In season one it is revealled that Sinclair once worked as a roofing carpenter (Worker), he fought in the Earth Alliance as a pilot (Warrior) and was educated by Jesuit monks (Religious). This informed Valen's creation of the three castes of the Grey Council.

The carpenter connection is also a nice parrarell to Jesus, which is essentially who Valen is to the Minbari.

The time loop is closed so this part can be explained
      The Anla'Shok(Rangers) follow The One
Valen/Sinclair is The One who was, the beginning, he was the worker who created the Anla'Shok
Delenn is The One who is, the middle, the priest who restored the Minbari faith to their mission(context on the faltering faith you get later in "In The Beginning" movie)
Sheridan is The One who will be, the end, the warrior who ends the great war
Time time travel makes sense but you lack the full context for the war
You have a single edge of the three edges sword
I will be there when the second edge is heard and the third edge are revealed

Michael O'Hare got a great sendoff here, and I'm glad he did because he definitely deserved one.
I've always said that his efforts on helping to keep Babylon 5 on the air after he had to depart the series due to illness are tremendously underrated. He stood aside with grace, continued to support and advocate for the show even though he was no longer on it, still attended conventions and was one of the show's biggest proponents.
If he hadn't been so willing to take one for the team the way he did there might not have been a season 2 or 3 of B5, and it would now be a forgotten show with a handful of fans speculating on how it would have gone had it not been cancelled.

25:16 I love how the Londo G'Kar strangling scene gets completely re contextualized once we have that final scrap of information (Londo's keeper). I always assumed Londo's visions of this moment was just the inevitable end of the hatred between himself and G'Kar and then we find out that G'Kar killing Londo was an act of mercy.

So now we know all the "prophecies" of Valen was simply Sinclair "remembering" what had happened in his own "past". At this point, once Sinclair left the current timeline, the prophecies of Valen are complete. JMS actually foreshadowed this in the episode with Michael York who thought he was King Arthur. At the very end Marcus has a throwaway line about maybe Kosh being Merlin. He says Merlin was said to have aged backwards so his "prophecies" were just him remembering the future. The more you look into this show, the more incredible it becomes.

The Original plan was for Sinclair to be Valen reborn.
Basically B5 would be destroyed by the Warrior Caste in retaliation for Delenn breaking the Gray Council.
Sinclair, Delenn and their team would steal B4 to bring to the Present and use it as their new base called Babylon Prime.
Just as Anna has been a driving force for John to learn about the Shadows in the original plan it was Catherine Sakai.
There was no Sheridan in the original plan it was all Sinclair including his relationship with Delenn.
But Michael O'Hare had his mental health issues and had to be written out. JMS came up with Sheridan and amazingly salvaged the storyline.
Michael O'Hare deserves a lot of credit he held on long enough in season 1 to end the season for his castmates. JMS offered to write him out ASAP but Michael didn't want to hurt the show. He then cameback to give his character closure once he got well enough to. He was a private man who asked JMS to keep the reason he left quiet until his death even though there were awful rumors of the Network not seeing him as a leading man which weren't true.
Michael O'Hare was a fighter on and off camera and bless him for bringing Sinclair/Valen to life.

Where are you getting the first bit from? I've been an avid B5 fan since it first aired and have NEVER heard that, so I would appreciate a source on that.
I have doubts about what you say because the entire premise of the show is that it is the story of Babylon 5. Doing what you say would be like Deep Space 9 being destroyed at the end of their season 3 (or was it 4?) and than just carrying on with a show named after something that no longer exists.

  • @Xenobears
    @Xenobears Месяц назад

17:45 Jerrybaldi was never stuck on B5. Sinclair didn’t want him coming because of the risk that exposure to the time travel sci-fi plot device (the tachyon field) would cause rapid aging and death for Garibaldi once he returned to the normal time line.
It was always Sinclair who went back 1,000 years with Babylon 4 to become Valen and save the Minbari. The episode was setting up a stable time loop.
Nobody else could be allowed to go because the timeline required that Sinclair go. He would be the one to reshape Minbari society into what we see in the show-setting up all of the rituals and traditions that they follow…
Which makes one wonder: how many of the more unusual rituals did Sheridan set up JUST to mess with people (like the flarn eating ritual)?

