@@deaththekid922 It sucks. Games used to be so fun. Now it feels like your doing a chore or doing something u don't want to do. Like games used to be an escape. Now I play warzone and gta 5 online so much. Those 2 games have become my only games. It feels like im trapped. I look at my 360 I wanna play all thr games on it. But I think in my head I don't wanna sit here and do chores. Since ehen have games started to do that.
+altrogeruvah I'm surprised to be honest. I don't know why these toxic people are here or why they even watch the channel if the content is of no interest to them.
+Edmundo studios The nicest people always get the nastiest comments, because they seemingly make an easy target. Thankfully, they belong in the minority.
+Edmundo studios agreed as long as it stays healthy and does not become a obsession or addiction,im 35 and have been playing games since i was like 4 with the Atari,i catch alot of heat about being into gaming at my age but its my past time and hobby and has been since i as a young child, unless im around the right company i kind of try to hide it (especially at work) i don't want to be labeled i guess
***** Wow, couldn't have said it better myself. It's all about self-doubt / self-validation. I'm 28 and I still play my Saturn and Dreamcast when I'm not working. Just because someone seemingly has a grownup life, doesn't mean he is a grownup. Aspiring to be a grownup does not entail being one.
Why are people saying it's called growing up or whatever? What does that have to do with it? Plenty of people play video games who are older. Isn't the average gamer age like in the 30s?
+Triforce96 Yeah the average gamer age is 31 I believe. I'm 30 and I get burnt out on video games every once in awhile. I used to think it was "getting older" but that really isn't true. Any hobby you partake in a lot you are bound to get tired of eventually. Video games aren't really a childish or kid's hobby like a lot of people tend to think. I always come back eventually and I don't see myself giving up gaming anytime soon.
+Triforce96 However consider "growing up" might also entail having to take on more real life responsibilities and it takes time away from gaming. However, "growing up" isn't necessarily the best way to describe that. A high school kid with sports or clubs and such won't have a lot of time for gaming. However, a bachelor with a job without excessive hours or someone who is retired would have a lot more time to devote to it and that isn't dependent on being young.
+Paul Clinton I'm still surprised mobile games are successful I always found they were crap when I was a kid and still do, ds was and still is my go to for mobile gaming
Its kinda lame what gaming has become. The spirit of the hobby is gone...its all about ratings, competitive play, dlc, season passes, micro transactions, download-only games etc.
I started doing my videos after being inspired by your first room tour video, going a bit over 7 years now. :) I just did a video on being comfortable selling games, I guess it's a part of my "fatigue" as well, part of growing older and just doing something for so long. But like you, the love isn't going away, it just changes form and focuses a bit. Still, I do feel like I'm letting viewers down if I'm not that hardcore collector of every videogame related thing anymore. It's good you did this video as well, we need to do stuff for ourselves, not for some other people. :)
True so it for yourself, but when you Have a Patreon, you Have to do videos and talk about games because thats why Pete here is receving money by the people. Hes released very few vids.
Aplebutoms goria You can't force yourself to do anything, at least not for prolonged periods of time. Every person must make themselves happy before they can make others happy, that's just a fact of life. It's not selfishness: if a video creator does it, it is to ensure he can provide entertainment in the future as well, instead of burning out.
find work life balance in life. that's the key to living well. not exactly moderation but knowing the limits of pleasure and pain when you need to stop doing something. people even burnout from work and making so much money. at some point, you need a break. the human mind isn't made to continue to do the same thing again and again without any reasonable break.
This happens to pretty much every one as they enter full blown adulthood, it feels like it happens almost overnight. There's nothing wrong with transitioning into a casual gamer as an adult.
been around this channel since 2009, your video on demon's souls introduced me to the series which i'll be grateful for forever lol. glad to see you still around
Game Burnout happens to the best of us mate. There is no need to worry about it. What I appreciate the most about this video is that when I was first going through video game burnout, I thought I was completely losing interest in games. Google searching "video game burnout" didn't bring up anything really helpful. What I hope is that who ever searches video game burnout will come across this video and understand that it does in fact happen to majority of us. I've been going through game burnout on and off since around 2011. Sometimes I'm unable to put video games down, sometimes I only feel like watching them and other times I don't have any energy to even think about them. I do have quite a large backlog and many of my games are still sealed. When I buy games day one these days I always buy the games that I think will retain their value, and everything else I wait till it's cheap. So even though I may never get around to playing them, at least if I keep them sealed, they'll retain their value in case I need to sell them. Keep well Pete.
I know you commented this 3 years ago but im currenlty going through gaming burnout. It may be becasue ive started a full time job and as soon as i get online im pretty tires and not wanting to play.Just curious to see if you still game and if you got over it
Pete, it's a good thing that you're taking a break from gaming. I'm also experiencing the same sort of "burn out" as well. The best thing you can do in this situation is avoid gaming overall, for a long period of time. I'm not talking about a few weeks, I'm saying take like 6-8 months off. Then come back to it strong. Don't fool yourself into thinking "oh maybe I should try different genres of games to keep things fresh." A video game burn-out is one way of your brain telling you that you need to experience new hobbies in life. Adventure into a new hobby like comics, manga, movies, martial arts, or any sport, weight-lifting, etc. You don't have to be good at sports, but just have fun. Remember Pete, you don't owe us anything. Live your life for YOU, because life IS short.
I do agree with this, I had burnt out on FFXIV after three years of constant play. I changed games, genres the whole nine but still left gaming. Haven't played a single game or turned on a console in two months. Eventually you have to change the norm and do something else, the way I see it now is i may play video games again down the line but it'll never be the same
I know this is an older video but I think I'm going through this right at this very moment. I have close to 100 PS3 games and I've only beaten like maybe 15-20 of them. I also have The Witcher 3, Fallout 4 and other games like FarCry 4 on PS4. One of these days I'm hoping to bust down that wall and really put some grind into these games.
Play Games!, stop collecting. Play awesome games... By the time you finish other top games are $20 or less.... No point buying at $60, not worth it. Even Steam at Christmas time games are $5 or Less and top notch games, buy them and it's not a big loss if you never played them. I've been doing this lately and feel much better.
