As a 40+ year HR professional, the problem with race and gender based programs such Affirmative Action, DEI, by whatever name business chooses to call it in employment is how it is implemented and how it’s success is measured. In business, managers count to determine success. They count production, sales, attendance, revenue, expenses, cash flow, profit, and how many women and “minorities” are employees. As such, Caucasian males are undesirable. I asked a DEI manager if DEI programs applied to Caucasian males. I reminded him that HR is staffed in most companies by 80% to 100% women and only 9% RN’s are men, etc. What I got was a five minute word salad which never answered my question. The answer should have been “yes”. People in business see what I experienced. Also there are horror stories about DEI training in which Caucasian men are stereotyped as gender and race bigots and must change their ways. Then all will be right with the world. Consultants might want to start listening to those getting the short end of stick in how DEI is managed.
