I'm happy you noticed that detail of Jerry smiling at Layne. There is at least another instance where that happens in another song of this concert. It's just Jerry feeling very happy about having his best friend back and performing so beautifully, even if only momentarily.
That little smile says so much. I Feel like he was giving a little 'I told you he's got this' to the guys.
From what I had read, he was smiling at Mike, as to tell him 'see, it's gonna be alright', they were worried about this working out or not, Layne was not only high, Jerry was very sick that day with a barf bucket next to him.
Yeah it seems Jerry was smiling at mike, one could only guess about what, my guess would be that sick bass line mike just pulled off
Thanks for sharing🌺
Jerry thinking, Yeah, my friend is back, he still got it at 100%. I think Laynes voice is different because some of his teeth missed. I know from experience, if you lose some tooths you sound exactly like that ( without talent of singing) .
Aaliyah, you just barely opened up a jar of flies, That is ,Alice in Chains. Please, continue to play more of their music. I promise you , that you won't regret it.
I offer my unwavering support to everyone on this board that is hoping you will react to 'Love Hate Love' - Live at the Moore's Theatre - you will get the chance to see Staley at his peak vocals. It's an amazing performance so i hope you add it to your mental chalkboard. I enjoyed this one very much - thanks for posting it.
Thanks for sharing your recommendation💕
i really respect the fact that you dive into more than the sound and also talk about the expression and emotion
Thanks so much 🌺🌺🌺
That smile was a key moment.
Layne had been really struggling by this point. Would often fall apart during performances.
His band mates questioned if he would be able to make it through this night. Jerry stepped up, and said yes. He can do it.
That smile was Jerry’s “Told ya so” moment.
🥰
At his worst, even the two performances he did following the unplugged, when did Layne ever fall apart during a performance? They simply didn’t perform much due to Laynes struggles. They had not performed in 2 years prior to this Unplugged performance, and combined with Laynes worsening condition, the guys didn’t know what to expect.
@@melany5506
It got to the point that, as much as they liked Layne, Metallica could not tour with AiC anymore.
@@robbob5302 never heard this before. I know they had to cancel performances because of Laynes condition, and eventually pulled out all together which pissed Hatfield off. Never heard about him actually falling apart during and screwing up a performance
@@melany5506
I don’t know exactly what happened in those days. I just know it had to be something pretty severe, for Metallica to do that. And piss off the fans.
Maybe it was things Layne was doing on stage. Or maybe off stage. But had to be a lot of it, whichever it was.
I can't get enough of the way you pronounce words. Your tone gives me positive vibes and it is very comforting.
Thanks so much for your kind words and appreciation💕
I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!
Thanks for sharing🌺
Definitely enjoyed this reaction, I could see when you talked about Layne's passing, it hit you hard. I remember when I was a kid in the early 90s, I would frequently steal my step-dad's CDs when he was at work. I kept taking Alice in Chain's album Dirt, it was my favorite album then. My step-dad didn't like that I was taking his CDs, but he took me to go see Alice in Chains. It was the first concert I ever attended and the most special one in my heart. I still can't believe I got to see Layne Staley live.
If you're looking to react to more Alice in Chains, I would highly recommend reacting to "Love, Hate, Love," live at the Moore. That show was Layne in his prime.
Thanks for sharing and recommendations
Yeees!! My favorite part is Jerry's smiling basically knowing Layne is killing it!!
I’m glad you reacted to this song, especially this version, as you take a deeper dive into AIC..:) There’s so much to discover with them, if you’re into the live stuff from them, definitely check out their ‘Live from the Moore’ concert, with classics ‘Love Hate Love’ and ‘Bleed the Freak’ highlighting Laynes incredibly powerful vocals…:)
👍👍👍
Thanks so much for sharing your recommendation
@@AaliyahCapili thanks for listening to your fans and checking different things out, it’s fun to watch you discover new things and get your perspective on them
Fantastic stuff ❤❤❤. This band has both lit and snuffed out the flame of my heart, often at once... for decades now. Thanks for finding them, and your humility
Couldn't have nailed the Jerry smiling at Layne dynamic more than you did
😊
Thanx for this reaction!! The best unplugged in the history!!!👍
Thanks for watching too
Jerry was definitely smiling at lane he loved him like a brother and he knew the struggles he was going through
Thanks for sharing
AIC is my favorite of the grunge band era. Layne was such an unbelievably powerful singer - his heart was in every lyric he ever sang. If you really want to feel it, listen to the live version of "Love, Hate, Love" - it will show you why he was so revered. Great reaction to a great song! This is the fourth video of yours I've watched tonight, and I'm subscribed! I love your participation in the songs, and your comments on the techniques!
Oh thank you very much for your support
Alice is my favorite band ever!! Love this reaction SO MUCH!!! ❤❤❤
Thanks so much🥰
It was a amazing he could sound so great, despite missing teeth from his addiction at this point. Such a talent, gone too soon.
💕💕💕
He is emotionless, while spreading layers and layers of emotions through hundreds of thousands of people, brilliant
🥰
Loved your reaction and how u took your time to research about the song and the band 💗 Good video, u should react to more Alice in Chains songs. I recommend Love, Hate, Love live at the Moore :)
Thanks so much🥰
Such a great song. Glad you noticed it.
🥰
This song is a love song from guitarist Jerry Cantrell to the love of his life Courtney Clarke. Early pressings listed this as the 12th track on the Dirt album. Later pressings listed this as the 4th track on the Dirt album supposedly to fit better with the band’s desire to have the album loosely tell a story from song to song. On the Unplugged album it's the 5th track.
Songwriter and guitarist Jerry Cantrell said of the song in the Music Bank box set liner notes, “Down in a Hole’s in my top three, personally. It’s to my long-time love. It’s the reality of my life, the path I’ve chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It’s hard for us to both understand…that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships."
Once Layne got his voice where he wanted it, it stayed there with little effort. He was always better live than studio version. Layne's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne's vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12 year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002.
