This video was super helpful! I just thought I would add in the information that if people are concerned about the crash test rating that the Medium Gunner crate is only tested up to 45lbs, and the Intermediate is tested up to 75 lbs. That needs to be taken into account alongside the actual height & length of the dog. My heeler is a weird size - 32 inches long, 20 inches at the shoulder, but a solid 50 lbs and still growing. I didn't end up going with Gunner because I need to fit two crates in my vehicle and the intermediate would be too big, but if I had, I would have had to go with the intermediate in order to be within the crash rate standards for safety.
This was so informative! Gunner website recommended an intermediate for my corgi who’s on the longer side, but based on this video, I think the medium would be better suited. Thanks for the great video! I also love seeing how well trained the doggos are :)
Hi @@EngagedK9 thank you for this video! I'm wondering if you'd be willing to share how long Camila is? She's the same height as my pup but my dog may be a bit longer, and the site recommended a medium. I'm trying to decide if I might need to go for a different brand since he might be between sizes for gunner. TYSM!
Thanks so much for posting this video. It's been so helpful. Like one of the other posters, I've been looking at Gunner crate sizes for a corgi. In the Gunner web site reviews, it seems most corgi folks go with a small or medium. For my petite girl (22 pounds and less than 10 inches at the withers), I've ordered a small and am cautiously optimistic it will be a good fit for her. The corgi build is the challenge. If the small doesn't work for her length, it can be exchanged for a medium. The potential extra shipping costs are worth it, to try to get her the safest fit.
Holy Smokes, your dogs are so obedient! I have much work to do. Kona is intensely focused on you. And Kali is absolutely amazing! Ruger is so good looking.
Very helpful. I've been wondering about sizes for my 22", 55# Siberian. Looks like a medium will work well for him if it works for your Dutch Shep. Beautiful dogs and great crate training, BTW!
How long do you think dogs can travel in a kennel like this without a stretch? I might have to drive 3,500 km with my dog and I'm still learning about the safest way to travel with her, as I want her to be as safe and comfortable as possible
My Aussie loves curling up in a ball so she’d also fit the small 🤣 but I find my poodle chooses smaller places and my aussies larger spaces so I ended up getting them the same size for at home.
😂😂 @ 0:40 when Kamila let you know she did the trick. If it weren’t for this video my min pin would have had a luxury suite bc I almost bought him a large. Quick question where did you get the custom nameplate for Ruger? Thanks!
Gunner recommended an intermediate for my pup but seeing the fit with your dogs I think mine is definitely too big. My dog is fully grown at about 43 lbs and 22 inches at the shoulders. With an intermediate curled up in the back he takes up probably just over 1/2 of the kennel. I was worried about sizing down, but this makes me more comfortable to switch to a medium. We upgraded from an intermediate Ruffland, so it's interesting to see how the sizes vary across different brands.
What would you recommend for a 40 lb Border Collie for traveling overseas in the cargo hold of a plane? I'm PCSing to Japan and am trying to find a good fit that is going to be comfortable enough for him to ride 14 hours in a plane in. He's 19-20 inches high at the shoulder and 30-31 when laying with his front paws stretched in front of him. I want him to be safe but comfortable for a 14 hour plane ride.
You’ll need to look up the airlines requirements for kennel size to your dogs size. From what I understand there a certain total weight requirement for dog and kennel. I also believe your dog needs to be able to stand up straight and not touch the roof of the kennel including ears and be able to turn around. Again, you need to check the international airline requirements.
I’m stuck between medium and small. I have a working mini Goldendoodle who weighs at 22 pounds just like her brother . What would you suggest for a working dog, also I’m in AZ so I want to do a pad and fan attachment to the kennel.
Travel/car crate sizing is much different than at home crate sizing. For traveling, you don't want room for your dog to be able to be thrown around. At home, they need room to be able to stand, sit, stretch, lay down stretched out, etc.
Hi! I'm wondering how long is Ruger from nose to butt? My dog is 55 lbs so Intermediate seems good except he has a long body (48") and Gunners calculator recommends Large based on the length (being longer than 43").
I have a heeler mix that’s 40-45 lbs and 20 inches at the shoulder. He rides in an intermediate Ruffland right now, but would a medium gunner kennel be too small? I love the locking doors on the gunner, but the intermediate would be too big to fit into the cab of my Tacoma.
My Heeler is about 20in at the shoulder but 30lbs and she can turn around easily, however, if she was much bigger I don’t know she could move in to turn around as easily. If you can send me a DM on Instagram, west_coast_heeler_pack I can try and show you a better video of her getting in and out for reference.
This is so helpful! I was thinking my small birder collie should ride in an intermediate but now I know that’s definitely too large for her. She weighs 29 pounds and is 18” at the shoulder - now my dilemma is if she should ride in a medium or small? My concern with the small is that she’s rather long - 33” from nose to base of tail. Do you have a recommendation of which kennel would be safest for her?
Medium would be snug, which is optimal in a crash. Personally, I'd go with intermediate for better cooling/ventilation especially for long car rides. Everything is a trade-off.
What size would you recommend for a 60 pound lab mix that's 22 inches tall at the shoulder? (He's muscular not fat) I'm assuming he's between a medium and intermediate but I am curious if the kennel would fit in the backseat of a sedan style car
It's just treats, as soon as the thing they want outweighs what they value the treat as, you won't have control of the dog. I recomened the plastic command collar, Search Starmark collar on amazon
She has training courses that you can buy, and I would also recommend checking out Leerburg. I use e-collars, but it is important to understand that an e collar won't teach anything.
Love your Videos but in Europe it is illegal to transport dogs in boxes if they can not stand upright and even have an additional 10cm of air space when they sitting. I’m a little shocked by the size selection for the Aussies that small would be better, but I’m happy they travel in a Medium. 😁
I agree, that very snug fit is something one sees for hunting dogs, but it in no way meets air travel criteria, nor does it work well for extended road travel, in my opinion.
@@sprucehounds516 its recommended in the sense of dog safety in the event of an accident, not comfortability for the animal. sure the larger one is better for travel regulations but in a vehicle accident the extra room would cause more harm. i guess the recommendation depends on your use case
Does anyone know anyone who has a small used gunner for a puppy? I don’t want to buy two new ones. At a $1000 for the intermediate and another $600 for a small for 2-3 months. Thats way too much. Anyway used small anyone?
Based upon what I learned on the Gunner website the deciding factor when sizing these kennels should always be safety. The dogs in your video look far too small for the intermediate. They would tend to slip and slide during travel and perhaps be hurt if a minor accident or worse occurred. Of course I am making an assumption that the primary reason for buying Gunner brands is for travel due to their premium price.
Those pups are amazingly well-trained!

While the more snug fit is ideal, you just want to make sure your dog can still turn around.

It can, yes. If your dog struggles to get into the kennel and turn around.
