Well done, Wayne. This is a bit more complex than our worm bin, but it is a good design and this is a very thorough video. I'll probably give it a try! Thanks.
Thank You nov51947 for the compliment. It is a bit more complex but I really think that it's worth it in the long run. If this works out nicely, I'll probably build several! :) Is it possible to have too many worm castings? lol Let me know how it goes and if you make any changes, I'd love to get some feedback on your build.
You bet paperweightgirl, thank you for your support and much love. I appreciate you greatly. I also was able to talk to the owner of www.redwormsexpress.com and he gave me a 10% discount code to give out to my subscribers. Put the code "AWORLD4CHANGE" in upon checkout. I'll be doing an update video shortly.
Well done ***** ! This design does a great job of addressing some of the common worm bin challenges, like air flow, excessive moisture, and keeping the worms in the bin.
Thanks Patrick, I hope it really does work well! LOL I do have a question for you, do you ever think that the dirt can get too dry or do you find your max air flow bins get dried out too much? I also was able to talk to the owner of www.redwormsexpress.com and he gave me a 10% discount code to give out to my subscribers. Put the code "AWORLD4CHANGE" in upon checkout. I'll be doing an update video shortly.
***** I sometimes have to add additional water to make sure the bin contents don't get too dry. I don't have to add much, but people in arid climates might have more of an issue. Thanks for sharing the discount code. I've got more worms than I can handle now, but others will benefit from it. Thanks!
This is by far the best I have seen of the diy worm composters & I highly thank you!!! It is great!!! Just a couple of ideas that may or may not work LOL...can you put window screen over the spigot in order to keep it from getting clogged? Can you use screen in the bottom of the top bin to keep dirt in?? Maybe put holes in bottom one higher up?? Not much clearance for the liquid in the bottom is my thought
Diana Estep - All of your ideas are things I'm going to do to make the bin better the next time I build them, and thank you for paying such close attention to my build! Screen would be easy to hot glue it on the inside of the valve. Yes, a screen would be a great way to still allow air flow but maintain a better divider between. And I would raise the holes up another two inches as you suggested. That said, I really don't get much water draining through because I mist the worms and don't just dump in water. Great thoughts and thank YOU for your support and comments!
Thank You Larry, I appreciate the compliment brother! I hope it works out and I don't need to modify it too much...we will see. lol I'll keep you all updated.
If there were more than two thumbs per person it is super thumbs up on this video Wayne. I will try to make one though I am not handy but will follow what you did. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing this. God Bless! The thing is worms still creep me out LOL, but they are growing on me.
Well thank you so much for your kind and loving words TheNoviceGardener, that means so much to me! I only hope that I can inspire people to try new things and think outside of the box just a bit...I hope it's working. :) You're not the only one that they creep out I'm quite sure! LOL Don't worry, if you build this they can't get out very easy! haha Keep me updated on the project, God Bless.
Pro tip: Use a drill to drill out the corners of the waste material before cutting. That way you leave a rounded corner so it won't leave a weak spot to crack or split. It will be much, much more durable.
What a fine work of art! I wish I was as meticulous as you, but I am sure I can come up with something similar. It may not look as pretty, but it will function. Thanks for sharing this
How do you keep worms in the bin? You keep them fed and comfortable. You can also keep a light on if they are adventurous. The ring was a waste of time and almost your fingers. My worms wriggle along the ceiling of the bin completely upside down. That ring would do nothing and they definitely don't need a ramp to get out of the water, but it shows that your looking out for em!
I like to know more, such as was that a Rubbermaid tub, and it's volume, and that bottom white grid, was that a lighting cover on a suspended ceiling? What did you use on top of that as a starting bed? I really like your worm bin that you got from Larry's channel. Did you check your URL's after setting up your video?. I understand 3 -4 years have passed. good job on bin
What a great design! I am going to get all the materials this weekend. Would you perhaps not save on materials if you put the 2 rods the other direction? Is there any reason not to do this?
Thank YOU so much for your kind words FrozenEternity! If I were to make these with rods in the other direction, I'd go with 3 of them...and the weight of dirt would be too much for two bars to support on the long sides... Just my take. :) Also, there's no need for a lid or a ring, if you don't mind the top being open, and if you put a very small light above it during the night, to keep the worms in the bin. Best thing you can do is learn and have fun! :)
Very nice ***** ! I have been considering either making something similar or purchasing a Worm Factory 360. After watching your video, I might just try the DIY option.
Thanks Mike Manning! I personally don't have any experience with the one Factory 360, however I've heard a lot of negative about it in particular! I venture to say that it's not worth spending money on a commercially made worm farm. I really do hope that this video was helpful and informative! I will be doing an update on the worm bin shortly!
Yeah dafrogtoad, it did turn out fairly nicely....I'm really excited about it to be quite honest, I hope it works. :-) I also was able to talk to the owner of www.redwormsexpress.com and he gave me a 10% discount code to give out to my subscribers. Put the code "AWORLD4CHANGE" in upon checkout. I'll be doing an update video shortly.
They make wood burners with flat tips that work great for cutting plastic like that. It's a whole lot safer than using any kind of knife. Just a thought.
Thank You *****! I also was able to talk to the owner of www.redwormsexpress.com and he gave me a 10% discount code to give out to my subscribers. Put the code "AWORLD4CHANGE" in upon checkout. I'll be doing an update video shortly.
if the top is still not tite you could glue it down :-) I just cut a hole at the top and glurd the hole thing on there but im from nz and my not have the same brand as you. thank you so much for helping me not kill worms with water lol im so much happer for it and id say they are to!!!