Layne was so much more than his drug addiction. He was able to come up with lyrics and harmonies off the top of his head. He knew enough to know that Jerry Cantrell was playing with the wrong people and gave him contact info for Sean Kinney and Mike Starr. He wrote the lyrics for the songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album and drew the cover art for that album. Layne was a genius in his own right. He still was able to figure things out in a snap off the top of his head. Layne just had his demons.
With MTV Unplugged, when Layne finally gave the Okay to do it. They were supposed to rehearse in Seattle but NO one showed up. Sean, Mike and Jerry would show up at different times but Layne would be MIA or Layne would show up for one or two songs and then leave. When they finally got to New York, Sean and Mike had an argument with Jerry because they thought with Layne's condition and addiction, he wouldn't be able to hit the high notes. Jerry was the ONLY ONE who was confident that Layne could do it. When you watch DOWN IN A HOLE Unplugged, and Layne hits that high note, you see Jerry look over at Sean and Mike with this "I TOLD YOU SO!" smirk. Layne did it again on ROOSTER Unplugged and Jerry did that same smirk.
The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because Layne was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was doing other drugs on top of Heroin). His liver was damaged and he knew it. He was just high enough to do the show to fight off withdrawal symptoms and he didn't get dope sick. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to the path Layne had chosen for his life. That show was filmed in April, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a six-year-long slow suicide.
MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show.
The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team.
Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period.
Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway."
"Whatever dramas are going on in my life, I always find that place inside my head where I see myself as the cleanest, tallest, strongest, wisest person that I can be." -- Layne Staley
"My bad habits aren't my title. My strengths and my talent are my title." -- Layne Staley
"When I tried drugs they were fucking great, and they worked for me for years, and now they're turning against me - and now I'm walking through hell and this sucks. I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them. I didn't want my fans to think heroin was cool. But then I've had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they're high. That's exactly what I didn't want to happen." -- Layne Staley
"My grandmother and mother were such huge losses, but I got Layne, the guys, and I got this.” - Jerry Cantrell, Kerrang! (December 1, 2018)
“Jerry really loved Layne [Staley]. They had a bond I haven't seen before,” Jerry’s former manager Bill Siddons, April 19, 2002 (the day Layne was found two weeks after he died).
Thank you very much for sharing all of these🌺
Their so impressed that he could remember his lines and sound so good n make it through a whole song is what that is....😢
Many thanks for sharing🌺
Smart, wonderful voice, beautiful smile.
🥰
At 8:32 you see Jerry look up as Layne hits an insanely beautiful note.
🥰🥰🥰
@ Aaliyah Capili You should definitely go check out their Jar of flies album.. and also Layne was in a group called Mad Season, and he has a couple incredible songs about addiction called the River of deceit and Wake up... You will absolutely love these Tucson's I think! 🔥 as always
Thanks for all the recommendations🥰
So cool to see a young person discover and really get into Layne and Alice in Chains. Cooler that even though you have an advanced understanding of and formal training in music and singing, you can get as lost as anyone in just how beautiful, unique and captivating their music is. Great reaction!
Thank you very much🥰
The irony of the line: “I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth” is that Layne practically had no teeth left at this point due to self-inflicted damage (drug use/lifestyle).
As for the smile that Jerry gave his band mates (bass player mostly), it was because they didn’t think Layne was even going to show up, and if he did, they doubted he’d be able to perform at his peak performance but Jerry had faith in him. When he nailed this part of the performance, it was Jerry’s was of saying: “see, I told you guys he’s going to be just fine!”
Thanks for sharing
I think it's great that you do some research on the bands/singers you react to. Some people don't like it, but I think it allows for a more in depth analysis and a greater appreciation for the artists (as you mentioned in this video). And I agree with you; their voices blend well together.
Thank you so much for your kind comment!
Legendary Layne. I was lucky enough to have seen them live. Layne was messed up on heroin at this time and Jerry (guitar)
had food poisoning from a street vendor hotdog when this was filmed. Harmonies and song are just epic.....
Thanks for sharing
for me its always been the harmonies that give AIC that one of a kind sound.
🥰
still my favorite band ever
😍
It’s awesome seeing metal rock the musicianship lyrics song
🥰
Your reactions are so pure & beautiful & so much accurate,... :)
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words and appreciation
Indeed it is a beautifull moment when Jerry smiles at Layne as many have stated before , if I remember right he said the smile was because Layne had said that he was scared his voice was going and that he would not be able to hold such prolonged notes anymore so the smile is a "I told you so " to Layne and a "Don't give in we got your back" smile .
Thanks for sharing🌺
It’s really cool and observant that you picked up on the moment Jerry looked at Layne and nodded to the rest of the band 🖤 being that Layne was so into his heroin addiction he actually had to be high for the performance to stave off dope sickness, it’s almost like Jerry saw him do that verse then smiled and nodded to the rest of the band like “Laynes still got it”!
🥰
I love how intelligent you are!!
Oh thanks for your kind words💕
❤you are a beautiful person, talented
Great réaction Thanks
Wow, thank you🥰
Nice job, I really enjoyed your reaction and analysis. 👍
Thanks so much🌺
That was awesome to express your feelings about his passing. The part you pointed out was when Jerry knew Layne was going to pull through. He looked back to reassure the others because they were all worried about his well being at that point. He claimed to have the flu, but....
Thanks for sharing
There was a short documentary I watched about Layne and it was so sad. He basically died alone in his apartment organs failing, lost control of bowels, on deaths door.
I believe it was Jerry or other member visiting him for 1 last time trying to convince him to go to ER or something even tho was maybe too late and he refused help.
paraphrasing but the last words he heard from Layne was him crying out yelling please don’t leave me..
of course this was 3 years ago so I might get a lot wrong. But It was absolutely heartbreaking hearing it.
😢😢😢🌺🌺🌺thanks for sharing