I was playing so many PS1/PS2/PS3 JRPGs, platformers and PC point-and-click adventure games before I went to college and then I just stopped. I honestly thought I was done with video games. Then one day, 5 years later, I went to the arcades with an old friend, and they had the big Outrun 2 arcade machine that comes with the mini-sized Ferraris. Spent all my quarters that day, and just before you know it, I became a devout Sega AM2 fan, which of course led me to a passion for the Saturn, the Dreamcast and collecting obscure imports. Your channel also played a big role in getting me back into games and especially the Saturn, but what I'm trying to say is that unless you weren't ever really into games, it always does its circle. Burnouts are totally ok and hopefully you get to live a happy life during that period. I'm also slowly getting back into JRPGs, but comparing to you, I was always into the longer JRPGs, I love side-quests, interacting with NPC, lots of free-roaming etc.
+altrogeruvah Outrun 2 is amazing and one of the best Arcade games! I just did a complete Out Run Series review on my channel as I love it and man I spent literally about $200 probably over the course of how much I played the original Out Run arcade machine.
Oh man... Even though I played Outrun 2 in my mid-20s for the first time, I think it definitely changed the way I see games. I previously thought games had to be all serious, long and complex but Outrun 2 managed to rewire my brain and just play games that are fun. Then came Sega Rally, the Virtua games etc. I am so glad for Yu Suzuki's contribution to the world of video games. Sounds to me like it would be cheaper for you to invest on an Outrun 2 arcade system in the long run! (awesome review too!)
yeah - That's what I love (and miss) about SEGA / Yu Suzuki's games captivated me and playing Out run 2 / Outrun 2006 is the embodiment of relaxing/ enjoyable/ classic gaming - the amount spent is an approximation, I just always frequented this fast food place in my youth and they had Out Run - but yeah - One day I'd love to have the sit down cabinets of all the Out Run games!
I can't believe how much I relate to your gaming fallout. Hearthstone has basically been the only game I've played in the past 1-1/2 years, and that's only a game each morning with breakfast. Starting to get back into enjoying and actually buying games.
Seriously, if you stay behind the new releases you save so much money. Shoot, if you stay behind console generations you can get tons of games for the price of just a few of whats current.
+Ponaru except if you're a completionist like me and have to get the new in box games before they're gone. I usually wait wait wait wait oh man its cheap! Then bam! Price hike >:(
+Wesley Whiteside Yeah, it can bite you in the ass waiting sometimes. :p That being said, I usually pick up Atlus games or others that I figure are going to have a limited print run as soon as I can because I know they are going to be a pain to get down the road.
+Ponaru yeah i try to do the same thing. Last generation, i kinda felt like an expert on predicting what will go down, but this generation has been very unpredictable because they keep on making less physical copies and stuff is moving towards digital. And if you have a high goal like myself you're bound to miss a few. Lately I've been overcompensating and just buy full MSRP price whenever I see it out of stock somewhere but that's bad too because sometimes they bring it back and price goes down again. It's almost like the stock market, only I have no intentions to resell. The only way to do it properly is have a nice job and a cash cushion. The industry is really getting to me personally and I've decided that I'll have to one day strike the lottery for a complete collection and rely on hackers to fix all the digital content I've missed out on because holy crap is there a lot.
+Wesley Whiteside Thats actually why I feel like last and current gen games are not going to have much of a collectors market. With all the patches and updates they require it will be impossible at some point to have the complete game. Systems that have patches and dlc downloaded will be more desirable than the games themselves. lol
I've been pretty burned out lately. My problem is that i have a ton of games i haven't even touched yet i keep buying... which is a great problem to have, certainly a first world problem. I find it challenging to maintain my channel at times since the passion can really fall off at certain points. I think what we do here kind of makes us feel forced so it's not as fun anymore man. Great video and i can really relate!
I honestly believe it's because there's so many games to play that it overwhelms us and we just ended up never touching or giving a damn about them cause we also need to keep a balance with life. it all became about buying now. Maybe the indoctrination of advertisements finally took effect in making us just buy games but lose the passion to play it
hikingbird42 Funny you mention that. i JUST uploaded a video talking about that. When i was a kid i didn't have that issue at all. I only had access to so many games so i never felt overwhelmed.
I've always been that way in that I don't buy games on release day. It's kinda foolish really especially for us collectors with a huge backlog. Why pay $60 day 1 when I won't be able to touch it in months because of my immense backlog? I wait a few months, hell not even that long, and it will be $20-30 on amazon or at Target. That's what I did with the new Tomb raider. I really wanted to play it but with the holidays I think I got it for $30 about a month after it was released and I still haven't beaten it yet.
+xxkomebackkidxx I know the feeling. It is also a great time to go back and pick up and play games you missed from last generation because they are so cheap now. For example I never got around to buying and playing Fallout New Vegas. I could of spent 60 bones for the game then well over 100 in total eventually if I picked up the DLCs as they came out. However, I got the ultimate edition with all the DLC brand new sealed for 15 bucks. Just as enjoyable now as it would of been then for a fraction of the price.
+xxkomebackkidxx I'm the same and doing that allowed me to get all the Wii and PS3 (+360 exclusives) games i ever wanted. Even this gen i'm only missing a few first party Wii U games (those are the worst when you are trying to be cheap) and some PS4 games that have yet to drop in price. The industry caters to people that wait for price drops anyway so i have no reason to change anytime soon. :)
+xxkomebackkidxx plus the newer games are buggy as heck ive learned in most cases to block out newer games till there in there 3rd or 4th patch phase and closer to the 40 range and found ive had a much better experience the companies have this crazy realease it broke and day one patch it and slowly fix it
+xxkomebackkidxx I'm totally with you on this one. It's like people are even pre-ordering games that they're not even THAT excited about and have to pay full retail price for just so they could have it on release day and play it while everyone else is playing it.. How's the new Tomb Raider btw? I'm waiting for the PS4 version..
i just finaly got an xbox one waited for the 1 tb hard drive and the bugs to be worked out it came with the new tomb raider good game but wait its selling so bad itll def drop in price fast there already selling it with all dlc preaty cheap
The grind gets old. I use to play rpg's but now I only want a game that last about 30 minutes and then im done. You sort of grow out of them. Then you just focus on collecting rather than playing. It happens to everyone.
