    Managed to buy two of these 100-400s along with a canon 5D MK III all for $350. The 100-400s are in need of some serious pedicures but none of the glass seems damaged, thank you for providing this video so I don’t go into the disassembly blind!

    Before you try this: Please note that the position of the eccentric collars of the IS unit, which you're told to mark, are the adjustment setting for this one (!) specific IS unit. If you swap the IS unit, the marked positions of its collars are no use at all. The new IS unit has to be adjusted into the existing optical system on an optical bench. Without the expensive but necessary equipment, you won't be able to adjust the new IS unit and as a result the image quality will suffer immensly.

    Very nicely done. This is by far, the clearest video I have found on this lens. I am particularly interested in knowing if there is a a way to clean interior surfaces between the groups by putting swab sticks through the various slots and holes in the inner barrels. Mine has some fungus and I would like to see if it can be cleaned well enough to warrant a full disassembly.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  5 лет назад +1

      I don't think that is possible to clean the lens surfaces without completely disassembling the lens.

  • @joeldoxtator9804
    @joeldoxtator9804 5 лет назад

    This helped a lot on building a hypothesis on why this lens gets so damned dusty inside. Just looking at the pump mechanism for zooming I can tell that the possibility of dust coming from the bottom of the lens is fairly low. I am willing to bet that most of this internal lens dust is actually coming from the slow deterioration of all those sliding mechanical tubes inside the lens. Upon further inspection of my own copy of this lens the dust specs in the internal lenses do appear to be metallic. This leads me to believe that a very careful application of some sort of non bleeding grease to the slides may help prevent future buildup. The only question is what type of grease?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  5 лет назад +4

      I think the dust is coming through the middle of the lens, next to the ring which you can use to tighten the zooming. The bottom of the lens is completely closed when mounted on the camera, so it is not possible that the dust comes through that hole. (I don't think that when you zoom to 400mm, the air gets sucked through the camera, through the bottom of the lens.)
      I don't think that the dust is metallic, if that would be the case, then it should scratch the surface of the lens elements when you clean them.
      As grease I use fine mechanic grease, which you can order it from here: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sop=15&_nkw=lens+grease&LH_BIN=1

    hello, I have dust on the lens of the canon 100-400 (model 1) do you think that we can disassemble the glass (using the large disassembly rubbers), without disassembling the electronic part?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  2 года назад

      If the dust is between the first and the second lens element, then it is quite easy to clean it, I have a video about it.

  • @Toooomy_Boy

    There's 1 of these reasonably priced near me but there's fungus throughout the whole lens. Think its a worth it to try and disassemble and clean the elements?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  Год назад

      The risk is that there is fungus between a molded lens element. Those lens elements are like two lens "glued" together, and can be fungus between them which can't be cleaned.

    Great video. I'm just trying to get the confidence to dismantle my lens to see what's wrong. How can you tell whether the IS unit is functioning properly or not? Thanks

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  3 года назад

      Mount the lens on the camera, make sure that the IS is turned on, zoom to 400mm, look through the viewfinder, and press the shutter button halfway, and then the IS should start, and on for about 5 sec. You should see the difference when the IS is on or off. Alternatively, turn on the IS (press the shutter button halfway), then move the lens up and down or left and right... then you change directions, you should see a little bit of lag caused by the IS.

      @@CamerasLensesEtc Hey, thanks for the detailed disassembly video. I have the EF100-400l mki lens adapted to R7 using canon control ring adapter. The IS on my lens behaves a bit strange. Here is the sequence of events:
      1. The IS on Lens runs for some time when I initially turn on the camera
      2. The lens IS stop abruptly and does not turn on even if I half press the shutter
      3. I will have to toggle the IS switch off/on or I should enter and exit the gallery for the IS to work
      4. The IS does kick in after I do the above steps, but stop again after some time
      I know when the IS is on or off based on the sound, looking through the EVF, or even by directly looking at the lens element from front.
      Please advise on what I need to do to fix this issue.

      Usually shops charge for checking your lens, so even if they can't repair it, you have to pay. I wouldn't use their service, because they have no incentive to repair your lens. Did they let you know which part of the lens is faulty and which repair part they can't get? (If not, most likely they wasn't even checked the lens.)
      I would highly recommend to ask them first if they charge a fee for checking the lens.
      Anyway, you can buy the brand new USM motor on ebay for 220USD, and it is relatively easy to replace that, so I would recommend to do the job by yourself.

    I also have the zoom lock issue, the zoom lock ring barely turns at all. I would definitively appreciate a video on how to fix this. Thanks

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  5 лет назад +2

      Currently I don't have Canon 100-400L lens which has stucked zoom lock ring.
      My suspicion is that some of the balls inside the ring fallen from its place, and that is causing the problem. The solution is remove the screw covers from the side of the ring, remove the four screws which are holding it together, then you can separate the parts of bearing. Be careful, because the small bearing balls will fall off. Remove all of them, check which one caused the problem. You can put them back by putting grease on the side of the lens part which holds the balls, and they will be stuck there. I done it once, it is quite long to repair it. The other solution is to replace the whole zoom lock mechanism, which is easier but pricier. Just start to disassemble the lens at the front, and you can remove the zoom lock easily. Maybe if you remove the zoom lock first, you would see the ball which causing the problem inside the zoom lock.