It is touching that JMS did much to help Michael O'Hare after discovering his mental issues.
First, he offered to halt production, so O'Hare could seek treatment. Knowing this could cost jobs and, ultimately, doom the show. He refused. Only asking to finish the season and then write him off. Giving JMS time to find his replacement.
He then wrote this episode and the video cameo as a way to give him some work and a heroes send off.

One tip guys after you finish the show and goes back to rewatch it you will catch hints and spoilers JMS placed throughout the series. This two part show has ties to things even in the pilot that it finally paid off and with those time flashes you get hints of things to come, JMS is a master of telling you were things are going without telling you how your going to get there, making the ride better than the destination. JMS would have been a great vacation planner if that talent would work in the other field. Imagine kids instead of asking are we there yet were too caught up in the trip to care if they ever got to the final location. Your in for quite the ride.

IMO this is one of the 'Tidiest' time travel stories in movies & TV. We know Ray hates them but here there is no paradox's & no logic jumps. Human & Minbari souls started to merge when Sinclair became part Minbari (he did it first while in the past) & Delenn changed to close that loop & during the Earth-Minbari war the Tri-lunary glowed when they were testing Sinclair because it was keyed to Valen's (Sinclairs) DNA which is how the Grey Council made the connection between Human & Minbari & gave them the excuse to end the war. Who was in the suit when is still foggy to me as I think all of them were in it a one point. And the taking of B4 was taken in the middle, pushed to the future, then sent to the past.

This was the reason I became so paranoid about spoilers to this day. B5 was airing while I was in grad school. I had a major test the week this episode aired, so I did not watch it live. Taped it and figured, well, I can wait til the weekend to watch it. My mistake was going to my local comic shop on Friday to pick up my books. Someone was chatting with the clerk as I was going up to the counter and what do I hear "Could you believe Sinclair was Valen!?!"

The blue spacesuit is a prop from the 1980s film "2010: The Year We Make Contact". In turn, that spacesuit is a recreation of a spacesuit from "2001: A Space Odyssey", which is "2010"'s predecessor.

I'd honestly rewatch the episode you got most of the vital points but it is a detail heavy one with ties to multiple previous storyline's and hints at future developments. The whole series is a masterclass in long form storytelling with threads which run from the pilot all the way to the finale and this episode is one of the crucial junctions where seemingly throw away hints burried in the B plots of "filler" episodes take on a whole new meaning and just because a story or plot seems to be resolved doesn't mean ot wont crop up again taking on a whole new dimension.

Delenn is "The One Who Is" aka the middle because she is the one that steered all the events leading up to this point. She choose Sinclair's fighter at the battle of the line, she kept closely to the Prophecies of Valen, and broke the Grey Council thus keeping Babylon 5 out of the hands of Clark. There is one more reason but that hasn't happened yet so can't spoil it.

JMS really wears his influences on his sleeves; and this is Heinleinian time travel: all time travel that happens in the B5 universe is deterministic. It happens because that's the way it happened, time travel included. Thus, for example, no one in our timeline ever succeeds in going back in time and killing or aiding Hitler, because he shot himself in a bunker. Or perhaps it was a time traveler who snuck Zachary Taylor the poisoned cherries; got away with that one smoothly.

Garibaldi couldn't come to the ride because he, like Sinclair, had already been exposed to the maximum of time radiation a person can handle back in Babylon Squared.
If he'd come a second time, he'd be stuck in the past or die of old age as soon as he left the anomaly cocoon surrounding B4 in the present - like the pilot that happened to be too near B4 when it emerged in 2261, back in Babylon Squared.

Garabaldi couldnt come because Sinclair aged when they went from 6 years back to 2 years , if they went forward again he would die. The way the time flashes work is that you jump to other points in your life, it’s not just a vision, you literally move forward or backward within your life. That’s why both Sinclair and Garibaldi were so confused in their respective time flashes. Their current consciousness was actually in that time. Sheridan’s jump is extended due to his missing stabilizer but he is experiencing his future from within his own body at that time. There was an attempt to make him look older, he has some grey and some eye wrinkles but it’s very hard to notice since most of the scenes are filmed either in near darkness or harsh lighting. It’s actually pretty accurate, though. Aside from letting his hair grey out, he looked pretty damn good in his early 60’s, 17 years after this episode. He looks good now, but clearly older in his upper 70s.
What you think is a 3 is the B of the B4 logo. The B is in black and overlaid by the red 4. It’s a bit of a messy logo.