I feel pretty much the same way! Except Dark Souls sticks with me well. Also, I still love multiplayer games, because its more than a game to me. It's a social interaction that doesn't ever seem to lose its charm for me. At least not yet.
+Brett Sadler does it ever. I just refuse to play any game now where i feel like i have to mash through dialogue just to run around the same area only to be granted more useless dialogue.
+Ramon I have just recently played Bloodborne & it is my new favorite game of all time. I would rather just play 2 or 3 really good games a year for example Witcher 3 , Dark Souls , Fallout etc ... I've never been the kinda person to just pick up any sort of game on release day & play it , It has to have a really good story & alot of substance for me to immerse myself into it.
Very interesting your tastes are changing. As you get older it definitely happens. I'm a 45 year old gamer and back in my thirties FPS and Fighting games were the first that I dropped as well. Awesome to hear you're playing Dark Cloud again on the PS4. I'm currently doing the same thing. Can't wait til I start Dark Cloud 2 again. It's probably in my top five games of all time. Then Rogue Galaxy will be next, as I've never completed it.
+Classic Contagious Gaming Yeah I'm 30 and fighting games I quit completely and I'm really losing interest in FPS. Always been primarily a JRPG gamer and I don't see that changing any time soon. You will have a great time finishing Rogue Galaxy. It is a great game.
+Andrew Phillips Awesome to hear about Rogue Galaxy. I've caught a little flack for re-buying the Level 5 games (Dark Cloud I / II and Rogue Galaxy but I want to show full support to Level 5 as I want to someday see Dark Cloud III.
+Andrew Phillips I've been sick to death of fps games for a long time now. The genre is arguably the vanguard of the majority of triple A titles you see flooding the market. This genre is the worst with getting sequel after sequel and another sequel. Rehashed game mechanics with a different coat of paint. I could say the same for many fighting games.
+Classic Contagious Gaming I got so addicted to Dark Cloud again, but can't say I will do the same for the sequel, that game never caught my attention for long.
+PeteDorr Ahh, for me I played the original and loved it then when the sequel came out it took over my life for a few months and before I knew what happened, I had about 103 hours played. I love the art style in the sequel.
Same happened to me bro. I had a major burnout and I am recently coming back. It happened when I started playing Call of Duty and at the same time, having a pretty shitty year suffering with anxiety. But I am slowly creeping back, my friends are all playing Pokemon X at the moment so I have started looking at different games. I really think game burnouts (for someone who loves gaming) is a very depressing thing to go through, as it feels like losing your THING. Good to see you back, I used to be subscribed to you on my old channel for years. :) welcome back bro.
I have gaming burnout right now. I played the entirety of Trails in the sky in the span of one month and put in over 70 hours in all of them. While playing I was so engrossed in the games that some days I played from morning till night, while others were from evening till night. I finished playing Trails in the Sky the 3rd on the 15th of December (which was a great game to end a great series), and the ending really made want to jump straight into one of the next games in the Trails series Trails of Cold Steel, now mind you I did play Trails of Cold Steel earlier on this year, before I even touched Trails in the Sky, and I was having a great time. Then Trails of Cold Steel I & II were announced to be released on PS4 in 2019, so I didn't end up finishing the game the first time around cause I wanted to get it on PS4. But when I finished playing all of Trails in the Sky, the ending was really satisfying for me, but at the same time I was thinking about whether I should just jump straight into Trails of Cold Steel on PC since I already have access to it cause there was a part of me that wanted to play it right away, and well, emotion got the better of me and I ended up starting Trails of Cold Steel on the same day I beat Trails in the Sky the 3rd. While I was playing through the game, nothing was really out of the ordinary and was enjoying myself, but after an hour or so, I started to feel a bit disatisfyed... and that's when the burnout began. I did end up finishing Trails of Cold Steel a week later on the 22nd. But that journey was a bit ardous, on one hand I remember enjoying the game the first time I played it, but on the other disatysfaction grew even more. Then I started Trails of Cold Steel II, and was just in the middle of the prologue where I just had to stop and take a break from it all. Even though I say that, I still think about the series. And all other games that I try to play in its place aren't enough to keep me satisfyed at all.
The same thing has happened to me recently. For the last year and a half or so. I have mostly stopped gaming, I kind of just got bored with the games that had been released and I rarely did play anything for that time. Although I recently got an Xbox One, and have really been enjoying Halo 5, and Gow, so I am slowly getting back into it. By the way, I remember when I first found your channel back in 2009, I was a loyal follower for several years until around 2012. It's good to know that you are still doing this. Keep up the good work.
I don't even maintain an active RUclips channel but I heavily relate to gamer burnout. Maybe it happens to all of us with age. In my teens and twenties I couldn't get enough gaming and I would get heavily invested in JRPG stories of all kinds and retro gaming. At 33, I find my saturation limit for lengthy games or certain gaming tropes to be severely lessened by comparison. I've tried to find the cause but I think it's a culmination of things: the internet, let's plays, the gaming industry boom, aging, being spoiled for choices, etc. Still on the upside, while I may not consume games at the rate I used to, titles will still come out that grip me. It may happen less often but when it does it's wonderful. Recently I played games like Rogue Legacy, The Witcher 3, Until Dawn, Raid mode on RE: Revelations 2, Shovel Knight, Persona 3, Persona 4, Shadow of Mordor, and GTAV obsessively until I beat them so I'm not done yet. Still taking a break or being more discerning with my gaming choices was jarring at first but ultimately I find is just a part of finding a personal moderation to ensure I enjoy my favorite hobby for years to come.