Great ideas Amelia, thank you for them and for watching/commenting! It's my pleasure, which is why I have my YT channel. :) Let me know if there's any other type of videos you want me to cover, and I'll gladly attempt if possible.
Yes, Diana Estep....this will work for any size you want to make! Please let me know how they turn out. Oh, and I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I've been so very busy. Hopefully I'm starting to get caught up!
Wayne do you think this setup would work with a larger bin I'm talking about the largest bin that rubbermaid makes.... 4 times bigger than the one you have
MrSlowlow - Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, been swamped! No, I don't think it would work very well because the weight of the dirt would be too much for the long sides to hold w/out buckling. These bins are still going along nicely, but are really starting to show their age now. I think a larger tub, with long sides would probably bee too weak. If it's a rigid, heavy weight commercial tub....it should work. Hope this helps? Thanks again!
Nice video ***** I was looking into making a worm bin out of some material like this. Great instructional.would like to see some updates as your worms come in.
gardening4fun - I plan on giving you plenty of updates. The ones I have actually already came in, and I put them in the bin by now. I will do an update video in a couple of days for ya. :) Thank you so much for all the awesome sport!
Looking forward to it *****. I am actually looking into staying a pretty good size worm farm myself. Two fold purpose.one for the vermicompost and second and most important for a good food source for my fish in my #aquaponic gardening endeavors
Hey Wayne idk if someone asked already but instead of cutting out the bottom of the bin and leaving a cross with a grate on top why not just cut holes in the bottom of bin and then add lowest points to all four corners for worm tea
The video was well done its a nice bin system. Curious why you added overflow holes when you have a drain port? The liquid in the bottom of your bin would be leachate not worm tea. Worm tea is made from finished castings. Many people confuse the two. I would like to invite you and your fellow wormers to join our Facebook group "Vermicomposting - Worm Farming" we are a very active page of worm farmers of all ages from all over the world. Exchanging information and ideas. We have many helpful files to help at all levels. Hope to see you there.
Thanks for commenting and watching these videos Vicki! The holes in the side of the bin are simply for air circulation, not for overflow. I didn't know that about the liquid in the bottom of the worm bin, thanks! I'd love to be a part of your Facebook group, I'm not on FB much but I'll still come over there and check it out for sure, thank you!
The confusion on worm tea vs leachate is common. I thought you said overflow holes that's where the question in my mind came up. We had already decided on our comments that they were air holes. Thanks for the note back.
Easy project made hard and complicated. Just put valve on bottom bin for drain. Drill holes in bottom of second bin and air holes around sides for airflow. DONE! You can either just place any thing between the 2 bins to make more space in bottom or use the 2 pipes. No real reason for all that work cutting up that lid. Just put the lid on the worm bin.
Paul Ladendorf - LOL I know, right!? haha Thanks for watching and supporting my channel, I really appreciate it more than you will ever know. Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already, and please share any video you find to be informative! :)
In my opinion the lip around the top of bin is not needed. If the environment is not right the worms will get out . The cutout in the bottom is good. I used hardware cloth in mine as I tier my bins. Makes it easier for the worms to move from one bin to the next upper bin. Plus the fact the top ring will cause you problems when you want to dump the harvest
+yes350yes Also I might add if you get that much liquid your bin is way too wet. Ive been worming for years and never get any . All I get is some castings that may fall thru.
You dont need to do anything but take care of your worms properly. Set up two bins. Put bedding and leaves along with semi composted rabbit poo and the worms will do the rest. They can care less for your efforts with their home. I spent 10 bucks and keep the bin next to my bed. It is close to my pillow ... mind you if you take care of them you have no bugs no smells and no problems.
Way over kill. And a bit expensive. If you make it a place where they want to be, you have no problems. If you are trying to outsmart a worm by making a jailhouse for them you will find they can always find a way out. Just forget all that top construction and just cover it with gardening cloth or something breathable .Pop a bungie chord around it . I hate to poo poo your design but honestly. .You have turned a 5 dollar project into a 30 dollar project. If you are just trying to get worm tea out of it.. then just use the left over stuff when you screen out your worms and put it in a bucket with some water for a day or so. It ain't rocket science. Not to mention some knucklehead will end up cutting his or her finger off cutting that lid. If you want an honest opinion from your peers then here you have it. But I give you an A for effort and presentation was ok.
Well done, Wayne. This is a bit more complex than our worm bin, but it is a good design and this is a very thorough video. I'll probably give it a try! Thanks.

good idea to build. a lot of work in cutting the bottom i suggest drilling 3/8 holes all over the bottom ,leaves it stronger ?
+Matt Kelly - Yes, this is possibly true...and worth a try. Thanks for the comment man! :)
That's awesome. Simple but very useful.
metaltrooper62 - So far, they're working really nicely for me too...I'm loving them! :)

my red wigglers are coming in today! thanks for the tips!
+Steffani Farmer - AWESOME! Did you get the discount? Keep me updated!
+Wayne Meador No I didn't! what's the discount!? hopefully we won't have to buy more because ours will reproduce! This is our first time!
I think it's in the description of the video. I can't see it right now, but if you can't find it and need...get back to me! Steffani Farmer