Plot hole; A thousand years in the future when the Minbari encountered humans (Minbari war starts), despite living and working aboard Babylon 4 (as a base), with all of the crates, signs, etc... with human markings, they didn't recognize any of the ship markings from the destroyed human ships, outposts, stations or dead crews?
Did Dukhat know about Babylon 4 but died before he could prevent the war that had to happen?

Not a plot hole it's a Bootstrap Paradox. They didn't steal B4 until after they met humans a 1000 years in the future, but of course they wouldn't have been able to steal it if they hadn't already stolen it.
But to address your main point... they did know, or a least a few on the Grey Council knew about it.

You guys are overthinking Deleen appearing in the suit. She saw the suit became empty after Sheriden disappeared. So when he appeared again, she gave him her time stabilizer, and she took his suit. So from that point on it was her who was appearing and disappearing in the suit (like we saw in Season 1) and it was her that saw Zatharus as well. The only main thing that was changed from Season 1 was when Delenn put her hand on Sinclair. This was because they had to change that dynamic of the story when the actor for Sinclair couldn't continue the show after Season 1. More answers are coming for some of the new things you saw as well.

She could have still put her hand on his shoulder. It’s not like she kissed him or anything, but her dress in completely different from the red ruffled sleeve seen in the original and I guess it didn’t matter to them at that point.
I think they put the hand in to the original scene because, obviously, they couldn’t show her face and they wanted her to be “present” in the scene as opposed to a disembodied voice. I never liked the original shot as it awkwardly framed.

    Jeffrey David Sinclair. Valen.
The son, David Sheridan, is named after both Jeff and John's father.
Also, Delenn saw John kept drifting, so she put her undamaged stabilizer on him, put him out of the suit and put the suit on herself. Later, Zathras gives her a fixed stabilizer and she locks on the correct time.

This might be my favorite episode in B5. According to lore, Peter Jurasik (Londo) asked JMS for a pound of whatever he was smoking when he wrote this episode.
Recently somebody explained the original B5 plan in a youtube video. Sorry that I don't remember who they were and can't give credit to that person, they did a great service.
The plan was that the Shadows would be a stepping stone to the great antagonists of the show - the minbari.
My source wouldn't explain, but I think the minbari would devolve into a civil war - maybe the warrior caste against the religious and worker castes, with the rest of the younger races caught in the middle. At the end of the series, the minbari would destroy B5, as we saw in the flash forwards. They'd need to get themselves a new base - B4. It'd be the launching point for a new five years series, Babylon Prime (B4 renamed).
Delenn would be married to Sinclair by that point, which is why she was more intimate, putting her hand i his shoulder, in Babylon Squared than in this version of the episode.
Unfortunatley, Michael O'Hare's disease got in the way, and JMS needed to retool the show around a new lead, Sheridan, and the rest is history.

  • @emilmlodnicki3835
    @emilmlodnicki3835 6 месяцев назад +1

So I figured out WHY there was a change with one of the final shots. In Babylon Squared, Sinclair takes off his space helmet and looks old, then Delenn touches his shoulder and says "it's time to go" hinting at a more intimate relationship. Then in War Without End, Delenn doesn't touch his shoulder.
That's because in the original Babylon Prime timeline, Sinclair and Delenn do form a relationship and they were supposed to steal Babylon4 to fight the Shadows After Babylon 5 gets destroyed by another enemy. They bring B4 to the future and fight the Shadows for the next 5 year story arc.
None of those are spoilers. This didn't happen because Michael O'Hare got sick and the entire storyline had to be compressed greatly. Also, Valen was never mentioned in Season 1, so they had to build up to that backstory during Season 2 and Season 3 to give Sinclair that out.
Babylon 5 does not get blowed up.
