Athletic Bilbao has an all basque player policy, basically meaning they can only recruit/buy people from the basque region (Rhode Island is bigger) which makes them one of the more unique clubs in the world. Historically they are the only teams along with Real Madrid and Barcelona who never been relegated from the Spanish top division. They also won 8 league titles (4th most in the Spanish history) and is still considered a top 8 club in Spain.
Well i was just going to suggest Bilbao as a team to look at next with their basque only policy and then i saw this as the top comment. It's quite funny to me cos if a PL team said they only wanted to use English players they would be called Brexit FC lol
Athletic Bilbao's recruitment policy is similar to the Euskatel cycling team from the Basque region. Euskatel had to drop down a level because of this purposeful recruitment of lesser riders. But, that Athletic Bilbao has remained in the top tier of Spanish football with a limiting of player talent is amazing.
@@USC9210 Remember getting really into cycling from playing a Pro Cycling Manager demo back in a day where you controlled Euskatel during a Tour de France stage. Still to this day seeing supporters waive the Basque flags during TDF makes me cheer up.
Actually the Basque country, the Spanish autonomous community is really small, probably smaller than Rhode Island, but Euskal Herria, which is the land that has Basque roots and culture, and also the land that independentists Basque people claims is bigger than that. Euskal Herria claims the whole of Basque Country, the whole of Navarre (which is actually bigger than Basque Country) small bits of Castilla y León and Cantabria autonomous communities, and also the French Basque Country in southern France (Aymeric Laporte was actually born in the French Basque country and he played in Bilbao). So if you were born in any of those places you could technically play in Athletic Club Bilbao. On a side note Real Sociedad also used to have that Basque only player policy a while ago, but they don't do it anymore
If you're into books - there's a good book about this rivalry called "Fear and Loathing in La Liga" - the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship was incredibly tragic. Joan Gamper - the founder of Barcelona took his own life in the 30s after he lost all of his money during the Great Depression. A Barcelona executive was actually executed without trial by Franco's troops during the war. That whole time is not that well known outside of Spain, even in the UK, because basically the global community decided to turn a blind eye to it because they couldn't afford to be distracted from the threat of Nazi Germany. During the Second World War, Spain under Franco was officially neutral, but it's generally accepted that Franco was offering heavy support to the Nazis. British spies actually used that to their advantage. They were able to send "businessmen" to the "neutral" country of Spain and get them to "accidentally" tell Spanish government officials fake secrets, because they knew the goverment officials would probably give that information back to Germany and it would help cloud the waters mixing this fake info in with any real info they might have intercepted.
Franco outlawed the Basque and Catalan languages and forced Athletic Bilbao to change their name to Atletico. They went back to Athletic after Franco s death.
Luke, you have to watch the video about El Classico fights. There is a video with 19 million views. I remember a period from 2009 to 2013 when every El Classico game was a blockbuster. You got the story right. Except Di Stefano actually signed for Barcelona first. Then Franco got involved and Armando Calero told them that he would play 1 season for Real Madrid and 1 season for Barcelona. In response, Barcelona sold their half to Real Madrid rather than having to share the player.

There were as many republicans in Madrid as there were in Catalonia, and Madrid was the last city to fall against Francos army. Another layer of knowledge for why soccer means what it means around the world, and why the relegation system works; because the teams are rooted in deep, historical local identities - and local rivalries. So when they play - it is your region / city that plays. This is also why inter-national football, as in soccer played by national teams, is the most prestigious, desired, and ultimately passionate level of soccer. Because the players "act" (represent) like "soldiers" of the country, "fighting" (peacefully, yet physically) other countries' "soldiers," on an equal playing field - where what matters is not size, or economic power, but skill and ability (talent). This is why Netherlands, although having 17 million inhabitants, is and was a defining power in soccer. And let's not mention world-historical powers like Uruguay or Hungary, which have crucially shaped the game, or more recently Croatia with 4 million etc.
But what the video still misses - I don't know why - is that at the heart of the rivalry is the fact that FCB represents Catalunya, a region with a very different language and culture than "Spanish," which (in large part) wants independence; so much so, that the colors of FCB are the colors of the Catalan flag, that players from FCB have at times expressed disdain about playing for Spain, that supporters at Camp Nou have booed the Spanish "national anthem" etc. Same thing, by the way, with the Basque region (another region with a completely different language and culture than "Spanish"), and Athletic Bilbao. Furthermore, Bilbao's policy is of hiring only (or in large part just) players from the Basque region. In Catalunya, Espanol Barcelona has the same policy. And this goes further back in history, to the formation of the "Spanish" state, which was - as often with the modern states - a forcible "unification" of regions of different languages and cultures, many of whom did not want to become part of this new state - and of imposing on them (unsuccessfully) - an artificial "common" language etc. And now you can understand why the relegation system works - because, as a fan, it does not matter (in terms of your allegiance) - as you will continue to support your team, because it is "yours" - it represents your identity, history - who you are.
