I learned a great trick from another RUclips gardener to help germinate seeds that were recently planted. I of course water them in and then put a piece of burlap over the newly planted seeds and water thr burlap. The burlap stays on top until the seedlings emerge. it keeps them moist and protects from harsh sun. it's worked perfectly everytimr I've used it.
Kim, put the smart pots in the plastic pot saucers and they will wick water from the bottom. Carrots will seek the water adn grow nice and long.
Great suggestion, Charles - thanks so much for sharing - will try this. What else have you grow in Smart Pots? Appreciate you watching!
Very good information on growing carrots, radishes and beets in containers. I love growing my radishes and carrots especially in containers. :)
Glad you are enjoying growing root veggies in containers too. So easy in Smart Pots and the air pruning and nice loose soil makes for lots of tasty carrots, beets and radishes for you to enjoy! I also love how portable they are if you have to move them when the weather gets too cold or hot. Keep me posted on how yours do and thanks for watching!
The series keeps getting better Kim! You guys are doing an awesome job, love it! And I'm loving them SmartPots!!! Still need to get my carrots and beets planted and I can't wait!
Most root vegetables Luke having close friends. 3 or 4 per planting spot, do not thin. They grow great that way. And more per square foot! Got the tip from Charles Dowding.
Thanks for the tips!
Kim, I really enjoy your videos and finally broke down my reserve and ordered some grow bags and vermis products plus more...I just want to achieve a harvest we can put on the table and share with people! This was my first year and we pretty much ate one or two items at a time (like one okra pod or cherry tomato). I hope with the new products my fall garden will be more fruitful. Fingers crossed in Houston TX! 🙅😊
If people have problems growing long carrots, round parisian carrots grow like radishes in less than ideal soil. Mine self seed. I also like fabric pots. Great videos.
I am so excited! I planted carrots, radishes and beets in my new 10 gallon cloth pots. The radishes sprouted within a couple of days and the carrots and beets have sprouted as well. I will be planting lettuce in the next couple of days in my square foot garden. Your channel is the best!
Super exciting! Always fun to see those seedlings emerge. Thanks for your support, please keep me posted!
cali kim, if you dont have a tv show yet you should, your videos are always so informative, thank you
Glad you are liking the videos and learning from them - are you growing cool weather veggies in containers this fall? Thanks for watching!
My danvers carrots are sprouting. Can't tell you how exciting that is. I hope they keep growing!! So far every seed I got from MIgardener has germinated.
Great info! I too am in SoCal. But I think it's great that you referenced frost and other issues people in other areas will be encountering soon, and making recommendations based on colder weather. Personally, I'm hanging on for something under 90F, LOL. Good vid.
I enjoy watching you more and more everyday! Your always growing what I love to grow. Lol . I love those smartpots too. I definitly need to invest in some soon. Almost done with tilling my yard. Boy that's hard being we have sand and clay here mixed with dirt. Lol
Funny how that works with you gardeners! Thanks for hanging with us, Stacey. CameraGuy
You can feed carrot greens to chickens. They love them. Just tie twine around a bunch of carrot tops and suspend them so they swing. The chickens really have a good time eating them!
Love your border collie...such sweet dogs. I am going to try those pop up pots, if I can find them in Canada. Thanks for your videos.
A great use of beets is a Russian beet salad that I can't spell but I can pronounce because I learned it from a Godly woman who help me cook when I was going through a rough miscarriage . It consists of fresh beets, carrots and peas mixed with a vinaigrette and refrigerated for a day. I almost forgot she also had onion in it. everything is cut so its the size of a pea. Mix the veggies and dressing together before eating and Tatiana said that it is a good meal for feeding the blood. Having miscarried, she felt it would help me recover quickly. It was so wonderful and really nice in warm weather as it is ice cold and crisp. And it did help me feel better quickly. I understand the dirt taste but the vinaigrette evens out the flavors and the day to let the flavors meld helps that too.
Nice video Kim. Great way to keep getting fresh vegetables longer.
Thx for helpful information
New subscriber and newer gardener! Thanks for succinct, relatively short and no nonsense instructions! Your YT presentation is very professional and love your doggie! Living on top of a rock literally (Cumberland Plateau) and container gardening is the only way to go. We have both galvanized raised beds and cloth pots, not the same brand. This is my SIXTH attempt at radishes - the last 5 had leaves and a few measly roots and no radishes! I'm also growing a fall crop of spinach, beets, and carrots. Wish me luck!
+Nancy Illian, welcome, good luck, and thanks for joining our gardening community here! Sounds like you have found some great solutions to overcome the challenges posed for gardening in your environment. Keep me updated and happy gardening!
