Totally agree love that game and the sound brings me back to when I was young and a seven 11 had a arcade. Use to spend whatever quarters I could scrounge
The SMS was the first system I found in a throw out with 10 games and is my go to system. I love all the games and the art work on the boxes are amazing. Thank you John for another awesome video
Master System is my eternal love. Back in the day in Brazil when the NES wasn't released and the Master System was the first official console and I remember exactly the day when I played for the first time and util this day never stopped to play and Alex Kidd is my Super Mario FOREVER. Amazing list! Phantasy Star I remember my uncle playing and try to figured it out what a heck is this game. It wass the introduction to the RPG for was and the game STILL AMAZING. and the other funny thing is: Wonder Boy III in the Brazilian version is another character very famous from the Brazilian comics book, Monica. If I have to pickup 10 memorables games for me I would say: Alex Kidd in the Miracle World and in The Shinobi World, Keisenden, Outrun, Vigilante, Black Belt, Rastan, Shinobi, Wonder Boy, California Games and of course Phantasy Star. OK 11 ❤️
Great list. Kenseiden is one of my favorites and should get more love. Vigilante is a great looking port i just wished it used the boss voice at the end of each level.
Like others have already said, Zillion was great! I still have notebooks with codes written for each room. Gangster town was a great light gun game too! Great system with so many good games that people who didn't own a master system can now discover.
I was in the same club. I still consider it one of my two or three favorite consoles, and there are more than a handful of games that I go back and play regularly. Regarding Phantasy Star, it is arguably THE best 8-bit jrpg, and was still considered one the best jrpgs all through the 16-bit era.
Awesome. I love the sms. Loved the nes in the day too but dug the sms more. Favorite games were Phantasy Star, Miracle Warriors, Y’s, and Shinobi come to mind. We used to play Monopoly a lot on the sms as well as Double Dragon and Rocky to name a few. I always loved the sms card version of spy vs spy for some reason.
@First Last I don't think I've ever been completely maxed out but I've definitely beaten the game with all 4 alive. You need to use heal spells and such.
This was my first system. Fond memories of Gangster Alley, Rocky, Ghostbusters, The Ninja, Quartet, Outrun, Choplifter, and Phantasy Star. 1987 was one of the best years of my life.
I had the sms when it was new, with a lot of the early titles, most of the ones you listed above, i thought black belt was the coolest game ever. i still have all the games and console bought new from toys r us back in 87' .
Truly enjoy those videos cause those games and system are the ones I played the most! I ad time to play back then right up until the PS3 after that no time at all! So these are good memories , keep up the good work John!
Oh man, so many amazing games on this list. Glad I found your page after seeing you on MetalJesusRocks. One amazing Master system Game I go back to often is Penguin Land. Such a nice puzzle game AND it made use of a save feature AND a level editor. It is highly under rated. Thanks for this!
SMS always has epic 8 bit tunes, and it shows that the composers took their craft seriously in creating unforgettable atmospheres. Also, Zillion was another amazing title. Thanks for sharing!
John, would you do a video on great PAL exclusive Master System games you have discovered most sms games are still fairly cheap and being region free they are great to collect. I could recommend Ultima IV if you are into RPG games, it's very in-depth.
My favorite games for the Master System were and still are Golden Axe Warrior, Phantasy Star and Golvellius - Valley of Doom. Well, I think I will put the catridge of Golden Axe Warrior back into the Master System and play it again.
Black belt is a fun one. I go back to it often. Basically a better king-fu type game with really unique boss fights. I also have the original japanese version that is a fist of the north star game. Dick tracy is also a very good port of the genesis version that I really enjoy. Europe and Brazil got so many great games that we never did. I’m glad there was no region lock for those here.
My favorite games to go back and play are Ys, golvellius and miracle warriors. I also enjoy a round of spellcaster. So many good games for this system.
My favorites: Zaxxon 3-D, Great Basketball, Alien Syndrome, Shinobi, Choplifter, Gangster Town. Picked up a Power Base Converter last year at Cowlitz Gamers for Kids and have been slowly rebuilding my library with these and trying ones I never played before.
I watched my brother play through Golden Axe Warrior on the sega master system and it was amazing. Fantastic music, zelda-like game play. It was awesome!!!
Is not my first system but it is my all time favorite, R-Type is was my favorite with Wonder Game Monsterland. Will I have love to see Sega make Mini version. I didn’t have my console for stupid reason.
Even though I have no nostalgia for the original Wonder Boy III, I LOVE LizardCube's remaster on Switch! I've made it up to the final dungeon, but I want to go back to it soon and try to actually beat it. I also like that the modern version still supports the password system from the original game; the idea of being able to play the game on Master System and then carry over your progress to a current platform and vice-versa is fascinating to me.