I've been only collecting for a little over 3 years now and I'm falling more in love with the hobby every day, and I keep being fascinated by the entire world and history of gaming but I get where you're coming from, although for different reasons, I do find myself burned out on gaming sometimes, where there are weeks when I'd play nothing nor have the desire for it, it's either because I'm depressed or just don't care for it all that much. It's weird, because as happy as I am that gaming has become more widespread and thus doesn't carry with it the same social stigma anymore, I still find myself completely overwhelmed by how many games/remakes/reboots are being made today, I honestly don't know how people are able to play all of these games and find the time to discuss and talk about them all year long, I still have a huge backlog so I can't hardly find the time to play every new game that's been released but it's almost like you have to to be considered a gamer as everybody does it, whether retro gamers or current-gen ones.. I on the other hand feel quite overwhelmed, and I don't know how someone could sustain the same level of excitement for ALL the remakes that are being made today, I honestly think it's kind of absurd.. I don't know, it's just too much for me right now, but I appreciate the fact that you're coming out and talking about this although it's not a very popular topic. Cheers.
Everything has been in constant change for the last few years, from what the typical modern game is like, to prices of retro games. It's understandable as a long-time gamer to become dis-enchanted. I think changing your priorities as you get older is a natural part of the cycle, and changing how much time your life revolves around games isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just stick with what feels right to you.
I hear ya Pete, we are the last of the bunch from 2008. They thought I was crazy with my camcorder pointing it at the TV and playing games. Of course I got with the times with direct capture and all, but I still carry the same spirit. Never cared about subs or viewers but playing games for fun. Love the channel Pete, been with ya since the beginning...
good to see you making vids again Pete! I always go through such crazy swings in my relationship with games.... what I have put it down to is just my own changes as a person and what I like and what I don't like..... far cry 3 was my favourite gaming experience ever... but looking back it just filled a gap in my life that I needed filling at that time.... when I tried to give myself to other games like watch dogs and far cry 4, I literally could not even get enthusiastic about them.... sometimes I think it isnt always the games it can just be you and your life and how you change in your opinions to them if that makes much sense.... I am only speaking for myself anyways :)
I am 100% with you pete. I have been watching you since you started and i have been collecting as well. I have hit this burnout myself too with all these new games and outrages prices. you got my support bud
I'm in my mid 40's and I took a break from console gaming for over three years; there was a few factors that made me do that. One being having a son(who loves video games as much as I do), money issues, and just truly wanted a break. I didn't quit gaming completely; I went to mobile gaming and really opened up a nice collection of titles since I had a couple of hips replaced. Then last summer I had the desire to get back into console gaming. Five systems later I'm back and enjoying a lot of the PS3/Xbox 360 titles at more than half the price off the release date prices. So is getting older a reason to change? Not entirely. More so a lifestyle change.
I'm feeling the exact same way. I can't get into fighting and first-person shooters, anymore. Even time consuming games in RPG's, for example, are just too much of a time sink for me (I don't think I can do everything in Xenoblade Chronicles X; I just want to finish the main story). I've been getting more and more into Indie games, which are no more than 5-7 hours and some are very original and you feel satisfied when completing them. Maybe I'm just getting older (turning 31 this year and I don't have tons of time like I used to when I was younger). I will always play games until I'm dead, but the gaming landscape is changing fast and I don't think I will adapt to it. I may just stick with playing the games I grew up with during the late 80's-mid 00's.
+Matthew J. Boone i don't think it is because you are getting older i am now 22 and my taste have changed and i stopped gaming for about a year when i turned 20 what i found out is that it's not me it's the games that came out didn't interest me (sorry if my english isn't good)
I often question if my passion for gaming will ever dissipate. However, I do agree with you on many of the frustrations of collecting and buying new modern games that fall in price so quickly. I'm at this point where buying games day one is a rare occurrence too. Glad you're back Pete. I hope you find the passion for video games again soon.
I can relate to everything you're saying. I get burnt out now and then and I notice from time to time that my tastes are constantly changing. it makes me sad when I am excited for a new game and then play it and immediately lose interest. it makes me sad when I pop in games I've loved all my life and I don't seem to appreciate them the same anymore. when you make one thing, in this case gaming, such a big part of your life, all of these bummers are inevitable. gravitate towards whatever makes you happy right now, in this moment. when that moment passes, reassess and continue to make yourself happy!
As sad as it may sound, it's called getting older. I am in the same position as you Pete. I'm in college, ready to graduate soon and making plans for my future and I barely game at all anymore. I'm lucky if I can play for a few hours a month these days. I think it's just our personalities. Some people like Johnny Millennium will always be like they were in high school and get so extremely hype for new releases and game for 40 hours a week and that's fine. Other people just grow apart from gaming. It's not "growing up" it's just changing into a different person. I keep telling myself once I have a steady career that I will get back into gaming like when I was younger.
happy console gamer does his channel as real JOB. it isn't a hobby. he makes actual money on it and produces video that is professional. he isn't doing this for fun only.
The key to beating burnout is balance. If you're experiencing burnout, in anything, then you're doing too much of it without having fun. I'm a music teacher/director and I got in to retro gaming and collecting because I needed something to keep my mind off of my job. So I've set limits to how much I game and also when I leave the job at the workplace. It really helps.
I've felt video game burnouts a lot recently, mostly due to random moments of depression. I always say the hardest part about playing any game is turning the console on, especially when you don't have the motivation to play it. Never force yourself to do something you don't want to, just let the feeling come back naturally.
how do you get burned out on video games? i rotate between current gen and retro games to avoid being burnt out on games. also it helps that i stick to one current gen console and not care about other modern consoles.
Man I have been watching your videos on multiple channels forever. Im 25 now and I have been watching since the start. I Suffer from video game burnout. Like you I collect many many games, which has now made me have a huge, seemingly unbeatable back log of video games that are great across all platforms and generations. If I have burn out I suffer through it, one thing I have noticed though that following this plan of making a list of your most excited games to play, to least excited to play games list, really helps. That way your backlog blob turns in to a actual to play list. either way check it out google life hacker video game back log really helped me with my major video game burn out recently. thanks for being here Pete. sorry for my grammar. Also very sorry for your grandfather, awesome that his games live on.
This was me from 2015 up until recently. My channel was dead for a while, because I just lost interest in games. My passion for gaming was still there, but nothing seemed to make it enjoyable like it use to be. I strangely got addicted to Destiny for a while and it sort of became a catharsis. Mindlessly shooting stuff, kinda brought my mind back to the enjoyment of just playing 1 game for a long period time while not worrying about every game that's coming out. There are so many games that come out monthly, even weekly now. That it sort of kills your vibe to play any of em, because you never have enough time to finish any of em. I'm slowly getting back to finding enjoyment in many games again, but it took a long time. Now I just take it easy and enjoy a few games instead of overwhelming myself. Just because you're a gamer doesn't mean you have an obligation to get every game that comes out that's good. You can take it slow and steady.