Awesome update thank you for sharing have a blessed day
You are welcome, Linda. I know you like to grow in containers in your greenhouse, have you ever tried Smart Pots? Thanks for stopping by!
No Calkim i have not as yet in the middle of cleaning green house then
will see what room I have after the clean as need to start sowing the
seeds that came last week from Luke
Great video! Still harvesting peppers and bitter melon, mesclun greens are growing, but am contemplating trying carrots again after seeing this video! Thanks, Kim!
Hello Clara - awesome that your warm weather veggies are still growing strong! I had a tough time growing carrots until I grew them in containers. This is my first time growing them in Smart Pots, and I know they will do well with the air pruning, good drainage and nice loose soil. I am finding that the breathable fabric does hold on to the moisture in the soil at just the right level.
Drains well, but doesn't dry out too quickly, even in the hot weather we've had the past week. I'm really impressed with these containers! Let me know if you give them a go - thanks for watching!
Great information,.. I live in Kentucky. Thanks
awesome information
Thanks, Vaun Dinger - glad you enjoyed it. Are you growing root veggies in containers?
Love that 15gal Smart Pot with handles! what a great idea!
I'm enjoying your videos. I used them for this past summer. As a 1st time Gardner. I've got a loong way to go. How do I regrow beets from the tops? If you can assist. Thank you
Very informative videos with great work from Camera Guy and easy instructions to help us brown thumbs turn into green thumbs. Congratulations and well done !!
We started a modest vegie garden in our 1/4 acre patch of suburbia 3 years ago and we have been very happy (and pleasantly surprised) with our results. We now have 5 raised garden beds which makes it so much easier on the back. We have made a few small boo boos along the way but we just learnt from them and moved on. Apart from having to buy a few vegies over the winter months we are very nearly self sufficient and have enough excess produce to give to friends and family along with the goodies I make with the produce such as pickled cucumbers, passata and chutney etc. Last year I harvested a total of approx 35 kilos of strawberries from 170 plants and I now have about 250 plants so I can't wait to see how many strawberries they produce this year.
Without RUclips videos such as yours we would still be floundering and probably growing more weeds than vegies !
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou !!
Kind Regards all the way from Australia
Hello Annette - so happy to hear that you are growing so much of your own food - what wonderful feeling that is. Nothing like garden fresh, tasty food that you can feel good about feeding to your family and sharing with your friends. Glad our videos have been helpful - love to share them with you!
Bet it's fun to plant your warm weather veggies there in Australia right now. Have you watched my $10 Garden Series for warm weather veggies, ruclips.net/p/PLH4z_9MDD00Lion_2NWKsyvPWLezSQ4-v? . Also the "How to Grow it" playlist is more in depth specifics on growing warm weather veggies as well, ruclips.net/p/PLH4z_9MDD00IfxKf-s1sY-JeXYxt5IhbY. Hope these videos are helpful and you are able to have a huge harvest again this spring!
Thanks so much for watching!
Hi again
Many thanks for the extra info and links. I have watched a few of them but will now have to sit down and binge watch the whole lot - might grab some popcorn LOL
As for warm weather vegies, I live in mid New South Wales (3 hr drive from Sydney) which can still get a little chilly until mid to late October. Rule of thumb here is that we don't plant out tomatoes until then due to the frosts we sometimes get. Even though we only get a very light snowfall about once every 5 to 7 years, every so often we can see snow on the mountains from our backyard (snowfields are about 2 hr drive away).
So no tropical fruit or veg grown here, worse luck.
Again, many thanks for your help which is greatly appreciated.
Happy growing
Annette
You are so welcome - keep me posted on your warm weather veggies, and have a fun binge watching, ha, ha! Happy Gardening!
Ahh I didn’t thin my first beets out! No wonder they’ve been a bit naff
Got my SmartPots today. Can't wait to use them!
First timer for fall garden. I live n Northern California. I planted beets and parsnip, and three types of lettuce. I'm growing in raised beds. I don't know about beets or parsnip in growing. I'll let you know.
Great video! Thanks for sharing :)
That bag is a great idea. I'll probably pick up a couple. Always enjoy your videos :)
Hello KIsa - I am so hooked on them - a wonderful way to grow nice healthy plants (which means more FOOD) and get more growing space too! What do you plant to grow in them? Glad you are enjoying the videos - thanks for watching!