Thanks John for covering the Master System. The vibe (sound, colors etc) is completely different to the NES so the games are perfectly unique. Some games are so gorgeous that no console could’ve manage to replicate. Even now when emulated or remaked like WB3.
Help me out everyone. I played a master system game a long time ago that was a side scrolling action game. The robot I was controlling was named Pauldin? We would go ride elevators and beat monsters and collect ID cards that lead to rooms with bosses. What is this game?
Thanks for this video! I think I actually played the Sega Master System before the NES, though I owned a NES first. My friends owned the SMS, and though I now can't remember the exact games I played, I remember it was tonnes of fun.
Golden Axe Warrior. It’s one of those rare expensive games that are actually really good. I’d still like to get my hands on a physical copy if it weren’t so expensive.
The sega master system was awesome, the sega master system was to australia what the nintendo was to the US. You'll probably get a lot of aussies watching your videos, cheers dude. Master system wonderboy 3 the dragons trap was the best console game ever imo, I'm so glad they did a modern remaster that actually did it justice.
Good games all. The momentum mechanic always throws me off in psycho fox. R-type is great. Phantasy Star is a yearly play since I starting collecting for the Master System. Still looking for Ninja Gaiden. WB3 is great. Only WB game I have been able to beat so far. Kenseiden is a good one. Batman returns grapple play is enjoyable. Snail Maze is a fun puzzler. The 3D game are neat for what they were at the time. Golvelious, Alex Kid in Shinobi world, Shinobi, Outrun, Illusion series, Lucky Dime capper, Dragon Crystal, and the list goes on.
Phantasy Star is fantastic. I didn't play it until long after it came out. This one really stands out compared to the original Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games. The Sega Ages remake respects your time but removing most of the grind (and a mapping system).
Very informative video to me. I bought my first Master System game after I got my Analogue Mega Sg. It was Double Dragon. I plan to get more. Great video John!
Im glad you enjoyed WonderBoy 3, if theres one thats my favourite it continues to be The Ninja (Sega Ninja in japan) still one of my all time favourite games
Great Volleyball is one of the most neglected, but still awesome sports games ever. I don't think theres ever been a good proper volleyball game since. PenguinLand was another favourite.
Psycho Fox is a great game. You have to beat it, the ending scene and the credits are totally worth it. I'm missing Astérix (the first one) in your list, but you US guys might not be too familiar with this French comic character.
It's true that the Master System is overlooked in the US, but it was more popular in Europe. I've seen European's on youtube who say the Master System was more popular in Europe than the NES. It was the opposite in the US where the NES was more popular. I've even noticed that there are no clone's, new controllers, or multi-carts for the Master System, despite all the aftermarket support for NES, SNES, and Genesis.
Playing Master System games with the FM sound enhancement made me realize just how awful most games sounded. The NES sounded amazing compared. If Sega wanted to extend the life of the Master System in the US, the FM thing as an add on would have been a good idea. But then Sega always was quick to move on to the next system wether you wanted it or not.
The Master System would have been, by far, the best console on the 8-bit generation if it had had the same video library that the NES had. And this is coming from a Nintendo fan who thinks the Super Nes is far superior to the Genesis / Mega Drive. It is a pity that it sold so badly in America.
the SMS had the best Rambo and Ghostbusters ports. we got it new for christmas 1988. safari hunt was the superior pack in light gun game. snail was the best game though.
There's just not enough love for snail. Tthe fact that it was free and it was hidden made it so much cooler than stupid Mario brothers......ok. Maybe that's a bold over estimation on my part. But it was fun to find.

Great video the Master System was my main system as a kid. What is also great about the master system is that if you have a RetroTink and a pair of HD retrovision cables, the system looks great on a flat screen.
Master system is really really fun to collect for. Couldn't afford to go real console with it. But did go with an off brand SMS to Genesis cart converter. Works good enough for me. :)
"Sega Master System Games Worth Revisiting Part 1" -- John Hancock (Mar 1, 2020) 01. Psycho Fox 02. R-Type 03. Phantasy Star 04. Ninja Gaiden 05. Wonder Boy III I've never heard of Psycho Fox. The master system will always be the best 8 bit system hands down.. Saga does what Nintendo don't.. Such ashame it didn't come out before the NES.. or history would have to be rewritten...
Jesse Adams Nope, no matter when the NES comes out the SMS will always be passed over. The NES has way too many great and classic games. Zelda, Mario, Mega Man, just a few franchises that the SMS couldn’t stand up against.
