You're very welcome Jasmine. I know how frustrating it can be when things don't work correctly and you need to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to fix them.
Excellent video, many thanks (others have mentioned the music...not a big fan!). One thing I noticed is your screen shots of Moodle are somewhat different than mine, and it did cause some navigation fun to try to keep up with you. The other nuance is how the Word doc has to be formatted to get it to save properly...for me, a hard return between everything! It did work beautifully, though! I am very appreciative!
Very useful tutorial. I would like to randomly select only x number of questions from the test bank. i.e. each student will get a different set of questions (from a pool of questions in the test bank) when s/he takes the quiz at home. Can you kindly show us how to do that? I do agree that the background music is distracting. :) Thank you in advance for your future Moodle tutorial!
@gautam murthy. So the short answer on the math question is no. There is not an easy way of doing what you need done. One way to address this issue is to upload all of your questions that do not contain symbols, images, or graphs and then simply add them in manually into Moodle.

Easy to understand presentation, but I didn't see the answer options for filling in the blanks with that appropriate answers, A - D, on the Quiz uploaded to Moodle. Was that because we only saw the teacher version of the quiz, not what the students would view opening it up?
Thank you for the feedback Colleen. I'm not sure I quite understant the question. Did you watch your students to actually type in a correct answer into a blank or simply select the correct answer to a fill-in the blank from a multiple choice list. If the former, you may want to consider using the "Short Answer" type of question in Moodle.
"Kristi Bowker: The same thing happened to me. It says I have 10 questions but only 7 of the questions had text." Kristi, it's probably a formatting issue in your text file. If you can you upload the text file with the questions to your Google Drive and share a link I'd be happy to look at it. Or you can submit a reply below with your text questions and I'll generate a text file and test it out on Moodle.
José thanks, but I didn't see the point in referencing that since NotePad doubles as a text editor, which will automatically strip away any back end coding. As long as you follow my tutorial as is for Moodle 2.9 you should be fine.
@@Facultyworkshop Actually it is best to save it as a UTF-8 format. I didn't do that the first time and some of the questions and answers didn't upload correctly, I think it's because I had a single quotation " ' " in the question and answer options. After I saved it as the UTF-8 format...it worked with no glitches
It's doable, but not quick. You'll need d different file format and a lot of unique codes. The easiest and most efficient was that I found was to upload all the questions (text only) and then upload the images and diagrams and insert them from Moodle or a cloud drive.

I've had that situation before as well and in most cases it turned out that my upload file did not have the proper formatting. I had to go back and check every single question line by line to make sure that it was correctly formatted. Another thing that you can check for is to ensure that your txt file format is UTF-8.
Thank you for a great, easy to follow tutorial. I have already played around with it and it works great! My question is: Is there a way using this same format and not having to code in GIFT format to make a question that has a picture included. For example, I want to insert a picture of an ECG strip with a multiple choice question of "Identify this rhythm"? Thanks in advance!!
The short answer is no. You can't add images with GIFT or Aiken formats. There are some advanced Moodle user (developer-level) who claim to have been able to import images using XML format, which frankly speaking isn't easy. There is some documentation to explain how to do it, but the process requires the use of an XML converter software. Unfortunately, it is in Russian. I haven't found a current version in English. Regarding your other questions, if you don't want to use GIFT, you can use Aiken, which is simplier. However, Aiken is appropriate for simple multiple choice and true/false type questions. GIFT requires a bit more coding, but it allows you greater flexibility in importing other questions formats (e.g., Multiple choice, Multiple choice with multiple right answers, True-false, Short answer, Matching, Missing word, Numerical questions, Essay, and Description).
Thanks a lot for the effective video; direct to the point and very clear. I am wondering if you have an tutorial video on competencies and how the can be effectively used in a typical university course
+Hani Mawlawi thank you for the feedback. Can you provide me with some additional details and perhaps a sample of a competency in one of your current courses? I want to make sure I'm answering your question accurately. And are you looking for a way to incorporate and assess a competency in Moodle?
Thanks Dr. Al Malood for your response. I was considering using the competencies/competency framework in Moodle for my course and I was looking for a related tutorial that includes a sample use case.

Thank you for the feedback Moses. To answer your questions, it probably possible, but are you referring to multiple choice , short answers, or numerical problems? I need to understand the exact question or problem format you are referring to. Could you provide a full example of a math problem or questions that you would want to import into Moodle? Just copy and paste two or three of your math questions below in the reply.
I'm not exactly sure I understand the question, but there are several settings on the Moodle quiz itself that will allow you to provide feedback for incorrect questions.
