Encompass, winner of the 2016 Howard Hanson Ensemble Prize, was written for the Graduate Composers Sinfonietta at the Eastman School of Music. The piece deals with the difficulties of new beginnings, saying goodbyes, and finding a sense of place. These ideas manifest in the aggressive frustration of the first movement and in the pale, icy, prickly melancholy in the second.