I am 28 now. I actually have been back into games for the past 3 years. I was very into gaming from about 10-17, and then literally just completely stopped. Sold everything (kicked myself later for that one) and didn't play anything other than multiplayer mariokart here and there while in college. It wasn't until I was 25, randomly went into a game store because my friend was going in, and something snapped back into place for me and gaming. My advice is to simply follow your gut. You don't have to game, it is probably healthy to take breaks, if you want to or feel burned out. My 2 cents. Being back into gaming has been a real joy for me now, I love it again. Didn't ever think I would get back into the hobby when I got out. Ya never know!
i don't really remember how long i've subscribed to your channel, i agree with you, whe get burned out with time (33 years old here. Another point, is that like you, know i can skip some games with no regrets. we like your channel, and update it as you feel confortable. Welcome back
These retro game prices are getting ridiculous. Games over 15 years old... over $25 or cost more than a new release game for PS4 or XBOX 1? Insane. Some games are not even rare, it's all over ebay and amazon. Who price these things?
ive been there too. lately, ive been burned out with comics. there just isnt any good stories anymore in comics that i just stopped. i decided to give up and move onto a hobby i missed the most, gaming. its funny, i remember you were one of the first people i watched when youtube first came out and ive always been a huge fan. i remember watching all your collection and games i bought recently vids and they really helped me figure out what games are good to get. keep doing vids as long as you can, petedorr, good to see ya again
I had my first real burnout during the summer between freshmen and Sophomore years of high school. Granted, it was the same time I fell into depression, so it may not be considered a true gaming burnout. I hardly did anything let alone play video games. It was a miserable time for me. It was not til the release of Dark Souls and Skyrim did I renew my passion for the hobby. I do truly credit those two games for breaking me out of my depression and making my life a hell of a lot better. I still experience fatigue at times, but that may be due to my limited interest in game genres. I, too, have lost a lot of passion for genres I once loved. I make four or five major purchases($50+) a year. Beyond that I wait for major price drops before buying a game. Just picked up Killzone: Shadowfall, Shadow or Mordor and Metro Redux for $50.
ah yes the getting old comments ha ha. oh dear. these getting "old" comments are from people who have given up on their hobbies or things theyve always loved and are just floating about living a miserable existence because "they are too old" to do anything like "play video games" or "collect figures" or whatever it is they are "too old" to do. dear o dear. In petes case, and i dont know him really at all (sure ive watched tonnes of his videos) but i dont know him personally, but from what hes said.. college and his grandad passing...hes simply just been smart and prioritised the things that are, at that given time, *more important* to him. simple as that. ive been gaming since 4 or 5 (probably earlier) and when i was in my final year at uni i stopped playing games as it was important i got the work done and graduated with a decent grade. graduated and sorted myself out and im still playing my games whenever i can now. ok its not as much as when i was 14 (as i have a job now) but i still try to game as much as i can. something that ive always done and will continute to do regardless of age. dont believe in this "too old" crap.
As someone who also went to Stony Brook Journalism school like you- I know that final semester of 490 is bruuuuutal. Running into you at the Union that one that was a wild experience. Hope you are doing well
on the topic of fighting games i started a f2p game called Brawlhalla and im hooked.. for a while i thought i was really good at fps games or rhythm games but i just sorta got burned out... most of my game collection consists of stuff like ddr or guitar hero but i realized that im not into games unless they are really challenging or really intense and fighting games seem to be where the challenge is ..i get burned out on games alot recently as well. like i tried to play golden sun and i was really into it for like a week then i just stopped playing it and havent really found the motivation to get back into it.. theres always something that will bring me back into it eventually... glad to see you back and i hope you find the motivation as well
+Moldy Flame You like JRPG and are not interested enough in any of the following games to get them at full price or early-ish? Star Ocean 5, Bravely Second, Fire Emblem Fates, Dragon Quest 7-8, Valkyria Chronicles HD and Odin Sphere Leifthraseir if you didn't play them (or even if you did, Odin Sphere and Dragon Quest VII look like pretty big improvements) or Dark Souls 3. I don't thing a year has had me this excited for games since 2011.
LelouchRika I'm interested in all of those. it's just that I have a tight budget so I'm limiting my day 1 purchases to P5 and FFXV. Alex Wayne Northern Hoarder I loved Episode Duscae, so I'm taking a risk with FFXV. DanielAyala Excited for that but I'll be getting it a couple of months after when it's cheaper.
Just reading the title, as a long time follower, I can understand the feeling of games burn out and having dabbled in video editing and some personal youtube uploading, I know how easy it can be to burn out. A few years ago I had a bit of a game burn out. Just take a break brother. Do what works best for you. I collect and play and do it all at my own pace that I sort of rebuilt for myself and I like it a lot better. Thats what games/collecting should be. Peek in to some other interests of yours etc. if you need something else to fill your free time. Don't force it. I think you've definitely shown you have a love of games and I would hope it doesn't fade but everyone needs a break from even their favorite hobbies. Take it easy man. Good luck~ PS: If you want someone to share thoughts with, feel free to shoot me a message. I'm a fellow collector and recent college finisher
+mark guest I found that the older i get the less i play. While I'm still interested in games i seem to spend more time watching twitch than actually playing games.
+mark guest Not really. Trying to collect every game and retro games would make any gamer go "Burnout". Even if you collect them all you probably won't have time to play them since you're also playing the new games.
We have all been there. I have taken breaks for severals years. What made me come back was Dark Souls 1 which made me once again commit to games. The problem is that I'm not finishing other games that I bought, that has made me quite picky and nowdays I only buy games that I really want to play. 2015 it was four games...... Bloodborne and Witcher 3 for the rpg side and Battlefront and Fifa for the competition side. There is not much time. I have other interests as training, movies, tv-series and listening to music. And watching youtube video is another side interest that I like.. Then you have to read a book or two in between....
