Loving this series of videos! Really happy that you ended up being so pleasantly surprised by this one! I am actually thinking about re-reading this series and giving it the proper attention it deserves, because I felt the same as you about book 1, but then it all went downhill after I left too long between instalments and started to lose track of plot inticacies and details. Caeden remains one of my favourite characters though, he has suuuuuch an interesting journey! Hope the rest of the series will be hits for you as well, happy reading! 🤩
Yeah this is a real danger for me and why I'm hoping that I manage not to leave too long between the books! I do love Caeden and I am by far the most interested in the future of his storyline 😍
You should do more of this vlog format, Grace, it's really enjoyable to follow you while you 're reading the book. I just finished the Raven's Mark trilogy by Ed McDonald (I loved it !) and I think your video just gave me enough curiosity to start the Licanius trilogy. It seems totally different from Raven's Mark (which is grimdark fantasy but surprisingly romantic as well) so that will be a good variation in my reading. I thought you only had 1 cat but I saw 2 in the video ! 🐈⬛🐈
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!! I will at least have one of these vlog format videos per month in this series! I have heard some good things about Raven's Mark as well 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, and can understand why people like it. For me, I found the story and characters to be average. While the main characters were likeable, the main three felt indistinguishable personality-wise even though they had different subplots. I'm also not the biggest fan of quest fantasy. And for some reason, the plot didn't grab me the way I hoped. And I think that just comes to personal taste as I can't point to anything wrong with the plot. I think the reason why people are so-so on this series is that it does have a feeling of classic fantasy, and more exciting stuff has come out in recent years. For example, the Green Bone Saga feels a lot more exciting because of how different it is. And I think the character work is average at best, and can see why character driven readers might not enjoy this series. I'm about 50/50 when it comes to needing plot or character driven books. I just need a good and engaging story. Sometimes the characters drive that (say Robin Hobb's books) and sometimes the plot (Mistborn would be good example).
Even more with the Wheel of Time comparisons, two of the bodies of water are identical to the Wheel of Time, Sea of Storms is generic enough that it gets the past, but the Aryth Ocean is way too specific. They're even on opposite sides of what they are in Wheel of Time.
I love JI's series. I think there are some very confusing, and slightly convoluted, plot lines that you have to be willing to stick with and tease out in order to like the trilogy. I'm on the side of Petrik and you though.
I’m also with you and Petrik. I really enjoyed this whole series. Th plotting is excellent and I also enjoyed many of the characters.
I am looking forward to seeing where the plot goes! There is some really good potential there
I’m with you, I enjoyed it more than most. Glad you liked it!
Yay, I'm glad you liked it too!

Yeah that's very fair, if this isn't to your personal taste then it is what it is!

Omg this is so funny because I was trying to think of where I'd heard that name before
Hi 👋 like ur video 🎥

I didn't find myself overly confused in this first book, but I can see how some of the plot set up could get complicated!
@@GraceDionneReads oh! They get complicated! 😂 in the best ways though! I loved puzzling it out!
