I'm going to do a video one day of the people that influenced me in the back of my mind when I started doing youtube videos, he's one of them. Bob Ross, Mr. Rogers, The Woodright's shop Roy Underhill, and a local to Charlotte radio guy named John Hancock.
I heard a master painter once teach that a good painter can always pick up a brush, but a great painter knows when to put it down. The most amazing artists know how to embrace imperfection and when it comes to drawing and other arts, that's something I just can't do.
I stumbled on your videos. I’m not into electronics, and don’t play video games, but I love the old machines. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your channel. Your years of experience definitely show. And I LOVE seeing these old arcade games restored. So satisfying. Awesome work brother
Nice work looks 10 to me. As soon as you said Bob ross all I could see is a big old tree. In that top corner. Great work guys as always can’t wait for the rest. 👍🔧🔧. Bob.
What a fantastic result. Really outstanding work. Each destroyed playfield offers up a unique set of problems/issues. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to restoring a tired, beaten up playfield. You’ve got to make it up as you go along a fair bit of the time. Just excellent work. As you said, most folks would have parted this game out. You have saved it, and it’s now ready to rock for decades to come. Very enjoyable video Ron and Joe. Thanks for posting.
Definitely a 10! I'm shocked how the wood repair paint job totally blends in once the arch was put back up top. To me it looks 100% natural like the rest of the bare wood areas up there. Fantastic job!
Have you ever tried wood restoring products for the bare wood that is damaged like on this machine? I know they don't always work well, but sometimes it can bring that staining around. The sanding does help a lot to blend it in and made a huge difference :) The thing I love about your restorations is that you do know when to stop and leave alone. The clear and rewaxing tends to help everything blend. I think the game has a story to tell, and if you do too much it loses its history and the story is lost with it.
Yes. A 10 for sure. I had a Gottlieb 2001 that had even worse mouse damage that had to the have entire woodgrain part of the lower playfield painted the same way you did. I was happy with the final result and found it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. You did a fine job showing people how to get that effect. FWIW that woodgrain color paint job is easier to make look good than most light solid colors.
I must confess, up until a couple of years ago (I'm in my 40s), I had no idea who Bob Ross was, it was some American friends that told me about him. He just wasn't a thing here in Western Australia when I was growing up. FTA here was basically Aussie shows and British shows with some American shows thrown in (Such as "You Can't Do That On Television", and "Square One Television").
He was in the military, and his commander was always yelling at him (he had an office job in the military) or had that drill Sargent vibe. So his calm demeanor on the show was a reaction to that. He would get a lunch break for 30 minutes, and would go out in the parking lot and set up an easel, and got good enough that he could be finished before his lunch break was over. Then he'd sell the pictures to earn a little extra money. of course that perfectly trained him to be the perfect television painter, weird how things work like that.
It's looking great there Ron.i had one question for you Ron and correct me as well. I was thinking when you were sanding the playfield in the upper left hand corner. Couldn't you use like an oscillating tool where you're using like a blade with some double sided tape and some fine grip sandpaper. Cause I know myself having sausage fingers for small spaces. And just gently sand away what needs to be removed. It's like those professional painters painting a car. Or Ross painting but in sanding. But it's a job ŵell done. I'm proud of you there.😊
@@LyonsArcade it was just an after thought when I had seen you or your brother hand sanding. You do what you feels right. And sometimes you have to do it by hand. The video's are 10's in my book.
You always amaze me Ronnie. I know you say you're not an art guy but you touch pf's up so nicely. It's funny, I personally can't even draw a stick figure, ZERO art skill. I was always a numbers and "fix it" nerd instead lol but what is so amazing is artist or not you have an eye for this kinda thing and maybe the camera helps for once but I see things as well, something looking more "green" or "orange" it's really cool to me cuz I know how NOT an art person I am but I can def see exactly what you mean! Left Donnie a comment too on his vid earlier, y'all are so cool and friendly, I appreciate it so much! You guys had me rolling with that alternator video I saw today!! Thanks again Ronnie (and Joey ofc too!)!! :)
Awesome job !!!! I wish I had the eye and skill you have for color matching the touch up paint !! The bare wood section looked you repaired looked great !!! I would have been scared to attempt that !! Thank you for another awesome video !!!
WOW! I'm tempted to send my SO76 over to you for a make over! BTW, I was able to get a new hole shield from PBR even though Gottlieb doesn't have a part number for it.
Great work, as always. Now, the one shadowy spot on the right would keep pulling my eye if I were to play it. That said, I know you have to have a cutoff point somewhere. If it were me, and if it weren't for the tax sticker, I'd use white epoxy appliance enamel on the arch. That is tricky paint to work with. You'd have to get all your layers done in 20 minutes or whatever, or you'd have to wait a week. That makes reassembly take longer since you'd need a week to reassemble the parts painted with that (unless you have a very delicate touch.
JOE CLASSIC, do you spray the whole entire playfield with Cleat Coat "satin finish" or only the wood color portion of the playfield? don't use Clear Coat Gloss only satin finish
That's a good call, considering the whole playfield had crazing, paint loss, etc. Doing the whole thing will lock down what is there and preserve it from further deterioration. You can indeed do more paint touchups over your first clearcoat.. clear coat again, and it'll pop nicely.
The paint job looks great. What size brush did you use? The new posts and plastics looks like a new machine. I can't wait to see you play the game. I put new plastics on the time warp for my dad and he found the manual and I have it back to 5 ball for him. Thanks Ronnie for filming and I will see you on the next video.
@15:52 -- He's officially lost it, Folks. I NEVER heard Mr. Ross (RIP) ever talk about coloring pinball playfields! This is more of a "Tool Time Tim" moment! Oops! I might have jinxed Ron....
Great channel, its funny when you ask what's wrong with it....its broke. Also the usual take on micro farad caps, funny. You got any more retro arcade classic repairs in the pipeline, asteroids, defender, galaga, galaxian, starwars etc?. You got star trek next generations or terminator pinballs??? Great games. Keep up your great work. Cheers
there are one or two stand up radios,.from the eastern US, that may have broadcast Fireside Chats? I wanna see a Konami Rally X machine resurrected. i understand that most were converted with some stickers and a firmware update. Rally X and smoke puffs are incredible. very random a lot of intermittent luck made a difference
Because it's wet paint. You can't use a ruler on wet paint... .you would do much better, but you would take 10 times longer and then have to tell the customer "Hey that piece of crap game you brought me, I repainted this small area at the top, it took 10 hours to get straight so we'll start out with that part costing 700 bucks" and that would be the end of your playfield painting business. OR, you go the best you can, paint the stuff on, draw the lines on it by hand, spray some clear and keep on keeping on. Only downside is people on youtube tell you you don't know what you're doing or they can draw lines better than you can.
After a cutaway or two my eyes cannot pick up where you repainted. I've fallen into the "search for perfection" trap too many times and you're right Ron, learn to leave well enough alone. Great job fellas, as always!
You're like the Bob Ross of pinball repair painters. You even have a steady hand painting the black edge lines. Very much impressed by that!