I just found your videos the other day, and since then, I've been watching them back to back!! You and Gary ate my garden heros:)
I grow my carrots in 60/40 sand and soil so they're nice and straight. Remove anything hard from the mix. No sticks, stones, or anything hard. Use builders not play sand. Some people use up to 90% sand in their mix
Can you pl advice as regards to controlling pests and insects in beetroot plants
CaliKim, I've been watching your videos for so long and just realized that I'm not subscribed, well now I am so that I can see what you're doing next! Thank you for putting out great content, I've learnt so much from you! I have a pest in my garden that's killing all my beet leaves. The leaves have some white spots on them before they dry out and die. What kind of pest is that and how can I get rid of them? I tried pesticidal soap
Another great video. Look forward to your next one.
Renato - so glad you enjoyed it! Are you growing root veggies? Thanks for watching!
She's selling smart pots people...
Love your videos. Started watching them 2 years ago. Spinach is the only plant I feel confident about growing till now.
Any tips for broccoli? I tried two years and both times I got very small flower.
Can you please make some videos of meals with the fall crops?
Hello Kimberly - I will be sure to show you how to make a few of my favorite recipes as soon as I have some to harvest. Do you follow me on Instagram, Instagram: ruclips.net/user/CaliKim29, or Facebook, facebook.com/CaliKimGardenandHomeDIY/? I post lots of pictures, garden tips and meal ideas over there. Thanks for watching!
great camera work, great video & garden info.
Thanks, lynch - so glad you enjoyed it and are learning from the videos. Are you growing your fall garden in containers?
Hey Kim- another great video. Thank you. Any suggestions on planting fruit trees and citrus trees in large containers?
Kim could you make a video on how to plant coriander or cilantro or time or parsley like in one container like you're using the 15 gallon with the handles? thank you for sharing your root vegetable video. I'll be waiting for an answer.
Hello Susan, herbs are so easy and fun to grow in containers - I do have a video planned for this series on how to grow herbs in the Smart Pots,, so make sure to stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
Hi CaliKim,
I am a subscriber to your channel and website.
I love your videos so much!😝
Isabel
Hi Isabel - thanks so much for subscribing to my channel and website - really appreciate your support! How's the fall garden coming along?
It's growing great!😉
enjoyed your video
How much soil do u add to the fabric grow bags & can u use potting soil mix🤔
Hi Kim, do you ever use soil conditioners that contain bat guano? Is this still considered organic? I am a first time gardener, and someone suggested Happy Frog soil conditioner. Is this necessary? I am using Dr. Earth soil, compost from a local yard, and not sure what else. Please let me know if you have the time. Thanks!
Yes it is good
I love root vegetables. I have never heard of the hailstones white radish. I am interested in seeing yours when you harvest them. Did you purchase the seeds from MI Gardener? Love this fall garden series. Thank for all the useful advice. Appreciate it greatly. :)
Hi Pam - root veggies are the perfect fall crop - and radishes are so easy to grow. Yes, I did get those from MIgardener, use the link in the video description for 10% off. Are you growing any root veggies in containers? So easy! I love the Smart Pots - they add a ton of growing space, are so economical too. Keep me posted on your fall garden!
It was 104 here in san fernando today :( waiting for it to cool off
HI Amy, Yes, it's been toasty here in So Cal! Looking forward to the cool fall weather - hopefully soon so our cool weather veggies can do some growing! Thanks for watching!
What is the planting depth for beets? Is it the same as you noted for your radishes of 8 in?
I’m starting my first small container garden soon too, had many failures in the back with bad soil and wrong selection. So I’m surprise you didn’t have to add any kind of fertilizer, is it really that easy to grow these ?
Kim,
Why do you cut the plant out instead of just pulling them out to thin them out? Wont the vegetable still grow if you just cut off the top? Should I pull them out or cut them to thin them? I'm talking about radishes.
I love your videos!!
Pam
So Calif.
Hello Pam, I like to cut them out so I don't disturb the roots of the veggies I am leaving in. The remaining seedlings are so tiny at this point and might not survive if they are damaged. I do check every few weeks and thin again if need be. Watch this video for more thinning tips: ruclips.net/video/BFI2cr4tYNs/видео.html. Hope this helps!
Nice dog
My carrot seeds sprout but then the seedlings die back. It was 100 degrees here this past Tuesday! Should I delay my carrots until the days go back down to 70-75 degrees?