Great you to see another vid mate. I am curious about what kind of games you actually prefer playing these days ? I kinda know gaming fatigue too and the desire to delve into other things and it actually makes for a nice balance. All the best for you !
I don't play games anymore and haven't enjoyed them since 2013. My friend thinks I'm just burned out, but I think after 4 years I'd be playing again, even after I upgraded my PC (1080 MSI SLI & 32GB of DDR4 Memory) I still had no spark to play the more graphically demanding games. I think it's safe to assume that my days gaming are over at this point:(
I know bro. I think the amount of games I beat over the past two years have been maybe one or two if I'm lucky. I still buy them occasionally, but I never get into them. Sometimes I'll play them for 5 minutes and never touch them again. I think it has to do with seeing so many different mechanics that it's hard to see something new. It doesn't excite you the same way. My brother can play a game like fortnite and be hooked for years and become an expert, I'm jealous because I wish I had the same commitment and devotion. But I'm like an add gamer, always looking for a fresh experience but once I experienced it I had my fill. I really want to beat a lot of modern games. But whenever I turn them on I instantly become bored even if I'm only in the menu.
I've been a subscriber of yours Pete for soooo many years! I still remember your 500 subscriber special believe it or not! Always enjoyed how candid you are about games you like and dislike, that hasn't changed. Your tastes may have changed, but you're still one of the best on RUclips!
I do not leave many comments here, but I am one of your channel's subscriber. I would watch your videos time to time. I am a mid 30 year old gamer, and like about my hobby. I would say collecting / gaming hybrid gamer is where I am at right now. All movie collectors do not watch every collection of movies over and over, same goes with musics or postcards, baseball cards, etc... Therefore, as long as I do not get much pressure of beating or finishing games, game playing and collecting is really fun. I think tasting and playing different art styles and system mechanics are the beauty of being a game collector just like a wine enthusiast. Game completion rate would go down more and more with our age and responsibilities, but the passion for collecting game should continue as a good hobby. Good to see you back!
+ChoppahFace He doesn't have his patreon link in the desc of this vid.Perhaps he has changed his mind about the donations and is too ashamed to acknowledge that.
No offense, but I think what you need is to get a girfriend, a couple of friends and start living a real life experience. I mean, videogames are great, but you need that "extra thing" in your life.
I totally agree with what you were saying about the retro game prices these days. When I went to the Retro World Expo a few months back, I couldn't believe the prices people wanted for some games. It's really a bummer to go to a convention like that and only come home with a few games because my budget wasn't over $1000. It's so hard to have fun collecting, when it's almost impossible to do so.
You are maturing out man thats all. Anything alive must grow just as anything alive must die. You are probably heading back to when you first like video games and why. In other words you have been around the block and back again.. Congratz!! Now for chapter 2 in your life of video gaming.
Ive been through the same thing as you a few years ago. I got burned out from games. I realized then it was because I was playing all these games that dident really matter to me or dident want to play. So i had reevaluate my gaming history and suddenly I came to the realisation that I had to change up the genres. I had drifted away from those games that i really loved to more "fancy" games, so i went back to my roots.
games are only expensive if you are a trendy retro collector. if this becomes a problem start collecting for overlooked systems and genre's.. psp , og xbox , psx among many others are very affordable to collect for
Hey Pete, been a subscriber of yours since around 2010, around that time. I can honestly relate to this very much, honestly for the last three years I've been burned out on gaming. Part of that, truthfully is due to depression, but another part of it is due to changing tastes and it's something that happens to everybody after a while in every facet of our lives. It's not something to be ashamed of. What helped me was to do a little soul searching and try to find what made me love gaming again, I kinda had to start from the beginning with the games I loved as a child and try to recapture that feeling. A lot of these newer games don't have that same magic anymore, and it's difficult to really enjoy something, especially when you have so much weighing you down. They used to be an escape, they used to be enjoyable, and you kinda have to try and really dig deep to find that joy again, it isn't easy at all. I wish you the best of luck, Pete, it's been awesome watching you grow as a RUclipsr and as a person and honestly if a new direction in your channel is the journalism-style cinematography we've been seeing the last year, I can easily say I'm excited for your future. Keep on keeping on.
Totally understandable. I think everybody goes through this at some point or another. Gaming should never be an obligation. Always play what you want, when you want, at your own pace. And always allow time for other interests, too.
It's good to see you back Pete. I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Nintendo games are the only ones that hold their value. I have been collecting a lot of GameCube, Wii and Wii U.
This is my favorite video you ever made so far Pete. I appreciate your honesty. I am a videographer/producer for a Universities Athletic's Department (Western Michigan University). I don't play video games much. I have an n64. That's about all I play, but I appreciate your channel a lot. Regardless of what the topic is, if you care about your work and show it, it will show in your product (in your case this channel). Everyone has to go through their hobby and know if it's worth doing anymore. It shows how hard it must be to stay in love with your hobby over time. I respect how you've evolved over time on this channel. Keep changing your best man.
I had the same thing, I was going through a rough time (really important exams, lost a very close relative and also suffering from anxiety) and I felt that I lost the only escape I had which was video games. But like everything I needed to have a break, and after almost a year I got back and started playing different styles of games and I find myself enjoying them more than ever. I sell games which I don't like and make a realistic backlog (ex: 5 games to beat before I buy I new release/game). It helped me alot, the concept of beating a game and putting it on your shelf and starting the next game has been refreshing and gives me this interesting sense of progression. Glad that you're back, been a fan for a few years now.