great band great song, great review

He was smiling at the bass player, saying, heck yeah he's nailing it. He's still in there. Does it on another song to. So happy that they we're able to get together before......
🥰
I love this song
🥰
They had both said in the past that they were BEST FRIENDS, LAYNE AND JERRY😊
🥰
Even at his worst, Layne was still the best.
🥰
We lost alot of our musicians and vocalists, but he still stings me to this day. It hurt doubly cause I had to call and tell my mom after I heard and hurt her too.
Black gives away to blue,is the second best alice in chains album, but best post layne chains!!!!
Thanks for sharing
I appreciate your reaction. I believe Jerry was smiling at Layne because he really nailed that verse.
Thanks for sharing💕
Those great vocal harmonies were something that always set AIC apart, because none of the other biggest Seattle bands had that. Jerry has said this song is one his favorites of his own compositions. But, yes, given Layne’s state by that point, I truly believe the lyrics could then apply to him just as much. If you watch him you can see he was much too skinny and pale during that performance. He was by then in quite bad shape. So, the heartbreaking thing is, when he sang “I don’t know if I can be saved”, I think that he knew it was true. 💔
Thanks for sharing Mr. Matthew
Liked your reaction, I noticed you've reacted to 3 of the big 4 in grunge music, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, but not Soundgarden. Are you planning on reacting to Soundgarden? I say they had the best singer of all 4 (& one of the best ever) some songs by Soundgarden are: 4th of July, Rusty Cage, Outshined, Rhinosaur, Birth Ritual, Blow up the Outside, Like Suicide, Fell on Black Days, Black Hole Sun (not the video version, the vid is strange and will distract from a great song, Searching with my Good Eye Closed.

