for you, and here's why" purely informative and simply letting folks know what's up. while i'm a fan of the original dragons dogma, dark souls, and so on, not enough fellow fans make the effort to properly inform potential fellow fans.
      keep up the great work~

@@kayodoubleu3310 The only game I've seen doing that succesfully is Outward. It's divided by some somewhat big zones and you have a map of your current zone, but no mini-map nor markers. You have to actually see the points of interest to know more or less where you are.
I think maybe having the option to turn off the mini-map in DD2 would be cool, but the world being way larger than it was before (which was already about the size of 3 zones in Outward I'd say), it's almost mandatory to indicate the player location. Another aspect that rarely gets discussed are pawn (party) selection. There are various classes that range from melee, bow, magic, and combinations of those 3. Party makeup is hugely important because monsters & bosses have various strengths & weaknesses and its all to easy to fail because your party makeup was geared towards specific damage types and then running into bosses that are immune to those damage types. Its important to have a pawn that excels in specific & varied damage types. Basically, you want a bow class (to attack enemies from range), a melee class (to tank damage) and a magic class (because they do various elemental damage).
And because the world is full of varied enemy & boss types, you need a well rounded party. Sometimes you will encounter enemies that are resistant to magic, so you need physical. Sometimes you encounter enemies that are resistant to physical damage, so you need a class that can deal various elemental damage (lightning, fire, cold, etc)...and you will constantly run into a wide range of enemies that have a wide range of weaknesses & resistances. Meaning that you will want a wide range of classes in your party.
And the class system (called vocations) is set up so that you can easily change class for yourself & your main pawn...and release & hire new pawns whenever you want. Technically, you can have a party of any make-up you want, but its recommended to have a varied party. Want 3 mages or sorcerers? You can do that. Want 2 melee & a bow class? you can do that. Ultimately, its up to you, but just be aware that you will encounter a variety of enemies with a variety of weaknesses & resistances. And at any point, you can swap classes and try something different. Once you select a class for you & your main pawn, you are NOT tied to it. Just remember to swap out rented pawns when they get under-leveled because rented pawns do not level up. You have to release them from your service and then hire new ones. But the game's system allows you to alter the search engine to narrow down preferences, selecting by class, gender, race, and even proficiencies. Its a very robust system.

I can see why other players dislike it though since they most like just want to continue the game without thinking too much about inventory.
For me I just think it's useful since I can have large hired pawns capable of carrying a bunch of my things for me so I'm not weighed down by them myself, and can give me what I need in the heat of the moment.

There's some open world exploration which I don't think they made many if any before dd1, but they do have that dmc combat system, the ability to grab and throw enemies, random stuff in the environment. Not Capcom but has an aspect of dark souls with the stamina management and focus on overcoming challenges and bosses. But here's to hoping that DD2 can deliver on its promises and provide a more "quest simulator" vibe without feeling like a barren wasteland with low diversity enemies and gimmicky battle tactics.

No one can really answer that since in the previous game the vocations were unlocked by leveling the base vocations to a certain level, while in DD2, it’s been confirmed by the devs that the vocations are now tied to quests via the meisters. There’s also the whole stat thing by the Warfarer class which implies that the stat system may no longer use the old system, so instead of leveling while under specific vocations to get specific stats, the stats may instead be automatically re-allocated based on your equipped vocation, though this isn’t confirmed yet

    • @dantemiles689
      @dantemiles689 5 месяцев назад +5

So these things haven't been confirmed but I'll tell you how it worked in the first game because this game MIGHT follow suit.
      - You can be any class or "vocation" you want and you can switch between them at inns as long as they are unlocked.
      - In the previous game they were unlocked after level 10 this game will feature side quests to unlock some of the classes.
      - Depending what class you are depends what stats increase. For example if you're a mage and you level up you might get +4 magic but if you're a warrior you'll get +4 Attack. So it may be important to use other classes at low level so you can get the stats you want. A class like spearhand might get +2 attack and + 2 magic.
      - It is unclear if these mechanics will return for 2 but it's a safe bet that it will.

I know what I'm getting into with DD2, which I played the original alot and then some when Dark Arisen came. Also, I vividly remembering the chatter of the game getting compared to Skyrim and such.
Comparing it to Soulsborne is a disservice to the sequel. While it's forming with its approach to questing, npcs, in fact, approach you instead if they have a quest. I learned there is some beetle you can snag in areas to increase your carrying capacity by using it or selling it to gain a decent amount of gold.
I personally don't know about how to truly feel about that beetle thing, but that aside. There is a slight sense of direction in DD2 from the information we've been given. I'm one of those people who prefer a mild to slight sense of direction and then left to my own devices in the game.