@@_OCPGAMING not to me its kinda equal. And lets be honest the sms was more powerful. And I dont think gunstar Heros is on the nes and I dont think nes could handle it
When I revisit the SMS it's all about RASTAN ... awesome game (and system) 👍🎮
Totally agree love that game and the sound brings me back to when I was young and a seven 11 had a arcade. Use to spend whatever quarters I could scrounge
Great FM sound on Rastan for the SMS. Well balanced port. The arcade version was HARD tho
The Master System looked great.
I didn’t have one in the 80s. Only recently restored one and loving it. Excellent video thanks!
I just completed Phantasy Star on the Switch, it was the Sega Ages version. The quality of life enhancements were really good and I enjoyed the game.
The SMS was the first system I found in a throw out with 10 games and is my go to system. I love all the games and the art work on the boxes are amazing. Thank you John for another awesome video
Rescue Mission was dope and so was Rambo II, though I think my siblings and I played the most California Games

Great list. Kenseiden is one of my favorites and should get more love. Vigilante is a great looking port i just wished it used the boss voice at the end of each level.
Golvellius: Valley of Doom is a fun and unique adventure game by Compile that I don't think appeared on other systems - definitely worth a try
Like others have already said, Zillion was great! I still have notebooks with codes written for each room. Gangster town was a great light gun game too! Great system with so many good games that people who didn't own a master system can now discover.
I was definitely the weird kid with an SMS instead of the NES. I love the Master System. Spellcaster and Zillion all the way!!
I was in the same club. I still consider it one of my two or three favorite consoles, and there are more than a handful of games that I go back and play regularly. Regarding Phantasy Star, it is arguably THE best 8-bit jrpg, and was still considered one the best jrpgs all through the 16-bit era.
Great choices. I like Rocky, Monopoly, Ghouls and Ghosts, and Paperboy (a very accurate port).
You have been knocking these videos out of the park. Great content John.
Thanks for this. I’ve just started collecting Master System so I’m going to use this as a “collect first” list.
Phantasy Star is still one of my favorite games of all time! I still have all of my graph paper maps from when I was a teen.
Matt Desrochers I bought a used SMS back in the day just to play that game. Still one of my all time favorite RPGs.
@First Last I don't think I've ever been completely maxed out but I've definitely beaten the game with all 4 alive. You need to use heal spells and such.
@First Last I'm with you on Ocarina of Time as well. I beat that game to 100%. I even found all 100 gold skultulas! Loved that game.
Absolutely loved Spellcaster
I really like Putt and Putter on the Master System, it's a blast with friends.
I need to play more of the Sega Master System. Didn't own it as a kid, but now I can appreciate it as a pretty cool 8bit console.

Awesome video, John. I’ve looking at expanding my Master System library. I have the Mega Sg, and I’m excited.
I love the SMS. I would add to the list Kenseiden, Aztec Adventure and my favorite light gun game of all times Gangster Town.

I love how MS games look like as if Microsoft Paint drawings came to life.
You showed some of my favorite games, and I have yet to watch your other episodes on this topic but I also enjoyed the Alex kidd series

SHINOBI, My Hero, and Black Belt were my go to games!! Also loved Haunted house
I have the cartridge "PSYCO FOX" thats right, a misspelling variant perhaps??! PCB is authentic I opened it up.
Wonder Boy 2 ( Monsterland ) is my favorite on the SMS. All 3 original Wonder Boy games were great.
Good games all. The momentum mechanic always throws me off in psycho fox. R-type is great. Phantasy Star is a yearly play since I starting collecting for the Master System. Still looking for Ninja Gaiden. WB3 is great. Only WB game I have been able to beat so far.

Phantasy Star is fantastic. I didn't play it until long after it came out. This one really stands out compared to the original Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games. The Sega Ages remake respects your time but removing most of the grind (and a mapping system).
Some great games there, I may revisit those very soon!
Endure racer and action fighter are my 2 favs
Black Belt and Kung Fu Kid. Two of my favorite SEGA master system games of all times😎
Keep them coming john love the videos
Spellcaster, Mickey's castle of illusion, and bonanza bros were my faves
Space Harrier is my favourite Master System game-I played it quite a bit last night.....maybe for 30 minutes to an hour straight....
Should be a master system mini
I think this would be an amazing decision from Sega!
Very informative video to me. I bought my first Master System game after I got my Analogue Mega Sg. It was Double Dragon. I plan to get more. Great video John!
