    I just sold my 1190 Advrnture R and was in the market for a middleweight. I test rode the 850 GS and the 790 Adventure back to back. Both great bikes, but spot on with this report, the 790 is fantastic. The engine pulls amazingly and it feels so light, especially in comparison with the 850.
    One correction I would say is that there are some cracking deals to be had, I bought one and got a cracking price and in comparison to the 850 thousands less.
    Another good point is there is now quite a long list of extras available, which are on my xmas wish list. A real winner and pretty much agree with everything said.

    So I bought the S rather than the R after doing some research. Key points: the R is not stable at high speed 70mph+ compared to the S (high mudguard maybe?). The S is as capable off-road for most riders: only those looking for extreme capability would benefit from the R. I have had 3 GSAs and I love the one I still have, but at 68 years of age I'm now struggling to pick it up (repeatedly) and it has become a confidence issue. KTM 790 Adventure, no bother (so far)!

      @@everythinggaming7938 Yes, I know that - in most cases, anyway - ( TMF, and others, get quite a few of their long term test bikes straight from the manufacturer ) I just feel that when an adventure/offroad bike is lent out to a motovlogger the manufacturers should be prepared to cover the risk of the bike getting a bit bent while being ridden down the lanes. After all, quite a few of the motovloggers give the bike a bit of a caning on the roads, and there's, probably, a higher risk of seriously damaging the bike then, don't you think. Both the dealership and the manufactuer benefit from more sales. Just my opinion, anyway.

    Great review Mr Chops, the most pertinent yet to me, as I want a bike for touring holidays that can handle the odd gravelly track in the hills, not elephantine, and still be fun to ride. I've been riding a KTM 1090 Adventure for the last couple of years, and it's a great bike, but it would be nice if it was an inch lower and a few kilos lighter. So next year when it's time to change I'll try this and the Tenere, maybe also the Guzzi TT850. The 850 GS just seems too heavy, the same weight as my 1090 KTM but a lot less power.

    • @r6ymy

      Actually I couldn't wait until next year, picked up my 790 a couple of weeks ago. Got a great deal on a new one at £9500. And at 5'7" it's the perfect size for me.

      I love this bike. Been doing 120 to 150 miles a day since I bought it a week ago. Plenty of power on the steep hills in Kona. Good stability on the twisties and comfortably takes the bumps on the many crappy roads. The dirt and rocky road out to the beach is effortless. This is the only bike that the big island would ever need. One bike to rule them all. Form follows function so in a week I have gone from being skeptical of it’s looks and sound to loving both.

  • @HippoDrones
    @HippoDrones 5 лет назад +4

    I love the idea of this and the R version... but seeing the dash in your close up of it beginning to show the signs of condensation under the glass that the 390 also suffers with, I can't understand why KTM have not addressed this, especially seeing as it is a bike that is nearly 3 times the price of the 390.Unless KTM fix this I can really imagine it will dent their sales sadly.

    I've taken my 390 Duke up steeper muddy slopes and exposed rocks than you've taken this Adv. Honestly, the 790S is designed for way rougher and technical terrain than you mention.
    There's no need to buy the R or Rally models unless you want to ride really hard.

    Very nice review as usual sir chops. Front looks a little odd maybe but I'm sure it'll grow on you & it's obviously a decent bike regardless. I'm looking more and more at smaller bikes from all classes these days. I think it may be the way to go as you can have so much more fun rinsing a smaller bike as opposed to tickling a big one. If it was properly spec'd in terms of light weight, decent brakes & suspension with a characterful 45ish bhp engine, a 250 or 400 would be ample & I'd be first in line.

    Great review again Chops thanks, its a nice bike but I feel that the BMW f850 GS is a better bike plus the build quality seems better. Will be good to see your review on the R and make a decision then but if you add on all the extras to the KTM price would be similar, the residual value of the GS will also be better.

  • @iamtherealzombie
    @iamtherealzombie 5 лет назад +3

    KTM's habit of charging extra to unlock stuff that's already installed on the bike is a large part of why I bought an S1000R instead. I got my 2017 fully loaded (QS, forged wheels, dynamic suspension) for 4k CAD less than the Super Duke R (and that's even before I paid $300 to unlock the extra modes). It's true that the S1KR is missing a bit of character compared of a big v-twin but not 4 grand less.
    KTM, if you're going to put the hardware on the machine regardless, don't charge us extra for the getting to use it.

    Umm...No mention that the seat has two height settings dependant on simply which notches you slot the front onto on the tank. That channel above the front of the seat shows you had it on its lowest. Being your height, with your long legs, you will have found it marginally better perhaps on the higher placement. Glad to see you took the bugger off-road.

    hardly a bike for the vertically challenged with its 830/850mm seat. It's for more touring style riders who like "off-road" whenever it comes into the equation. The low weight distribution, its fuel down low, helps in off-bitumen excursions. Great seat heights for normal height guys. Anyone around 5'8" (173cms) or shorter will still only have one leg on the ground when stopped. 180/183cms (in boots) is perfect both feet down for total confidence on surfaces such as gravel. The great thing is even the S version has 233mm ground clearance, around 240mm with more off road biased tread which equals the Tenere 700. The seat, the tyre tread, bigger screen all contribute to making it the better of the two versions on road

People assume this is a road bike but its more capable than the Tenere 700 for example. just switch tires for knobblies and you are good to go right where the R model goes. 99% of the riders wont make a difference! :D

    Looks like a substantial bit of kit, and surely more practical than it's older siblings.
    It's looking like manufacturers are adhering to the fact that the middle weight adventure bikes are actually more usable in reality, also taking into account the price of these things they make more sense financially.
    The 1260 Ducati Multistrada, 1250 BMW GS Adventure, 1290 KTM Super Adventure are all really a thing of luxury!

      Code Name Noob the t7 cp2 engine is very well proven in the mt07 which has sold in huge numbers and been known to do 80,000 miles. The 790 duke has already had engine issues. All KTM seem to have issues..and not to do big miles without problems. So, I can actually say that the t7 will be much more reliable than the 790. Yamaha top the reliability charts and have always been known for that. KTM are somewhere near the bottom. Not for me. I have done an 11500 and a 5300 mile tour on my current ride..Yamaha mt09 tracer.