Thank you Reeta, these are challenging times that call on all educators to switch to teaching online in an instance. It is not an easy feat, but hopefully you can find some help on my channel and those of others on RUclips. You can do this!
Q: I got lost where you highlited the ANSWER then you clicked on something which put the answers under all of the questions. How did you do that? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I really like your tutorial. Are you familiar with FAC?
Thanks Cheryl. I'd be happy to help. The answers were highlighted from the beginning, so can you let me know at what point (in minutes and seconds) in the video you are referring to? And, I'm not sure I am familiar with FAC, what does it stand for?
The video is really helpful. Thank you so much. I am gonna try this. May I ask a question related to the possibilities of a single try when answering a quiz question. I see that I can set one attempt for the quiz but I can't find a way in moodle that I can set "one single try" when answering, for example a multiple question. Which means that the student will not have the option to change his or her answer once it is submitted. Is there such a feature in moodle? Thank you in advance.
Thank you for the questions. As far as I am able to tell, there does not seem to be a setting for what you are asking. One thing I have done to minimize students ability to cheat is to give them shorter time limits, only present 1 question at a time, and shuffle the questions and answers for students.
Thank you so much. I have a problem in importing a topic to 6 classes. When i import the activities go under the wrong topic. How can I make sure the activity goes under the topic that i want?
After I created a quiz, I wanted to add more problems, but the "Add from test bank" option was not there? Do I have to re-import all the questions again?
If you want to add multiple questions at the same time, then yes you will need to import them. But if you're only adding one or two questions manually, you can do that by going to the quiz that you want to add the questions to you, scroll down to the bottom and then click on add.
Typically when you upload he's a file into Moodle that has specific content that was designed for the system it does the unzipping for you when you use the import feature. Provided it is the correct structure.
This was great! THANK YOU! I do have a question. When I uploaded it to the moodle the "Question Name" was there with the question, but there is no question text. Also not all of my answers imported. I checked the document and they are there. Do you have any suggestions of what can be done to fix that issue?
+My Own Business Institute (MOBI) It's sounds like the formatting issue in Notepad if you followed the example. If you can you upload the text file with the questions to your Google Drive and share a link I'd be happy to look at it.
How do we make sure that the questions are in the same order as they appear on the document - moodle seems to put them in alphabetic order. Thanks in advance!
Good question! I actually have not encountered that problem. That is very odd. I don't think that is an issue with the actual text documented that you upload, I suspect it may have to do with one of the settings while you're uploading the file.
+Jasper Chin that's an easy one :) use the GIFT format and your questions should be listed in this way on your text file. The example below has 3 sample questions. Describe how attendance will be taken? {} How are you expected to communicate with your professor? {} What are the consequences of engaging in disruptive behavior and/or the use of profanity in class? {}
!Thank you for this tutorial, it is very helpful In a case that the students do a multiple choice questionnaire on real paper, is there a posibility to upload their answers (their choices)?
Thank you for the feedback +Ariel Oberstein. Regarding your question, let me see if I understand what you're currently doing and what you would like to be able to do. Based on your comment, I'm getting the sense that you are currently administering a traditional quiz (hard copy) on paper. After your students complete the quiz on paper using pencil or pen, you want to be able to upload their individual responses to Moodle in their own gradebook. I'm getting this right so far? The short answer is not that I am aware of. You can upload student grades and your feedback to them, but I don't know of a way to upload their responses or choices. You can download student quiz responses or choices, but not the other way around.
It is exactly as you described. I know how to pass the answers from hard copy to Excel or Word doc, but I do not know how to upload the students answer into a quiz, so they can review it through Moodle. In case it is impossible, is there any option to send their choices from Excel/Word as an individual message. I mean that each student gets only his own answers?
+Ariel Oberstein there isn't a user end (teacher) level access or even an admin level access that would allow you to do that on the front end interface of Moodle. In theory responses can be manipulated on the back end through the database, but that is not something that is recommended.
The information in this video is up to date and extremely helpful; Thank you. How might you also include General Feedback for Moodle in Microsoft Word? Your response would be much appreciated.
+Chriskindle1 I'd be happy to help, but I'm not sure I understand the question. What exactly are your attempting to do? Do mean leaving feedback for students on an activity such as an assignment, quiz, or discussion?
