You can go to the town dump area yard refuse and look for Pineneedles sometimes you can find whole truckloads of (Pine-needles) and put them underneath your (electric fence) if you can’t find them that way put a ad in craigslist.
Can you have too strong of a fencer? I currently only have about 20 acres under management and in addition to cattle I like to have goats, chicken and pigs behind (different) nettings. I find netting especially when pig root up onto it shorts out my 4 joule fencer. Im definately upgrading my fencer. I think an 18 joule fencer ought to do for now but I dont mind spending more now for something I wont outgrow. Something like Galagher's M10,000i fencer which has 100 stored joules! I am worried that on a small fence it will be too powerfull and kill stock. Is that a valid concern? If fence is too strong do you have trouble moving animals past where fence was?
I have had 3 Parmak 12 volt fence chargers fail on me. 2 ground rods over 6 feet in the ground, fully charged batteries, cover to keep out of rain, all plastic insulators, still failed. I need something else.
Greg, I have some fields that don’t have access to electricity. What are your thought on solar units and suggestions on which ones might be best? Solar units would need to service fields up to 20 acres.
Mark Tsirigos Parmak makes a great solar charger. I’ve had excellent results with mine and they seem to last. They have a 25 mile unit for about $200. It’s worth every penny. I will say that I’ve never heard anyone say they were happy with the cheap-o’s from TSC.
They only have 1 year warranty on their remote s with kencove and reduced their warranty - my remote died in 9 months and the fencer in 2. Can't recommend kencove...

Steel is a conductor, insulators can fail or get broken. Much harder to keep your entire energized when using steel posts. We use Timeless posts which are non conductive.
I have one of the Stafix 18000i 18 Joule chargers that I bought from Timeless Fence about a year ago. This thing has been nothing but trouble and a waste of $1200 - it is barely enough to handle several hundred yards of 12.5 gauge metal wire let alone my entire 46 acres. Ground is good. No shorts. Massive drop in voltage every several hundred feet. Cattle don't respect it making it useless but I cannot blame them as I cannot even feel a shock from it. Polywire is completely useless as it goes from 9000 volts to nothing in a very short section (several hundred yards). Are you getting kickbacks from Stafix to recommend their junk or did I get a bum unit that they need to replace before the 2 year warranty expires?
Galvanic corrosion because dissimilar metals--that's what we get. Now driving those grounds into my rockpile will be interesting, at least it's not limestone-which could require drilling.

We use the Cyclops chargers. Fuller fence supply in Dothan will repair them if necessary. Great company and great equipment.

I have to use steel/rebar posts. Rocks. Without hammering, there are many places we cant get a post in the ground.
They claim that the solid fiberglass posts will drive in rocky ground. I've not tried it yet. Mine is all rocky too.

Do you use the bare 12 gauge galvanized wire or double insulated galvanized wire to link the ground rods together? Thank you.
Black double insulated wire works best, it allows you to see it and periodically check your ground rod clamps to make sure they are tight

I have never had any success with Parmak chargers. Stafix or Cyvlops are the only chargers we use.
What’s the electric bill when fence is steady zapping vegetation?
Chargers even zapping vegetation use about the same amount as a light bulb.

Does that charger display the kv it’s putting out?

Mine tests at 16k volts. It kinda hurts, haha. I got too much on my little 10 acre pasture. I think it's 8 joules output.
I have a little over 10. I was thinking about 8 joules

Sounds like you unfortunately bought a bum unit. I do not get any kickback from Stafix.

Ground rods are the other side of the circuit. What touches the hot wire on the fence closes the circuit with the ground rod and gets zapped.
