    I guess you would say that the turret traverse rate is the "Achilles" heel of the M10.

    • @alantorres7916
      @alantorres7916 7 лет назад +3

      Captain Munchins yes but also the driver and co driver's hach can't be open when the turret is facing forward so if the tank gets hit and the crew needs to get out the gunner needs to turn the turret to the left or right then they can get out

    love how people complained about the Firefly having the same ammo choices as the Achilles, yet no one seems to notice the same is true for the Wolverine and Sherman with them having the same ammo options.

    • @cipher2862
      @cipher2862 9 лет назад

      Yes but the firefly is at a much higher BR, that's why everyone was complaining

    • @gusd913
      @gusd913 9 лет назад

      Both the 76mm sherman and the firefly are at 5.0, while the Wolverine and Achilles are at 3.7

    That Seventeen-pounder looks delicious. I was worried, at first, that the lack of filler in the shell might be a problem, but they seem to be doing pretty well without it.

    "I'm firing 17 pdrs, this ain;'t no 76mm's"
    Well.... errrm.... aaaaaaaactually the 17pdr was 76.2mm and the difference between the 17pdr and the American m1 76mm gun was how much propellant was used. The additional propellant in the 17pdr allowed the shell to fly faster and farther and penetrate deeper, but at a cost of accuracy,
    Which in turn is why the Americans never adopted it -- the 76mm was powerful enough in nearly all cases to penetrate German armor, and since the vast majority of tank on tank battles were decided in the first shot, the Americans decided that the ability to actually hit the target with that shot was more important than raw penetrating power. Since the Sherman won nearly every major engagement against German armor it encountered that turned out to be the right decision.

    • @sgtsmith501
      @sgtsmith501 8 лет назад +1

      +hagamapama Unless it was beyond 1000m and was a tiger or panther... then again tigers accounted for less than 20% of german tanks and panthers around 20-30%

    • @OriginalOmgCow
      @OriginalOmgCow 8 лет назад +2

      +hagamapama
      In reality, the American 76mm was inadequate for all forward engagements, they could just replace them faster than German armour. It was a BAD decision that cost many Allied lives.

    • @hagamapama
      @hagamapama 8 лет назад +3

      The raw data doesn't back that up omgcrow. The raw data shows that a Sherman was wortth 3.6 Panthers and the Sherman beat the pants off every German armored formation it ever encountered. The Sherman punched above its weight on both offense and defense and destroyed more than 2 German tanks for every Sherman lost. That is the numbers, that is the facts.
      Hillariously, the US 76mm Sherman killed more Tigers than TIgers killed US 76mm Shermans, and the popular myth (just underline that word "myth) is that they stood no chance. Sure it was a mismatch, but Tigers frequently operated alone or in very small groups augmented by older German armor which the Sherman could pick apart easily, then isolate the Tiger and go after it with a numbers advantage of several to one. A properly executed Sherman attack on an armored formation with Tigers rather closely resembled a group of ants taking down a scorpion. Numbers and opportunism in that kind of engagement mattered a lot more than individual performance capability, and very frequently the Tiger accomplished nothing buy dying very messily.
      As for why the Sherman was so much more effective than the armor thickness and gun bore bears out? Two little words. Crew sight. 3 different members of the Sherman crew had direct view of their surroundings even when the tank was buttoned down. Besides the commander and driver with their field of view, The gunner had his own independent periscope and was encouraged to select targets of opportunity.
      That gave a huge advantage to American armor in terms of opportunism and vision, and in practice it led to the Sherman getting the first shot -- the single greatest factor in whether a tank engagement is successful -- far far more often than German armor whose commander had the only periscope -- German gunners had telescopic sights only and could not usually contribute to target acquisition. And it was that advantage in vision and opportunism, not the 88, not the long 75m, not all the armor Germany could overload their tanks with, is what proved decisibve in the western front in the end.
      Now the Shermans armed with the 75mm M3 gun, did have problems dealing with the Tiger and Panther from the front. And yet they were still being issued to army units by the end of the war, even after the M26 Pershing was a thing. Was this because the army was incompetent? No. It was simply because the threats that rendered the 75mm ineffective were rare enough that they weren't worth withdrawing the 75mm armed Shermans from action (and slowing up the offensive) to deal with.
      Oh by the way -- most American commanders had no use for the Pershing. It was mechanically unreliable, too heavy for their bridges, too bulky for their railcars, and a pain in the butt to keep in formation with a Sherman column. In Korea the m26 gave them so many problems the US Army withdrew them rom service and replaced them with -- you ready for this? -- the Easy 8 Sherman, which subsequently outdueled Korean and Soviet T-34-85's to the tune of a 12-1 kill to death ratio. Obsolete my ass :D

      Just mindless twat repeating the myths and ignoring the history. The Chieftain's Hatch blog has been demolishing this particular myth for months now with real raw historical data that showed that the Sherman was more than a match for its opponents.