Kensendein, Alex Kid Shinobi World, Master of Darkness, Rescue Mission, Zillion 2, Outstanding Versions of: Castle of Ilusion, Sonic the Hedgehog
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World was great, with a quick nod as well to Asterix and Rescue Mission
Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars is one I go back to a lot. It’s not Miracle World, but it’s still fun.
Where it all began for me
Im glad you enjoyed WonderBoy 3, if theres one thats my favourite it continues to be The Ninja (Sega Ninja in japan) still one of my all time favourite games
Some SMS games I still play:
R.C Grand Prix
Buggy Run
Castle of Illusion
Asterix and the Great Rescue
Great List! The only game I would add is Golden axe warrior.
Great Volleyball is one of the most neglected, but still awesome sports games ever. I don't think theres ever been a good proper volleyball game since. PenguinLand was another favourite.
psycho fox is my fav on the master system it rocks ;p
Psycho Fox is a great game. You have to beat it, the ending scene and the credits are totally worth it.
I'm missing Astérix (the first one) in your list, but you US guys might not be too familiar with this French comic character.
whats really going on in seatel
Love R-Type on the Master System, this and the C64 are my favourite versions. Kinda sad that Mega Drive never got a release.
I wish there was a way to play old light gun games on new tv's
Gaming Now just get an old tube tv man. Everything is better on it when it comes to retro games.
It's true that the Master System is overlooked in the US, but it was more popular in Europe. I've seen European's on youtube who say the Master System was more popular in Europe than the NES. Loved R Type on the Master System. You check out the zx spectrum version from Electronic Dreams. Yet another top video.👍👍
The Master System would have been, by far, the best console on the 8-bit generation if it had had the same video library that the NES had. And this is coming from a Nintendo fan who thinks the Super Nes is far superior to the Genesis / Mega Drive. It is a pity that it sold so badly in America.
I got R type as a free game courtesy of sega
Love your enthusiasm on every video you upload. Have a great day man !
the SMS had the best Rambo and Ghostbusters ports. we got it new for christmas 1988. safari hunt was the superior pack in light gun game. snail was the best game though.
Almost all of the SMS light gun games are better oddly enough.
There's just not enough love for snail. Tthe fact that it was free and it was hidden made it so much cooler than stupid Mario brothers......ok. Maybe that's a bold over estimation on my part. But it was fun to find.
@@travisolson5843 You almost had me for a second. lol
Most underrated SMS game = Zillion.
@Ben DC4L True, but only one MOST underrated one. ;)
I think the Sonic titles on the SMS deserve more recognition than they get. They're stand alone titles rather than watered down Megadrive ports. I actually prefer Sonic 1 & 2 on the Master System to the 16 bit versions. The games were more Marioesque and focused on exploration and skill rather than blind speed. Really pushed the hardware in terms of graphics and sound too.
I’ve honestly only played this system once. We got a Nes from a yard sale as a kid for our first system followed by the genesis complety skipped this system
Ys
Kenseiden is an awesome side scroller. The training areas in that game will make you pull your hair.
monkey man so true
Yes, I agree very awesome game.
Extremely underrated game! Castlevania meets ninja gaiden.
John do you have and do you play snesmsu games in my opinion that is the best way to play snes games with msu patch awesome sound track on each game. Id love to see you do a review and visit snesmsu. Thanks John.
I’ve the Master system Version of Ghostbusters I would love 2 play it sometime
Love the master system, but in my area unfortunately the games are pretty overpriced, thus my personal library is pretty small. I know this because they sit and sit and sit some more. Swear they have been in some of the stores for 5 years or more. I have R-Type though and it is a beauty of a game.
Phantasy Star was the absolute cutting edge. Part 2 is legend but compared to what the NES had this game blew it away graphics wise
Double Dragon
It was great to have a two player double dragon, but damn it has some flicker to it on the MS
John don't forget about all the good imports from Europe!!! Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Sonic games
Great video the Master System was my main system as a kid. What is also great about the master system is that if you have a RetroTink and a pair of HD retrovision cables, the system looks great on a flat screen.
Great video John I love my Master System, I play Moonwalker, R-type, Chase HQ and Hang on among others.
I love this revisit mini-series, i discovered many gems. Many thanks for diving into your collection and picking up these gems. Many thanks.
More please. I have master system on my everdrive but I haven't explored it yet.
I have been playing astro warrior alot here lately. I think the master system is very under rated.
Alex Kid In Miracle World
Liking this “revisiting” series. Didn’t even realise I’d played Ninja Gaiden until the memories came flooding back to me during the video
Master system is really really fun to collect for. Couldn't afford to go real console with it. But did go with an off brand SMS to Genesis cart converter. Works good enough for me. :)