+FacultyWorkshop Thank you for responding. I figured out how to use the Gift file format to show the general feedback that provides an explanation with answers for each question after the quiz is over. In the gift file format all I have to do is add #### ,and type the explanation for the answer to a question like so: Type Question? { ~wrong answer option A =correct answer option B ~wrong answer option C ~wrong answer option D ####EXPLANTION } I have a different problem now. I was trying to upload 100 Quiz questions, and I got this message "If you're using a MySQL database for your Moodle installation, this error can be caused by the server's max_allowed_packet size being configured incorrectly. Increasing this value may resolve the issue." Any idea what the problem might be? I think I'll have to increase the value of max_allowed_packet but I don't exactly know how to do that. I have this setup on wampserver by the way.
+Chriskindle1 I'm using a XAMPP local installation for tutorial purposes, but it is very similar to WAMP. Try this: 1. Locate the my.ini file it should be in your WAMP folder under mysql>bin>. It should look something like this: C:\WAMP\mysql\bin\my.ini 2. Save a (backup) copy of the my.ini on your desktop, just in case you need to revert to the original version. 3. Open the my.ini file in Notepad, Notepad++, or jEdit 4. Under [mysqld] locate "max_allowed_packet = 1M" and increase it to a higher number 5M or 10M 5. Save the edited my.ini file and re-start your WAMP server If this doesn't work you can always delete the edited file and replace it with the original that you saved on your desktop. Try it and let me know how it goes. Good luck!
+FacultyWorkshop Thanks a bunch. I edited my.ini which was located in: c:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysqlx.y.z\my.ini. It didn't work, but you steered me in the right direction, and I was able to increase it through my php.ini All I had to do was find the php.ini in the right section of my desktop where my Wamp icon is located on Windows 7. I then did a search for these in my php.ini: post_max_size - changed From 8M to 1024000M Upload_max_filesize - changed from 2M to 1024000M It turns out that my questions weren't uploading because of the size; I found out after turning on the debug for my Moodle that it was another problem which looked something like this: *Stack trace: * • line 446 of \lib\dml\moodle_database.php: dml_write_exception thrown • line 1164 of \lib\dml\mysqli_native_moodle_database.php: call to moodle_database->query_end() • line 1210 of \lib\dml\mysqli_native_moodle_database.php: call to mysqli_native_moodle_database->insert_record_raw() • line 398 of \question\format.php: call to mysqli_native_moodle_database->insert_record() • line 119 of \question\import.php: call to qformat_default->importprocess() This looked like gibberish nonsense to me, so I decided to enter the General Feedback after uploading the Questions separately in Aiken format like you showed in this video. I didn't want to have to do it online page by page, but it seems I have no choice now. The Tips in this video helped a lot with the Aiken format though so thank you.
+Chriskindle1 I'm so glad that you figure out how to edit the correct .ini file. Open Source apps are great, but every now and then you'll need to role up your sleeves and begin to tinker with the code. Fortunately, the open source community is supportive and there's lots of information out there. All the best Chris and if there's anything that I can help with on the front end of Moodle let me know. Tinker a bit, but I'm definitely not a coder.
+Amen Rahh A while ago there was a beta software and some talk about a program that allowed you to import from excel to Moodle, but it required some coding. I haven't actuallly seen the software and the links to download this software seem to be broken. A few Moodle developers agree that at this time it is not possible to import from excel to Moodle. If you have a lot of questions in excel, you could export them to notepad as a text file. The data will be in the text file, but then you'll need to manually format each question. That said, if you want to create a glossary in Moodle you can use an excel file.
Hello Sir, Thank you very much for the contents of the video. i have one doubt, how to import a word file into moodle if it contains equations and images. Thanks for the great information.
THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR , I HV ONE QUERY I HV 1000 QUESTIONS AND WANT THT WHEN MY STUDENTS SIT FOR EXAM SO FROM THT EVERY STUDENT SHLD GET DIFFERANT QYESTIONS TS FOR ATTEMT, IS IT POSSIBLE?
Thank you for watching the video and for your question. The answer is YES! You can create a quiz or an exam for your students and ensure that the get a different version of the exam. Lets assume this is for a midterm or final exam. I would suggest that you create a Quiz Category called "Midterm Exam" or "Final Exam" and import your 1000 questions into it. After that, create a "Quiz". After you create your quiz you will need to add questions to your quiz. In my videos I selected the "Add questions from bank", instead of that option, select the "Add random question" and use the questions listed in your category.

Like many Moodle users, I'm mostly self-taught through reading, informal training, and experimentation. If you're interested in a course, you may want to do look into the following. I have not taking this course myself, but if you are looking into getting certified, this may be an option: You may want to try www.moodlebites.com/mod/page/view.php?id=3210 Also, as an administrator, it would be helpful for you to have your own server with a Moodle installation for practice and testing purposes. You can do this on a regular computer or laptop, it doesn't have to be an actual server. You just need the server software like WAMP or XAMPP.