Not sure why this took me nearly an entire year watch, but here we are... Pete, I can completely relate to a lot of what you said here. There's been a couple points in time my life where I too felt "burned out" and just sold off every game and system, thinking that maybe it was time to move along to other things in life. But eventually I realize, video games are a part of who I am and to cut that off entirely is to be dishonest with myself. Not that you did that, of course, but my point here is that no matter how much we love something, taking a break from those things every now and then is ok. Even normal maybe. Just don't do anything rash like I did, if you can help it. Don't get rid of all your games. Or at least, hang onto the ones you have had since your much early days. I'm wishing I did now because as you pointed out, prices of retro games are ridiculous these days. To buy back those games in their complete and mint state now would cost me at least a few hundred dollars. Which is... very difficult to justify. And anyway there's also something special about having the very originals, the one and only copies from your younger days, and that's something that can't ever be replaced even if you did pay the current inflated prices. And lastly, I also just wanted to say thank you for the all the content you've provided over the years. Most people don't know just how much work it is to create videos, especially on a regular basis. It can be a full time job of it's own. Currently working on a project for a friend, so I understand first hand. Take care dude and stay awesome,
Pete whatever you choose to do you have my support! I have watched you since the start of the AGG podcast and I love your stuff! I have gone through video game burnout. Hardly played anything for 4 or 5 months. Then I bought a little game called Skyrim. That brought the love back!
As times passes people change and so do their interests. I guess you are in your mid 20s, something similar happened to me around that age. Now at 33 I mostly play casual games (for example, I'm really into Hearthstone right now), while I used to be really into long JRPGs. And there's nothing wrong with that, just a different take within the broad world of videogames. Also as others have mentioned, I tend to collect more videogame related things, rather than playing actual games. In any way, shape or form you feel comfortable and happy about making videos again and playing games, it will always be great to watch what you upload = ) ... Welcome back!!!!
Freedom Planet, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Fast Racing Neo, and Dragon Quest Builders(if you're into importing), are some recent games I'd recommend if you missed out on them. Glad to have you back man! :)
I'm 23 and dealt with a video game burnout for a few years until I got back into them last year. I'm mainly playing cs go, but it's a game that keeps me interested and proud if I do well. Being into games again has meant so much to me so I hope you get back to loving games, Pete
You are not alone, i have pretty much given up on console gaming, for most of the same reasons you have, an over saturation of "sameness" in modern gaming, full of high prices, endless downloads, micro transactions, fixes, patches etc, Blaaaaaaa! Retro gaming is almost worse with the crazy prices on nintendo, saturn, and turbo stuff, also Blaaaaaa! I've pretty much quit unless i can pick up stuff dirt cheap, or if it is something classic that i really want. I've turned completely to arcade gaming, on the real machines. They take up alot of space, but i find it fun to learn about them, fix/repair/restore them, and play them. The best part is they are challenging, and don't demand very much attention, you can play for 5-10 min and be completely satisfied. I'll take getting a high score anyday over completing a modern game. cheers, great to see you back!
This is the reason why the retro market is booming right now, a ton of us 30-40 yr. old gamers are burnt out on the "modern day" games being made. People are going back to the pick up and play style of retro games.
I had a burnout on games for the first time in my life too a few years ago. Also coincided with a life tragedy. The gaming crave came back though which I'm glad about, I do prefer having the hobby around to enjoy. If it doesn't come back for you though I'm sure you'll find a new passion.
Welcome back, I agree with you, I rarely buy games full price anymore unless I really want to play within weeks. Why I like flash sales like knack for 8 was a price I was willing to pay.
Great to see you back on here. It's funny how things go sometimes. For different reasons, I go through shorter periods where, no matter how much I love games, I just don't want to play them. There's nothing wrong with tastes changing, and moving to new things. More importantly thought, games take a back seat to family, and though I'm some stranger on the Internet, I want to offer my sincerest condolences for your loss. My experience loosing a grandparent make my enjoyment of my hobbies decline significantly. You need time to heal, and it's good your doing so. Take care, and glad to see you back.
Thanks for having the guts to talk about this. There are few who understand the suffering those of us who don't enjoy games as much we used to have to go through. It's a daily struggle.
That's completely natural. As you grow up and mature your priorities change, your taste change, your expectations change and that's happens to all of us. Happened to me too. In fact it would be weird if you didn't change.
We all go through it,I myself have gone through 2-4 years without gaming and when you do come back its more to enjoy, and my backlog is so huge I'll finally play Valkyrie Profile 2 in about 3 years from now.I've just started playing TR Legend (PS2) That I bought 2 years ago.
"I burned out on videogames" [...] "I was playing a MOBA"
I am 92% sure I found the root of the problem.
Ghost81
i agree , league pretty much killed gaming for me
@@deaththekid922 It sucks.
What is with all these growing up comments? There is nothing wrong with having a hobby and supporting it.
+Edmundo studios I know, right? It's as if people want to see him grow out of video games. Feels very negative, almost indoctrinating.
+Triforce96 I am 45 and I play games . I am currently playing Fallout 4.
+Triforce96 Maybe because his parents paid for just about everything he has...so yeah it needs to grow up
Its kinda lame what gaming has become. The spirit of the hobby is gone...its all about ratings, competitive play, dlc, season passes, micro transactions, download-only games etc.
Agreed 👍
+Jeff Daniels you said it comrade.
That's why I really like Nintendo and indie developers. I recently got a more capable PC and it's really shown me how it's changed as an industry.
+Jeff Daniels Much of gaming is, but look at it with a wider perspective and another reality shows.
+Jeff Daniels Yeah, modern gaming has definitely turned into money-grubbing mind gamey bullshit.
I started doing my videos after being inspired by your first room tour video, going a bit over 7 years now. :)
I just did a video on being comfortable selling games, I guess it's a part of my "fatigue" as well, part of growing older and just doing something for so long. But like you, the love isn't going away, it just changes form and focuses a bit.
Still, I do feel like I'm letting viewers down if I'm not that hardcore collector of every videogame related thing anymore. It's good you did this video as well, we need to do stuff for ourselves, not for some other people. :)
OK first thing. Huge fan of your videos. Second. I completely agree.
True so it for yourself, but when you Have a Patreon, you Have to do videos and talk about games because thats why Pete here is receving money by the people. Hes released very few vids.
I wasnt talking to you sorry should have been specific to whom I was replying to. I was replying to Finn
+finngamer your asmr is pure gold, you should feel bad for not having more of that :D jk, love all your content.
You are a good guy man, never quit! We love you big guy!!
Sometimes the things you own end up owning you...
find work life balance in life. that's the key to living well. not exactly moderation but knowing the limits of pleasure and pain when you need to stop doing something. people even burnout from work and making so much money. at some point, you need a break. the human mind isn't made to continue to do the same thing again and again without any reasonable break.