GREAT JOB with the wood grain paint work.. looks sweet as!! You've got a good eye for colours too with your paint matching. Very impressive indeed!
Thank you for watching!
A lot of people would've parted that out as bad as it looked, but what a transformation. Looking good.
I think a lot of times yeah we end up working on stuff other people would have parted! We try to give it a little more life.
What a fantastic result. Really outstanding work. Each destroyed playfield offers up a unique set of problems/issues. Ron Ross strikes again. Great job! Thanks for taking the time to film it, we know you didn't have to.
hahaha I knew you'd understand!
Incredible transformation Ron. That brown top area came out WAY better than I expected it to. Two thumbs up.
Definitely a 10! I'm shocked how the wood repair paint job totally blends in once the arch was put back up top. To me it looks 100% natural like the rest of the bare wood areas up there. Fantastic job!
Like the song from the group Alabama, close enough to perfect.
Ron, your brushwork is getting tight!
Came out great! 👍
Colors pop a lot better with the before-and-after pictures.

Yup those light colors are very hard to get right, I hate doing yellows!
Great transformation - I can imagine the customer’s reaction and no doubt that’s one of the best parts about being able to do what you do.
I think its amazing, how much better it looks now. Another great job. Grade 10 , based on what you started with. 🙂
I'll give you a big 10/10, with those new plastics ,post and rubbers looks like a new machine
Fantastic work Ron! Where's the "little happy tree"?
It's the whole left top of the playfield :)
another classic!!!!!!! i love the music too ..JOE your a legend!!!

Great job gentlemen, as usual. 10 out of 10 from me. 👍 This game is another on my own bucket list… one day… Regards

JOE CLASSIC, do you spray the whole entire playfield with Cleat Coat "satin finish" or only the wood color portion of the playfield? don't use Clear Coat Gloss only satin finish
Usually just the parts I paint, but since I repainted everything on this I sprayed the whole thing.
@@LyonsArcade Thanks, I always thought you sprayed Clear Coat GLOSS, i never thought you would have used Clear Coat SATIN Finish

10 out of 10!
How do you remember where everything goes when reassembling?
We lay the stuff on the side roughly where it goes on the playfield. We use another pinball machine as a place to lay the stuff out on that glass.
So having TWO pinball machines is the key to success haha ;)

The next time you have staining on unpainted wood, you could try some oxalic acid. It's toxic stuff but works wonders to remove organic stains.