I think all Moodle has right now is the Moodle Certified Course Creator. See link below. moodle.org/course/view.php?id=48§ion=3 You have to take the course, and a test, from a certified Moodle Partner. ELearning Experts gives the training, from time to time. elearningexperts.net/ I think Moodle may be in the process of changing their certification process.
Thank you! Yes, you can replicate the process on a Mac in pages. Follow these steps: 1. Formatting your questions in pages as shown in the video. 2. Click "File" 3. Click "Export to" 4. Click "Plain Text..." I would suggest testing this out with one or two questions and uploading the test file to Moodle before you spend time doing an entire quiz. Good luck!
This is one of the best MOODLE walk throughs on RUclips. God bless you.

Thank you. How to import mathtype in word document? TKS a lot.
Importing math expressions into Moodle using this method will not work.
Interesting! Can you use this format for Reading & Listening activities, too?
Great information...Thank you very much sir, very helpful...
Thank you Ravi! Much appreciated!
Please how do I upload my quiz which is in mathematics and having mathematical signs/symbols? Since the present video tutorial isn't working.
Thanks, very well explained. I will try to implement this
Q: I got lost where you highlited the ANSWER then you clicked on something which put the answers under all of the questions.
How to prevent one from copy paste in Moodle assuming we have a descriptive answer? Please help.
This requires implementation of some extra restrictions on your quizzes. I'll try to do a video tutorial to walk you through the process.
Helpful topic for me as i was struggling hard to do the same. Thank you sir
You are welcome
Thanks for this video. Very helpful
how to import math questions with different symbols and images
Thank you so much. I have a problem in importing a topic to 6 classes. When i import the activities go under the wrong topic. How can I make sure the activity goes under the topic that i want?
How to provide multiple answers as correct?
Sir Great Video
Thanks a lot
After I created a quiz, I wanted to add more problems, but the "Add from test bank" option was not there? Do I have to re-import all the questions again?
If you want to add multiple questions at the same time, then yes you will need to import them. But if you're only adding one or two questions manually, you can do that by going to the quiz that you want to add the questions to you, scroll down to the bottom and then click on add.
The explanation is great! Thank you! However, the music background is incredibly distracting from your explanation!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi I would like if you make an explanatory tutorial on how to use letters to be used in Moodle's gradebook.
Thank you. That is a great suggestion! I'll be sure to add that to my list and create a video on.
Excellent tutorial.
Thank you Maggi!
how about for "matching type" questions? Thanks for this video. Very helpful.
Great suggestion!
OMG, Superb.
Thank you Ivy
Very good tutorial. Thanks, but the music is very distracting. Harder to hear your presentation.
Thank you for your feedback
Thanks, a great time saver.
+John Simpson I'm glad it works for you. Thanks for the feedback.
How do you unzip a testbank when importing it to Moodle?
I am seeking the same help. The text file produced does not load into Moodle!
Could you add single questions after you have added your 7 questions? Can it be essay type questions?
Yes you can always add or delete questions to a specific quiz or to a quiz bank.
Thanks for the video.
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for good lesson
Much appreciated Garth
Which option should I be selecting if i am uploading the open question format?
+Jasper Chin that's an easy one :) use the GIFT format and your questions should be listed in this way on your text file. The example below has 3 sample questions.
Describe how attendance will be taken? {}
How are you expected to communicate with your professor? {}
What are the consequences of engaging in disruptive behavior and/or the use of profanity in class? {}
Useful video
Glad you liked it
Hi, i would like to see how to create a math exame, with open awser and students use symbols
That is a challenge. Importing symbols and quations doesn't work. You need to use the equation editor in Moodle.
@@Facultyworkshop thank you, we don´t have a open moodle in my school :(
Hi; great; Is there a simple way to import cloze questions?
!Thank you for this tutorial, it is very helpful
In a case that the students do a multiple choice questionnaire on real paper, is there a posibility to upload their answers (their choices)?
Hello pls I wanna ask is this moodle a local host or online.
I use both for my tutorials, but I prefer the local host as it is faster.
In the gift file format all I have to do is add #### ,and type the explanation for the answer to a question like so:
Type Question? {
~wrong answer option A
=correct answer option B
~wrong answer option C
~wrong answer option D
####EXPLANTION
}
I have a different problem now. I was trying to upload 100 Quiz questions, and I got this message
"If you're using a MySQL database for your Moodle installation, this error can be caused by the server's max_allowed_packet size being configured incorrectly. Increasing this value may resolve the issue."