Just wondering if there's any specific reason that you used potting "mix" for the big smart pot, but potting "soil" for this episode on other pots?
great vid! Can we grow radishes and carrots in those 9 inch deep circular grow bags? I have a problem kim with my white icicle radishes. they are 2 months old but i find no bulbs under the soil. just a long lanky white thin stem going underneath (some 6 inches deep). the leaves look great though. what to do? thanks
I planted the laziest beets in the world. 1 month in and half of them can't decide if they want to play along or not
im waiting for your succulent bed garden wheres the video ??? I subscribed just to see succulents because i love it
Hello Indra - We were on vacation for a few weeks, so succulent bed just got planted - I am so happy with how it turned out. The video is scheduled to be posted this week - so stay tuned! Are you growing any fall veggies? Thanks so much for subscribing!
no, only flowering plants and succulents lol 😁
Cant wait for the video 😉 i live in indonesia so theres no fall season in here 😂
Should be posted mid week - let me know what you think. How about growing some warm weather veggies or herbs? Containers are a great way to start, its easy to grow a tomato, peppers or herbs for cooking in a container. Keep me posted!
I'm curious why every one plants close together, than later has to thin them out? Is it possible for me to just plant them as far apart as needed for the entire life of the plant?
By the way, I'm in So Cal also; in the high desert. I only asked my question since I'm trying to learn and you have been an inspiration to me.
hi kim, can you use the organizer boxes that you can get from the dollar store for planting also? it kinds looks like the same type of material as your smart pots. Please advise, thanks
Susan Lopez Hi Susan. I used those organizer bags from the dollar store but they broke apart too fast. Not very durable. What I did use was their small plastic round and square bins that around a foot tall. I used the ones that have holes all around them and lined them with garden fabric. I got the idea from learning about air roots. The plant roots grow and instead of possible root bound the roots hit the sides of the pot by the holes and branch out and are stronger. Anyway I grew a lot of peppers and carrots this way last summer. Try that. It worked for me.
Love you videos! They are so inspiring! Question for you, I have a problem with the beets not forming large roots. They get thinned out and the soil is loose. Any suggestions?
Hi Kristina - so glad you are loving the videos - hope they are helping you grow more of your own food. Sorry you are having trouble growing beets - they do grow best in the cooler weather (under 80 degrees F) and nice deep watering. How is the weather right now where you live?
I live in Arizona where it is still around high 80's to low 90's. I will try again when it is a little cooler and I will do deeper watering. Thanks for the help!
is that a fall tank top?
I understand you are located in Southern California. Will these root veggies grow up north of you? I am located in Washington state, 10 miles south of the Canadian border, on the western side.
Tammy Hanson I also live in Washington. I do t know what I do wrong but I can grow everything above ground but have a terrible time with root veggies, even radishes! Maybe I plant too deep. I have lots of leaves and no bulb. :(. I have an awning on my back porch facing West. All my herbs and even some annual flowers last year long there, protected from cold and rain. Happy gardening!
What brand of potting soil are you using?
Hi Kim. Help! I can grow above ground but none of my root veggies grow. I get the greens but that is all. I can’t figure it out. Any special fertilizer I’m missing. I have a beautiful rolling planter about 4’x2’ I made of pallet wood and made sure I had great soil. The leaves are great but no fruit. Could I have planted too deep?
I had the same problem with the radishes that I planted. I found radishes at least need to be planted in low nitrogen environment or you get a lot of greens and no bulb.
instead of smart pots, can you use re-usable grocery bags?
Chad Lutrell I did with no problem. Some might say the dyes in the bags are bad. You can even make your own out of yard fabric and waterproof glue or if you sew it’s super easy. I also said above you can take Dollar Tree plastic bins with the holes and line them. I grew a lot of peppers that way.
What do you mean by thinning them?
If root veggies are not thinned, they will have a hard time growing the roots, because they will be too crowded to grow the carrots, beets or radishes properly. I like to thin them to 3-4 apart simply by taking a small pair of scissors and snipping the stems of the extra plants. This way you don't disturb the roots of the plants you want to leave in, like you would if you were to pull up the extra plants. I'll be sure to post a video when mine are ready to be thinned so you know how to do it. You can also just grow these veggies just for the greens, in which case, you can grow them closer together, since the roots don't need the space to grow. Thanks for watching!
Good info. Nice hairdo! :)
What potting soil do u use? Thank you.
I like Dr. Earths, but there are many good brands out there. Just use what you can find at your local garden center.
Thank you. :*)
I is tropical
What soil did you use?
Dr earth pot of gold
I did use Dr. Earth Pot of Gold, - there is a link in the video description where you can purchase it if you like. I've tried several kinds, and this always works very well for me. Thanks for watching!
🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒🍒
Yea I’ll be kind but you push your produce’s a bit to hard. Understand but not really worth watching your channel