Unplugged was swesome

Another amazing and lovely video my friend!! You don’t have to do a video or anything but I did just want to tell you that one of my most favorite Vocal Performances was Kiss Live 1995 MTV Unplugged doing “I Still Love You” Absolutely Fantastic Song and one of the best vocal performances ever, highly recommend you check it out someday just as one of your regular viewers. Have a lovely Day!! 💞💝💖
Thanks again! I will check it out too💕

Great reaction ❤
Thank you!! 😁
I know people say that Jerry Cantrell wrote 'Down in a hole' about losing a girl he loved (He did write the song - 'Heaven beside you'... about the same girl, and he performed it on "MTV Unplugged" as well) but there are lyrics in the song referring to struggling w/ substance abuse... ("I'd like to fly... but my wings have been so denied" ... "I've eaten the Sun so my tongue has been burned of the taste" ... "I don't know if I can be saved") It's all subjective... Alice In Chains' album 'Dirt' (1992) is mostly about the dire world of heroin addiction, so almost every song has some references to substance abuse.
Thanks for all the recommendations
Ciao Aaliyah! Sei bravissima e bellissima, complimenti! ❤️🥰
Thank you so much😍
Great reaction. Layne. ❤
Thank you!! 😁
What a cool reaction to such a sad, but pretty song 🥲
What a beauty though, you look like a princess 😽💯
Oh thank you very much🥰🥰🥰
I think he was smiling at bass player Mike Inez to say yeah layne still has it
🥰
The sadest thing is that Layne died, and his accountant contacted his family, because his bank account didnt have movements in like two weeks... they went to check on him and he was dead... he was dead like for two weeks before anyone noticed it... he was famous, he had so many... "friends"... and nobody knew he was dead... that is some loneliness

Rip to mike as well he died not long after layne for the same reason sad af cause he was the last person to see Layne and they got into a fight and laynes last words to him were I’m sorry don’t leave me before mike stormed out. His body was undiscovered for 2 weeks

If you listen it’s self explanatory

He was really strung out from drugs during this performance.

I sent you a message before but I don't think you got it. It's not your fault, I am a older person who is severely challenged with technology. I wanted you check out Sinead O'Connor singing Nothing Compares to you.( A song written by Prince). I really as why Celtic singers have certain sound in their vocals. Is it because of the accent ?? Also Sinead sings with ALOT of emotion. I never got to see her live. She used her music and fame to voice her political views which she felt very passionate about. She was NOT your average musical Artist. Not even close.
Thanks so much for sending me message, i would write all recommendations on a list and try my best to react to it. Thanks for all the recommendations, i just reacted to Sinead O Connor🌺she is so amazing🌺

Great to see you do this, Jerry is one of the best songwriters and performers ever and Layne is an all time great even in not great condition, this is an absolutely classic performance, Layne did well, Jerry kinda Carried and was just stellar and then Sean and mike were flawless on rhythm. Great perfomance from the best unplugged of all time, Jerry Cantrell is the GOAT and RIP Layne one of the best vocalists to even do it. Truly special band it’s sad it was so short lived because of Layne’s struggles
🌺
Jerry smiled that way because it has been some years since their last performance live due to Layne's addiction. This smile was saying : "Oh ! he's in the zone for real tonight. We're in for a treat". This was their very second to last live performance with Layne on vocals. Yup. Still hurts.
Layne wasn't smiling because he was missing teeth. Facts
Nobody was talking about that... We were talking about Jerry's smile while Layne sustaining that note for a while. Oh ! and it has been denied by Jerry and others. Not facts. @@heywoodjablowme8120
