UKRAINE WAR: Disaster for Putin! "A complete failure!" A tough reckoning from an ex-colonel!
Following the cross-border advance by Ukrainian soldiers, Russia has ordered evacuations in a second region. 11,000 people were brought to safety from a border district of the Belgorod Oblast alone, the state news agency Tass reported on Monday. Belgorod is next to the Kursk region, into which Ukrainian forces advanced almost a week ago. According to the governor of Kursk, Alexei Smirnov, they have so far advanced twelve kilometers into Russian territory and have brought 28 settlements under their control. President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of wanting to destabilize Russia. However, this will not succeed. His country will react to the advance.
The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, justified the evacuation with "enemy activities on the border" which posed a threat. In the neighboring Kursk region, Russia managed to stabilize the front on Sunday. However, according to Russian war bloggers, fighting continued in part of the area on Monday. The Defense Ministry in Moscow announced that Ukrainian attacks had been repelled at at least eight different locations in Kursk. 32 Ukrainian tanks were destroyed and five drones were shot down over Belgorod and eleven over Kursk during the night.
Citing the governor of the Kursk region, the state news agency RIA reported that Ukrainian troops had used chemical weapons during their advance. It was initially unclear whether Governor Smirnov had provided evidence to support this allegation. Reuters cannot verify the allegation.
PRO-RUSSIAN BLOGGER: SITUATION IN WEST BELGOROD ALARMING
According to Russian war bloggers, Ukrainian units in the Kursk region are trying to encircle the town of Sudzha, where an important gas pipeline facility is located. There are also major battles near Korenevo, which is about 20 kilometers from the border, and Martinovka. In western Belgorod, the situation in the border area is alarming, wrote the influential pro-Russian military blogger Yuri Podolyaka. Ukraine is present on the border "with three fairly large groups."
The Ukrainian advance into Kursk is the largest into Russian territory since the war began in February 2022. Russia was apparently not prepared for this. It has since significantly tightened security measures in Kursk and the Belgorod and Bryansk regions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy justified the advance into Russian territory at the weekend by saying that they wanted to put pressure on Moscow's troops and "restore justice".
Putin said Ukraine was apparently trying to slow down Russia's advance elsewhere on the front and improve its negotiating position. But he wondered how to negotiate with people who were firing on civilians. Observers do not rule out that Kiev hopes the action will give it greater leverage if talks on a ceasefire are held after the US presidential election in November.

According to a government spokesman in Washington, the USA, which is one of Kiev's most important supporters, was not informed in advance by Ukraine about the move. A German government spokesman in Berlin said the operation was "apparently very secret and without feedback". Everything so far looks like a limited-area operation. When asked whether weapons supplied by Germany would be used in the operation, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said that Ukraine had promised to use the weapons within the framework of international law.