    Went out and bought nice 000 and 00 screwdrivers just for this. Only got to 3:35 before the screws became impossible to remove. I don't know if its because my lens is old or if the previous owner torqued everything down way too tight but I could feel the heads stripping and gave up.

    •  Год назад +1

      Old comment but for anyone who might stumble on this: I had an issue like that when removing the screws from top side of the lens. I was not following this video but the one where the lens is opened from the front end to get access to the front lens.
      I got the silver ring and red ring out (first step when going for the front lens/disassembly from top) but then got briefly stuck on the second step which was removing three black philips screws in a deepish black plastic hole. I stripped the philips screw and it became a round hole impossible to open with traditional methods. I spent a day on it, applying few drops of WD-40, hitting it with screwdrivers but nothing seemed to work.
      On the next day I ended up drilling a 2mm deep hole into the screw and hitting it gently with a small torx screwdriver and a hammer to make new shape for the screw hole. And lo and behold, I got the screw open!
      Obviously drilling and hammering a lens is something you want to think twice before doing it. Also, the said screws had extra thick bases so I felt confident in the drilling operation. Anyway, it worked great, got the lens open and cleaned it inside out.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc

      First I would check if the lens can read the actual zoom value correctly: take a few photos in different zoom settings (100mm, 200mm, 300mm, 400mm), and check the EXIF in the photos if those values are correct. I had lenses on the past which couldn't read the zoom setting, and that caused focusing problems. If this is the problem, then check the zoom brush, cable and connector is they are not damaged.
      If this is working fine, then you can do this: Clean the focus strip in the USM motor. You can use this disassembly video to remove the USM motor, then view my video on cleaning the focus strip on Canon 17-85mm lens. Disassembling the USM motor is very similar.

    I'm guessing the lens in this video had been apart previously. Every screw on my lens was a nightmare to break loose. I didn't have a single screw other than the trim ring screws that came out easily. Was in constant fear of stripping the heads of the screws they were so stubborn. I am an electronics technician with 30 years of experience. Disassembling one of these lenses is not for the faint of heart. I would not attempt opening one of these lenses up unless you are very confident in your abilities and have the right work space.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  5 лет назад

      Yes, the lens was disassembled before.
      I find it easy to disassemble most of the lenses, however, there are some which I have to be careful not to damage the head of the screw. For example, the screws of the USM motor and manual focus tube of the Canon 24-105/4L is tightened too much, and I have to be very careful when I'm disassembling that.
      The right size screwdriver helps a lot. I have different kinds of PH000 and PH00 screwdrivers, and I choose the one which fits the screw the best.

    I have the zoom lock issue (with ball bearings) that already scratched and surface, and the zoom is very hard to move. Are you familiar with this issue? I know I can manage the disassembly, do you think I can fix this myself?

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  5 лет назад +1

      I haven't had this problem before, usually the opposite happens (when the zoom mechanism doesn't hold the lens). It is very easy to disassemble the zoom lock mechanism (it is not needed to disassemble the lens like I did it in the video). There are few covers on the zoom lock, remove them, and remove the screws underneath them. However, when you disassemble the zoom lock mechanism the bearing / small balls will fall off. You might try to remove all the balls, then put some grease on the side of the lens where the balls were, and stick the balls in the grease. The problem maybe that one of the balls from the bearing is not in its place, and that causing the stiff zooming and scratches.

    • @CamerasLensesEtc
      @CamerasLensesEtc  5 лет назад

      Another thing to check: Remove the front lens ring by removing the three small screws which are holding it. Then, remove the lens barrel from the front of the lens, then there is one screw which holds the next lens barrel which is the manual focus / zoom lock mechanism. Towards the rear of the lens element, there is a metal ring which contracts and expands when the zoom is tightened / smoothened. That is the ring which can scratch the surface of the lens barrel. Originally there is a thin velvet on the surface of the ring, and after a while it wears down. You can adhere painters tape on it. I'll do a video of it soon.

    I presume you have been talking through out this, can you subtitle it please, I am deaf. Also, could you list the 'screwdrivers' you have used to include head sizes & types and tool brand names ( I am assuming you are using good quality tools that last). Thanks

    • @CamerasLensesEtc

      I rarely talk during part where I show how to disassemble the lens. You can do it watching the video without audio. Screwdrivers: I buy the cheapest screwdrivers from eBay, links are in the description below. Most of them are quite good quality.
      The black PH000 screwdriver is easy to crack (but the head is perfect for smaller screws). I ordered many pcs of it (very cheap), so if I brake the head, then I always have spare ones.

      this lens is notorious for getting internal dust due to the pumping zoom design. One can disassemble and clean it themselves, or send it to a cleaning service or Canon. Some people prefer to do it themselves. This is "why"
