Played many games all my life. Never knew what a rogue or rogue-like game was. Going into Returnal blind as it came with my monthly plus didn’t know what to expect. Immediately I was engaged and sucked into its world. With the many deaths that brought every emotion you can think of to shutting off my PS in complete and utter disparity filled with grief, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. And I Returnaled. Excellent game! One of the best I ever played. And after beating a boss on every level the feeling of satisfaction and celebration made it even more worth every risk and death! Returnal
Returnal was also my first foray into the rogue-like genre. Still not my favorite type of gameplay but if the story, character, and atmosphere is excellent, it's worth all the emotions!
@@dottyduke If you enjoyed Returnal's gameplay loop with the sci-fi atmosphere and interesting story, I highly recommend you check out "Prey: Mooncrash" if you haven't already. Prey is a great game but man, Mooncrash was just it for me. I went through the same emotions, shutting down my PC in a rage many times, but it was so satisfying to beat it in the end.
Love this game got the Platinum then deleted my save file just so I could discover everything all over again, Nice to see people recommending it 2 years later 👍
Shooters are not my thing, but I absolutely loved this game. One of the best games I've ever played, and I've been gaming since the Atari! Just completed the main story today, took me 38 hours, and I have given up and left it for months at a time, because i just wasnt good enough. Feels very old school in the way that the game tests players skill, plus you have the added difficulty of having to start back at the ship nearly back at square 1 with every death. Fantastic game, not sure if I will get the platinum as there is still so many games to catch up on, but highly recommend it.
7:00 After dying millions of times, I actually beat the final boss on my first try, I love this game because I actually could sew my progress and skills get better, and it felt so satisfying
I just ordered a ps5 a few minutes ago, I’m totally gonna be playing this game and demon souls right off the bat this weekend. I’ve especially been excited for returnal it looks so damn fun. Great video btw 👌
Bro i’m a “casual gamer” but i wanted to challenge myself so i played demon souls and it was great. I played returnal after that and it is now my favorite game of all time. I’m close to platinum now but will probably restart once i do. I hope u enjoy it as much as i do
Hoping this and another video or two will help motivate me to try it again. I played for like 10ish hours when I first got my PS5 a couple years ago and even though I'm a fan of roguelikes/lites and had heard so much good about it, I wondered if I was playing the wrong game. It was kinda cool but it really didn't seem that special and I remember being more bored and annoyed eventually by lack of progress which is rare for me and then I quit cause I got tired of feeling like I was just wasting time.
Succinct meaningful comments; Good choice of talking points; Excellent footage that compliments the narrator; Original music, credited for easy Spotify-ing... I'm sold - got my sub :)
I played this sometime back, but couldn’t get that far in it due to its difficulty. Discovering that the story becomes engaging and Selene is such a compelling character, does make me want to go back to it and push on.
Bro, it’s so good once you really get accustomed to all its systems at play. every enemy type has specific attack patterns which once you learn are actually quite easy to outmaneuver. I used to struggle a lot with the severed in fractured wastes. But after doing everything in the game there is, the teleporting tree dudes are easily the toughest enemy.
Most of the soundtrack for this game is variations of DON'T FEAR THE REAPER by Blue Oyster Cult. The song itself is featured in a cut-scene. This means that RETURNAL has more Cowbell than any other video game in history. You now have knowledge. use it for good.
@@OTG1776 The song is played in one of the cutscenes inside the house. As for the rest - just listen to the background music. It's basically variations of DFTR. It comes out best during the Hyperion boss fight.
I dont know if I should get this game or not. I loveeeee the artstyle and everything about the game but the difficulty is what's stopping me. I've played a little bit of the game because I had Playstation plus Extra so I got to play it for free but I didn't play much. It's on discount and I'm really wanting to play it again but I don't know
Been playing the game for a while, already beaten Phrike the first boss, and now grinding on the second biome. Great game except for the rogue-lite mechanic. Just a fancy term to label a game that doesn't respect your time and strips you of progress to prolong it's duration. Let's be honest. The six biomes would be finished in 2 hours AT MOST if the game had regular checkpoints. The game gets boring when you have to start all over again and play the same basic enemies, and worst of all : repeat the looting, store it only to LOOSE it again later - because it's certain that you WILL die. Anyway, they ruined what could be one of the best games of all time
@@whitneyblock8447 typical reaction, you could be more original. I do get good with games that respect my time (check my DOOM Eternal master level gameplays on Nightmare difficulty). Repeating the same looting to "make a build" is boring AF. I deleted Phrike with a shitty zero ranked pistol and no extended HP (again see the video in my Returnal playlist), so I guess I am better than you think - just not into "runs". Is "run" a thing now? Like don't give them checkpoints because the game without checkpoints would be over in 2 hours at most , and how are we going to justify the $70 price tag?😄
@@spirothegamer I agree with you totally. How would anyone feel if one had to take the car everyday to the mechanic. ? Amazing game but it's a major fault not to let the player restart at every biom he isvin upon dying.
@@lordofthering990 As a boomer, I lived the whole arcade cabinet explosion back in the eighties. Most arcade cabinet games didn't have checkpoints obviously for PURELY technical reasons, you could not save every user's progress on a public machine, additionally there was no available memory to do that. In later games , you COULD continue from where you died, a time counter appeared on the screen and prompted for a coin to continue. Like I said, this new genre is just an excuse for lack of content. There's nothing challenging or interesting repeating the first biome again and again, to the point you can do it with your eyes closed, just to loot your way back to a new and better build IF you are lucky.

Great game. But In my opinion the way the story was told is absolute garbage. What do I mean? After having watch every "explained" video and read on multiple forums I have concluded: Nobody truly knows what the story of the game is, because for every conclusion, there is something to disprove it. The only way (that I can think of) to make it all make sense is if there are metaphors upon metaphors about metaphors.. And at that point, that's just bad story writing. So for anyone new to the game: Play the game, listen to audio files and what not, and just imagin your own conclusion. Don't waste your time watching a YT video explaining it, because I can garrentee you that the video is just as valid as your own conclusion.