i hated that the game was in 1st person mode, but at least you'd be able to see your own custom character in cutscenes so i ended up buying it (or so i was led to believe), cause i love seeing my own character in the games i play. well, jokes on me i gues... That video is a very good idea. I came to the first game with darksouls expectations, and your point is exactly what I felt. I expected a rhythmic fight of one on one. Sometimes one on 2.
Sometimes 1 vs many, and then it becomes more tactic.
But in DD I suddenly faced a giant boss, and the entire camp came to fight. I think what surprised me most was how little my individual character contributed, compared to what I'm used to
In many fights on the road, like goblins and stuff, you can just straight up stare at the sky and let your pawn take them on (I'm talking about early game)
I also came with expectations for demon souls difficulty. I can say that for the first 5 hours at least - not even close
I think I'll like this one a lot more after I know specifically what its purpose is. I strongly agree with you that the expectations you come with to a game are crucial to how much you'll enjoy it

I'd like to note Skyrim tells its stories through conversations and world interactions whether that be books, scroll, etc. Dragons Dogma is much more like Dark Souls where information is drip fed to you and you need to explore and read to uncover quest lines. That's a reason DD is less accessible for the average player.

Then have the advantage in combat and a high chance to connect with your chosen attack. Miss, then enemy who is disadvantaged gets a critical and you die in 1 shot. That’s not fun. It removes my skill as a player and makes it random luck.

The expectations of today's games is to make them accessible to many people which ends up with the game telling you where to go and what to do and the player mindlessly follows that path.

Good info. Reminded me of some of the reasons why I knew the first _Dragon's Dogma_ wouldn't be for me. Design choices I fundamentally disagree with, and would need to force myself to ignore. Sometimes they're just dealbreakers. Like, if I'm playing an RPG and discover that the loot you find is not only 100% randomized but stupidly open to save scumming, that's pretty much it-I can no longer enjoy the game the way I may have been. It's what made me drop _ESIV:Oblivion_ like a rock. Bethesda never made that mistake again, conspicuously enough.

One of the best experiences I’ve had was keeping a quest log when elden ring first launched. I just wrote down what I had done and what people asked me to do and once in a While I’d have to read back through it. It really added to the immersion and sense of adventure. If DD2 doesn’t have a decent quest log I really recommend doing this.

Dragons Dogma is like a Map in Elve language and you have it in front of you, you understand nothing but there is a BIG RED X I mean it’s a map obviously, there a mountains, and this point looks like a forest ? Ok , u can’t describe why but all u want is reach that marked point, no clue how, no clue when or why but let’s see what’s happening and enjoy the journey with the hope to reach your target and let you fall in the lore !

Well said, and I'm someone who knew next to nothing about Dragons' Dogma before now.
I think a lot of lessons here can be applied to any other game. A lot of players get frustrated when a game isn't what they expected, and they blame the game and its devs for making a "bad game". The players weren't misled by the devs & publishers, they were misled by a combination of their personal expectations and by speculation from misinformed friends, media, and content creators. Then the game gets a bad rap from the people it was never catering to in the first place. I hope that doesn't happen with DD2.

Can’t wait! This games gonna be hard I bet. Well, for me at least. I’m good at a lot of video games, but for some reason I had trouble with dragons dogma 1. Maybe I didn’t play it long enough? (I didn’t play it for long because I played it for the first time just before elden ring came out coincidentally lol, and when I got elden ring I just wanted to play that instead.) but I found DD1 to be pretty difficult like I said, so was that simply a case of it just being one of those games that are difficult when you first start the game because you’re really weak in the beginning and don’t know how a lot of things work? Sorry for the long and confusing comment it’s getting late and I’m super tired 😅. I also want to add that the vibe I got from this video was that you genuinely wanted people to just be informed and aware, this video wasn’t just a video made for the sake of views where all the effort goes into the “marketing” of the video. I mean that is just the impression I get, but It does seem you genuinely had good intentions when making this, and I respect that

There is an important concept in Game Design that not all games follow, is called an archetype, not the regular meaning of the word but one specifical to game development, and it can be summarized in basically "the specific core characteristics of a game that make it unique" this concept is different from a genre because a genre is "the general characteristics of a game that help identify it", the thing with this is that the principle of an archetype is to determine specific playstyles and ways of playing that make it appealing in its own way, for instance Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and Dragons Dogma are all third person action adventure games as a genre, but the archetype of each is completely different one beign what pople wrongfully call a genre, the souls-like archetype, another one is the monster fighting style of MH and then there is this immersive system of DD. This makes the games comparable in the surface but whole different worlds once properly discribed.

It's so good that you made this video (just subscribed btw). Dragon's Dogma is its own thing, and it should be appreciated for what it is rather than by what it's not. The Skyrim and Dark Souls comparisons are just insane. Just as Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls are two very different games, so is Dragon's Dogma very different from both.