Luke in general never ever compare political terms with those political terms used in the USA. Especially when it comes down to the meanings of "political left + political right". In the US way of thinking "the political left" are all "Socialists + Communists" but in Europe there is "a political left" in every country called "Social Democrats" and none of those are "Socialists or Communists" because we have in every country a "Capitalist System" which "actual Socialsist + actual Communists" never had and never wanted and always fought against. The only US politician who act - kinda like - in a "Social democratic manner" is Bernie Sanders, just to give you an idea.. Republicans in Spain were always on the left political spectrum and stood for so to say "Power to the people" = "Republic" and were therefore always the political counterpart to the Spanish Nationalists who were Fascists and General Franco was their leader and stood for so to say "Power to the elites" = "Monarchy" (although General Franco was the man in charge acting like a dictator from 1936 till to his death in 1975 and the King was more then less just his puppet). And also the Catalans + the Basque were always against the "Franco Miltary Regime" besides they always wanted to split up from Spain anyway...(even to this day).
I'm a Turkish citizen, our republican party is also leftist and secular, we also have the extreme nationalist right party allied with the islamic rightist party in power.
Luke. You MUST look into South American football teams. Specially San Lorenzo from Argentina. Its truly a fascinating heartfelt, heartbreaking story. They deserve to be nominated for the passion and devotion that their fans have put to keep the team alive even during times when the dictatorship ruling argentina tried to make them disappear 😢
Luke: Pope Francis (unlike most of his predecessors) is a big soccer fan and he supports San Lorenzo and the Argentina national side, larger for the socio-political history and context.
About sport and politics, there's some people that usually say "don't mix politics and sport", but that's a lie in itself because every human social interaction (not only sport but art, culture, health, etc) is political in itself in one way or another.
We are in the most lucrative tie in domestic football, 1 game to decide promotion to the premier league, after being in wrexhams division 10 years ago. 1 player has been with us the whole time
The Republicans in Spain were the left wing because the most conservative, religious and pro-military were usually the monarchists. In 1931, after 7 years of another dictatorship and many more of crisis in the government, local elections were held and the anti-royalist coalitions won in all major cities and overall in the country, although by a narrow margin. The king Alfonso XIII abdicated (he quit) and the Republic was proclaimed. Five years later, part of the military attempted a coup to overthrow the leftist government, which had been democratically elected barely 6 months before the coup. Those people had the support of the royalist and the former monarch himself, the Catholic church, the Spanish equivalent to the Fascists and Nazis, most of the other right wing parties, the big aristocrat landowners...you get the picture. From the beginning of the war until the present, republicanism in Spain is only seen in the left of the left (it's a multi-party system). There's no right wing republicans now as far as I know.
My brother, you still don't know the real world soccer derby, The SUPERCLASSIC. Two rivals who were born in the same neighborhood. A popular neighborhood. One decided to go to the richest area of the city. The other stayed in his neighborhood. You should know the true sports rivalry that can only be experienced in Argentina, if we talk about football. Boca Juniors vs. riverplate. Greetings from the country that produced the two most talented players in history. Messi and Maradona.
Madrid was the center of the dictatorship, General Franco used the football club Real Madrid which was then the biggest team in Europe who had vast resources to buy any players as a political tool to suppress those states even more. The matches of football club Barcelona, a Catalan club was the last resort of the Catalan people to raise their voice against the Spanish dictatorship and Camp Nou, the home stadium of Barcelona was the only place to do that. In 1973, Johan Cruyff was invited to Real Madrid But Cruyff refused the offer by saying that he won’t play for the dictator’s team and went to join the Barcelona. Catalan flags were banned in the club logo, catalan languages, cultural programs were banned and Even a Barcelona president named Josep sunyol was murdered by Franco's military. Hence, Fc Barcelona became more than a club for Cryuff and many more.
There's something fundamentally wrong in this video, as it says that some of Barcelona's directives and backroom staff got along with Franco and rewarded and honored him, whilst Franco built the Camp Nou for Barcelona. That's wrong, one of the first things Franco did was order and assassination for Barça's president, putting a man who wasn't a Barça member as his replacement to gain control over the club (explaining why Franco received honors and a membership from Barcelona). Also, Barcelona was forced to change their name from Futbol Club Barcelona (in Catalan) to Club de Futbol Barcelona (in Spanish) as Catalan was forbidden in Spain. The Camp Nou was built because at first, Franco intended to use Barcelona as the propaganda club as they were the best side in Spain, but as soon Madrid got better Franco didn't miss the opportunity to make them the favorite club of both the regime and Spanish royalty/power.
An extremely generous glossing over of a fascist military coup against the democratically elected government 😂😂… a coup backed by Hitler and Mussolini nonetheless who both sent weaponry to aid Franco… which helped them dial in their usage a few years later 👀
The historical use of sports as a propaganda tool is why lots of us are uneasy with jet fighters over flying stadiums and military bands at sports events we saw occurring in the US. I don't know if that's still happening and how you experienced this and, to be honest, if this even occurred to the extent that we were shown here in Europe.