I hear ya man, I hear ya. Wish I could help.
Strong point on the $59.99 game being $34.99 2-3 months later.
That being said, I usually pick up Atlus games or others that I figure are going to have a limited print run as soon as I can because I know they are going to be a pain to get down the road.
+EQOAnostalgia You can send some of your games my way. I will help you with your addiction.
yoyo I wish i could share them with people.
+Brett Sadler Sad and true :[
I feel pretty much the same way! Except Dark Souls sticks with me well. Also, I still love multiplayer games, because its more than a game to me. It's a social interaction that doesn't ever seem to lose its charm for me. At least not yet.
+SolidBren Same here, only game I really enjoy playing nowadays is Bloodborne and hearthstone, sometimes LoL.
+PeteDorr
Ahh, for me I played the original and loved it then when the sequel came out it took over my life for a few months and before I knew what happened, I had about 103 hours played. I love the art style in the sequel.
You are the reason I'm so into collecting. Great to see you return!
Glad your slowly getting back into the hobby man. :)
Hes right about gaming... i miss the old days
I had a giant burnout on videogames due to depression, lasted a few years but I'm finally getting back into them again
MediaFreak97 I think that's what's happening to me
Five plus years I haven't been playing video games since... GTA 5 on XBOX 360 was the last game I'd played.

I had a burnout on games a couple years ago
I'm sure it happens to everyone
Im sort of recovering now, but Im still not really getting the URGE to play and its fucking pissing me off coz deep down there I want to ... fuck :(
I've felt video game burnouts a lot recently, mostly due to random moments of depression.
Its called growing up and getting a life. You'll learn one day.
You're right, kappa. You know me so well now from my one comment. Have a nice life.
+Venom Snake Called it. Carry on, and don't worry, if they don't accept you then they are not worth worrying about. Good luck!
+Ponaru you can still have a life and enjoy hobbies if you are smart
+Edmundo studios Yup, I wonder why some people can't comprehend time management.
Wow, it's like we're going through the same thing. I just don't have the patience anymore.
You can take it slow and steady.
games - "burnout, 2001"
Do whatever you wanna do, Pete. Don't feel bad you don't owe us anything it's just RUclips
i don't really remember how long i've subscribed to your channel, i agree with you, whe get burned out with time (33 years old here.
Thank god for indies
I hope you enjoy Kill zone Shadow Fall....I was severely disappointed after the greatness of of 2 and 3
kaedeshirtoto KZ3 is a very competent shooter. Easily one of the most mechanically sound shooters of last generation. But the story was god awful!
ah yes the getting old comments ha ha. oh dear. these getting "old" comments are from people who have given up on their hobbies or things theyve always loved and are just floating about living a miserable existence because "they are too old" to do anything like "play video games" or "collect figures" or whatever it is they are "too old" to do. dear o dear.
Hope you are doing well
Good to see you back man
on the topic of fighting games i started a f2p game called Brawlhalla and im hooked.. for a while i thought i was really good at fps games or rhythm games but i just sorta got burned out... most of my game collection consists of stuff like ddr or guitar hero but i realized that im not into games unless they are really challenging or really intense and fighting games seem to be where the challenge is ..i get burned out on games alot recently as well. like i tried to play golden sun and i was really into it for like a week then i just stopped playing it and havent really found the motivation to get back into it.. theres always something that will bring me back into it eventually... glad to see you back and i hope you find the motivation as well
There are only two games this year that I'm buying at full price that will be worth it.
Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV
totally agree
uncharted 4?
+Moldy Flame You like JRPG and are not interested enough in any of the following games to get them at full price or early-ish? Star Ocean 5, Bravely Second, Fire Emblem Fates, Dragon Quest 7-8, Valkyria Chronicles HD and Odin Sphere Leifthraseir if you didn't play them (or even if you did, Odin Sphere and Dragon Quest VII look like pretty big improvements) or Dark Souls 3.
I don't thing a year has had me this excited for games since 2011.
+Moldy Flame Dont waste your cash on FF15, its gonna be garbage
LelouchRika I'm interested in all of those. it's just that I have a tight budget so I'm limiting my day 1 purchases to P5 and FFXV.
Alex Wayne Northern Hoarder
I loved Episode Duscae, so I'm taking a risk with FFXV.
DanielAyala
Excited for that but I'll be getting it a couple of months after when it's cheaper.
Sorry for your loss. All the best
Love this man!
I went through the same thing recently. I went through a stressful time and left gaming for a few months. I'm slowly getting back in now.
"i got burnt out on games" *has a million marios in the background*
Good luck~
PS: If you want someone to share thoughts with, feel free to shoot me a message. I'm a fellow collector and recent college finisher
it's called getting older .
+mark guest yup i was thinking the same thing.
+mark guest ouch!
+mark guest It's called broke on the verge of being homeless.
+miniwar monger I'm actually playing my iPad a ton lately, starting to delve into a new file of Final Fantasy IX for the first time in over a decade.
The game that I payed full price for and loved and thought it was worth it was Breath of the Wild
I've been a subscriber of yours Pete for soooo many years! I still remember your 500 subscriber special believe it or not! Always enjoyed how candid you are about games you like and dislike, that hasn't changed. Your tastes may have changed, but you're still one of the best on RUclips!
Such a first world problem lol.
Good to see you back!
its pretty ridiculous, this guy begs for fucking money on patreon and then says "hes burned out." Lost so much respect for this guy.
+ChoppahFace He doesn't have his patreon link in the desc of this vid.Perhaps he has changed his mind about the donations and is too ashamed to acknowledge that.

Great video. Never thought I'd hear pete say this kinda stuff. Relevant/Relateable. Honestly my favorite ep of yours.
Sup Pete, welcome back.

I had drifted away from those games that i really loved to more "fancy" games, so i went back to my roots.
games are only expensive if you are a trendy retro collector. if this becomes a problem start collecting for overlooked systems and genre's.. psp , og xbox , psx among many others are very affordable to collect for
Watching in 2022 best RUclipsr ever. Nice comeback Pete
Pete, good to see you back! I agree about RPGs. I used to love them as a child, but now don't have the patience for complexity or tough difficulty.
