That´s a nice folk tradition! In Spain we have the big bonfires, jumping over the fire to 'purify' your sins (in Spain people is less and less religious) or bad things, bad luck, etc. then there are fireworks at midnight. Other traditions that are preserved mainly in the countryside include leaving flowers in water under the moon to wash one´s face the next morning: it has to do with love and young women. In Portugal and Brazil there is the São João: very similar. Juán/Juana (Spanish)- also Iván/Ivana (but mainly in men)...Other countries: João/Joana (Portuguese) , Jon (Basque), Ivan, Xan/Xoán/Xoana (Galician), Jean/Jeanne (French), Giovani/Giovana (Italian), Iohann-Iohannes(German-Scandinavian), Jan (Netherlands) , John/Jane, Ivan (English)...