@@lukessportsacademy its not rare for a clasico to have more viewership than even a champions league knockout round game so its basically one of the most valuable sport events every year even the friendlies

Very one sided to Barcelona being the victim and Madrid the goverment team. Actually there are other versions. For instance the semis of 43 are commented but no that Barcelona wonmore copas del Generalisimo than any other team. Franco help several times BCN to sell their terrains at higher price to build the stadium etc. good reaction though
Today there is no longer that factor of political rivalry between the teams, in fact the ultras of both teams are of an extreme right-wing ideology. PS: Why do they always forget Galicia when they talk about the regions with nationalist tendencies in Spain?
The video is wrong in the wah they put franco being opressive towards barcelona. In fact barcelona won almost every league and condecorated franco four times in 15 years. Real madrid’s lost some players in the war, some were banned from the country and some killed being prosecuted by franco. Plus barcelona stadium was supported by franco, getting them out of banckupcy 3 times, and easing them land to build it. Frnaco also killed one president from reak madrid in the war. Actually franco inaugurated Camp nou, while during the period of the war real Madrid had to dismantle the stadium to get wood to give to the people in the winter.

There is a good RUclips video on San Lorenzo on the COPA90 channel. And of course, the COPA 90 "Derby Days" video on El Classico is a superb watch.
About sport and politics, there's some people that usually say "don't mix politics and sport", but that's a lie in itself because every human social interaction (not only sport but art, culture, health, etc) is political in itself in one way or another.
so you know they prob wont be full strength but they will have quite a bit of starters bc friendly or not its an el clasico
Luke, have you heard of luton town yet?
Someone mentioned them in my last live chat
@@lukessportsacademy I've mentioned them a few times. Make sure you watch the game on the 27th
You should see the Real Madrid video answer to FC Barcelona always accusing Real Madrid of being the regime's team.
That's why you are small can't Even Put your 14 UCL on the table
U should react to Alfredo Di Stefano, the most important player in Real Madrid's history.
man united vs liverpool next!
He did only explained only the bit portions to balance both the fans 😅
You should Check more videos about this rivalry, btw I am a FCB supporter
Oh cry more Barcelona Fan
Do Stefano Was The GOAT of that time 👑😅
EI EI EI Ohhhh UP THE PREMIER LEAGUE WE GO
When we get to EUROPE this is what we'll sing
WE ARE GEORDIES SUPER GEORDIES
Eddie is our King!
An extremely generous glossing over of a fascist military coup against the democratically elected government 😂😂… a coup backed by Hitler and Mussolini nonetheless who both sent weaponry to aid Franco… which helped them dial in their usage a few years later 👀
Need to do the old firm one next best derby rabona tv the guy who done this vid says it’s arguably the biggest derby in football
Biggest rivalry to francos regime are my basque cousins
The historical use of sports as a propaganda tool is why lots of us are uneasy with jet fighters over flying stadiums and military bands at sports events we saw occurring in the US.
I don't know if that's still happening and how you experienced this and, to be honest, if this even occurred to the extent that we were shown here in Europe.
geometry
Did you mean "Geography" Luke?😂😂
Lol, I assumed people caught the joke? Lol 😂 I tried to give an extra glance to the camera to indicate I was joking 🙃
only player to never lose in El classico is Michael Laudrup 🎉
Geometry😂😂😂
DI STEFANO
wth 400 bucks for a pre season game? what are they smoking in the us?
How is a b team el classico in america so expensive
It’s wild. Even a Super Bowl ticket is a little cheaper (not much)
@@lukessportsacademy you are better off not going i feel like, this is one more example of greed in football
@@lukessportsacademy its not rare for a clasico to have more viewership than even a champions league knockout round game so its basically one of the most valuable sport events every year even the friendlies
Dont forget how many americans would have spat on jesse owens because of being black in 1936. Is not like americans didnt have racists then or now. Especially fox news watchers in texas
your beard is lit u look like a lion
Wait until you watch Rangers vs Celtic
A) I'm gonna mock you about geometry.
B) For reference, copa de pena means pity cup.
A) It was a joke 😂. Note the glance back at the camera directly afterward.
B) The cup is not called Copa de Pena but Copa de Peña. The literal translation is The Cup of the Friends.
Oh Jesse Owens was it, he said that he enjoyed Germany so sorry about that Mister 🤷🏻♂️
He forgot to mention Michael Laudrups back to back 5-0 5-0 - ruclips.net/video/sHIYxo1ujds/видео.html
PS: Why do they always forget Galicia when they talk about the regions with nationalist tendencies in Spain?
porque no tiene el poder de las otras regiones
America uses sport as propaganda plenty and all the time. Just pay attention to how often the NFL advertises our military.
Story of europe very stronng, and amaricans not undetstand it