Any idea what the problem might be?
I think I'll have to increase the value of max_allowed_packet but I don't exactly know how to do that. I have this setup on wampserver by the way.
+Chriskindle1 I'm using a XAMPP local installation for tutorial purposes, but it is very similar to WAMP. Try this:
1. Locate the my.ini file it should be in your WAMP folder under mysql>bin>. It should look something like this: C:\WAMP\mysql\bin\my.ini
2. Save a (backup) copy of the my.ini on your desktop, just in case you need to revert to the original version.
3. Open the my.ini file in Notepad, Notepad++, or jEdit
4. Under [mysqld] locate "max_allowed_packet = 1M" and increase it to a higher number 5M or 10M
5. Save the edited my.ini file and re-start your WAMP server
If this doesn't work you can always delete the edited file and replace it with the original that you saved on your desktop.
Try it and let me know how it goes. Good luck!
+FacultyWorkshop Thanks a bunch. I edited my.ini which was located in: c:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysqlx.y.z\my.ini.
It didn't work, but you steered me in the right direction, and I was able to increase it through my php.ini
All I had to do was find the php.ini in the right section of my desktop where my Wamp icon is located on Windows 7.
I then did a search for these in my php.ini:
post_max_size - changed From 8M to 1024000M
Upload_max_filesize - changed from 2M to 1024000M
It turns out that my questions weren't uploading because of the size; I found out after turning on the debug for my Moodle that it was another problem which looked something like this:
*Stack trace: *
• line 446 of \lib\dml\moodle_database.php: dml_write_exception thrown
• line 1164 of \lib\dml\mysqli_native_moodle_database.php: call to moodle_database->query_end()
• line 1210 of \lib\dml\mysqli_native_moodle_database.php: call to mysqli_native_moodle_database->insert_record_raw()
• line 398 of \question\format.php: call to mysqli_native_moodle_database->insert_record()
• line 119 of \question\import.php: call to qformat_default->importprocess()
This looked like gibberish nonsense to me, so I decided to enter the General Feedback after uploading the Questions separately in Aiken format like you showed in this video.
Is it possible to download directly from an Excel document??
What if I have multiple correct answers in the question. Just by simply writing ANSWERS: A B C would suffice
I created another video to demonstrate how to use multiple correct answers. Check it out at this link: ruclips.net/video/EeWoQREG-ls/видео.html
Thank you fo this, it's so helpfull
In my videos I selected the "Add questions from bank", instead of that option, select the "Add random question" and use the questions listed in your category.
nice explanation
Thank you Bhargav!
GREAT
Error importing question The ERECTOR SPINAE MUSCLE GROUP located intermediatelyQuestion not completed before next question start on line 115
can you tell me what the error message means? (the question is in the middle for the error message.

I'd suggest rewriting the questions and check that he are properly enter-returned and spaced.
Thanks for the much-needed information!
+Sherry Meeks It is my pleasure! Happy to be of service.
I had a question , I would like to be certified in Moodle course creator & administrator
and development
Like many Moodle users, I'm mostly self-taught through reading, informal training, and experimentation. If you're interested in a course, you may want to do look into the following. I have not taking this course myself, but if you are looking into getting certified, this may be an option: You may want to try www.moodlebites.com/mod/page/view.php?id=3210
Also, as an administrator, it would be helpful for you to have your own server with a Moodle installation for practice and testing purposes. You can do this on a regular computer or laptop, it doesn't have to be an actual server. You just need the server software like WAMP or XAMPP.
I think all Moodle has right now is the Moodle Certified Course Creator. See link below.
moodle.org/course/view.php?id=48§ion=3
You have to take the course, and a test, from a certified Moodle Partner. ELearning Experts gives the training, from time to time.
elearningexperts.net/
I think Moodle may be in the process of changing their certification process.
Thank you very much. It was very helpful. I want to know how to put grades.
What do you mean?
Great work. Thank you. can we do using page in apple
Thank you! Yes, you can replicate the process on a Mac in pages. Follow these steps:
1. Formatting your questions in pages as shown in the video.
2. Click "File"
3. Click "Export to"
4. Click "Plain Text..."
I would suggest testing this out with one or two questions and uploading the test file to Moodle before you spend time doing an entire quiz. Good luck!
Ways to export word document to book?
Can you elaborate on exactly what you're trying to accomplish?
Thank You so Much Sir:)
You're very welcome Dhanaraj
